. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Gareth Stevens

Warren’s 2009 USCA Nationals was a mixed bag. There were mostly

jewels, though a brick or two were dropped into the bag, too.

A great time was had by many (most, I’ll wager) but there were also a few complaints . There were many, many good races plus a few problematic ones . There was also delight in some quarters at the very large number of classes, medals, and Championship opportuni-ties – and dismay in others .

It is worth looking at good and bad, at all sides of these issues – and with the right attitude . When things go wrong, we can either lay blame, criticize and punish, or (my preference) learn, and do better in the future .

And, for issues like the greatly increased number of championship classes this year, it’s assessment time: we get to review if things have turned out well or badly – or somewhere in between .

This issue of Canoe News addresses a few of these questions (and some others) in Harpoon’s Index to the USCA’s Nationals (pages 6-7) . No conclusions are reached, though some are pointed to! The statis-tics presented are intended to give food for thought, even provide amusement in a few cases, with any luck .

However, first – and most importantly – a message of thanks, of tribute to the enormous amounts of work and time that went into this year’s event . We rec-ognize the many people who contribut-ed so much of their time and expertise for us all to enjoy the week’s events .

I worry that I’ll miss someone – please: no slight is intended if that happens .

The order of thanks below is thematic, ranking neither a person’s “importance” nor the magnitude of their contribu-tions . All these people, and some I’ve missed, no doubt, contributed mightily . And we’re grateful . That is the message!

Our sincere thanks and appreciations go to:Jim Decker of the Warren County Chamber of Business & Industry (WC-CBI), and the Warren County Council on Tourism (COT) for masterminding hosting our event, acting as race director throughout the week, coordinating with USCA officials and countless people and groups in Warren County (the Army Corps of Engineers and staff of Chapman State Park to name just two) and for his countless other helpful acts and services;WCCBI’s Melissa Anderson, Heidi Powley, Carolyn Spilka, and John Papalia for their cheerful dispositions, for race packet preparation, off-site and on-site race registration and much “in-visible” behind-the-scenes activity;John Kersey and his staff, for their great work timing and managing the race database and numerous Excel spreadsheets to publish timely results at the end of each day’s racing – and for his ongoing professional accounting advice to USCA;Pat Shine, and his wild water safety crew from the Glade Township Volunteer Fire Department who once again provid-ed safety oversight at the Flame Rapids; The City and County of Warren for another great welcome to their neck of the woods;James McCorkle and the staff at Chapman State Park for their efforts in maintaining an ideal sprint venue, and to Bob Klebacha and the staff of Bollinger Enterprises for the fine food service provided at the Park;A special thank you to the Army Corps of Engineers for managing the massive, challenging amounts of water this year, so that the Nationals marathon events could be run with controlled water flow and greater safety than Mother Nature had planned to provide!

2009 USCA Nationals Week in Warren, PA — A Mixed Bag It Was, Though Mostly Containing Jewels!

The folks from the Warren Kiwanis Club who made our spaghetti supper on Friday evening before the SemiAn-nual meeting; Warren Holiday Inn’s Karrie Kristea, for stepping in at short notice and mak-ing a great, pleasant conference room available to the USCA Delegates;Janet Perry, USCA President – for, among many other things, coordinat-ing the Barton Cup Epic Kayaks prize paddles and making the Barton Cup canoe paddle covers, and, in Ken Gerg’s words, “running a damned good meet-ing” – USCA’s SemiAnnual Meeting;Joan Theiss for all her work preparing for and taking minutes at the SemiAn-nual Meeting;All the USCA delegates, some of whom made a special effort to travel just to attend the SemiAnnual Meeting;John Edwards, USCA’s Executive Director & Nationals Coordinator – who laid out the complex and detailed registration form, planned the order of events, coordinated the week’s events with the Warren Chamber, and sang, inspiringly, the National Anthem at the start of each marathon day’s racing;Bill Corrigan, once again, for over-seeing both days of sprint competition;

Norm Ludwig, USCA Competition Chair stands as John Edwards sings the National Anthem before the start of Friday’s Marathon Championships.

A second error on Tuesday was being one radio short . This prevented us from determining if someone had scratched or was waiting for a boat to return from a previous race, so this caused a few problems and delays .

