I am pleased to extend my warmest greetings to everyone taking part in the Pinnacle 48th Canadian Open Chess Championship 2011, organized by the Chess Institute of Canada.      This annual event gathers players from across the country to compete for national honours. Chess is a serious game with universal appeal. It has been played for centuries by great thinkers, who find endless fascination in the game’s complexity and beauty. Although Canadians of all ages enjoy playing chess recreationally, few are able to attain the level of mastery that you have. I trust that you will meet your fellow competitors as friends, in a spirit of fair play, and with respect for the gameʹs traditions.      Please accept my best wishes for a successful tournament.

The Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper, P.C., M.P.

Mr. Ted Winick President Chess Institute of Canada Participants of the 2011 Canadian Open: As chess advocate of Toronto City Council, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to Toronto for the 48th Canadian Open Chess Championship. Thank you to the members of the Greater Toronto Chess League, the Chess Institute of Canada, the Chess Federation of Canada, and the Ontario Chess Association for organizing this event in Toronto. Toronto is one of the most multi-cultural cities in the world and is therefore one of the best cities in the world for chess. People from 170 different countries make their home here and speak over 140 languages. To fully understand how cosmopolitan our city is, one only needs to watch the parade of flags displayed on thousands of cars throughout a world cup week. Admired for its ethnic and cultural diversity, you are promised a warm and welcoming reception. I am proud to be the chess advocate for Toronto City Council. As an advocate, I understand that Children are the future of chess. To foster our players, Toronto has a large and growing free chess program in our libraries thanks to Yuang Ling Yuan and in our community centres thanks to Ted Winick and the Chess Institute of Canada. Our school programs are growing exponentially due to the hard work of organizations such as the Chess Institute. We are truly excited about the future of chess in Toronto. I would like to express my appreciation for the incredible volunteer effort put on by the organizing committee of this tournament and in closing I wish each and every one of you good luck in the coming week. As they say at every prestigious competition, "let the games begin!" Sincerely,

Councillor Joe Mihevc Ward 21, St. Paul’s West

Page 7: Canadian Open Souvenir Book - Canadian Chess - … · 11:00 GM Eugene Perelshteyn lecture on his books Chess Openings for White/Black Explained ... 48th Canadian Open Chess Championship

Dear chess players, As Chair of the Organizing Committee, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Pinnacle 48th Canadian Open Chess Championship 2011. Much hard work has gone into making this year’s event a great experience for you. At the writing of this letter, we have 12 International Grandmasters who, besides playing in the tournament, are offering many side events including Lectures and Simultaneous Exhibitions for your additional chess pleasure. I accepted the challenge of making this tournament happen for the second year in a row at Toronto’s Westin Harbour Castle Hotel. My reason for this is no secret to people who know me. I am first and foremost an advocate of children’s chess and the many benefits chess offers those who learn the game and develop the required skills.

To many of us chess is not just a game; it is an attitude towards life. CIC’s instructors use chess as a metaphor for life, teaching life skills to thousands of children. It has been said that chess is the best game to teach sequential thinking. The motto of Chess Institute of Canada is: “Chess and life … your words and actions have consequences!” Teaching chess is our way of making a positive difference in the world. We enable children to see they have the power to make good choices to change and improve the world. One question I hear constantly from chess clubs is how to increase membership, particularly among youth. The future of chess depends on children learning the game, then staying with it as they become adults. I challenge each of you to find a little time in your lives to volunteer at a local community centre or school, perhaps one that cannot afford a chess program, and give back a little of what this magnificent game gave to you. I will finish by wishing everyone good luck over the next week. Renew friendships and make new ones. We share the love of one of the oldest and most intriguing games in the world, one that fascinates our minds as it captivates our hearts. Yes, the game is about winning and losing. However, as I stress to all my students, chess is mostly about learning. Either you win or you learn; those are the only possible outcomes in a chess game. After their games, they either tell me they won or they tell me what they learned. I hope all of you will do the same. Sincerely, Ted Ted Winick President Chess Institute of Canada

