Without the patient co-operation of the contributing registries, the Editors of this Monograph would have had no material to edit. The Editors hope that scientists will give due recognition to this fact and use the following style of reference when quoting the data from a given registry:
NORTH, A.B., and SOUTH, C.D. Cancer Incidence in Antarctica 1960-1966. In UICC: Cancer Incidence in Five Continents, Volume II. Eds. DOLL, R., MUIR. C.S •• and WATERHOUSE, J.A.H., Geneva, UICC, 1970.

PREFACE
In 1966, following the Ninth International Cancer Congress in Tokyo, the Commission on Epidemiology and Prevention of the International Union against Cancer formed a new Committee on Cancer Incidence. This Committee met in Lausanne in May 1968 and decided that the monograph on Cancer Incidence in Five Continents, which had been published by the UICC tw~ years previously, had been so useful that a second volume should be published as soon as a sufficient amount of new material could be collected. The Committee delegated the responsibility for the production of this volume to the Editors of the original monograph and to the Honorary Secretary of the Committee, Dr C.S. Muir. Mr P. Payne, however, was unable to continue in this capacity because of the pressure of other commitments.
The Editors have 1eant heavily on the skills and knowledge of Dr A.J. Tuyns and Dr H. Tu1inius, who have been responsible for the preparation of Chapters II and IV respectively and for the collection of a large part of the material presented in them. They are also greatly indebted to Miss J~ Powell of the Birmingham Cancer Registry, who wrote the computer programme for calculating the age-specific and standardized incidence rates, in conjunction with Dr J.A.H. Waterhouse, and supervised the operation of the computer, as well as to Mme J. Nectoux of the International Agency for Research on Cancer who was responsible for verification of data, the preparation of the appendix tables and the notes etc.
The production of this second volume marks an interesting new experiment in international collaboration. Not only have the data been contributed by cancer registries in 24 countries throughout the world, but the editorial work has been shared by two international organizations, the International Union against Cancer (UICC) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) at Lyon. The smoothness and the speed with which the arrangements have been carried through augurs well for the success of similar collajoration in the future.
Finally, it is our sad duty to report the death of two investigators who contributed to our first volume. Dr Henry Eisenberg, Dir~ctor of the Connecticut Tumor Registry, became a member of the UICC Committee on Cancer Incidence and, though already ill, participated in the discussions at the Lausanne meeting by correspondence. A pioneer of cancer registration, Dr Eisenberg's enthusiasm and knowledge will be sadly missed. Dr George Oettle, Director of the Cancer Research Unit of the South African Institute for Medical Research, was well known for his demonstration, in conjunction with Dr John Higginson, that it was possible to obtain accurate cancer incidence figures for populations which lacked accurate mortality data. He inspired the collection of the new data for South African populations that are recorded here.
