Follow me throughout party season on twitter.com/suzannedimmaHHhouseandhome.com/dec10Discover Suzannes design inspirations in her monthly blog.webI would like to be able to say that Im the consummate entertainer, throwing parties every weekend and thriving on the planning and execution of the perfect event. Its a nice idea, but the truth is Im far happier being a guest than a host. Ive only recently begun to feel comfortable in the kitchen, and it has taken me a long time to work up the courage to throw a dinner party but Im working on it. Luckily for me, Im blessed with lots of fabulous foodie friends who love to gather people around their tables. At the end of a busy week, Im more than thrilled to oblige. And I return the favour by being ready with lots of furniture-arranging tips and colour advice! As a reluctant host, Im in awe of people who pull it off and make it look easy. As a frequent guest, Ive learned its the little things that make an occasion successful. Nothing makes guests feel more welcome than when you personally greet us at the door and get us settled with a glass of wine or champagne. We also love when you roll with the punches. I once mistook the date on an invitation to an Oscar party and showed up a day early. My hosts were throwing a casual get-together for friends, who I assumed were part of the Oscar fte. I was mortified when I realized my mistake, but my gracious hosts quietly replanned their menu and insisted I stay. They handled the mix-up with such aplomb that any embarrassment flew out the window and it was a memorable night for all of us. I know Ill never forget it! In the end, having a home full of happy guests doesnt come down to the decor, the theme or the menu. (Its taken me years to realize that even my culinary friends are just as content with simple pasta and a good bottle of wine as a five-course meal that includes beef bourguignon.) The key to being a great host is remembering to relax and have a good time. When youre having fun, your guests will, too, and the party will flow naturally. With this in mind, I plan to throw a few more parties than usual this holiday season. Im still not likely to host a really big bash, but Ill eventually work my way up to a larger affair and maybe even beef bourguignon. My dear friend (and constant party partner) Mark Challen and me at the always-festive LG Innovators Ball.DEC - Ed letter-j-w.indd 24 21/10/10 2:55 PMworldmags worldmagsworldmagsLAUREN BY RALPH LAUREN I NEW AT THE BAYThe household name in fashion and lifestyle design comes home to The Bay this fall with new living, dining and bedroom furniture collections. As the homeowners in our group of friends, we contribute the venue! Anguss passion for photography blossomed at the not-so-tender age of 20, when his mother gave him a 35mm Nikon for Christmas. To date, his photography has appeared in, among others, Canadian Family and Toronto Life. For this issue, he shot More or Less (page 42), Living (page 94), Cold Comforts (page 152) and much more.CRAILLE MAGUIRE GILLIES: I like to keep it simple: red wine, a wood-burning fire, music and a small group of people so we can have good conversations.Currently based on the West Coast as an editor at Vancouver magazine, St. Marys, Ont.-born Craille has lived in ve provinces over the past 10 years. While traversing the world (Have ight-approved dog kennel, will travel), she has written for Cottage Life, Canadian Geographic and The Globe and Mail. For this issue, she wrote Storewatch (page 32).RUTH GANGBAR: Im so busy working that I dont entertain that often, but when I do, Im really more of a spontaneous cook I like to prepare meals using a lot of simple, fresh and local ingredients.Ruth divides her time between Toronto and Prince Edward County, Ont., where this holiday, she might be found cooking at the woodstove. Her delectable work has graced the pages of Food & Drink and Cottage Life. No way! From the cover of the magazine to the final page, I was riveted. The growth and maturation of this mag is commendable. CHICK RICE, VancouverShame on you for featuring shagreen products (Gotta Have It) in your August issue! Stingrays may not be cute and fuzzy, but that does not mean they have less value as living creatures. That luxe look and tantalizing texture is available in faux shagreen, as well. Why not promote that? SARA GIBSON, Stony Plain, Alta. I look forward to your beautiful magazine every month. Unfortunately, my eyesight is failing somewhat and I have trouble reading very fine-lined, light lettering. As a baby boomer, I believe Im one of a large percentage of your readers who are, or will be, experiencing similar vision problems. Perhaps you may be able to address this concern in the near future. This is H&Hs fourth showhouse, and I hope youll agree