Happy New Year!

A new year means a new CSHP BC Branch Council. We are pleased to have some familiar faces

return to council but it is also great to see some first time council members joining us. I would like to

welcome the members of the 2015 CSHP BC Branch Council who are as follows:

I would also like to thank those who have just completed terms. We appreciate your excellent work. None of the work CSHP

BC does would be possible without the efforts of volunteers like you.

I am looking forward to working with Branch Council in the year ahead

to advance the cause of hospital pharmacy in BC. We plan to continue

the strong advocacy work that has been the hallmark of recent years'

Branch Council activities.

Pharmacy Awareness Month in March represents an excellent oppor-

tunity to raise awareness and advocate for our profession. This year

CSHP BC Branch will again spearhead initiatives to educate the public,

elected officials and other health disciplines about pharmacists' role

and our value to the health care system. We will have an active social

media presence, and will again run a hospital pharmacy themed

Twitter campaign. We hope to coordinate with other branches across

Canada so that we can stimulate a cross-country conversation. Please follow us on Twitter and Facebook and join the conver-

sation. We encourage you to begin planning for Pharmacy Awareness Month events at your site. CSHP BC will make shared

PAM resources available via the website and we encourage you share and novel or fun ideas you may have with others. Let’s

make this Pharmacy Awareness Month one to remember!

“In addition to our

regular events we are

excited to provide a

new offering this year:

Clinical News Briefs.”

Message from the President Your BC Branch is planning another year of excellent continuing

education content. In addition to our regular events we are

excited to provide a new offering this year: Clinical News Briefs.

The first of these was posted on the branch website in December.

These News Briefs will feature a brief update and analysis by a

local clinical expert on breaking news or a practice-changing trial

in the medical literature. Posting our continuing education content

on the website is part of CSHP BC’s commitment to making our

educational content more accessible to members across BC.

CSHP is an excellent organization and I am proud to be part of it.

Its strength is in its membership and in the willingness of members

to get involved. I encourage you all to find a way to participate.

Attend a CE event, participate in Pharmacy Awareness month, be

a mentor, join a committee. Perhaps even consider joining council

in the fall.

I look forward to seeing you at CSHP events over the coming year. If you have questions or

ideas I’d love to hear them. Please do not hesitate to contact me.

The entry in 2015 also marks my transition in the CSHP National Advocacy Committee BC Chair.

I would like to thank and congratulate Mits Miyata, the outgoing chair, for his passion, consideration and dedication to this role over the past four years. He has enabled many changes and advances in our profession. With the help of pharmacy teams throughout BC, he managed to put in the limelight the value pharmacists bring to our healthcare system, and advocate for enabling them to leverage their skills and knowledge in order to improve patient care.

Thank you Mits Miyata!

Keeping this momentum going is my overarching goal moving forward. Over the next two years, I hope to propel the initiatives started forward. I hope the awareness created through the CSHP informational videos and campaigns will continue to flourish, and future activities will enrich their success. Another one of my goals is to take advantage of the communication channels with the Ministry of Health and take part in creating solutions to maximize the impact of pharmacists in our healthcare system. Also, personally, I hope to move our profession forward and advance the work on collaborative prescribing, which has great potential to bring numerous benefits to patients and our healthcare system.

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that Pharmacy Awareness Month (PAM) is just around the corner. We are just six weeks away from PAM, taking place in March 2015. The awareness campaign for 2014 was extremely successful, with strong participation throughout the LMPS. I hope the 2015 PAM will be even more successful and better received!

Remember: Awareness resources can be found on our website under Awareness, or just following this link: http://www.cshp-bc.com/templates/pharm_awareness.html

I look forward to my time in this role and it is with great pride I will try to magnify the voice of pharmacists in BC. If you have any suggestions or questions please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

Happy 2015, everyone! I hope the New Year will bring you and your families good health, happiness,

success and prosperity. It is amazing how quickly the years go by, but with every passing year we have

the opportunity to learn more and continue to make a positive difference.

I am honoured to represent you and the BC Branch on CSHP’s National Board and will be attending the

Mid-term Board Meetings in early March. This is a great opportunity to collaborate with Board members

from across the country and CSHP executives and staff to brainstorm about the best ways to deliver on

matters of importance to our members. One of the items that we are in the process of reviewing and

formalizing is CSHP’s new strategic plan for 2015-2018, which the BC Branch had the opportunity to

contribute towards during the strategic planning session at SES 2014. In addition, your feedback from

the membership survey in Spring 2014, observations from environmental scans, follow ups from focus

groups and additional reviews by the CSHP executive team and staff have been very helpful in shaping

the new strategic plan. Your feedback is as always highly valued, so I would encourage you to please

let me know how best CSHP can represent you.

On another note, I would like to invite you to take advantage of CSHP Foundation’s Pharmacy Leadership Academy Scholarship to further develop your leadership skills. This is a fantastic CSHP member benefit that will enable you to optimize your leader-ship skills, regardless of the type of position that you are in. It is a 12 month distance learning program that starts in July 2015, and will cover a number of modules on leadership, financial management, transformational change and innovation, patient safety and quality, technology advancement and system design, and organizational success. For more information, please refer to the CSHP Foundation website, and let me know if you have any questions. Please note the application deadlines are coming up on February 13th, 2015 and March 27th, 2015.

