Year 7 enjoyed Egg day with Science, Year 8 spent the day in artistic pursuits at the Aquarium, Year 9 did a film study examining bullying with PDHPE and English, while Year 11 and 12 participated in the annual Day of Well Being. Aboriginal education ProgramsThis year is turning out to be another exciting year for our school’s wonderful Aboriginal students. Mrs McLelland is again working Tuesdays in Week B this semester to mentor our Aboriginal students and provide learning support. Mrs McLelland will be liaising with families in the completion of each student’s Personal Learning Plan and extra-curricular activities such as Bangarra Dance day and University of NSW Winter School. I have finalised Norta Norta tuition support for both Year 8 and our senior students, and Anastasia Bampos, Year 10, has commenced her traineeship in the Justice Department! Would parents of Aboriginal students please contact Mrs McLelland if they require any support?

Personal learning Plans and Digital PortfoliosThis week, Years 7–9 will be issued with a template for completing a Personal Learning Plan for 2016. This is a document in which students identify their learning goals for the year. Students will also be instructed on how to create a Digital Portfolio using Adobe software which they can store quality pieces of work in. Both the Personal Learning Plans and Digital Portfolios will support students when giving Learning presentations in Term 4 of this year.

ReportsInterim reports will be issued to Years 7 and 11 at the end of Term 1; full reports will be issued for Years 8, 9 and 10 at the end of Term 2, and Years 7 and 11 start of Term 3. Parents and carers should contact me if they have any issues regarding Reports.

Personal BestThe Personal Best program was introduced into the school in 2015 to build student knowledge and resilience about age relevant issues, and to promote positive mental health. For example, Year 7 examines issues related to bullying and friendship; Year 8 examines cyber-safety and Personal Relationships; Year 9 examines resilience and decision-making, and Year 10 examines planning for the future and mental health.

Half hour sessions are allocated on Thursday and Friday each week to enable students to undertake their personal best work during school time. The work usually involves accessing relevant websites and making brief reflective notes about the material accessed.

DEAR teachers support and monitor the completion of students’ Personal Best program work. When students complete this work, an entry is made onto their school record and yearly report and a certificate issued. Would all parents and carers please encourage your daughter to complete her Personal Best work in 2016 and to understand the issues examined in the hope that this promotes resilience and engagement with schooling.

Reminders Regarding ongoing issuesThe main issue I wanted to ask for all parent support with was in relation to leaving valuables unattended. Please reminding your daughter to NOT bring valuables to school, excursions, carnivals etc and to keep items such as phones, ipads, laptops on her person at all times. As in the ‘real world’, if your daughter leaves valuables unattended somewhere, someone will likely take them, and there is nothing the school can do to retrieve the item. Great distress is invariably caused for both the student and her family if this happens. Please ask your daughter not to bring any valuable to school unless absolutely necessary.

Can I also remind parents that tights are unacceptable uniform at any time, except on Wednesdays for Sport when worn under either a skirt or shorts. Tights alone are never permissible. Your support with adhering to the school’s Uniform Code is very much appreciated.

The Police Youth Liaison Officer who supports our school address safety and security issues is Constable Jim Battalico, who can be contacted at Ashfield Police Station – 9797 4099.

Pink stumps Cricket Day Stacey Naisbett is co-ordinating a fundraising effort for the McGrath Foundation. We are taking part in the Pink Stumps Day to raise awareness of breast cancer for the McGrath Foundation. This charity raises money to place McGrath Breast Care nurses in communities across Australia as well as to increase breast awareness in young people, with a particular emphasis on young women.

We have a school target of $650 and there will be a variety of events to raise these funds over the next month to 6 weeks.

iwD: Year 9 PAss excursionOn the 10th March, Year 9 PASS went on an excursion to the Morris Iemma Sports Centre at Riverwood to celebrate International Women’s Day. The girls participated in four different sports – Soccer, AFL, European Handball and Netball where they practised skills and played small sided games. The girls also listened to four guest speakers who shared their experiences with sport, life challenges as well the importance of empowering young women. A few of our girls were lucky enough to get their picture into Riverwood’s local newspaper.

March 18th National Day of Action Against BullyingCGHS was a registered school in the 2016 Bullying No Way Day of Action. We constantly strive to take a stand against bullying. Our Anti Bullying Policy is published from our student information booklet. We also refer you to the CGHS website Anti Bullying Policy page.