Despite these initial errors the Tuesday Adult Sprints and Adult/Youth Sprints went well .

On Thursday, the radio shortage was corrected and Youth Sprints ran very well .

Sprints Report . . . . . .Bill Corrigan – Sprints ChairmanThe 2009 USCA National Sprint Championships were held at Chapman State Park, the same location as in 2007, 2005, and 2003 . This year we were going to start the sprints on time — or so we thought . Somehow a misinfor-mation schedule was placed in the race packet bags stating 9:00am as the start-ing time for the sprints and not 8:00am . This error caught a few people out .

The ratio of Championship classes to paddlers racing canoes in 2008: 1 Championship to every 5 .4 canoersThe ratio of Championship classes to paddlers racing kayaks in 2008: 1 Championship to every 4 .5 kayakersThe ratio of Championship classes to paddlers racing canoes in 2009: 1 Championship to every 4 .6 canoers

The ratio of Championship classes to paddlers racing kayaks in 2009: 1 Championship to every 1 .85 kayakersThe number of medals available for paddlers racing canoes in 2008: 240 – a ratio of 1:1, one per canoer

The number of medals available for paddlers racing kayaks in 2008: 96 – a ratio of 1 .3:1, more than 1 per kayakerThe number of medals available for paddlers racing canoes in 2009: 252 – a ratio of 1 .2:1, more than 1 per canoer

The number of medals available for paddlers racing kayaks in 2009: 276 – a ratio of 2 .8:1, almost 3 per kayaker

The number of canoe classes that were available where a medal was guaranteed (more medals than participants):In 2008: 20 of the 44 classes In 2009: 31 of the 46 classes

The number of kayak classes that were available where a medal was guaranteed (more medals than participants):In 2008: 9 of the 16 classes In 2009: 45 of the 52 classes

The number of boats that Norm & Jerry and their crew had to jig (top five in every class, remember) . . .– in 2005: 167– in 2008: 185– in 2009: 234

. . . and Norm, Jerry, & co are thanking their lucky stars there were so many classes with none, or only one, two, or three participants . Still their jigging numbers went up dramatically .

Number of championship canoe classes where a paddler would have 10 or more others to compete with: In 2008: 4 of the 44 classes In 2009: 5 of the 46 classes

Number of championship kayak classes where a paddler would have 10 or more others to compete with:In 2008: 2 of the 16 classes In 2009: none of the 52 classes

The number of competitors that a certain midwestern paddler who wishes to remain anonymous (not wishing there to be a target on his back) . . . the number of competitors that this paddler thinks should be

in a race, at minimum, for that race to qualfiy as a credible national championship: 20 . . . or so .

What would the top paddlers, the mid-pack paddlers, and the back-of-the-pack paddlers that you know say to that question?

How do you wrestle with that question?

I think everyone had a good time at the 2009 USCA National Sprint Races .

We all owe Jim Decker and his Warren volunteers a big Thank You, for the reg-istration, finish line timing, and results . All the USCA volunteers at the sprints, from those passing out boat numbers, to those on the water providing safety oversight, to those handing out awards deserve our thanks . Without such an army of volunteers the races would not happen .

The Le Mans start – reminiscent visually of Monty Python’s “100-yards dash for people with no sense of direction” as some competitors chose to head south on foot to Control #10, some headed north on foot to scope out #s 9 & 8, and others ran for their boats to paddle north or south according to the plan they had devised in the one minute they’d had to study their map.

USCA National Canoe Orienteering ChampionshipsHigh Water, High Excitement at Canoe-O . . . . Aims Coney, Race Director

From the high bridge of Route 321, I watched as the favorites Seth and Steve Miller punched

their final control and swung around toward the finish. It was nearly an hour and a half after the orienteering start, getting near the expected win-ning time.