With best wishes,

CSHP Student Mentorship Program

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone taking part in the CSHP

Mentorship Program. The Mentorship Program pairs pharmacy students with a practicing hospital pharmacist mentor.

Through this pairing, students are given the opportunity to shadow their mentor and gain a better understanding of the role

of the hospital pharmacist. The shadowing sessions can provide a general overview of hospital pharmacy practice, or a

more detailed look at the mentor’s daily activities in a specialized setting. Many students report that the mentorship program

was instrumental in their decision to pursue a career in hospital pharmacy. Your willingness to help teach keen students and

show them what clinical pharmacy entails is always appreciated!

We are always looking for more mentors to participate in the program, as the number of students wishing to participate is

greater than the number of available mentors. We welcome pharmacists who are involved in distribution services, clinical

services, specialized clinical practice, administration, and any other facet of hospital pharmacy to sign-up to be a mentor.

The program is extremely flexible and can be tailored by the mentor and/or mentee to fit even the busiest of schedules.

If you are interested in participating as a mentor, or would like to learn more, please visit

http://www.cshp-bc.com/mentorship/mentorship.html. or email us at [email protected].

Your willingness to help teach keen students and show them what clinical pharmacy entails is always appreciated.

Winter is an invariably busy time of year for pharmacy students at UBC with assignments due and final exams looming. In

spite of the chaos, we are pleased to report that the annual CAPSI-CSHP Clinical Symposium held on November 19th was a

great success with about 80 students in attendance. The theme of this year’s symposium was Young Leaders in Pharmacy

and we were pleased to welcome the highly accomplished Dr. Hilary Rowe, Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Maternal Fetal

Medicine at Surrey Memorial Hospital, and Larry Leung of the UBC Pharmacists Clinic, as our guest speakers. Dr. Rowe and

Mr. Leung spoke about how their journey through the world of pharmacy had brought them to their present positions and

shared some of their personal experiences and tips for success. Students in attendance gained insight into the importance of

being creative and innovative in their future practice and how to inspire change in our rapidly advancing profession.

With the start of a new semester and the New Year we are looking forward to continuing

to advocate for the CSHP. We will be helping to support Pharmacy Awareness Month at

UBC by hosting another clinical symposium in March as well as educating students about

hospital pharmacy and advocating for the profession at the week-long UBC Pharmacy

Awareness Month Health Fair.

Kind Regards,

Awards Announcement 2. Pharmacy Awareness Week (PAW) Award Winner 2013:

The most impressive Pharmacy Awareness Month 2014 campaign was tied between BC Cancer Agency – Vancouver Centre

and Royal Columbian Hospital. This year’s winners not only spread pharmacy awareness within their sites with the use of

booths, games and presentations but they also went above and beyond to reach out externally with tireless tweeting and the BC

Cancer Agency’s President paying a tribute to the Pharmacy Team (BC Cancer Agency – Vancouver Centre) or conducting Phar-

macy tours and producing a fun video on ‘Why does it take so long for medications to come up from Pharmacy?’ (Royal Colum-

bian Hospital).

With support from the CSHP BC branch, we had a total of 7 submissions, including the BC Cancer Agency (Vancouver), BC Chil-

dren’s & Women’s, Langley Memorial Hospital, Lions Gate Hospital, Peace Arch Hospital, Royal Columbian Hospital and Royal

Jubilee Hospital. Each pharmacy department ran an impressive campaign on promoting the role of pharmacists and technicians

to other healthcare professionals and the public.

College Offers Collaborative Practice CE Program The College of Pharmacists of BC recognizes the importance of integration within the pharmacy and across the health care team.

This is why the College partnered with the UBC College of Health Disciplines to deliver a continuing education program for

pharmacists and pharmacy technicians that promotes interdisciplinary relationships.

Participants will learn through self-directed online modules, which outline the key steps for successful collaborative practice. The

modules include:

1) Interprofessional Communication 4) Team Functioning

2) Patient/Client/Family/Community-Centred Care 5) Interprofessional Conflict Management

3) Role Clarification 6) Collaborative Leadership

Participants who complete the online modules are eligible to attend a regional in-person workshop to put their

new knowledge, skills and abilities into practice. The regional workshops will take place on February 10, 12,

17, and 19. Find out more about the program on the College website and register today!

In recent years there has been growing interest in using insulin pen devices for subcutaneous insulin administration in hospitals. Although risks exist, transitioning to insulin pens correctly can have a number of benefits related to safety, nurse and patient satisfaction, cost, wastage and transitions of care support.

The purpose of this webinar is to describe experiences from pen implementation projects, including the benefits and risks identified. When planning to implement pens a number of factors need to be considered, including staff education and dispensing processes which are crucial aspects in circumventing risk.

In this session, challenges and opportunities will be discussed and tools that have been created shared, in hopes that these will facilitate discussion within your own institution

Target audience: hospital pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacy leaders.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. To summarize benefits and risks of insulin pen use in a hospital setting 2. To utilize available tools and practical tips that can assist in insulin pen conversions 3. To recognize outcome measures that may be attained from insulin pen conversions

CSHP would like to thank Pfizer Canada Inc. for their unrestricted financial support of the CSHP 2015 initiative which has made webinars for CSHP members possible

If you have a CSHP 2015 success story you’d like to share as a webinar please contact: [email protected].