YAs, DPs, HTSW, the SC and YW, as well as every classroom teacher, can support students to manage a bullying scenario. We have a report form for student use to report bullying available on the website or with YAs and DPs. Anti Bullying Plans signed by all parties are used to resolve bullying scenarios. The PYLO works closely with the school to uphold expectations regarding positive, respectful, polite relationships. The PYLO has particular involvement in matters related to cyberbullying.

We have recognised the Day of Action by distributing wristbands and wallet help cards, displaying posters and in our Twitter feed. We have sent a flyer home to all Year 7 families about the Anti Bullying Mentor Session completed earlier this term. Our PYLO has addressed all junior years in Term 1 2016, YAs have reinforced the Anti Bullying Policy with their cohorts, and as mentioned Year 7 has done their final mentor session on this topic. Our White Ribbon and Personal Best programs address bullying. Anti Bullying is embedded in PDHPE and English curriculum as well as in CAPA, HSIE and TAS subjects. Performances and workshops in the annual week of wellbeing include the Anti Bullying theme and provide another dimension to deliver important messages to adolescents on this topic.

flipout The 10 PASS Field Study Day excursion to Flipout, Punchbowl was another success. The students looked at performing a variety of skills along with playing games such as dodgeball and relay races. The excursion was an extension of the topic Participating with Safety which the students are currently learning in class.

sPoRt – Cross Country CarnivalThis year’s Cross Country Carnival will be held at Peace Park in Ashbury on Wednesday 6th April from midday until approximately 2:30pm. The course will follow the running track over several laps and will include some hills this year for authentic cross country conditions! Students will be walking from the school to and from the venue. Senior students in Years 11 and 12 will be dismissed from the venue after completing their event. Parents are welcome to attend. We will cross fingers for good weather on the day.

field study Day, 2016. Year 10 electives undertook Rich Curriculum Days on the Field Study Day in March this term. Pictured here are Year 10 Physical and Sports Sciences (PASS), Year 10 Business Services, Year 10 Photography and Digital Media (PDM) work at NSW Art Gallery, and Year 10 Drama. The field study day approach to scheduling variations enables all students to participate on the same day. This streamlines staffing and avoids the issue of students missing work in other subjects. The benefits of authentic, enriched learning experiences in galleries, theatres, workplaces and state of the art facilities is the outcome for our students undertaking elective studies. Commerce visited the Downing St Centre and the Powerhouse Museum was the destination for both Textiles and IST (Information Science Technology). In future editions we will publish more from other Years. The Term 2 Field Study Day is Friday June 10 (for Year 9 this is Day 3 of their Mowbray Park Camp).

MAtHs fACUltY: “Beauty is in the phi of the Beholder.”It has long been said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and thought that beauty varies by race, culture or era. The evidence, however, shows that our perception of physical beauty is hard wired into our being and based on how closely the features of one’s face reflect phi in their proportions. The Golden Ratio appears extensively in the human face, as demonstrated in a 2009 university study on attractiveness. (http://www.goldennumber.net/beauty/)

this Year 12 class are delving in to the realms of the golden Ratio. The golden ratio (symbol is the Greek letter “phi” (shown above) is a special number approximately equal to 1.618. It appears many times in geometry, art, architecture and other areas. Some artists and architects believe the Golden Ratio makes the most pleasing and beautiful shape.

2015 study announces the discovery of the Golden Ratio in the Sistene Chapel. Clinical Anatomy published an article on July 17, 2015 by a team from Brazil titled “More than a neuroanatomical representation in The Creation of Adam by Michelangelo Buonarroti, a representation of the Golden Ratio.”

s.e.A: March 4th – Clean Up our school Day CampaignOur school’s environmental club joined forces with Canterbury Primary to participate in the ‘Clean Up Our School’ campaign. Year 7, 8 and 9 students from our team helped primary students clean up their school yard and helped mentor them in taking pride in their environment. Khadijah Safar in Year 9 wrote “We went to Canterbury Public school and helped the students and teachers clean their school up. We showed the students where to place the different types of rubbish like paper to be placed in recycling and other rubbish like plastic bags to be placed non-recycling bin.”

Year 8 new members of SEA, Cara Baldwin and Michelle Lee said “Helping out with the Canterbury Public kids for Clean Up School Days was a good experience for us as Junior Environment Ambassadors. It was great to see that there actually wasn’t much rubbish around their school and the kids were very enthusiastic about cleaning up their environment.” The pictures above are our SEA students with the primary students.

