ello and welcome to Canvas! The name is Jay Bobo. The hometown is Toledo,

the Nikon D80 is the camera of choice. For the past nine years, I’ve worked with some interesting companies and met tons of fun people, all of whom have inspired me to cre-ate this magazine.

In moving to Cleveland, I’ve learned the true meaning of hunger, seeking change; creating a new niche, a new flavor, a new canvas. President Obama said it best, “We are the change that we seek.”

I created Canvas with the idea of seeking change in free magazines in Cleveland and presenting a fresh perspective on everything from Tarblooders on E.117th to the sermons of Pastor R.A. Vernon.

We at Canvas look to aid, inspire, and assist Cleveland’s urban community. We WILL bring you affordable and effective advertis-ing, excellent photography, and great inter-views. We will continually raise the bar.

This magazine would not be possible with-out Mom and Dad, my wonderful co-work-ers, and most importantly the advertisers that believed in this vision without seeing the entire picture.

Thanks!

Jay [email protected]

Three things that you notice in a guy? I notice his teeth, shoes, and then nails.

What are some turnoffs? What are some turn-ons? No job, bad breath, baby mama drama, and for him to brag about everything he has! Turn-ons would be having a job, raising his children, and being family oriented.

What’s the worst experience you have had with the opposite sex? Went out on a date with a guy who mysteriously left his wallet at home.

What’s your idea of a perfect first date? When your date gets to your house looking nice, give you a compliment, treats you like a lady, and the both of you can laugh and be yourself without him want-ing anything more.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of your job? No scheduled routine, an opportunity to be creative, networking, group projects, and continuous training. The disadvantages are long hours, deadline driven assignments, and stressful work.

What is the salary range for Marketing Coordinators? Depends on experience level, qualifications/skills, and de-gree.

What advice do you have for people seeking a similar ca-reer path? Set challenging goals and work hard to accomplish them. Do not let one stand in your way from accomplishing your goals. What’s your favorite quote? “To be successful, the first thing to do is fall in love with your work.” - Sister Mary Lauretta

HUSH MONEYMANAGEMENT

tarted by local entrepreneur Johnny Dukes, Hush Money Management was

a way for him to help support his brother Stone & Skent with their music.

As a dedicated entrepreneur and lover of hip-hop/rap, Johnny started the company under the name Wise Owl Entertainment in 1996 and things took off from there with Skent re-leasing his first solo project in 2001-2002.

Over the past few years, HMM has grown from one artist to three, including local art-ist CJ and R.O.B. in addition to Skent.

The hardest part of the music business, John-ny says, “Is creating a buzz for all of my art-ists. We’re trying hard to have them become known in and outside of Cleveland. With so many people rapping, we’re constantly try-ing to come up with ways to have them stand apart from the rest, be it in our marketing or in our work ethic.”

Throughout the rest of ‘09, HMM looks to expand into other markets (Las Vegas, Char-lotte, and Atlanta) as it releases music from all of its artists this year.

ARNOLD HINES

Word of Mouth Promotions

arty promotion and event planning is a skill that many usually undertake, but few are able to boast of having 10 years of experience. Arnold Hines, owner of

Word of Mouth Promotions, has been a leader within Cleveland’s nightlife scene with a number of successful events at venues like the House of Blues, Sunset Lounge, Anatomy, and Touch. That’s not including former Cleveland clubs like Spy Bar and Cloud Nine.

His typical day includes a lot of com-munication such as returning emails, contacting venues, attending partner-ship meetings, and looking for the next event.

In addition to being his own boss and getting to set his own schedule, Arnold says that party promotion can have its disadvantages.

“Don’t expect success over night. A lot more goes into throwing a party than you might expect,” says Arnold. “This is not my hobby, this is my life. It’s my passion. My main advice is to learn from your mistakes and do not give up. If you don’t ever fail you can never grow.”

...REVEALEDDemetria Francis of Headlines by De’Franco. has come a long way as a local business owner and entrepreneur.

Today, we ask her a few questions.

eing a small business owner is one of the most difficult jobs that a person

can choose. Enterpreneurs exchange one supervisor for many supervisors (i.e. your clients) and take on the responsibility of not just one position but whatever position/hat/job is necessary to make their business a success.

Recently, we touched bases with local en-trepreneur Demetria “Meechie” Francis of two location (4034 Mayfield Rd & 5160 Wilson Mills Rd) local salon Headlines by DeFranco to talk about the business of do-ing business in Cleveland.

How did you get your start? D: I got my start as a salon owner, at the age of 22 after working in salons that didn’t fit my person-ality or growth as a stylist.

What’s the good and bad of working in Cleveland’s hair industry? D: The good thing is that there are very talented styl-ists here that do really great work. The bad thing is that they have allowed clients not to pay what the service is really worth. Styl-ists in Cleveland are being paid less than what stylists in other areas charge.

What words of advice do you have for upcoming stylists and salon owners? What’s the average income range? D: Don’t be afraid to take chances. As long as you have faith in God, he’ll work every-thing out.

A stylists income can range anywhere from a few hundred dollars a week to a few thou-sand. It all depends on the size of your cli-entele and cost of your services.

“My words of advice: Don’t be afraid to take chances. As long as you have faith in God, he’ll

work everything out.”

What do you believe are the keys to be-ing a successful salon owner? D: Loca-tion and advertising are key to a successful salon, but choosing a staff that supports and respects your business is equally as important.

What are some challenges you’ve faced in getting to current place? D: Basi-cally just staying focused and not letting negativity destroy my business. Rumors, gossip, and drama are inevitable in such a competitve business. However, you soon learn that if nobody is talking about you, than you’re nobody worth talking about.

What are the top three local salons? D: There are so many successful salons, that it’s hard to pick just three, but needless to say Headlines by De’Franco is one of them!

What’s next for Headlines? D: I’m excited about our new barbershop coming soon, Barbers by DeFranco on 4034 Mayfield Rd. in South Euclid. Barbers Wanted! Shameless plug!

Thanks!
