MARCH 2019 Cantor’s Corner By Cantor Laura Berman How often have you heard or had reason to say, “Words cannot ex- press…” followed by “…my gratitude,” “…my sorrow,” “…my joy,” “…my regret,” “…my amazement,” or some such overflowing emotion? Words can say a great amount about human understanding, but articulate as we may be, they still fall short of what we have to express. Words can have deep impact, but we know that they can have further impact and relate so much more of our emotions when they are joined with fitting music. The music can connect us more directly to the spirit, soul, and the multiple levels of meaning in words. And paradoxically, music can also free us from the awkwardness of words and allow our emotions to fly beyond the boundaries of text, to penetrate the depths of our souls and the reaches of the heavens. Everything we know about Jewish history and practice, from the chant in the Temple to today’s choirs and congregations worldwide, tells us that most of our Jewish texts and Jewish prayers are meant to be sung. Our Talmud affirms that the requirement for music during prayer is as old as the Bible. And yet, while our prayers are chanted and sung, simply to call them “songs” would seem a devaluation; “sacred songs” may be a more apt distinction from the ordinary. One of our B’nei Mitzvah recently chanted Torah with the sacred song used to celebrate one of the most momentous events in our tradition—the deliverance of our ancestors from slavery towards a new and promising life. Divine messages are transmitted in the language of music, and in this language mankind universally strives to speak with the Divine. The late composer and conductor, Leonard Bernstein, gave an address in which he spoke about the power of music: “God said: ‘Let there be light.’ God said: ‘Let there be a firmament.’ He created verbally. Now can you imagine God saying, just like that, ‘Let there be light,’ as if ordering lunch? Or even in the original language: ‘y’hi or?’ I’ve always had a private fantasy of God singing those two blazing words: ‘YEHI O-O-O-R!’ Now that could really have done it; music could have caused light to break forth.” Talk about creating an atmosphere! Bernstein knew the inde- scribable power of music to convey experience as well as to express our souls. We may not have the power to create light, but we do have the power to create something heav- enly when our voices join together. With music, we can open the channels into and out of our hearts. In the coming weeks, we invite you to numerous musical experiences at Temple Sinai, in addition to our invariably musical Shabbat and holiday services. We hope you will mark your calendars for: • “A Mary Poppins Purim” with the annual Purim Shpiel Wednesday evening, March 20. If you “Love to Laugh,” we’ll see you there! • Our 3rd Annual Latke-Hamantash Debate on March 20 immediately following the shpiel, and • The centennial of Leonard Bernstein celebrated with a concert at 7:30 PM Sunday, April 7, with the combined choirs of Temple Sinai, Rodef Shalom, and the Bach Choir of Pittsburgh, members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, local cantors, and special guest performers. From all of us at Temple Sinai, whether or not you know the words or sing in tune, we always welcome your voice, your light, and your spirit. MARCH 2019

Cantor’s Corner By Cantor Laura Berman

How often have you heard or had reason to say, “Words cannot ex-press…” followed by “…my gratitude,” “…my sorrow,” “…my joy,” “…my regret,” “…my amazement,” or some such overflowing emotion?

The late composer and conductor, Leonard Bernstein, gave an address in which he spoke about the power of music:

“God said: ‘Let there be light.’

God said: ‘Let there be a firmament.’

He created verbally. Now can you imagine God saying, just like that, ‘Let there be light,’ as if ordering lunch?

Or even in the original language: ‘y’hi or?’

I’ve always had a private fantasy of God singing those two blazing words:

‘YEHI O-O-O-R!’

Now that could really have done it; music could have caused light to break forth.”

Talk about creating an atmosphere! Bernstein knew the inde-scribable power of music to convey experience as well as to express our souls. We may not have the power to create light, but we do have the power to create something heav-enly when our voices join together. With music, we can open the channels into and out of our hearts.

In the coming weeks, we invite you to numerous musical experiences at Temple Sinai, in addition to our invariably musical Shabbat and holiday services. We hope you will mark your calendars for:

• “A Mary Poppins Purim” with the annual Purim Shpiel Wednesday evening, March 20. If you “Love to Laugh,” we’ll see you there!

• Our 3rd Annual Latke-Hamantash Debate on March 20 immediately following the shpiel, and

• The centennial of Leonard Bernstein celebrated with a concert at 7:30 PM Sunday, April 7, with the combined choirs of Temple Sinai, Rodef Shalom, and the Bach Choir of Pittsburgh, members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, local cantors, and special guest performers.

From all of us at Temple Sinai, whether or not you know the words or sing in tune, we always welcome your voice, your light, and your spirit.

B’virkat shalom – with blessings of peace, Cantor Laura Berman

As Development Director, Leslie provides leadership and coordination of all aspects of donor engagement, fundraising, and stewardship for Temple Sinai, with the goal of deepening and expanding congregational connections both within the organization and across the broader Pittsburgh community. In addition to leading fundraising efforts for synagogue events, projects, and new initiatives, Leslie works closely with our Executive Director and Board of Directors to build endowment funding for the future of Temple Sinai, and to secure annual operating funds for the congregation’s robust schedule of events, educational programming, and community activities.

“Leslie understands that Development is inherent in everything we do at Temple Sinai. Elements of Development such as building strong relationships, meeting new people, being inclusive and saying ‘thank you’ are second nature to her. I am very excited to have Leslie as a part of our community,” said Drew Barkley, Executive Director.

A native of Charleston, West Virginia, Leslie comes to Temple Sinai with more than 15 years of experience in the Pittsburgh non-profit sector, working for both cultural arts and social services organizations, including Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, Persad Center, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, and Pittsburgh Opera. She is also a freelance food writer and columnist for publications including Table Magazine, Pittsburgh City Paper, and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. In her spare time, Leslie enjoys playing guitar; cooking and exploring new cuisines; travel; visiting museums; attending arts and cultural events; and hiking in Pittsburgh’s beautiful city parks with her rescue dog, Alfie.

The Falk Library Committee invites you on a tour of The Kelso Museum of Near Eastern Archaeology on Wednesday, April 10 from 10 AM–Noon.

The Kelso Museum, located on the campus of the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, has its roots in a program of archaeological field work that began in 1924. It focuses on the lands of the Bible, what is now modern day Israel and Jordan. The program continues today with an on-going excavation at Tel Zayit in Israel.

While touring the Kelso Museum, we will learn about the Dead Sea Plain during the Bronze Age, 3300–2000 BCE, and examine daily life in the region when influenced by contact with Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and Rome from 2000 BCE–1000 CE. You will delight in viewing the Kelso’s 400-year-old Torah scroll. Our own Ram Kossowsky will join us to add his commentary.

For reservations, please contact Susan Cohen at [email protected] or (412) 512-4280 by Wednesday, April 3. Please reserve as soon as possible as space at the museum is limited.

SAVE THE DATE: TOUR THE KELSO MUSEUM, APRIL 10, 10 AM