It isn’t every canoe-orienteering event that’s spectator friendly, but this year the entire venue was ringed by roads with great viewing spots . I’d seen action all around the course, watched a kayak roll over and spill its paddler as she tried jumping in from a boulder, saw one well-known competitor running back and forth in a frenzy looking for a trail while his partner waited anxiously around the bend, and saw numerous paddlers going every which way . But now I wanted to be there when the Millers finished and won yet another championship .So, I jumped in the car and headed back, parking and running downhill to the finish line, just barely in time . But wait, that’s not Seth and Steve pulling their boat onto shore, that’s Lisa Bainey and Randy Bailey, with the Millers behind them still on the water . It’s an upset – Bainey and Bailey have come the other way and won by over a minute! This was the fourth canoe orienteering Nationals in Warren and the third where I was course set-ter . After three courses on the Allegheny River, it seemed time for something different, a lake per-haps . However, after scanning Google Earth for water bodies, there seemed to be nothing suitable within an hour’s drive . Chapman Lake is way too

small and the enormous Allegheny Reservoir above the Kinzua Dam looked way too big and would be pretty rough in even a moderate wind . However, careful study over the winter of those satellite images revealed that one small, sheltered bay of the reservoir might actually do . Campgrounds along the shores offered complex, twisting road networks and the bay ended in a small, confusing delta where three streams joined . It would do just fine and so the south end of Kinzua Bay became the appointed venue .I travelled to Warren in May, rented a small motorboat, and explored the bay as I mapped it . I mapped subtle beaches and spots where streams entered . I drew in trails and roads . Then, at home as the summer rolled on, I worried that by Nationals week the reservoir level would fall, that the beaches would be far bigger, and the stream mouths different .Instead, when I arrived in August, thanks to heavy rains in southwestern New York, I was stunned to find the reservoir level was four feet higher than mapped . Those subtle strip beaches were gone and the islands had disappeared under-water . Moreover, the Army Corps of Engineers warned that the water would keep rising overnight, maybe another foot or two . That meant I had to hang the orienteering flags on land, not along the water, and that meant the orienteering would be more technical, more challenging . To compensate, I elimi-nated the farthest two locations, cutting out about a mile . Considering the 91 minute winning times, it was good I did .Congratulations to Lisa and Randy, new USCA National Canoe Orienteering Champions . Congratulations, too, to all the people who tried orienteering for the first time as well as to those who’ve been loyally coming every year .

The favorites, Stephen and Seth Miller, paddling out of the flooded delta after punching the control there, now heading north towards the finish line.

And the winners ... wait... the surprise win-ners are Randy Bailey (bow) & Lisa Bainey.

Glistening from his run and search for Control #6, Tom Walton punches his card.

Linda Charles arrives at Control #5 as Jake Rabatin leaves, having punched his card.

The start of the tenth edition Run-Paddle Biathlon, named for the late Phil Soule, an early Biathlon participant, a great sport, and a much missed and fondly remembered friend.

Philip H. Soule Run-Paddle Biathlon Wednesday, August 12, 2009, Betts Park

Like the nine USCA Biathlons that preceded this year’s thriller at Betts Park, our 2009 Biathlon was great fun. Thirty-eight competi-

tors ran or paddled (or did both) to the delight of an adoring throng of enthusiastic race fans. Our National Biathlon is a 3k run followed by a 3k paddle with a short sprint portage/drag to the finish line.

One reason for the incredible popularity of this event is that anyone can partipipate . If you are not a runner, no worries: we will find some-one to handle the run . At Peshtigo in 2010, many of Peshtigo’s high school cross-country runners will be available to help you, if needed .This year’s tenth edition of the the Biathlon offered beautiful silver bowls to the first Iron(solo) male and female finishers, Tom Walton (NH) and Kate Wenrich (PA) . Race director Walton was clear in prerace instruction that this USCA unofficial fun event is about participation and finding enjoyment in healthy competition . Clearly, eight year old Lyndsey “Pebbles” Stone (MI) understood the spirit of the event as she crossed the finish with a bright smile, after having run 3k and having assisted her team mates Priscilla Reinertsen (NH) and the venerable ninety year old Phil Cole (NH) with portage duty .As always, the Biathlon was followed by the traditional Phil Soule Soirée, named “party of the week” by Paris Hilton who tried paddling once at girl scout camp . See you on Wednesday at 4pm during USCA Nationals week in 2010 .Results and more photos on the following two pages.

The Best Week of My Summer . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Jackie Stone

My week at Nationals is always the best and most eventful week of my

summer. I love attending the Nationals every year and seeing all of my friends from all over the country that I never get to see otherwise. There are always new people to meet, and more events to try.

