DIRECTOR’S NOTE
Candide is a musical theater classic. It is also a nightmare to stage.
When I first found out that CMTS had acquired the show rights, I was thrilled that I would be able to bring one of my favorite works to life. However, the panic quickly set in: how would I stage a show with so many characters, so many different locales, and relatively large pit in a black box? Further, what perspective could I offer that would justify this performance? I considered several approaches, until one day, while listening to the overture, I began imagining a group of actors preparing for a performance. Thus, the frame for our production was born. The play’s central idea -‐ that no single, neat philosophical system can adequately address the cruelty and chaos of life – can sometimes be lost among the songs and jokes. My hope was that acknowledging that we are watching a work of art – another way of making sense of life – would ensure that this idea was a constant throughout the show, rather than an afterthought.
Directing this show has been an incredibly fulfilling experience, and I’m so grateful to have gotten the opportunity to explore these ideas with such a talented group of people. Thanks to Emile, the CMTS board, the brilliant creative and production teams, and my hilarious, ever-‐inspiring cast. They have truly made this (wait for it) the Best of All Possible Shows.

BIOS Isaac Assor (Maximillian, CC '14) is thrilled to be a part of CMTS’s production of Candide. This cast, creative team, and production team have been one of the warmest, funniest, and most dedicated groups of people that he has had the privilege of working with. He would like to thank Dad, Mom, Ben and Jamie for their love and support, and his friends for always being there for him, even when he forgets to do his dishes when he runs off to rehearsal. All's for the best in this best of all possible worlds. Kathryn Barr (Ensemble, BC '16) flew halfway around the world from her humble home in Manhasset, Long Island when she heard CMTS was doing a production of Candide. And being a part of Candide has only encouraged her life-‐long dream of abandoning her studies to become a pygmy. She wishes all the best for the cast, and crew, and hopes you all enjoy the show! Brett Berger (Tech Director/Lighting Designer, SEAS '15) originally wrote a really informational bio, but my producer rejected it and now I'm writing this one. Fifty words. Hrmmmm. I'm going to dedicate an entire sentence in my bio to the African Swallow; the African Swallow, while having virtually no relation to Candide, is a pretty spectacular species of bird. Gina Marie Borden (Choreographer, BC '14) is proud to choreograph for this talented cast. Gina has worked with CMTS since her freshman year, making her debut as Tintinabula in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the

Gina has worked with CMTS since her freshman year, making her debut as Tintinabula in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the
Forum (Fall 2010), and choreographing Zombie Prom (Fall 2011). Other choreographic roles include XMAS!7 and The 119th Annual Varsity Show this coming May. Ilana Breitman (Costume Designer, Barnard/JTS '13) writes very entertaining bios. ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!?!? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsqJFIJ5lLs (Also, she's a Classics major.) Lisa Campbell (Paquette, BC '13) Laughs Contagiously, Loathes Clouds, Likes Cooking, Lusts Constantly, Lives Carefree, Looks Caucasian, Lauds Cast, Loves Candide! Jessie Chasan-‐Taber (Asst. Producer, CC '16) is super duper jazzed to be a part of Candide– her inaugural production at Columbia! Working with this incredible group of people has made her realize that this must be the best of all possible casts, crews, productions...well, worlds! Jessica Chi (Publicity Manager, CC '15) loves this entire cast and crew, Parmesan Goldfish, Pinterest, and YOU. She thanks all seven followers (including herself) of the CMTSCandide Instagram for their unwavering support of this production. Shout-‐out to the wonderful delivery staff of Crepes on Columbus for providing her with most of her meals throughout the semester. Nicholas Chong (Music Director, 4th year graduate student) studied conducting at the College-‐Conservatory of Music (CCM), University of Cincinnati. Currently, he is working towards a PhD in music history at Columbia, but remains an active performer, as both a conductor and a singer. His
conducting experience includes a professional engagement with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra in Michigan, as well as operatic and symphonic performances with student ensembles at CCM and Yale University. Claire Ding (Stage Manager, CC '15) is the iPhone thief. She's not sorry for her crimes; it pays for her Student Life fees. She once walked in front of a group of people filming while carrying the ship puppet and now Candide is forever memorialized in some freshman LitHum project. She will always cherish the memory of Shelley asking Piper to make a limp with her butt. Fernanda Douglas (Asst. Vocal Director, CC '16) would like to congratulate Shelley, Ally, Nicholas and Michael, Candide's fearless leaders, as well as the cast and crew on their accomplishments over the past three months. She encourages you to read way too far into the plot and laugh heartily at ALL the jokes. Ally Engelberg (Producer, BC '15) thinks Nationwide is on her side. Even when she's late to her shift at the banana stand or when she forgets who Regina Falange really is. She is an advocate of the Arts and the Moustache Institute of America and she still thinks Brett knows the answer to every question ever. Shelley Farmer (Director, BC '14) has directed three shows, and this is her first with CMTS. She wants to thank her best of all possible casts for their dedication, energy, and willingness to commit to crass, acrobatic blocking. She also pledges her undying love to her incredible creative and production teams, and credits.