Canadian Chess Hall of Fame POVILAS JONAS VAITONIS

1911-1983

Povilas (Paul) Vaitonis was born on August 15, 1911 in Lithuania, in the small village of Uzpaliai to Jonas and Ona Vaitonis. His father, a well educated farmer, taught Povilas to play chess at the age of 5. In his early school years, Povilas often participated in weekend chess tournaments, where he not only developed his chess skills and knowledge, but also his intense competitive drive and his instincts for the game. He began to distinguish himself in chess on a national level when he entered the University of Kaunas in 1930 to pursue a Bachelor's Degree in Humanities and Classical Literature. In 1931, at 19 years of age, he won the University Chess Championship, and in the following year he took the City of Kaunas title. After completing his undergraduate degree, Povilas immediately began law studies at the University of Vilnius in 1934, which he completed in 1940, with a 2 years interruption for compulsory military service. While a law student, he won his first Lithuanian Chess Championship in 1934 at the young age of 23. He held the Lithuanian Chess title again in 1937 and 1938, while he shared the National Title in 1942 and 1944. Povilas also competed as a member of the Lithuanian team at the Olympiads in Folkestone in 1933, Warsaw in 1935, Munich (unofficial) in 1936, Stockholm in 1937 and Buenos Aires in 1939. While chess was his primary and life-long passion, Povilas was also active in a wide range of sports and excelled in several, including basketball, soccer, tennis, badminton and pole vaulting. He played goalie for Lithuania’s national soccer team and was Lithuania’s pole vaulting champion three times. Povilas represented Lithuania in the Baltic Olympic Games several times in both of these sports. From 1940 to 1944, Povilas worked in the capital city of Vilnius as a Manager at the City’s Electric Power Station. In September, 1944, he fled the country as the Russian army began its attack on the occupying German armed forces. In the chaos, Povilas made his way to the Baltic coast by horse-drawn cart and then by bicycle, hoping to find passage across the Baltic Sea to Sweden. Arriving at the shore after a harrowing journey of several days, Povilas luckily sighted a small fishing vessel carrying refugees that had already set out to sea. Determined to reach that boat, he appropriated an abandoned, but leaky, row boat which he used to chase down the departing vessel. When his row boat sank, he swam the rest of the way, literally, amid a hail of Russian bullets. The crew pulled him onto the boat, soaked to the skin and without any material possessions. He left behind his parents who refused to leave the country. His only sister had already left and eventually settled in Argentina. He never saw his parents or his homeland again. He said that if he returned, he was sure to be arrested by the Soviet authorities because of a very heated public argument he had with a Russian officer during the earlier Russian occupation, in 1939. It was on this fishing boat that he first met his future wife, Magdalena Martinkus, who was also escaping with her parents. They began their courtship on that boat and were married in Sweden. His Swedish chess contacts helped him and Magdalena find jobs and an apartment. Initially, they had intended to make Sweden their home until they could return to a liberated Lithuania after the war, but when that hope faded, Povilas and Magdalena decided to immigrate to Canada with their young daughter and Magdalena’s parents in search of a better life. After the family’s arrival in Canada in January of 1949, Povilas worked for a year as a farm labourer before settling in Hamilton, Ontario where he found a survival factory job. After a short time, he was transferred to an office job when management learned that he spoke excellent English as well as 4 other languages. He studied to become a Cost Accountant and held this position for 21 years at the

Page 11: Canadian Open Souvenir Book - Canadian Chess - … · 11:00 GM Eugene Perelshteyn lecture on his books Chess Openings for White/Black Explained ... 48th Canadian Open Chess Championship

Bell Thread Company in Hamilton. In 1973, after 8 years of part-time evening studies, he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Political Science from McMaster University. The last position he held before his retirement at the age of 70 was as the Manager of Talka, the Lithuanian Credit Union for Hamilton and the surrounding area. He and Magdalena had 6 children in all, 5 girls and 1 boy. Povilas placed a high value on education, and was proud of the fact that all 6 of his children achieved university degrees, with some having completed masters degrees as well. He taught the game of chess to all his children and extolled that “…one of the educational values of chess is the acquired habit of thought, valuable for all aspects of life, to be aware of all possible eventualities.” He wasted no time in resuming his chess career in Canada and rapidly rose to join the top rank of players. In 1950, Povilas won the Ontario Speed Championship and the Ontario Open Championship. Over the next decade, he went on to win the Ontario Open 4 more times. In 1951, in Vancouver, he won his first Canadian Chess Championship. He captured the title a second time in 1957, again in Vancouver. He twice participated as a Canadian team member at the Olympiads, in Amsterdam in 1954 and Munich in 1958. In all of his Olympiads he distinguished himself and the teams he represented as a world class chess player and competitor. Povilas devoted considerable energy to the promotion of chess. He gave many simultaneous exhibitions in Canada and the United States, including an exhibition at Harvard University in 1958. One of the earliest exhibitions he gave was at the University of Toronto in 1950. He wrote a chess column for the Hamilton Spectator newspaper for almost 4 years until 1955, where he covered local, national and international chess news with insightful analysis and thoughtful commentary, and at the same time, expressed his delight in and passion for the game. He was an active member of the Hamilton Chess Club and gave generously of his expertise to support and encourage the growth of chess. Povilas always remained modest about his abilities and achievements. After his second Canadian Championship victory, he attributed his win to “Lady Luck” and was quoted as saying, “I don’t really play chess – that’s why I make so many mistakes.” He always maintained that his major drawback to a higher level of success was his lack of knowledge of chess theory, but felt that having played the game for so many hours in his childhood, he had acquired a natural sense for this complicated game. He had no real love of tournament play, but said that he much preferred to have a good game with a friend. In his tournament play, he gained a reputation as a gentleman for his friendly manners and sportsmanship. He had a deeply ironic and subtle sense of humour, but complained that people rarely laughed at his jokes because he had such a serious demeanor that they couldn’t be certain he was joking. Outside of chess, which was the consuming passion of his life, his only hobby was fishing which he enjoyed immensely, especially when he was accompanied by his young son. Povilas played a major role in helping his fellow Lithuanian refugees establish themselves in their new homeland. He helped to raise funds to build the first Hamilton Lithuanian Church and Community Centre and was instrumental in establishing several Lithuanian organizations, including the Sports Club and the Credit Union. He took every opportunity of the Canadian political freedom he cherished so deeply to speak publicly against the illegal Soviet annexation of the Baltic nations. Povilas was a philosophical man and a life-long student of chess. Appropriately, his grave stone bears a carving of the Queen chess piece, the game’s most powerful player, and an inscription of Descartes' famous assertion, “Cogito, ergo sum”, which translated reads, “I think, therefore, I am.”