The nonstop rain this year proved to be an obstacle for my family . We had made arrangements to stay at a campground along the river that we had stayed at the last time Nationals were held in Pennsylvania, but with the water level rising up so high, we were flooded out . That was one stressful thing we didn’t need . Once we had made plans to stay at another campground, we were able to give the events for the rest of the week our full attention .On Tuesday, my family participated in the Adult/Youth Sprints . My little sister Lindsey raced with Priscilla Reinertsen, and they took a fourth place medal . My younger brother Brennan raced with Holly Reynolds and they managed to take first . I was very nervous about my race with Pam Fitzgerald; we had never paddled together before . We had only just met before the events began! Once I was in the boat with her and ready to go, I felt better and much more confident . We had an exciting race, and took first place . I am glad I had the chance to race with Pam, and I would love to race with her again .Everyone there who knew Lindsey Stone was proud of her on Wednesday because of how well she did in the Biathlon . She was on a team with Priscilla Reinertsen and Phil Cole and she ran for them . She ran almost the whole distance, only walking for about a minute, and she finished strong . That is no small thing for an eight year old, and I was so proud of her . I was also on a team, with my close friend Anna Tomp-kins . She ran for us and I paddled . She ran her hardest, and I paddled as well as I could in the crazy current . The hardest part was making the turns, but I ended up mak-ing some really amazing turns around the buoys . I was proud of myself and of Anna .Thursday was the all youth sprints day, and I began the day with six events ahead of me .

My first race was the C2 Women Junior with one of my close friends, Nathalie Hanson . We took first place, and I had awhile after that race until my next one, so I was able to relax . My next race was supposed to be the C2 Girl Juvenile race, but since I was the only Girl Juvenile there, the race was dropped . After some more waiting, things began to get very crazy . Since I was the only Girl Juvenile, I raced against the boys so that I had someone to race with . I didn’t do as well as I had hoped, but it was better than nothing . Once I got back from that race I had to go straight to the K1 Woman Junior race, which I also wasn’t too happy with . I knew when I got back to shore that I had the C1 Woman Junior to do after that, but I could see they were already out on the water waiting for me . So, as I started to get ready, I decided to drop it instead, so that they wouldn’t have to wait for me . I was so glad I decided that, because I was tired from my other sprints . I finished the day racing with my good friend Mark Sayger in the C2 Mixed Open . We came in third; I was happy with that . The marathons have never used to be my favorite part of the week, but this year they were . On Friday I raced the C1Woman Junior marathon and had a good race . I didn’t tip over in the rapids, and I am proud of myself for that . Saturday was the C2 Women Junior race, which I competed in with Anna Tompkins . This was my favorite race of the whole week . We had fun to-

gether and we raced very well . We also had some exciting competition in the beginning of the race against our good friends Lilly Manns and Devann Benson . For about the first half of the race we fought them for the lead . We would pull ahead, then they would pull ahead, and it just went like that for a while . Then, we got stuck on a sharp turn and they passed us for good . Anna and I still finished strong and we are proud of ourselves for doing as well as we did . My last marathon was the C2 Man Youth on Sunday with Jeff Shenberger . I was excited to paddle with someone new and to see how it went . I had a lot of fun racing with Jeff and I think we did great considering we had never paddled together before . Jeff taught me a lot about paddling that day .On Friday night at the campground we were staying at, there was a paddling clinic held at the Rice Creek Boat Club’s camp site, which was very close to ours . Peter Heed came in and taught us about drafting . I was very happy that he came in to talk to us, and very grateful .Nationals are always so much fun for my whole family . The races are fun, and hang-ing out at the campground with our club and other clubs is equally just as fun . I am going to continue to participate at Nationals until I can’t any more* . I can’t wait to see everyone next year in Peshtigo!

*Editor’s note: I do believe Phil Cole once said the same thing; he’s 90 now, and still a regular at Nationals!

Youth Sprints Divisional Traveling Trophy Thursday, August 13, 2009

A traveling trophy is awarded to the divisional grouping winning the most points at Youth sprints.

The trophy was donated in 1997 . The awarding of points follows the same pattern as for the Marathon State Points Trophy (50 points for a first place, 45 points for a 2nd, and so on) with the same rule applying to foreign competitors .