its the best one yet. Weve all swooned over sleek minimalist interiors, but the truth is classic rooms, softly layered, are the real crowd-pleasers. In fact, some of my favourite details are the most traditional like the Welsh dresser in the dining room. It was custom-made by the craftsmen at Sharon ODowd Antiques in Toronto. I chose to paint it a soft taupe shade so it would stand out from the warm white walls, then added matte black iron hardware for contrast. The surprise came when we were able to find glazed pottery in the exact same shade at Crate & Barrel. The tone-on-tone effect of the ceramics against the painted beadboard is strong and graphic.Another dining room detail that really works is the Laura Ashley linen floral. When is the last time you considered floral-patterned drapes and matching skirted slipcovers on your dining chairs? It sounds terribly sweet but looks anything but. The secret is the muddy colour of the chintz, anchored by the ebony-stained table and dark iron chandelier.FavouriteMomentsLynda Reeves takes you behind the scenes of our stunning new showhouse.SEE SOURCE GUIDEIn the girls room, chintz paired with embroidered sheets by John Robshaw made a jaunty statement. Some of our paints (clockwise from top left): Churlish Green (251) by Farrow & Ball in the powder room; Cast Off (66) by Para for the upstairs guest room; Melt Down (9) by Para in the kitchen; and Paras Big Girls Dont Cry (67) for the girls room. Sometimes, simple is best, like these glazed dishes from Crate & Barrel that filled the custom Welsh dresser and the Laura Ashley linen floral for the drapes and slipcovers.Chunky seagrass woven mats add texture to the dining room. The dreamy yellow upstairs guest room features the famous Hanna chair from Oly.CONTINUEDDEC - Lynda-w.indd 46 10/22/10 11:00 AMworldmags worldmagsworldmagsworldmags worldmagsworldmagsVIEWThere are other nostalgic moments I think are very special. Take the black shutters in the sunroom: the narrow slats are a nod to the conservatories from Victorian times. The combination of full-length black shutters and a classic wood ceiling fan gently whirling over dark wicker armchairs is hard to beat.Another is the round window in the powder room. That was pure Gordon Ridgely, our star architect. To draw attention to it, we painted it high-gloss quince green (Churlish Green (251), Farrow & Ball) against eggshell walls the same colour. High-gloss paint dresses up a room, adding sparkle and formality to plain old drywall or simple wood trim.Pretty isnt a word we often associate with todays best interiors. But I was at the door when visitors entered our unabashedly pretty guest room, and I can tell you, pretty sells. We were inspired by Bruton Damask, a new linen floral by Jane Churchill. The palette of creams and greys meant buttercream walls and antiqued white furniture by Oly from Cocoon. Like all Oly designs, the Hanna bed and matching armchair are fresh takes on the familiar. If youre a moviegoer, you would have noticed this chair in Diane Keatons bedroom in Somethings Gotta Give. OK, so youre on to me. For more on how this famous movie house inspired us, see page 122. The whole second floor feels romantic, due in part to the low ceilings that have a cottage feel. We kept the furniture high to further exaggerate the feeling. After standing in the living room, with its soaring cathedral ceiling, theres a drama to the surprise of cosier heights upstairs. And then there is the kitchen. Sometimes a showhouse is, for me, a way to live vicariously. This is the kitchen I want. Minus an island, with serious chefs-grade appliances and the romance of a big table and chairs smack in the middle, its a place you never want to leave. What could be better? Well, winning this house for one thing! My best wishes to you and yours for a happy new year. houseandhome.com/dec10Get more insights from Lyndas video tours of the showhome.webH&H DECEMBER 2010 48DEC - Lynda-w.indd 48 20/10/10 12:46 PMworldmags worldmagsworldmagsworldmags worldmagsworldmagsClient:Product:Job#:Pub:Trim:Bleed:Safety:Coty PrestigeCk Beauty357486Canadian House & Home Nov. 10The Bay9 x 10.75 in.9.5 x 11.25 in.8.5 x 10.25 in.LEFT SIDE OF SPREAD357486_A1_CKBeauty_Revised_SP4C_Can_HouseandHome_Nov.indd 1 9/9/10 9:58 PMworldmags worldmagsworldmagsClient:Product:Job#:Pub:Trim:Bleed:Safety:Coty PrestigeCk Beauty357486Canadian House & Home Nov. 10The Bay9 x 10.75 in.9.5 x 11.25 in.8.5 x 10.25 in.RIGHT SIDE OF SPREADavailable at357486_A1_CKBeauty_Revised_SP4C_Can_HouseandHome_Nov.indd 2 9/9/10 9:58 PMworldmags worldmagsworldmagsINTERVIEWH&H DECEMBER 2010 52 SEE SOURCE GUIDEProduced by Kathryn Balahouseandhome.com/dec10Browse a gallery of Jonathans designs online.webOne suspects designer Jonathan Adler has a great sense of humour just