Year 7 have completed four sessions of mentoring as part of their transition to high school experience, lead by our trained mentors in Years 9 and 10. The sessions have covered study and homework at high school, using the school diary, finding your way around, making new friends and having positive, safe relationships. The final session had an anti bullying focus and all students received an information letter to take home to families. The sessions included icebreaker games, teamwork activities, and structured discussion. This is an example of student driven peer mentoring, and we congratulate our fine Years 9 and 10 mentors for their efforts. Names were published in our last newsletter and all students will be awarded a certificate, with participation counting towards recognition badges.

sCHool DiARY 2016: Do you have your copy?At CGHS we have a school diary which all students are expected to own and have in every lesson at school for recording homework and important dates.

Your teachers will ask you to use your diary to write down your homework, test dates, assessment task dates due etc.

A number of students still have not purchased the 2016 diary. Please do so ASAP. Available at Office C. Still only $10. It contains pages of CGHS information for easy reference.

Also much study skills and learning advice is in each weekly double page spread, plus checklists and exercises to help you maximise your results by being great at time management, revision and exam skills, etc.

Lots of wellbeing information and guidance are also provided, to support you to cope, be resilient, safe and happy.

Additionally the diary can be a communication tool from school to home, supporting families to assist you achieve your personal best.

Remember, all students 7-12 are expected to use the CGHS diary, so purchase yours quickly.

There will be a check done in Personal Best time before the end of term to make sure you own a diary and have it with you. Please be prepared.

Parent Daughter Program Thursday 17th March was the final session for this term’s Parent Daughter Program. It was another huge success, and we all thoroughly enjoyed our cookery session. Over the past 5 weeks parents and daughters have tried activities such as Pilates, African drumming and Boxing.

Year 12 students were able to hear about cadetship opportunities on March 18 in Engineering, Business and Technology fields. A lunchtime talk attracted a couple of dozen students who gained valuable information about the application process and were encouraged to apply, to gain the benefit of preparing their documentation and having the interview experience.

In week 5 of this term, most students in Year 7 attended the annual trip to Camp Milson Island!

Students in higher years had told us how this trip would bond us, create great memories and friendships, and above all, we would have amazing fun. Now I took this with a grain of salt, as my previous experiences with school camps were, in fact, fun. But, they were filled with unbelievable amounts of drama, and people (boys) who decided to bring only one outfit, thus resulting in them smelling like they had crawled out of a sewer.

But, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this camp was one of the greatest experiences of my life! If you asked me why, I would be unable to choose just one aspect; it could have been sleeping in a room with seven other girls who are fun as heck! Or it could have been the fact that I cemented a fantastic friendship with a girl I had only met a month ago, or it could have even been that a religion was founded at the abseiling course where our prophet is a gender-fluid pigeon. I loved it all!

I don’t usually use this many positive adjectives to describe anything. But to reiterate, after going to this camp, it felt necessary, because it truly was an experience that I will never forget. And it made me all the more proud to say that I attend Canterbury Girls.

The CoolKids and Adolescent Health Program: Helping distressed children & adolescents suffering from somatic health

complaints (including recurring headaches, stomach-aches etc).

About 40% of children and adolescents may experience functional somatic health complaints, which are medically benign (that is, they have no identified organic cause). The most common somatic-health complaints experienced by children and adolescents include recurring abdominal pain, gastro-intestinal symptoms, recurring headaches, chest pains, dizziness and nausea. Research has shown that these children are prone to have increased rates of school absenteeism, and this may also have an impact on their learning, peer relations and overall quality of life. Studies have also indicated that up to 80% of children and adolescents struggling to cope with these recurring functional somatic health complaints may also be experiencing anxiety and/or depressive problems.

Our new, CoolKids and Adolescent Health Program is designed to specifically help children learn how to concurrently cope and manage their somatic symptoms as well as learn stress management skills. This program is specifically designed for children aged 7 to 17 years who are experiencing recurring somatic health complaints for at least 3 months (and which a GP or medical specialist has confirmed that the symptoms are medically benign). The program is individually based and involves 10 x 1 hour weekly therapy sessions held either in-person at the Centre for Emotional Health (CEH) Clinic at Macquarie University or via Skype or telephone. Interested families will be invited to attend a screening assessment to determine eligibility.
