So what does it mean to be a Canadian in the 21st century?

• There are multiple aspects to being a responsible citizen of Canada such as…

the responsibility to help others in needthe responsibility to represent Canada at all

times, especially while abroadthe responsibility to learn about our historythe responsibility to love hockey (just kidding!)

Responsibility to Others

As a responsible citizen, we must help others in need. There are several different ways to do that.• Through welfare programs

and taxes• Through volunteer work• Through donations to

charities• Through sustainable

development for others in unstable positions

“The truth is—the pathetically, stupidly, inconveniently, obvious truth is, helping only ourselves is bad and helping each other is good…You just stop thinking about what’s good for you and start thinking about what’s good for someone else. And you can change the whole game with one move.”- Jeff Winger, Community S3E22

Responsibility to Represent Canada while abroad

As citizens, when we travel we represent our country and the people in it so it’s very important to act responsibly. That includes being respectful of other cultures and religions, adhering to their sensibilities and not being a disruptive force. Canada has historically always had such a good reputation abroad, it’s our responsibility to uphold it.

Canadians (and some Americans) often wear the Canadian flag on their bags when travelling abroad because the flag is well recognized and gets received positively.

Continued…

It’s important that we, the citizens of a free and democratic country, learn about our history and appreciate the sacrifices that our forefathers made to keep Canada as it is. From our separation from Britain to our major contributions in the World Wars, Canada’s history is filled with great and heroic people that should be remembered and celebrated.

To Summarize & Conclude…

• Being a responsible Canadian citizen is just that: being responsible in all aspects of our culture (such as learning our history and respecting/contributing to our welfare system and helping others)

• It’s important to also remember that Canada is all of us. We are Canada, and it’s our choice on how we want to represent it. As we grow up, the torch is passed to us, and I, for one, am excited about showing the world who Canadians will be in the 21st century.