Rivka Friedlander (Ensemble, GS/JTS '13) plays many roles in life, as well as in the ensemble of this show. She thanks her family and friends for their support, always. Carolina Garrigo (Asst. Director, CC '15) is single. She loves Candide and everyone and everything in it. Bagels and J.Crew scarves are on her must list and so are Tom Hanks and Kevin Bacon circa the 1980s. Honestly, she’s just biding her time until the new season of Sherlock. P.S. Cut loose. Footloose. Michael Gildin (Vocal Director, CC '15) feels vindicated that he is finally a part of a production of an obscure musical. Somewhat accidentally joining this adventure and consequently working with this immensely passionate, intelligent, and humble team has caused him to abandon cynicism and realize that “Life is Happiness Indeed.” Becca Guthrie (Asst. Costume Designer/Hair and Makeup, BC '16) is thrilled to be involved in her first CMTS show! After making her debut as the Christmas tree in the first grade, Becca has been in love with musicals. Ask her to name the last twenty winners of the Tony’s “Best Musical.” She will most likely be able to tell you. Thanks to Shelley, Ally, and Ilana for all the opportunities! Grant Gutierrez (Pangloss/Governor/ Narrator, CC '15) is excited to be back on stage living in his imagination in his first Columbia University production. The people of the theatre never fail to entertain and the entire process of this show has been a delight. A hug and kiss to his mother who flew from his (former) home in quiet Northern California to see the show, and a warm welcome to you all. Enjoy!
Kyle Johnson (Ensemble, CC '16) is thrilled to be in Candide, his first show at Columbia! He would like to thank his family for supporting him (and for seeing all his shows) and this best of all possible casts and crews for being so ridiculously talented. John Kenney (Ensemble, CC '13) is a Philosophy major focusing on answering the ontological question that is Taylor Swift. John would like to thank everyone in the production for their hard work, and his family for their never-‐ending support. Cameron Lemley (Ensemble, SEAS '16) is very excited to be performing in Candide, the best of all possible musicals! He is studying astrophysics and spends most of his free time perusing the city on a great quest to find the perfect plate of chicken curry. Hilary Mogul (Electrician, SEAS '15) used to be really afraid of heights. Now, she feels more at home on the black box grid than her own (cramped) dorm room. Her other hobbies include staring off into space and overthinking everything she does. Piper Rasmussen (Old Lady, BC '16) is. Favorite roles back home in Ohio include Andromache (The Trojan Women), Stephana (The Merchant of Venice) and the Mock Turtle (Alice in Wonderland). Piper loves purple, puns, playwriting, and (unsurprisingly) every perfect, peerless person who took part in this production of Candide. Christine Rosenblatt (Cunegonde, BC '16) hails from Long Island, and is thrilled to be making her college theater

debut! Previously, Christine has played Belle in Beauty and the Beast among other roles. She would like to thank her family for their constant support, and lots of love to the cast and crew for making this the best of all possible shows she could ask for. Enjoy! Angela Scorese (Ensemble, BC '16) is a coffee/cupcake aficionado from NJ who enjoys creating awkward situations. You may have seen her this summer as Sarah Brown in OnStage, Inc.’s production of Guys and Dolls. She would like to thank her friends, her family, her wonderful voice teachers Jean-‐Paul Bjorlin and Carol Skarimbas, and especially Shelley for being the best of all possible directors! BREAK A LEG! Smita Sen (Asst. Choreographer, CC '16) is fifty-‐six different kinds of fabulous. Trust her. Zachary Small (Candide, CC '15) is very fond of potatoes. He is jazzed to make his debut on the Columbia stage after being abandoned by a troupe of actors in Holland, but more about that later. He would like to thank his friends and family for their support during this confusing time, and Ally for not lighting the banana stand on fire. Unfathomable Candide Quotations “There cannot possibly be an effect without a cause”….”noses were made to support spectacles, hence we have spectacles.”…”Legs were made to be breeched, and so we have breeches.” Rivka was made to perform hence we have Performances. From Pepper to Little Red and Little Red to Urine Town and Urine Town to Anne and Anne to Daisy and Daisy to Hudel and Hudel to UV and now Candide, the show goes on and on and on. “Which is worse”? … “having a buttock cut off, running the gauntlet in the Bulgar army, being flogged and hanged”… or missing Rivka’s performances? -- “It’s a hard question” … since “man was bound to live either in convulsions of misery or in the lethargy of boredom” I choose theatrical entertainment, the best form of both. And “since all events are linked together in the best of possible worlds” attendance tonight supports the performance and the performance supports our attendance.
From which we infer….

THE COLUMBIA MUSICAL THEATRE SOCIETY The mission of CMTS is to bring musical theatre to the Columbia University community, to provide opportunities for Columbia students of all schools, majors, and backgrounds to participate in theatre both onstage and behind-‐the-‐scenes, and to strive for the highest quality of artistic excellence. CMTS also aims to inspire enthusiasm and build community around musical theatre on campus. We invite you to get involved!
