1.0 Overview of Canadian Industrial Design Data and Images

Canadian industrial designs are the visual features of shape, configuration, pattern or ornament, or any combination of these features, applied to a finished article. Industrial designs bulk data contains information on registered Canadian industrial designs. A full description of what constitutes a design is provided in the Industrial Design Act and Regulations.

Information Supplied

This subsection describes the data being provided. Where appropriate, volumes will be indicated as well as the volumes of the updates and estimates of annual growth. These volumes are estimated based on volumes at the time of this document’s creation.

1.1 Industrial Design Data Industrial design data presently consists of all textual information captured by CIPO for a design since 1861. These industrial designs may be registered, expired, or expunged.

Registered designs: 167, 363

Weekly updates/new: 200

1.2 Industrial Design Images Industrial design images are also provided. The dissemination file will contain the image(s) of the industrial design in PNG format at 300 dpi. The filename of the image files will be structured “nnnnnnn.Dxxxxxx.PNG” for design images and nnnnnnn-Axxxxxx.PNG for images of the application with “nnnnnnn” being the registration number of the industrial design and xxxxxx being the image or registration sequence number.

1.3 Update Files Weekly update files will contain information pertaining to the newly registered industrial designs and any updates to registrations since the last update.

Weekly update xml files will be structured as follows:

• Registration updates: CA-IND-UPDATE_FromDate-ToDate_reg_NNN.zip • Assignment updates: CA-IND-UPDATE_FromDate-ToDate_asgn_NNN.zip • Reference includes schemas, report, classes, codes: CA-IND-UPDATE_FromDate-

ToDate_ref_NNN.zip • Files transferred: CA-IND-UPDATE_FromDate- ToDate_index.txt

Global updates:

• Registrations: CA-IND-GLOBAL_Date_reg_NNN.zip • Assignments: CA-IND-GLOBAL_Date_asgn_NNN.zip • References: CA-IND-GLOBAL _Date_ref_NNN.zip • Files transferred: CA-IND- GLOBAL _Date_index.txt

Where:

• FromDate and ToDate indicate the date range of the weekly dissemination. The format is YYYY-MM-DD.

• Date is the day on which the global is run. The format is YYYY-MM-DD. • NNN is a unique identifier within the range of 001 to 999. The size of each archive file is

approximatively 256 MB.

1.4 Country and Office Data The international standard ISO 3166-1; “Codes for the representation of names of countries and their subdivisions – Part 1: Country codes”, is used to represent countries for postal addresses. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) standard ST.3, “Two-letter codes for the representation of states, other entities, and intergovernmental organizations”, are used to indicate the name of the country or the office with which the earlier filing was made when industrial design applicants claim priority filing.

1.5 Industrial Design Information Included The following information is available for an industrial design. The information is based on the status of the registration. All registrations are assigned a unique registration number.

• Registration number • Registration date • Title • Description • Applicant information • Representative information • Canadian classification code • Canadian classification description • Priority claim(s) • Maintenance indicator • Registration status • Design records

1.6 Data Format The industrial design and related information is supplied in UTF-8 format where ZIP is the compression used for dissemination.

Back files

Back files are refreshed and distributed to subscribers on a semi-annual basis. Data is provided in XML following WIPO standard ST.86 and images are available in non-compressed PNG format. Back files provide the means to build an initial database for new subscribers. The semi-annual refresh of the back file is also used to resynchronize existing databases. The semi-annual back file is available on portable USB key.

Weekly updates

Weekly updates of industrial design data and images are delivered to clients on Fridays via an automated file transfer (FTP). Updates include new registrations and changes to existing registrations. The images are supplied in non-compressed PNG format.

1.7 Description of File Structure CIPO’s industrial design data is distributed in the XML schemas as defined in the WIPO standard ST.86. The schema has been extended to meet CIPO business needs. The Canadian extensions are described in this data dictionary.

All information regarding this standard as it relates to the file structure and technical specification can be found on the WIPO website at: wipo.int/standards/en/xml_material/st86 and schemas can be found in the weekly transfer file entitled: CA-IND-UPDATE_FromDate-ToDate_ref_NNN.zip. This file includes schemas, reports, classes, and codes.

1.8 Data Quality In 2007, the office conducted a back capture of all industrial design registrations from 1861 to 2002. There were data quality issues that resulted from this project and although the office corrected many issues, some data quality issues still exist. We appreciate data quality issues being brought to our attention as they are corrected as we receive them.