The states comprising the Divisions making up the Groups can be seen listed on page 58 of this issue .

State Marathon Points Trophy Friday-Sunday, August 14-16, 2009

Each paddler placing in the top 10 of his or her class wins points for his/her state: 50 points for a first place, 45 for 2nd, 40 for

3rd and so on, down through 5 points for a 10th place.

Foreign competitors (unless they are resident in the US for at least two years) do not earn points for a state, nor does their country appear in the official rankings . However, their foreign state or province’s “positions” are given here for interest .

John EdwardsPaddler of the Year, 2009 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . submitted by Ken Gerg

Upon arriving home after the 2008 USCA Nationals, I unloaded the truck

and one well-packed item: the monumental Paddler of the Year traveling trophy. Prior to that, I hadn’t had much time to appreciate or, for that matter, to look it over. Now I had time and, when I began to examine it, I was more than a little bit overwhelmed and humbled by the names/individuals and couples of the prior honorees. To say the very least, these folks are and were the icons of our sport.

Not all were paddlers or great paddlers (some were) but for the most part they were people who knew and loved the sport of canoeing, not just racing .They were people who made colossal contri-butions to the growth and success of the United States Canoe Association . They are/were canoe design builders . They were folks who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the USCA a vibrant organization on the right track . They included people who paddled thousand of miles, some of whom won a pile of USCA medals in the process . Others played a vital role in keeping us a 5 star organization thereby protecting our 501(c)3 status . One individual, who has done wonders with the physically handi-capped, was honored twice . The list has included people that knew and loved canoe-ing and, for the most part, the USCA .After looking over the past recipients, it struck me that one name/person who had essentially done so much and served so long was never honored . How could this hap-pen? The guy has been with the organiza-tion almost from its inception, served as Vice President, President, Executive Direc-tor, filled in as assistant to the “temporary” Treasurer, Race Organizer, meeting planner, etc, etc, and also competes at a very high level given his “advanced years” .John Edwards it seemed to me was LONG overdue for this honor and given the enthu-siasm of those who signed on for submit-ting his name, I feel many others agreed .John, for all you have done for the USCA and for all we hope you will continue to do, we salute you . Congratulations on a long overdue honor . We wish you many enjoy-able paddling days in the years to come . For my part, I just enjoy hearing you sing the National Anthem!

Marsh Jones Wins 2009 Youth Encouragement Award . . . . . . . . submitted by Ellen Roy, Ethan Evenson, Margaret DiGiorno, Teegan Harrington, Nick McGrory, Lilly Manns, Leandra Londo, Laurel HarringtonA number of nominations for the Youth Encouragement Award (YEA) were received, and the selection committee unanimously chose Marsh Jones for YEA 2009!Here is the nomination submission of Marsh’s name from the members of the Rice Creek Boat Club:“The members of the Rice Creek Boat Club nominate Marsh Jones for the Youth Encouragement Award . Marsh

Linda Charles wins the 2009 Bill Klebe Award for Good Sporstmanship

There was more than enough good sportsmanship to go around this

year at Nationals – and it is worth, I think, presenting all the nominations:

1) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . submitted by D Marshall, Jr (8-15-09) and two people with hard-to-read signatures....”“In the C1 Junior race — Ellen Roy, Leandra Londo, and Jackie Stone all stopped their races when Anna Tompkins flipped after Flame Rapids, abandoning their placings to ensure Anna’s safety .”

2) . . . . . . . submitted by Anna Tompkins“I would like to nominate Lilly Manns and Ellen Roy from the Rice Creek Boat Club for the Sportsmanship Award . At the start of the race, I ran into Lilly’s boat and dropped my paddle . Instead of beginning to paddle, without hesita-tion, she gave me her extra paddle . Thankfully, I was able to continue down the river . At the rapids, when I flipped, Ellen stopped and helped me get back in my boat . Instead of secur-ing a spot for herself in third place, she wanted to make sure I was OK . Both of these girls showed that they were excellent competitors, but they were more concerned for my safety .”

has done an immense amount of work to promote paddling in Minnesota, particularly in the Junior divisions . “Rest assured, you will be seeing a crew of overeager Minnesotans for decades to come . Even putting his thousands of hours of training, equipment repair and planning aside, Marsh has been abso-lutely invaluable for his encouragement of good sportsmanship and a healthy go-out-and-do-your-best attitude . “Marsh’s patience, generosity, and dedication have most definitely inspired everyone who has had the opportunity to work with him, and his legacy is sure to have a lasting effect on the vivacity of the United States Canoe Association . Paddle on friends!”

