The Canadiens and the Philadelphia Flyers meet tonight in Game 3 of the Round 1 of the NHL Playoffs. The Flyers defeated the Canadiens 2-1 in Game

1, last Wednesday. The team that wins Game 1 of a Best-of-Seven series went on to win the series 478 of 697 times (68.6% efficiency - according to

NHL Morning Skate).

The Canadiens responded by shutting out the Flyers 5-0 to tie the series. It was Kirk Muller's first game as interim head coach and his players dedicated

their efforts to him and Claude Julien, who returned home to rest after the installation of a stent in a coronary artery. Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored two

goals in the win, as did Tomas Tatar, and Max Domi had 3 points in a playoff game for the first time in his career (0-3-3).

Kirk Muller replaces Claude Julien, assuming the duties of head coach during Claude’s entire absence. This is the second time in Kirk's career that he

will serve as an NHL head coach, after his previous experience with the Carolina Hurricanes from 2011-12 to 2013-14. In 187 games behind the

Hurricanes bench, Kirk has maintained an 80-80-27 record. The former Habs captain also served as an assistant coach in Montreal (2006-2011) and St.

Louis (2014-2016) before returning with the Canadiens in an associate coach role.

AROUND THE RINK

The Flyers are 23-9 in best-of-seven series in which they’ve won the first game, but are 8-24 in series in which they’ve lost the second game.

The Flyers have not been shut out in consecutive playoff games since the 2002 playoffs, when they did not score in Games 2, 3 or 4 of the Eastern

Conference Quarterfinal vs. Ottawa.

Game 2 was the 27th time the Flyers have been shut out in the playoffs. The Flyers are 9-12 in games following a playoff game where they were shut

out. The other five occasions in which the Flyers were shut out were series-ending games.

The Flyers went the last 27 games of the regular season without losing consecutive games. Their last such stretch was a stretch of 0-3-1 from Dec. 31 –

Jan. 7 that wrapped up their annual holiday season road trip.

The Flyers were shut out three times in the regular season, the first of which didn’t come until January 11 vs. Tampa Bay.  They were also shut out by

New Jersey on Feb. 6 and did not score in the final game of the season, March 10 vs. Boston. Those were three of just six regulation losses the Flyers

had between Jan. 11 and the end of the season, a stretch where they went 18-6-1. On the first two occasions, the Flyers followed up the losses with a 6-

5 shootout win vs. BOS on Jan. 13 and a 7-2 win at WSH on Feb. 8.

CONNECTIONS

Flyers head coach Alain Vigneault and assistant coach Michel Therrien are both former Canadiens head coaches.

Vigneault led the team from 1997-2000 and was the second-youngest head coach in franchise history when he was hired at age 36. He received his first

nomination for the Jack Adams Award following the 1999-2000 season.

Therrien has coached the Canadiens on two occasions. He replaced Vigneault in 2000 and led the team until midway through the 2002-03 season. He

was re-hired in 2012 and spent just under five seasons there until midway through the 2016-17 season.  Therrien ranks fourth all-time in Canadiens

history in games coached (352) and in wins (194).

Nate Thompson was acquired from the Canadiens in a deadline-day trade in February. Thompson appeared in 63 games for the Habs this year, picking

up four goals and 10 assists. He was acquired by Montreal in 2019, also in a deadline deal, and totaled five goals and 16 assists in 88 games with the

club.

Dale Weise appeared in 152 games for the Flyers over parts of three seasons from 2016-2019, scoring 17 goals and adding 17 assists. He was traded

to Montreal on February 9, 2019.

Page 35: Canadiens de Montréal Notes de presse, séries/Playoff Game ...€¦ · Hymnes nationaux/Ntl. Anthem * Denotes Standby Official. Dans la LNH / Today's Schedule DAL @ CGY : 12:00

Jordan Weal appeared in 124 games for the Flyers over parts of four seasons from January 2016 through January 2019. He scored 19 goals and added

23 assists during that time.

Cayden Primeau is the son of former Flyers captain Keith Primeau, who played 312 games for the team from 1999-2006. Cayden Primeau was

selected with a seventh-round pick acquired from the Flyers at the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

Max Domi previously wore #16 in Arizona in tribute to Bobby Clarke.  Both are Type 1 diabetics, and Domi has said he drew inspiration from Clarke in

pursuing his career.

ROUND ROBIN RECAP

GAME RESULTS

Sunday, August 2, 2020 – Flyers 4, Boston 1

Thursday, August 6, 2020 – Flyers 3, Washington 1

Saturday, August 8, 2020 – Flyers 4, Tampa Bay 1

NOTABLES

The Flyers outscored opponents 11-3, allowing one goal in each game. They led the league during the Qualifiers in goals-allowed average (1.00) and

the 26.7 shots they allowed per game were fourth-fewest. Their 90-percent penalty kill rate was sixth-best.

The Flyers averaged 3.67 goals per game, which was tied for the fifth-highest average in the league. They did so on just 26.7 shots per game, the

fourth-lowest. They scored all 11 of their goals at even strength, including one empty-netter.

The Flyers won 56.8 percent of their faceoffs, third-best in the Qualifiers. The Flyers led the NHL in faceoff percentage this season at 54.6 pct, marking

the second consecutive year they’ve led the league in the category.

Scott Laughton led the Flyers with three goals and two assists for five points, placing him among the top 20 in the league in scoring. He had at least a

point in all three games. Laughton had just one playoff point in his career prior to this season, a goal vs. Pittsburgh in 2018.

Phil Myers was one of four players to lead the league in plus-minus with a plus-6 rating. (The other three were all from MTL – Paul Byron, Ben Chiarot

and Artturi Lehkonen.) Myers’s defensive partner Travis Sanheim was a plus-5.

Kevin Hayes had four assists, three of which came vs. Washington.  Hayes is one of several first-year Flyers who brings extensive playoff experience to

the roster, having appeared in 34 career games with the NY Rangers (all under Alain Vigneault) and six with the Winnipeg Jets. Hayes was part of the

Rangers’ run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2014.

Ivan Provorov averaged 25:09 of ice time, which is 12th in the league. He ranked eighth in the league over the course of the regular season with an

average of 24:51.

Shayne Gostisbehere had two assists in the game vs. Tampa Bay, his only action of the Round Robin. Gostisbehere was limited to 42 games this

season due to January knee surgery; he appeared in two NHL games after that, including the Flyers’ final game of the year vs. Boston, and also did a

conditioning assignment with AHL Lehigh Valley. Gostisbehere appeared in each of the Flyers’ previous two playoff series in 2016 and 2018,

contributing two goals and an assist.
