CANCER• Second leading cause of death

World Wide after Cardiovascular diseases.

• Incidence will increase up to 500% by 2025.

• 40% of Cancer related deaths are due to Tobacco alone.

• Cancer is curable if detected early.• 80% of the patients reach the

doctors in incurable stages.

Our body is made up of cells (CELLS ARE THE FUNDAMENTAL

UNIT OF LIFE) but any kind of uncontrolled unregulated

abnormal growth of cells that forms the tumor could be cancer.

(cells are the fundamental unit of life)

ALARMING FACTS ABOUT CANCER

Cancer cells may multiply at abnormally fast rates and spread uncontrolled through the tissues.

Cancer can be triggered by over exposure of the carcinogens, to x-ray,radioactivity and ultra violet radiations.

Cancer means can survive if detected eariy.

In india 80% of cancer patients dignosed in terminal stage when there is no treatment possible and we loss precious human life.

If damaged cells survive so that defective genes are passed on the new genertions of cells.

WHO has estimated that more than 10 million new cancer cases are diagnosed each year, out of which 1/3rd can be prevented and another 1/3rd can be cured through early detection and treatment.

W H O SAYS THERE ARE FOUR PREVENTABLE CAUSES OF CANCER:

RISK FACTORS OF CANCER

TOBACCO Alarming facts

about Tobacco Abuse-

Every 8 seconds one-person dies of tobacco related disease, 2200 people dies everyday.1.3 billion Tobacco users worldwide. 84% in developing countries

• By 2025, Tobacco use will kill 10 million people each year.

• Tobacco consumption has declined in western countries whereas is on increase in developing countries like India, China, Indonesia etc.

• Tobacco is the single consumer product, which kills 50% of its regular users by way of cigarette, pan-masala, gutkha, bidi, chewable tobacco etc.

IN INDIA:• 250 million tobacco users in India (25%).• 8-9 lakh people die of tobacco use every

year.• 36% are chewing tobacco.• 56% tobacco users smoke bidi. Tobacco is

smoked as bidi, cigarette, cigars, hookah, clay pipes etc.

• Most people start smoking around the age of 15 years.

• Cigarette smoke contains 4000 chemicals. 60 of which include arsenic, methanol that are known or suspected carcinogenic. With 1 puff of bidi, one inhales 350 toxins. The bidi is twice as harmful as cigarette. The smoke of tobacco contains poisonous gases like carbon monoxide, benzpyrine etc.

• Tobacco is used for teeth as Masheri or tobacco toothpaste.

• Tobacco is used as sniff or in pan-masala with betel nut and lime.

• Tobacco intake in all forms is harmful and causes an increased incidence of tobacco related cancers and many other diseases of heart, kidney, liver etc.

• There is no safe cigarette- filtered, menthol, imported, low nicotine are also harmful.

• The incidence of cancer does not depend on quantity of tobacco consumed. A susceptible individual who smokes just a few cigarettes or eats a few pans with tobacco a day may also cause cancer.

BALANCE DIET

• Diet plays an important role in not only prevention of cancer of many other non-communicable diseases. Eating 5 or more serving of fruits or vegetables a day may reduce the risk of cancer by 20%. While 3 servings of whole grains daily, could cut cancer risk by 30%. Our fight against cancer starts from kitchen. Our dining table is the battlefield and diet is the armament. Thus, our diet should include daily intake of green leafy vegetables like lauki, turai, parwal, tinda, palak, soya, methi etc.

• We should ensure intake of dark colored vegetables like tomato, carrot etc.

TOMATOTomato is a rich source of Lycopene. A study in U.S.A. has revealed that 10 servings of tomato a week reduce 1/3rd of prostate cancer risk. Cooked tomatoes are always better than raw tomatoes.

SOYA PRODUCTSSoya milk/tofu and other soya-based products are rich source of Isoflavones. East Asians, who eat a large quantity of soya products have lower incidence of Prostate Cancer.

CARROTCarrot is a rich source of Carotenoids, which is also found in papaya, mango, oranges and sweet potatoes. Studies on 15000 women found a link between high intake of food rich in carotenoids and reduced risks of cervical cancer.

