I would also like to pay tribute to William and Judah and the outgoing prefects. They have set the bar high with their commitment to the school community. We also wish the whole of Year 12 good luck in their upcoming HSC exams and on their future pathways. Thank you for sharing your skills, talents and abilities with our community, we are richer for your presence at CBHS. Remember you will always be a Cantabrian. We edge ever closer to our Centenary celebrations in November and I thank the Centenary team for their tireless efforts to date. More information on the Centenary is on the website and later in this newsletter. Merchandise and tickets to the gala dinner are available from the office. It is with sadness that we say goodbye to Ms Belinda Conway. She will leave us to start as Deputy Principal at Sydney Secondary College. In her leadership as both Head Teacher English and Relieving Deputy Principal, she has shared her skills and knowledge to enrich our school community. In particular her leadership of the University of Sydney STEM Academy initiatives and the Primary School programs has been invaluable. Her leadership and organisation will be greatly missed. We wish her all the best in her career in the future. Catherine Player

CBHS Success at Public Education Awards for a Second Year in a Row Building on last year's success, CBHS has again been recognised as a leader in public education with a Minister's Award for Outstanding School Initiative recognising the outstanding literacy partnership with Sydney Story Factory. For the past two years students have been working with mentors from the Sydney Story Factory to build skills in writing across a range of genres, including Shakespearean drama, as featured on ABC news last year.

Farewell It is with great sadness that I write in Canterbury Tales for the final time. After nearly six years at the school as HT English and Relieving Deputy, I am moving to a new role at Sydney Secondary College, Leichhardt Campus. I have enjoyed getting to know students, families and our wider community and will miss the strong partnerships in learning that have been built over the years. I acknowledge and thank my colleagues for their support over the years and know that the school's proud traditions continue with the excellent staff, students and community partners at CBHS. I look forward to catching up with everyone at our upcoming Centenary weekend. Belinda Conway

7Z Awesome Start to Art! This term, 7Z have been researching portrait artists from a variety of art periods and their famous paintings. Through this study the students have further developed their understanding of the Elements of Art (tone, colour, texture, shape) Term 1 topic. Students then created their own PowerPoint presentation to teach their fellow classmates about the artist they researched. Year 7 students have also been learning about Post Modernism and appropriation, where artists ‘borrow’ ideas from other artworks and use them to create their own work. 7Z demonstrated their brilliant painting skills by painting a self-portrait, appropriating the portrait that they researched. What a privilege it has been to teach this class and watch their skills and confidence develop! Ms P Bursill

Jeremiah appropriating Brett Whiteley

Jimmy and Takrim appropriating Pablo Picasso

Foodies Fun Year 9/10 Elective Food Technology This term, our Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10) Food Technology elective class has been studying how the food catering and service industries function. They have looked at the various styles of menus and catering options available. Students have been completing an assessment where they had to develop a menu for a mock school formal including entrees, mains and desserts. They also had to prepare one of their entrees in class. The students prepared a variety of entrees including different takes on Caesar salads, loaded fries, san choi bao, chicken and leek pies and crispy bocconcini with chilli tomato sauce.

I would like to congratulate the chefs of tomorrow on how well they conducted themselves and the various meals they produced and look forward to their special occasion menus and food they will produce next term.

UNSW ASPIRE Year 7 Workshop At the end of Term 2, Year 7 students participated in an ASPIRE workshop held at school. Students heard ASPIRE ambassadors talk about their studies and experience at university.

Students also engaged in interactive quizzes aimed at teaching students about everything to do with university including: the ATAR, university fees, courses available, academic staff and scholarships. Students also engaged in discussions about why one would choose or not choose to study at university.

Year 10 ASPIRE ADVANTAGE ASPIRE ADVANTAGE is a new program for senior high school students aimed at supporting students to maximise their potential to achieve a high ATAR and enter university through mentoring workshops, academic support and industry visits.

At the end of Term 2, Year 10 students participated in a three day on-campus program, ‘Aspire Connect’ which involved connecting students with UNSW, ASPIRE ambassadors and industry mentors through industry visits in which students gained insight into the variety of jobs available.