by looking at his cheeky designs. Reading the not-so-fine print on his website confirms it. Take his latest bio entry: Tapped to design a real-life Malibu Dream House to celebrate Barbies 50th. Can finally make amends for decapitating sisters Barbie in 1974. Its the same gleeful irreverance that put canisters labelled Prozac and zebra-shaped rugs decorated with the Union Jack in fashionable homes. This is Adlers stylish sleight of hand: hes able to integrate lightheartedness into serious design ideas. His Deco-inspired animal sculptures come to mind first, but he has a large body of other work to prove it, including housewares, accessories, textiles, furniture, lighting and stationery. I believe design should come with a dose of levity, he says. Things can be beautiful and high-minded while still being happy. Happiness is not only a state of being for Adler but an approach to business. His Happy Chic brand makes design approachable and fun. And he has just released two new books, Accessorizing and Colors (Sterling, 2010), that strive to bring his joyful ethos to the masses. Adler fell in love with pottery as a child, and his works now include elegant sculptures and collectors pieces. He became a household name after opening eponymous retail stores in Miami, Chicago, San Francisco and New York. And he appeared as a judge on Bravos Top Design. But what Adler values most is time at home with his husband, Simon Doonan, creative director for Barneys New York, and their beloved Norwich terrier, Liberace. Jonathan Adler: Just more, more, more! Im happiest designing new stuff. H&H: Are you still most passionate about pottery, though? JA: I am, first and foremost, a potter. I was 12 when I first tried pottery at summer camp. Id gone to be a soccer star, but then I laid eyes on the superfoxy pottery teacher and decided to take his class instead. The minute I touched clay, I was obsessed and Ive been passionate about it ever since.H&H: Are you from a creative family? JA: Yes. We lived in a remote farm town, but my parents were urban refugees. Many of my design influences are from my childhood. I was brought up in a very groovy house. My dad was a rigorous modernist, so the house was all white and full of Knoll furniture. My mother has a more colourful and exuberant spirit, so she accessorized our pad with lots of Marimekko fabrics and nifty trouvs. H&H: How much hands-on work do you do these days? JA: A ton. All of our prototypes are handmade in my pottery studio in SoHo.H&H: What do you think is your most successful design? JA: Thats a tough one, because I love all my stuff. My fave piece at this moment might be my Horse Tray. I love how all the lines flow into each other. I know something is good when it looks like its supposed to be that way. Good design almost feels revealed rather than created like it was always there, waiting to be discovered.H&H: Do you feel you had a lucky break at any point in your career? JA: After college, I worked in the movie business for several years and got fired from every job I had. So I gave up and decided to become a potter. When I showed my pots to a buyer at Barneys, I got an order. So we always have friends over for dinner. Simple fare roasted chicken, apple pie, grilled veggies and a game of ping-pong to aid digestion.H&H: Any advice for others who find entertaining stressful? JA: Host a buffet dinner with comfort food and serve yourself first it takes the pressure off everyone.H&H: How has working with Aid to Artisans enriched your life? JA: Its always rewarding to work with organizations that are enhancing the lives of others. Im really proud to have created hundreds of jobs in Peru. H&H: What are you most proud of? JA: That I have stayed true to myself, and my dream of being a potter, after all these years. The event planner and caterer is currently writing a book filled with quick tips and ideas for everyday hosts to impress their guests. As director of Torontos trendsetting Eatertainment Special Events & Catering, hes responsible for planning some of the most glamorous parties in the country, including soires for high-profile actors and politicians (a certain Mr. Pitt and Mr. Clinton have been clients). Eatertainment also runs Torontos iconic Bloor Street Diner and Panorama restaurants, and is behind big charity events, including the annual Fashion Cares gala, which Sebastien co-chaired for a number of years. But, glitz and glamour aside, Sebastien relishes entertaining, no matter who is on the guest list. He entertains often in his own home, giving VIP treatment to family and friends. A simple trick he employs frequently is using guests names in table settings. People like to see their name. It makes them feel special, he says. Sebastiens goal is always to give that extra bit to make guests