TURMERICCur cumin found in Turmeric, the yellow part of curry spice mixes. Colon Cancer (large intestine) is much less common in India than elsewhere. The high intake of cur cumin is thought to explain this. Studies suggest that it suppresses development of colon cancer cells in human. U.K. based study showed lower incidence of colon cancer in Leicester where 20% population is of Asian origin, who uses turmeric in curries etc.

FRUITS & VEGETABLESSprouted Grains are not only rich in Vitamin B-Complex, but also provides a lot of fiber that helps to regulate bowel movement.Fruits like papaya, guava, mango, watermelon, orange, amla etc. are rich in vitamins and anti-oxidants. The nature is generous enough to provide fresh fruits in every season. Seasonal fruits are available in abundance and at an affordable cost.

BREAKFASTCharge your batteries early in

the morning. Go for a healthy breakfast.

A good breakfast provides the right

nutrients as it kick-starts the brain into

action and keeps you energetic

through the day.

IMPORTANCE OF BREAKFAST

· It keeps the mind and body strong and healthy.

· Boosts energy, increases attention span and heightens the sense of well-being.

· It increases concentration, reduces fatigue and sleepiness in the mid morning hours.

· It helps in maintaining a healthy body weight.

Eating a healthy breakfast has been linked to better learning ability and memory functions.Research shows that children who skip breakfast are more likely to be anemic, less energetic and have difficulties concentrating in the morning

Energy giving food group (cereals or rice)

·  Body building group (egg, milk or nuts)

·  Protective food group (fruits or vegetables)

AN IDEAL BREAKFAST

Something as simple as cornflakes with milk and fruits will give you the best of all the three essential groups.Besides this cut down the intake of fried food because acrylamide is found in baked, fried and grilled food such as chips, bread, biscuit etc. prolonged intake of acrylamide is injurious to our health. (Swedish study)

*A Swedish study suggest that acrylamide

is formed when carbohydrate rich food

e.g. potato, rice, cereals are deep fried or baked

but was not formed when they were boiled.

Physical Activity is any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles. Such movements result in an expenditure of energy. National Cancer Institute reported that incidence of some cancers like breast, prostate, lung, colon and lining of uterus can be reduced by engaging in regular exercise.

LACK OF EXERCISEHOW MUCH

EXERCISE DO ADULTS NEED? The center of disease control & prevention recommends that adults should engage in moderate intensity physical activity of at least 30 minutes for 5 days a week or must engage in vigorous intensity physical activity for at least 30 minutes thrice a week.

PHYSICAL EXERCISE AND HEALTH

· Maintaining healthy bones, muscles and joints.

· Maintaining healthy body weight.

· Reducing the risk of developing diabetes and high B/P.

· Reducing the risk of certain types of cancers.

· Promoting psychological well-being.

· Preventing mental fatigue.

· Improving immune response.

OBESITY CAUSESGood healthy diet and

regular physical exercise will reduce chances of obesity. In a study, obesity accounts for 3% of all male and 6% of all female cancers. According to Cancer Research Society, U.S. obesity increases the risk of Breast, Endomelrium (lining of Uterus), Kidney, Esophagus and Colon Cancer. A recent report had estimated that in U.S.A. 14% deaths in men and 20% deaths in women were due to obesity.

SMOKING KILLS VIDEO

ACTIVE SMOKINGTYPES OF SMOKING

PASSIVE SMOKING

PASSIVE SMOKING 2/3rd of smoke from burning

cigarette does not reach the smoker’s lungs but instead goes directly into the air. The effects of this smoke are similar to tobacco smoke inhaled by active smokers. Inhaling of air containing tobacco smoke is called Passive Smoking. The Passive Smoking not only leads to increased risk of cancer but also leads to-

Increased incidence of heart disease.

Children whose parents smoke are exposed to increased risk of cough, bronchitis, ear infection and pneumonia.

Children exposed to their parents smoke are 6 times more prone to respiratory diseases.

BAD EFFECTS If a pregnant woman smokes or

chew tobacco will have an adverse effect on fetus.

Tobacco in pan-masala not only causes Oral Cancer but studies have revealed that it causes cancer of kidney, ovary, liver, testis etc.

Thanks to pan-masala, chewing of tobacco and smoking cigarette/bidi, India has the distinction of the highest number of oral cancers worldwide.