Students heard from three key motivational speakers: Professor Eileen Baldry, Professor of Criminology; Rugby League player, Robbie Rochow; and Professor Michelle Simmons, 2018 Australian of the Year/Director of Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology, who all shared their career journey and tips for a successful career with students.

Immunisation

From 1 April 2018, all school principals are required to request an immunisation certificate at enrolment. While students can still be enrolled if an approved immunisation certificate is not provided, these children will be considered unimmunised and may be excluded from school if there is an outbreak of a vaccine preventable disease at the school or if they come into contact with a person with a vaccine preventable disease, even if there is no outbreak at the school. Parents are encouraged to ensure that their children are up to date with their immunisations and to provide an immunisation certificate from the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) at enrolment, either:

• AIR Immunisation History Statement; or

• AIR Immunisation History Form. These changes have been made to collect accurate information about children’s immunisation status and to help manage disease outbreaks in schools and the community. It is easy for parents to access immunisation records on the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR). Parents can request a copy of their child’s AIR Immunisation History Statement at any time (up to their child being 14 years of age):

• using their Medicare online account through myGov: https://my.gov.au/

• using the Medicare Express Plus App: www.humanservices.gov.au/individuals/subjects/express-plus-mobile-apps

• calling the AIR General Enquiries Line on 1800 653 809

Children aged 14 years and over can request their own Immunisation History Statement from the AIR by using or creating their own Medicare online account through myGov: https://my.gov.au/

Fully Immunised Children Over 94% of children in NSW are fully immunised at 5 years of age and their AIR Immunisation History Statement will include the words “This child has received all vaccines required by 5 years of age” at the bottom of the page. Children with medical contraindications or natural immunity Children who cannot be immunised for medical reasons, or who have natural immunity, will still be recorded as “Up to date” on their AIR Immunisation History Statement if an AIR Medical Exemption Form has been completed by a GP/medical specialist and sent to the AIR. The medical exemption or natural immunity will be listed near the bottom of the Statement. Children immunised overseas Where vaccines have been given overseas and are not recorded on the AIR, the child’s overseas records should be checked by a GP/nurse who will then transfer the information to the AIR. Parents should then request an updated AIR Immunisation History Statement to give to the school.

Children not fully immunised For children who have not had all the recommended immunisations by 4 years of age, their AIR Immunisation History Statement will list the missing immunisations and the due dates at the bottom of the page. These children should be started on an approved catch-up schedule and an AIR Immunisation History Form completed by the GP/nurse and sent to the AIR. Parents can then provide a copy of the AIR Immunisation History Form to the school at enrolment. Please be aware that students who have not had all the recommended immunisations for their age, or where no immunisation certificate has been provided, may need to stay at home during a disease outbreak. This is to protect the child and stop the spread of disease.

Counsellor’s Advice Tips to Become a Successful Student • Plan time for exercise:

A physically tired body and mind usually leads to a restful sleep. Avoid strenuous exercise just before bed time. Students who do three lots of aerobic exercise a week out-perform those who

don’t. • Do some form of relaxation each day:

Try Yoga, meditation, aromatherapy, muscle relaxation exercises, check out ‘Mindfulness’ on the Internet.

• Avoid caffeine within six hours of bedtime: This includes cola and energy drinks.

• Stop using electronic devices half an hour

before bedtime: Includes phones, computers, tablets, ipads.

• Spend time worrying during the day:

Have a 10 minute “worry time” at least two hours before bedtime and reflect on issues. Keep your diary and weekly/monthly term planners up to date so you can download your worries to these management devices. Once you’ve downloaded your worries you can forget about them until tomorrow!

• Treat yourself gently:

Celebrate what you’ve done today and recognise you’ve used your organisation systems (diary/planner) ready for tomorrow. Worrying about anything else right now won’t help!

• Be positive and plan ahead: Talk with your teachers, school counsellor, student support officer, friends if you need help.

