A convenience store is easily defined as “not merely a place where customers come to buy practical necessities, it has to be somewhere they can enjoy and take pleasure in discovering things they like”. A convenience store woman, on the other hand, is harder to define although the answer seems so simple and straightforward as, “a woman who works in a convenience store”. Sayaka Murata introduces the reader to a range of people who work in a convenience store, male and female, managers and workers, so the idea of a convenience store woman is easily reaffirmed in the women who work there; but that is only because the reader is perceiving a convenience store woman from the norms of society.
Murata skilfully introduces the character of Keiko Furukura, and gradually makes the reader realise that conventional eyes only lead to conventional ideas and wisdom, and in doing so, they do not see, and therefore, do not understand the idea of individuality.
When the story is being told, Furukura is 36 years old and unmarried. She does not have a proper job for she had been working as a part-time convenience store woman when the store, the Hiiromachi Station Smile Mart store, first opened for business. She had just enrolled into university. She
Murata reveals the heart of social conventions in Japan, not only concerning women, but also of the men – as she reveals through the thoughts of Shiraha, a man who applied to work in the store when Furukura was already 36 years old. He too, like Furukura is single. He too does not have a proper job. He is tall – almost six foot – and awkward. Furukura and the other workers soon find that Shiraha is weird. When Furukura, out of curiosity, asked him why he had gone there to work, he merely replied, “marriage hunting”. His fellow workers and the manager found him stalking female customers and since he was not particularly diligent in his work, he was soon asked to leave.
The weight of social expectations is keenly felt by both Furukura and Shiraha. The only difference Shiraha tells her is that being male, his shelf-life is longer. Both know that by convention, they are like aliens. People are polite to them but talk behind their back. “Why is she not married?” “Why does she not have a proper job?” But the truth is that Furukura enjoys her job and has never found a need to be romantically involved with a man.
Out of the blue, she asks Shiraha to move in with her. Will that end their isolation from society, or will the hypocrisy of society (and even themselves) be exposed? This is a small book with a heavy punch.
applied to work at the store for extra pocket money. She was among the first staff members of the store. She has since seen many others come and go. The store is now into “manager #8”. Most were part-time workers just like Furukura herself. Furukura started work there when she was 18 years old, but now, aged 36, she is still there.