3) . . . . . . . . submitted by Tave Lamperez“Saturday, 8/15/2009 at 11:10AM – Canoe Juniors Nick McGrory and Ethen Evenson, both from St Paul, MN stopped to help a C1 paddler who flipped and was having trouble . They gave up a solid 2nd place at the time, and finished third .”

4) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .submitted unsigned“Linda Charles lost 5 to 10 minutes or more because she chose to stay with another kayaker (Jeff Sosa, boat QQ6) throughout the race . He overturned several times during the race and she stayed with him to make sure he would make it through the race OK . I feel she deserves this award because she put her race second to helping out a fellow competitor . “I also think she deserves this award because it doesn’t matter if she’s first or last, you never see her without a smile . She doesn’t ever let her competitiveness get in the way having fun . In my opin-ion that’s a pretty good quality to have .”

The selection committee had a hard time with this one, but in the end chose Linda Charles .Linda and the other nominees are won-derful examples – to us all – not only of good sporting behavior, but of camara-derie and having a healthy perspective on competition . Thank you – all .

Over the Gunwales . . . . . . . . Janet Perry, President, USCA

I went. I raced. I lost. And, I’ve got the medals to prove it.

That pretty much describes every Nationals I’ve been to in the last seven years . (I’ve been to many more Nation-als than that, for the record .) “I went . I raced . I lost,” are the positive part of that description . The “And, I’ve got the medals to prove it,” is not the positive part of that description .

Going to Nationals is mostly fun . There are many friends to catch up with off the water even if I never stick with them on the water .

There are usually dinner partners whose names I know but whose fascinating his-tories I’ve never heard — Phil Cole filled that role, this year . He told me his phi-losophy of coaching cross-country skiiers for over 30 years, he told me something about his lineage (he’s related to the painter who founded the Hudson River School of landscape painting — just Google it, you’ll see . . .), and he told me the best thing any competitor can do is to teach your competition to be at least as good as you are, so that you always have people to race with . Don’t worry too much about equipment; worry more about being as fine as your fellows on the field of sport as you can . Like other fine athletes I’ve known, he believes in teaching others what you learn, to make them as successful as you can be . Build a community of good athletes, and you’ll always be surrounded by real friends .

At Nationals there’s always something new to try . I chose to afflict Aims Coney, the Orienteering Competition Chair, with my participation at his race . You know what? Photographs don’t do Aims any justice at all — the only portrait of Aims that could capture that merry, tolerant twinkle in his eye, would be a painting by a really good artist . You know what else? There were some really good paddlers at that event! Aims will read that sentence with frustration

and resignation, but I’ve been told for years we should take orienteering off the schedule . I’ve argued against it, even arguing against Aims himself telling us that USCA is not interested in a com-petitive orienteering event at Nationals . I’d never participated in canoe orienteer-ing, nor have I ever registered at the Na-tionals version of it . I’d heard, from fine paddlers, that it’s a blast . I’d read Aims’ wonderful reports in Canoe News, and it sounded like he knew how to do it, so I figured I might have fun . It never oc-curred to me, with all that quality there, that I would win a medal . Good grief . I shouldn’t have done . I missed two controls, mis-punched two controls, fol-lowed someone to find two controls, and didn’t exactly worry about the compass too much — even though I did have a compass so that I’d look like one of the “the real ones” . But I finished in time . I was as muddy and wet as everyone else . And I think I had as much fun, too . Aims congratulated me with just as much enthusiasm as he did anyone else, and I’m in the picture of the people who participated .I think Aims is the one who deserved a medal — for putting up with my ques-tions! Because there have been a LOT of questions! I’ve learned a lot from Aims over the last two years! He wouldn’t accept my effort to award him my medal though, no matter how hard I tried to press it on him! “Think of it as inspiration,” he advised — his mouth holding that wry little grin that says he could say more but won’t . I started to ask anyway, but he was off to fix something with the computer results before I could nail him . Story of my life .Well, getting a championship medal on Wednesday morning wasn’t embarrass-ing enough for someone who’d had only about 1 - 2 hours on the water per week since spring . So, on that same Wednes-day, I failed again, with determination and grit, and won a medal at Tom Walton’s Biathlon . Sure, I was ahead of some kayakers because in a canoe I could run the bank a lot closer than they could . Yes, I wasn’t dead last on the run . I definitely ran the portage hard enough to nearly black out