When it rains, look for rainbows

When it’s dark, look for stars

• Get enough sleep: You need 8 to 9 hours each night. This helps you consolidate learning and prepares your brain for new information.

• Eat brain food: Eat breakfast which is good for memory and concentration. If possible, eat eggs, yoghurt, fish and blueberries as they are great for brain chemicals, memory and concentration.

• Hydrate your brain:

Your brain is 80% water and it needs replenishing! Sip water every twenty to thirty minutes while studying and it improves attention, concentration and usually motivation.

• What about coffee?

If you’re well rested, two cups of coffee can really lift short-term memory, improve your concentration and improve your mood.

• How should I best study?

Using the 50/15 works well. Study for a maximum of fifty minutes followed by a fifteen minute break, before starting again. Study during the day or early evening and then go to bed when you’re tired. You’ll recall 35% more information like this compared with late night study sessions. Study at the same time and place every day and away from distraction. Research shows you’ll recall 60% more than students who study at different times and locations.

• Check out websites like: www.mentalstillness.org or www.headspace.org.au or phone apps like ‘Smiling Mind’, ‘My Calm Beat’, ‘Reach Out Breathe’, ‘Reach Out Worry Time’ or see your School Counsellor (Doug Creighton) or Student Support Officer (Stephanie Goni)

• Stay planned, stay organised: At the end of the day tell yourself, ‘there is nothing more I can do today, there’s nothing I can do until tomorrow, I’m going to shut down now and take it easy’.

Work Experience Burwood Police Early this term I was fortunate to participate in Work Experience organised by Burwood Police. I gained great insight into the day-to-day duties of a Police Officer as well the different positions available within the Police Force such as Mounties, Polair and Wateries.

One highlight of the program was visiting Goulburn Police Academy where we were shown facilities and informed about the process of applying to become a Police Officer. I am definitely considering Policing as a future career!

Fawzi Yaghi, Year 11

UNSW Civil & Environmental Engineering At the end of last term, I was fortunate enough to be selected for Work Experience with The School of Civil & Environmental Engineering. The program allowed students to experience engineering projects first hand across six areas of the field: Structures and Design; Coastal and Port Infrastructure; Construction and Project Management; Water, Wastewater and Environment; Road, Transport and Geotechnical Engineering; and Surveying and Geospatial Engineering. We participated in daily field trips to a range of engineering sites across Sydney, followed by an afternoon debrief and short report writing session at the UNSW Kensington campus. I gained great insight into the field of Engineering and would like to work in the field of Coastal or Environmental Engineering in the future. Sajat Kabir, Year 10 Roads & Maritime Services

This term I participated in Work Experience for two weeks with RMS, Yennora. I worked in the ITS Department which specialises in electronics and technological aspects of road infrastructure. After completing small projects over the two weeks, I feel I have gained new knowledge regarding electronics and programming which I would like to develop further after my HSC. I am considering studying a Bachelor of Mechatronic Engineering when I finish school and need to attain a high ATAR in order to enter the course. I also need to study Extension 1 Maths and Physics as part of my HSC. Caielan Friedel, Year 10

ABCN Programs Year 10 Interview2Impress This term Year 10 students attended Interview2impress, an interview preparation program, facilitated by ABCN staff with industry mentors at Stockland Head Office.

This interactive program is designed to equip students with the necessary practical skills needed to pursue employment options beyond school.

Students learnt about effective non-verbal communication, building rapport, a typical interview structure and questions, and were then given the opportunity to practise the theory learnt through mock interviews with staff mentors.

Year 12 InRoads Program

Year 12 students interested in a future within the IT industry participated in the InRoads Program, a unique program designed to help Year 12 students find their first job after school.

The program consisted of four workshops facilitated by ABCN staff which took place at the Commonwealth Bank. Students were mentored by staff from the Commonwealth Bank and learnt about a diverse range of career paths available, employability skills and interview techniques and processes.

During the program, students met representatives from TalentRISE, which is a recruitment agency that will support students find their first job after school. TalentRISE will contact students after their HSC examinations to discuss potential opportunities.
