Cancer Touches Us All

Cancer touches all our lives in many ways, but the dedication of a few changes the lives of many. The pursuit of finding a cure for cancer will benefit us all, some in more personal ways than others.

It is through the generous spirit of the community that HOPE (Hutchinson Oil Patch Extravaganza) has been the extraordinary success it has for the last 29 years. We ask you to join us as a HOPE 2016 Underwriter and to continue the fight against cancer.

Without the contributions of our Underwriters, this important annual community event would not be possible. Although this is an occasion that a very large portion of the community enjoys annually, let us not forget the true meaning and mission of our cause.

History of HOPE

The first Borger HOPE Gala was held in 1988 and since that time HOPE has donated more than $2.8 million to the American Cancer Society!

HOPE is the 12th largest gala in Texas and is 14th largest in the High Plains Division (which includes all galas in TX, OK, MO, KS, NE, HI & Guam) in terms of

total dollars donated to ACS. That includes 49 different gala events in the Division.

For most of our 29 year history we have led the nation in per capita dollars raised/donated to ACS. Population is counted by the county

except in large metro areas, where it is counted by the city.

This Year’s HOPE Goals

“To boost the spirits of all citizens of Hutchinson County”To Raise $150,000 for the American Cancer Society

Page 3: Cancer Touches Us All

•12 patients received free hotel rooms during their treatments

• 42 patients stayed at American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge free of charge

• 14 patient received gift items through the American Cancer Society

• 41 patients were helped getting to and from treatments through Road to Recovery

• 9 patients received patient packets

• 43 patients were served by one or more services in Hutchinson County alone

This underwriting package is used as “seed” money for the HOPE 2016 Restricted Gift. This year’s gift is to help fund American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge in Lubbock, Texas. This new lodge, the first of its kind in Texas, is a thirty two room facility offering free lodging and transportation to and from treatments for cancer patients. Hope Lodges are more than just a place to stay – patients can get support from others going through the same experience. A cancer survivor’s recovery involves much more than medical treatments; it takes hope to heal. Hope Lodge offers the warmth and security of home in a setting where the love and encouragement of others enlighten and inspire guests. HOPE 2016 is proud to designate our restricted gift funds to this worthy program.

Programs Available No Matter Where You Live• Cancer never sleeps and neither do we. Cancer Information Specialists are available 24 hours

a day, seven days a week to help answer questions about cancer and connect callers to local resources at: 1-800-ACS-2345 or www.cancer.org.

• Wigs, turbans, and head coverings are available in a variety of styles, colors and sizes.

• Transportation Assistance - trained volunteers drive cancer patients to and from their treatments.

reacH to recovery - For more than 30 years, the American Cancer Society Reach to Recovery program has helped people (female and male) cope with their breast cancer experience. This experience begins when someone is faced with the possibility of a breast cancer diagnosis and continues through the entire period that breast cancer remains a concern. A breast cancer survivor meets one-on-one with a newly diagnosed breast cancer patient to help them through the journey. Reach to Recovery volunteers offer understanding, support, and hope because they themselves have survived breast cancer and gone on to live normal, productive lives.

road to recovery - Sometimes the biggest challenge in cancer treatment is getting there. Let Road to Recovery help! Providing transportation to Cancer Treatment - free service sponsored by your American Cancer Society. Trained volunteer drivers donate their time and vehicles, no physician referral necessary.

HoPe lodge - Getting the best care sometimes means cancer patients must travel away from home. The American Cancer Society is trying to make this difficult situation easier for both cancer patients and their families through Hope Lodge. Hope Lodge provides free lodging for patients and their caregivers - it’s a place to share your meal, join in the evenings activities or unwind in your own private room. Hope Lodge Lubbock provides 32 private rooms - anyone receiving outpatient treatment at least 40 miles away from home may be eligible to stay.

tHe look good . . . Feel Better Program - This program is a community-based, free, national service that teaches female cancer patients beauty techniques to help restore their appearance and self-image during chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

guest room Program - This provides temporary housing for cancer patients who must travel for outpatient treatment and checkups. This voluntary service is limited to cities with agreements between the American Cancer Society and participating local hotels and based on their availability at the time the service is requested.

dialogue - An ongoing support group to help patients, their families and friends better understand and learn to live with cancer.

cancer survivors network - A vibrant online community where registered members can: view members’ personal web pages, e-mail other members, post to discussion boards, and have private chats. You may create your own web page, and post items in the Expression Gallery. You can also create your own personal support community using the “friends” list.

emergingmed clinical trials matcHing service - The American Cancer Society is working with EmergingMed to provide a free, confidential and reliable matching and referral service to patients looking for clinical trials. Available through the ACS website at www.cancer.org, the service can provide up-to-date contact information if one wants to ask questions about a particular clinical trial. The EmergingMed database contains more than 3,000 clinical trials for treatment, prevention, and early detection of cancer.