at the finish . But the quality of com-petitors around me was way higher than my talents, and greater in number than at Orienteering! The only thing I did differently than all the other women in my age division was to go solo! I kinda think I got a medal for not being able to get a partner in time for the race . So, a champion again! At least, though, this was a “fun, unofficial” race, and so I was a “fun, unofficial” champion! When I mentioned my misgivings to Tom, he told me, “Everyone should get a medal for doing what they didn’t think they could do . Or for what other people don’t expect them to do . We get medals for being courageous, Janet,” he paused, then grinned, “And, it’s your ticket to the post-race soirée — so don’t scoff at it!”Sadly, I couldn’t make the post-race soi-rée . I needed to call my Mom . It proved to be auspicious, though I didn’t know it at the time .She asked me, did I win that day? “Nope,” I told her, but my reply was out of tune with the noise from my compan-ions in the hotel room, who denied that I had lost! “You sound a bit too happy about losing, and Tave makes it sound like you won,” she noted .“Well, I got medals,” I admitted, “but I didn’t win .”I explained how I finished near last everywhere but that I’d had a really great day, and summed it up with, “It’s the USCA way .”Several people in our room groaned . Mom laughed for the first time in a long time .“That’s confusing . . . .” she paused, “Can’t you change it?”“Lots of people have to agree,” I told her, “I can’t do it by myself .”She said, “You need more allies, and less alloy?”Yup . And, there’s lots of listening to be done — on all sides of the issue — be-fore we win the argument that it’s OK to fail — that being allowed to enjoy racing and losing at Nationals (unalloyed by any medal) is in itself worth while .

Advice from the Vice . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Ken Gerg, VP, USCAI just spent the weekend of 9/11 through 9/13 doing my 22nd Adirondack 90 Mile Canoe Classic . It has always been a chal-lenging adventure and this year was no exception . My partners were daughter Colleen and husband and wife Toni and Randy Flament . We didn’t win but fin-ished a respectable 6th; blame it on my age . I can still paddle, but the portages, especially Raquette Falls, are getting to be a real challenge .When I first did this event in 1987, I thought they had too many classes . It seemed there was a class for anything that could be paddled or considered a boat/ca-noe/kayak/dugout, etc, that would float .

As the years have gone by, I have a new perspective . At last count I think there currently are some 16 classes (including guide boats, war and voyageur canoes) . The largest class is Open Touring . There are NO 1st, 2nd or 3rd place awards given in this class . Essentially, you are in this class to participate and hopefully you will finish . Times are kept and cut off points are enforced .Having also just been involved in our USCA Nationals I thought a little com-parison might be interesting . Would you be shocked to know that USCA has some 90 classes? Talk about TOO MANY CLASSES! We have classes, especially in the kayak area, where we had NO partici-pants (approximately 10 classes, maybe more) and many (maybe another 10) where we had ONE . I would ask, “How can that be a NATIONAL championship”?My “Advice from the Vice” at this time is that we take a long hard look at the

classes and let’s “restart” enforcing the 7-boat rule to drop classes – take it down to 5 boats, but ONE is just ridiculous . If we keep expanding our classes, perhaps we could just do away with our little Nationals “get together” and just mail each and every USCA member a medal . If they want more than one, charge $5 or so per extra – or maybe $15 for gold, $10 for silver and $5 for bronze . There should be seven (7) NATIONAL Championship races – C1 Woman, C1 Man, C2 Women, C2 Men, C2 Mixed, K1 Woman and K1 Man . All others should be USCA Class Champions – not USCA National Champions . I know that some reading this opinion will have a lower heating bill this winter as I am sure it will make them “hot under the collar”! However, I suspect that many others will agree with me .

Cheers! — Ken
