New Canadian designed Ferry for State of Alaska
Submitted by Capilano Maritime Design Ltd.
At a ceremony on April 2nd, 2011, Alaska Ship & Drydock Inc.
delivered a new double-ended ro-ro passenger ferry to the
State of Alaska. The new vessel, christened the M/V Ken
Eichner-2, was designed and engineered by Capilano Maritime
Design Ltd. of North Vancouver.
The vessel; will serve as a link between the Greater Ketchikan
International Airport and the city of Ketchikan alongside the
M/V Oral Freeman. The ferry accommodates 149 persons, and
either 23 cars, or two large semi-trailers and eight cars.
The M/V Ken Eichner-2 provides a significant increase in
deadweight capacity over her sister, in addition to a 5%
displacement allowance for future growth in light ship. The
off-centreline starboard side deckhouse allows for easier
loading and unloading of large trucks and is countered by a
15long ton of fresh water ballast.
The vessel incorporates a number of special featured in order
to meet the Owner’s manning requirement of just two crew
members.
The ferry was designed and built under the USCG (Subchapter
T-Small Passenger Vessels) and ABS (AMS, Ai+, under 90 m
Rules, Ro-Ro Passenger Vehicle.
The principal particulars of the new vessel are as follows:
Length Overall: 116 ft. – 6 in
Beam (Breadth): 48 ft – 0 in
Depth (Moulded): 12 ft – 0 in
Design Draft: 9 ft – 0 in
Design Displacement 422.7 long tons
Lightship Weight: 272.1 long tons
Fuel: 8,600 US Gallons
Propulsion: Conventional, one propeller
turning at each end
Main Engines: Two 850 HP Cummins KTA
38 MO Tier engines
Generators: Two 55 kW Northern Lights
M55 C2 Tier II
Design Speed: 10 knots
Service Speed: 8 knots

Two new ferries added to the Newfoundland
and Labrador Fleet
Submitted by Walter Pumphrey
The first phase of a Vessel Replacement Strategy for the
Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is the
construction of two Ro-Ro ferries at Kiewit Offshore
Services, Marystown NL, a division of Peter Kiewit Sons’
Company. Each ferry is forty-two (42) meters in length
and will carry eighty (80) passengers and sixteen (16)
cars, or one (1) transport truck and eleven (11) cars.
The preliminary design was completed by Poseidon
Marine Consultants Limited, St. John’s and was tested
in ice and open water by Oceanic Consulting
Corporation at the Institute of Ocean Technology. The
project is valued at $55 million. The vessels were
christened the M/V Grace Sparkes and the M/V Hazel
McIsaac on March 11, 2011. The two vessels are
undergoing final inspections, finishing, sea trials and
crew familiarization and expected to go into service in
April and May 2011. The M/V Grace Sparkes is
scheduled for the St. Brendan’s service replacing the
M/V Hamilton Sound and the M/V Hazel McIsaac is
scheduled for the Little Bay Islands service replacing the
M/V Island Joiner, both of the vessels being replaced
will be decommissioned.
NATIONAL AND MARINE FIRE SERVICES INC.
recently installed a SEMCO Sem-Safe High-Pressure
Water Mist system and Vehicle Deck Drencher system
aboard the M.S. Chi-Cheemaun.
Submitted by Richard Muller Vice President National
and Marine Fire Service Inc.
This is the first Water Mist System installed in Canada
aboard a Canadian flagged vessel by a Canadian
company. Water has traditionally been used to
extinguish fires by “cooling the flames”. Water applied
to fire increases the temperature of the water and energy
is absorbed by the water resulting in a cooling effect.
Water Mist Systems use this same principle but, by
forcing water at high pressure through micro nozzles and
converting the water into tiny droplets, the cooling effect
is up to seven times higher compared to traditional
sprinkler systems. This reduces the water consumption
by up to 90% in comparison to traditional sprinkler
systems. The water mist system aboard the M.S. Chi-
Cheemaun is designed to protect both accommodation
spaces and specific engine room components. The
system design will automatically activate if a fire is
detected at any of the four main engines, three
generators, two boilers and/or the accommodation
passageways. Only the affected section will be
enveloped in a cloud of water mist for as long as
necessary to extinguish the fire.
The vehicle deck is divided into four drencher zones
which can be manually activated from a central location.
The new piping, drencher pump and nozzles will provide
a fine spray to the activated zone until the system is
reset.
Both systems were designed, approved and fully tested
to current Lloyds Register Regulations.
