AUT BUSINESS SCHOOL A history of meeting the needs of residents and local business across Auckland (New Zealand’s largest commercial centre), and broadening participation and success in university education, continues to influence AUT and Business School strategy.

In all our programmes, there is an increasing focus on learning for future success, which is aimed at equipping students with the dispositions, skills, knowledge, and values needed to thrive in a changing world. Students learn from leading academics, and can choose from multiple areas of study – from traditional business fields to multidisciplinary subjects from across the university. We also offer a range of professional masters and research postgraduate programmes, as well as having a large number of PhD students.

Our Bachelor of Business graduates are primed to enter the business world – having undertaken a workplace experience in the business environment of their choice

in the last phase of their degree. We also ensure our graduates are prepared for the challenging global environment, through incorporating an international, multicultural and outward-facing dimension into our programmes.

Key in our Bachelor of Business is a focus on social impact. Through three core, compulsory courses, students study contemporary issues and consider ethical approaches to business decision-making and problem-solving.

Aligned to a growing emphasis on social impact and relevance, the School’s engagement strategy prioritises partnerships with impact. The School is pursuing relationships with business and not-for-profit organisations that both enhance the relevance of programmes and curricula and advance the School’s key social agendas: promoting diversity and inclusion, opportunity for Māori and Pacific, and employability for all.

AUT BUSINESSSCHOOL RESEARCHWe aim to conduct research that matters. Our researchers are recognised experts in their fields and produce research of relevance to our academic, industry, and community stakeholders. They contribute to New Zealand’s social and economic goals.

They produce high quality publications and disseminate their work nationally and internationally to a variety of audiences and their work informs our curriculum. We also have a strong cohort of postgraduate research students.

We have invested substantially in developing our research capability. The last national research assessment exercise (PBRF), recorded a significant increase in our research performance, with over 75% of academic staff evaluated

as active researchers by international standards.

Our researchers are well connected internationally - taking up appointments and invitations, conducting primary research, and collaborating with co-authors as well as welcoming a steady number of visiting researchers to AUT.

As a member of the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) initiative, the Business School has also made a commitment to engage in research that advances knowledge and understanding of the implications for business of social responsibility and environmental sustainability.

The Business School has six research concentrations; the:

• New Zealand Work Research Institute

• Auckland Centre for Financial Research

• Centre for Occupational Health and Safety Research

• AUT Centre for Social Data Analytics

Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city with a population

of around 1.4 million people. Set between the sparkling

waters of the Waitemata and Manukau harbours, Auckland

is dotted with volcanic hills, many of which were once the

site of Māori pas, or fortified villages, and which currently

afford great views of the city.

Auckland is the centre of commerce and industry, and is

the most vibrant, bustling and multicultural city in New

Zealand. Auckland’s heart beats to a Polynesian rhythm, its

people a melting pot of European, South Pacific and Asian

cultures and a strong indigenous Māori heritage. This

diversity brings with it an abundance of unique cultural

experiences.

A water lover’s paradise, Auckland has some of the best

beaches, swimming, diving, fishing, sailing, windsurfing,

and water sports in the country. Enjoy the many beaches

within minutes of the city - or venture a little further afield

to explore the islands of the Hauraki Gulf or the untamed

West Coast surf beaches. A cloak of rainforest covers the

surrounding hills, dozens of dormant volcanic cones dot

the landscape and enchanting holiday islands are scattered

throughout the vast Hauraki Gulf.

Auckland is home to diverse ethnic groups from all over the

world. The Māori, New Zealand’s indigenous people, called

this land ‘Tamaki Makau Rau’, a maiden with 100 lovers. It

was a place desired by many and fought over for its riches,

including its forested hills, productive soils and harbours

full of seafood.

Auckland has historic places that offer a fascinating

glimpse of Māori history, with pa sites and monuments

to the tangata whenua (indigenous people). You can take

a walk through the city with a guide from the local iwi

(tribe), visit the Auckland Museum, or wander through the

weekend markets for the flavours, sounds and sights of the

South Pacific.

In the city centre, Auckland has seen an explosion of ethnic

restaurants and shops. A variety of festivals and ethnic

restaurants allow a taste of diverse cultures all year round.

Auckland’s temperate climate, easy access to the coast

and variety of activities earn the city consistent top five

rankings in international lifestyle surveys.