feel like the night was about them in some way. He and his wife, Sheila, renovated their wartime bungalow to better accommodate their never-ending rotation of guests, as well as life at home with their children, Logan, 9, and Colsen, 12. I can come off doing parties for the Toronto International Film Festival and want to have more people over. Growing up, we always had friends around. Are there any new trends in entertaining that excite you?SC: Im really happy to see that people are entertaining more. Its like what happened in home decor 15 years ago; it just exploded and, now, theres 100 different shows on design. People are more sophisticated. And I think the same thing is happening now to entertaining. Its getting a lot more coverage. What I love about this is that its bringing entertaining to everyone. And I like the LFP movement [local flavour plus] thats based on the 100-Mile Diet. What about specific food items?SC: Companies are coming out with all different types of spices, flavoured sugars and salts. Its very trendy. What is your pet peeve as a host?SC: My pet peeve is when someone doesnt let you know that they have dietary restrictions. If someone shows up and they dont eat fish, for example, Ill figure out something for them, but its better to be able to plan in advance. It goes back to making people feel special. What is the best type of guest? SC: They arrive and leave in a taxi, so they can have a great time and not worry about driving. They arrive on time and dont ever feel they have to leave. And they come back often its not about what people bring us, or anything like that. We are stocked already. What do you like to bring as a hostess gift? SC: Ill bring a bottle of champagne and, the next day, send flowers as a thank-you when they can enjoy them better. Or Ill bring two bottles of wine one to have with dinner and one that the hosts can enjoy together, just the two of them. Or some great sugars and salts would be nice. What is the best host gift youve ever received?SC: Someone came over once who didnt know us well, and they brought a bottle of wine for us and a couple of Disney movies for the kids. It was so nice. It gave the kids something fun to do while we were having dinner. What makes a party memorable?SC: I want people to feel special whenDEC - Entertaining-j-w.indd 60 21/10/10 11:32 AMworldmags worldmagsworldmagsFile:06388_KraRitz_CHH_01_ENDocket/Job:06388Client:KraftTrim:9" (w) x 10.75" (h)Safety:.25"Bleed:.125"Publication:Can. By corralling bottles and glassware in one compact place, this do-it-yourself caddy is perfect for a small space or as a second drink station. Its also inexpensive to make, especially if you already have a side table that could use sprucing up. When cocktail hour is over, simply roll it out of the way until its ready to be used again. 1. Choose a small wood table I used an inexpensive side table from Ikea, which I chose for its cool mod aesthetic. I also like that it has a second shelf, which can be used to store wineglasses and crystal. Once youve chosen a table, drill holes in the base of each leg and screw in casters. 2. Cover the tabletop with cork Cut a piece of cork 2" smaller than the surface of the tabletop. The cork will protect the surface and help prevent bottles from sliding about. If your table is round, use a protractor to draw a circle on the sheet of cork, then cut it out using a utility knife. Adhere the cork to the tabletop with contact cement.3. Add a guardrail A decorative chain rail gives the cart a polished look. I chose a brass ball chain, which is sold at most hardware stores, and diamond-shaped eye hooks to create geometric interest. With a pencil, mark eight evenly spaced points around the perimeter of the tabletop about 1" in from the edge. Drill holes at each point and screw in the eye hooks. Cut the chain to size with pliers, loop it through the hooks and close with its fixed clasp.project: Transform a side table into a handy bar cart.what youll need: Side table, 4 casters, sheet of cork, 5' of brass ball chain, 8 eye hooks, contact cementRaising the BarA second shelf allows for handy glass storage STEPHANIE WHITEDesign EditorSide table, Ikea; eye hooks, Mjlk; casters, Lee Valley Tools; wineglasses, ice bucket, Angus & Company; rug, Elte; corkscrew, Cynthia Findlay Antiques; wall colour, Calke Green (34), Farrow & Ball.houseandhome.com/dec10See more of our editors easy DIY projects on H&H Online TV.webDEC - Editor_DIY-m-w.indd 70 18/10/10 1:51 PMworldmags worldmagsworldmagsModelshownisLimitedFWDwithoptionalwheels:$38,599MSRP.FeatureisincludedwithSYNConSELandstandardonLimitedand Sportmodels.*Estimatedfuelconsumptionratingsforthe2011EdgeFWDSST3.5LV6Automatic/FWD3.5LV6Automatic:11.2L/100kmCity,7.4 L/100km Hwy./11.2 L/100km City, 7.6 L/100km Hwy.
