SCHOOL VALUES: OPTIMISM SUCCESS RESPECT DETERMINATION NEWSLETTER Issue 42 22nd Feb 2019 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT – Andrew Felsinger SCHOOL COUNCIL ELECTIONS Last Wednesday nominations closed for our 2019 School Council. As the number of vacancies equalled the number of valid nominations received the following parents and staff have been duly elected to the School Council. Janine Allen who has been our School Council President since the planning stages of our school did not seek re-election due to work commitments. I would like to thank Janine for her work, support and leadership as School Council President over this period. Her vision and input has been greatly valued in particular in those crucial early planning meetings. At our first meeting on March 7 th 2pm we will be electing office bearers including School Council President for 2019 and also co-opting a community member. These students have undergone a rigorous selection process and participated in a leadership training program held over the course of the last year. They applied and were selected to their various roles. In addition our leaders were seen in action at Assembly on Friday. This is just one example of how we promote student voice within our school. Another example is our Student Representative Council. Our SRC has been set to ensure that all students have a real opportunity to be a part of the decision making within the school. In each classroom from Preps to Grade 6 students discuss issues that directly affect them. In addition our SRC organises our commitment to support charities that support children. Some of the charities that we support are State School Relief and ACE Foundation. SRC leaders and their deputies have been chosen in each classroom by their class teacher and they will be presented with their badges hopefully at this week’s assembly. We will confirm this via email to all parents. (We are just waiting for the supplier to deliver the badges). All parents and friends are welcome. MISSING LIBRARY BOOKS We have completed a stocktake of our Library books and take home reading materials and have identified that we have a large number of books that have not been returned. If you have any of our books at home can you please make sure that you send them back to school as soon as possible. We will be sending a letter to parents informing you of the missing books your child has allocated to them. It would assist us greatly if you could respond in a timely fashion to this request to return books. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION SOMERS CAMP Each year schools have an opportunity to nominate a number of senior students to be selected to attend the Department of Education Camp at Somers. This is an exemplar 9 day camp which offers a range of exciting adventure based activities. We had 11 of students selected and I had the opportunity to visit them last Thursday. They were all having a fantastic time on camp. Next newsletter we will include some of the students reflections on their camp experience.

PARKING AROUND OUR SCHOOL Parents are reminded to ensure the safety of all of our students by following all road rules and parking restrictions around the school. Please see in this newsletter a full explanation of how you can be safe. City of Casey parking officers have been in attendance and have and will continue to fine drivers who do not follow the parking restrictions. Victoria Police have also been in attendance and are fining drivers not obeying the road rules such as double parking, speeding etc. Please help keep our students safe by following the parking and road rules especially around our school.

Sunsmart Policy

Currently we have a Sunsmart Policy that outlines

the expectations for the use of hats during school

hours. It is extremely important that hats are worn

between mid-August/September to April and that

they are the school hats as detailed in the Uniform

Policy and available from PSW. Please ensure

your child’s hat is clearly named and you chat with

your child about keeping it with them, and on their

heads, during play times. If your child’s name is on

a hat and it is lost, it will be returned to the class

teacher to give to your child. Your child may also

wear sunscreen (provided by families) and close

fitting wrap-around sunglasses that meet the

Australian Standard 1067. We are currently

working towards becoming an accredited Sunsmart

school, so please help us in ensuring your child is

Sunsmart at Barton PS.

It’s been another successful week in Prep and the students are settling in well to the routine of school. This

this week in Maths we have been focussing on counting and recognising numbers as well as learning about

2D shapes and their attributes. Students have engaged in hands on activities to learn the names of shapes as

well as exploring how many sides and corners they have. In Literacy, students are continuing to learn about

the concepts of a book. The front cover, title and where to start reading. They made little Gruffalo books and

practised the 3 ways to read a book. (Pictures, words and retelling the story).

Parent Reminders

If you would like to have a chat with your child’s teacher please remember that you have the

opportunity to do so after school when we are on yard duty.

Now that your child has been provided with their online program logins please encourage

your child to use the programs at home. It is a valuable learning opportunity for your child to

learn Maths and Literacy concepts. If you have any questions regarding this please email your

child’s teacher.

Please remember to return your incursion forms for the Sports Day and to read the

Responsible Pet Ownership form. (Note that this form only needs to be returned if your child

is unable to participate due to an allergy).

Students need a drink bottle at school every day, which is full of water.

Fruit break is at 10am – please ensure your child has some fruit to eat at

this time.

School begins at 8.55am sharp.

Teachers are on yard duty every day from 3.15 to 3.30 (2.30 – 2.45 on

Wednesdays). Please feel free to come and see us if you have any

concerns or questions.

The Grade 1 students have been learning about their strengths and how to show perseverance in

Inquiry this week. This builds on their ability to show a growth mindset and to try their best in all

situations. This will help the grade ones to persist when faced with challenges in their learning.

It’s been a very busy start to 2019 in Music! Students have been playing instruments, dancing, singing and

generally having lots of super fun! It’s been fantastic to share the joy of music teaching with Mrs Krejic and Mrs

Wallwork. Fun for all!

Preps have discovered how Beat is the heart of music. The song “Music Has A Steady Beat” has quickly become

a favourite!

Grade 1-2 have been learning to recognise strong and weak beats,

counting and grouping them into measures of 2, 3 or 4 beats.

Grade 3-4 have been exploring the Grand Staff, playing Ostinatos on tuned and untuned percussion

instruments.

Grade 5-6 students have just commenced their Ukulele lessons and are starting on rotation activities, including

using the recording studio! Leading up to this, they have been composing simple 4-part rhythms and

performing these in a group to their class.

What’s been happening in Music?

Choir and Rock Band will be commencing next week.

Choir, for Grade 1-6 students, will be each Thursday

lunchtime in the music room. Grade 6 Rock Band will

be every Tuesday lunchtime.

A reminder to parents that our amazing “QuaverMusic” program is available for student use at home.

Your student can access www.quavermusic.com from any internet enabled device, using their unique

username and password to log into their personal account. Many of the songs, activities and games used

in music class are available via the student logins. If you use a “Flash” enabled web browser (i.e. on a

computer), there is even more content that your child can access. If you have any questions about

QuaverMusic access at home, please feel free to contact David Taylor at the school.

We have had a very busy few weeks in enviro starting our year with great environmental habits.

We are seeing so many students embracing our zero hero initiative and the weekly class results

are improving every week!

We have been continuing our exploration of water sources and storage. In Prep to Grade 2 we

ventured outside the classroom and investigated sources of water around our school grounds.

Some Prep classes were lucky enough to hear our resident frogs in the wetland area on our walk.

The Grade 3 -6 students have been working hard, exploring Melbourne’s complex waterways and

the urban water cycle.

Our Grade 3-6 students were surprised to find out that Melbourne produces over 850 million

litres of sewage every day and that 99% of sewage is actually water!
