Practice Educator (Nursing and Midwifery) APPLICANT GUIDE BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON THE PRACTICE EDUCATOR POST The Nursing and Midwifery Practice Educator role was introduced in 2012 as part of NHS Education for Scotland’s commitment to fully supporting NHS Boards in the ongoing learning and development of nurses and midwives. The role is intended to enhance the existing NHS Scotland practice education infrastructure. The national network of Practice Educators is a valuable resource for all nurses and midwives and NHS Boards in their preparation for meeting NMC revalidation requirements. The role brings learning and development resources, directly relevant to their clinical care, closer to where nurses and midwives practice. Specifically, assisting Boards to develop and deliver education for nurses and midwives linked to key national clinical priority areas with a clear focus on better outcomes for patients, families, service users and carers. What will be the key responsibilities of the Practice Educator? The Practice Educator will deliver key objectives that are agreed annually by NES in collaboration with the Boards to ensure customisation to the Board’s clinical priorities. The key responsibilities of the role are:

• Support patient-centred care and quality improvement through contributing to the development and delivery of related, and specific, education for nurses and midwives.

• Support quality assurance and governance arrangements in relation to professionalism, continuing professional development and revalidation for nurses and midwives

• Develop strategies to ensure equity of access to appropriate education and learning and development opportunities, with a specific focus on level 5 and 6 nurses and midwives in direct care giving roles.

• Facilitate uptake and embedding of education that supports older people and person-centred care, specifically related to supporting implementation of NES priorities linked to Patient Rights (Scotland) Act 2011

• Actively engage with aspects of quality of care and corporate performance and governance.

You will find more detailed information on the function of the Practice

Educator role in the job description. How does this role link to other NHS Scotland education programmes? The role is directly connected to the Effective Practitioner programme and will be crucial for the learning and development of nurses and midwives at levels 5 and 6 of the Career Framework. There will be clear links to Flying Start NHS®, Early Clinical Career Fellowships, Senior Charge Nurse/Leading Better Care and Clinical Academic (education) Careers. The role will sit in the context of broader work streams including Modernising Nursing Careers and Midwifery 2020, as well as Healthcare Support Worker (HCSW) development. Across NHS Scotland, the Practice Educator network will complement and be complemented by a web-based resource. This will draw together, and signpost nurses and midwives to education resources including: professional development and revalidation resources; post registration career development; and a career long e-portfolio which can be used for revalidation and for e-KSF purposes. The NES Practice Educator will facilitate access to these resources and act as a catalyst for learning linked to national care priorities. What are the employment arrangements? Significant thought has been given to the employment of the postholder. The postholder will be employed by NES and become part of the NES establishment. However, in the context of the current economic climate, these posts provide an opportunity to invest at a local level in supporting the development of the nursing and midwifery workforce. This employment model will ensure that the Practice Educator post is fully integrated into existing practice education or equivalent teams within Boards, ensuring the delivery of outcomes appropriate to local, regional and national priorities. The Practice Educators will report to and receive direction, management and leadership from the existing NES Regional Practice Education Co-ordinators. The post holders will have a professional supervisory link to the Nursing and Midwifery practice education/development leads (or equivalent) within their host board. This arrangement ensures safety around employment arrangements for NES and the post holders, whilst realising the original vision for the posts to be located close to where nurses and midwives practise. There are close connections with Higher Education Institutions, Scotland’s Colleges and professional bodies to identify and signpost to relevant formal education, identify any gaps in provision and to collaborate on new provision and resources. APPLICATION PROCESS If you are interested in applying for this post please apply online and follow the onscreen instructions provided to complete your application. Demonstrating equivalency of Masters graduate education If you do not hold a post–graduate qualification, you are required to demonstrate in your application form and responses to the competency based questions that your
