THE CANADIAN CLUB.

The Canadian Club of Harvard University is com-

posed of such officers, graduates, and undergraduates of the

University as are of Canadian birth, or have resided and

take an interest in the Dominion of Canada.

Its objects are to afford a means of re-union for Canadian

students in the University, and to facilitate the acquisition of

information by students in Canada desirous of pursuing

advanced courses in this University.

Canadians coming to Harvard are invited to notify be-

forehand any of the officers or members of the Club, so that

they may be welcomed on arrival.

The following summary, though very condensed, will give

Canadians some idea of the great resources and superior

advantages of Harvard.

Harvard University comprehends the following depart-

ments : The Graduate School, Harvard College, the Law-rence Scientific School, the Divinity School, the Law School,

the Medical School, the Dental School, the School of Veter-

inary Medicine, the Bussey Institution (a School of Agricul-

ture), the University Library, the . University Museum(Zoology, Geology, Geography, Botany, Mineralogy), the

Botanic Garden, the Herbarium, the Astronomical Observa-

tory, and the Peabody Museum of American Archaeology

and Ethnology.

The Staff of Instructors comprises 217 professors, assistant-

professors, instructors and assistants. The number of

students in attendance in 1889-90 is 2097.

There are 47 buildings, including the Astronomical Obser-

vatory, ample laboratories, museums — the floor area of the

University Museum alone is 4 acres— dormitories, a dining

hall capable of seating 750 persons.

There is a splendid Gymnasium open to all students,

affording ample means for exercise. The Weld Boat Club

House on the Charles River, near the University, opened in

[890, gives opportunity for boating to all students at a low

eost. There are also large grounds laid out for athletic

sports of every description, including base ball, cricket,

tennis, etc.

THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY

Contains 360,400 volumes, exclusive of pamphlets and

maps, which number some 350,000. About 11,000 volumes

are added each year.

Students have also access to the Boston Public Library

(500,000 volumes), and the Cambridge Public Library

(125,000 volumes).

The various professional schools of the University, as well

as the different departments in the Graduate School and in

Harvard College, publish detailed descriptions of the courses

offered. Copies of these descriptions may be obtained gratis

on application to the Secretary of the University.

EXPENSES.

The average annual expenses of an economical student

may be set down at about $475.00 though many have lived

comfortably on $400.

Members of any department of the University can board at

cost by joining the Association which uses the great dining-

hall of Memorial Hall. The cost of board to the members

of this association in 1889-90 did not exceed an average of

$4.00 a week. The Hall opens on the last Wednesday in

September.

About one hundred members of the various departments of

the University are admitted annually to the Foxcroft Club, a

cooperative organization having commodious quarters adjoin-

ing the College yard. Separate articles of wholesome food are

furnished to order at cost, making it possible to board at the

Club for from $2.00 to $3.00 a week. By using the Club's

study and reading rooms and its reference library members

are enabled to lodge cheaply at a distance from the Univer-

sity or in suburban towns. The annual fees of the Club are

low—$7.50.

HARVARD UNIVERSITY AID FUNDS.

Funds to the amount of over one million two hundred thou-

sand dollars are held in trust for the benefit of deserving stu-

dents of Harvard University whose means are limited. Theincome of these funds for the year 1890-91 will amount to

about $70,000. It will be distributed in the form of Fellow-

ships, Scholarships, Price Greenleaf Aid, and Beneficiary

Money.

PECUNIARY AID IN THE GRADUATE DEPART-MENT.

The Fellowships are twenty-two in number,* of which twen-

ty can be enjoyed only by members of the Graduate Depart-

ment. The Scholarships are one hundred and sixty-two in

number, of which twenty may be enjoyed by Graduate stu-

dents, one hundred and five by Undergraduates only, and

the remainder—thirty-seven—by students in the professional

schools.

Some of the Fellowships are assignable only to graduates

of Harvard College, but more than half may be held by

graduates of other colleges who come to Cambridge for the

purpose of graduate study. Applications for any of these Fel-

lowships must be in the hands of the Secretary of the Uni-

versity on or before the last day of March.

* Including the Tyndall Scholarship.

PECUNIARY AID IN THE COLLEGE.

( )i the Scholarships assignable to candidates for the degree

of Bachelor of Arts, none arc promised previous to the stu-

dent's coming- to Cambridge and entering upon his College

work. In January of the Freshman year, eight or nine

Scholarships are assigned to proper applicants of the highest

rank. All other College Scholarships are assigned on the

basis of an entire year of successful work in College.

Applications for the Freshman Scholarships must be presen-

ted on or before the first day of November of the Freshman

year. The aggregate annual income of the College Scholar-

ships is $29,590.

PRICE GREENLEAF AID.

Although College Scholarships are not promised in ad-

vance to undergraduates, about $12,000 of the income from the

bequest of the late E. Price Greenleaf may be so promised.

In order to secure Price Greenleaf Aid, a candidate must

obtain from the Secretary of the University, in time to return

them before May 1, certain blanks to be used in applying for

this aid.

At present it may safely be said that any graduate or stu-

dent of another college who wishes to come to Cambridge as

a candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Arts may, if his

rank has been distinctly high, and his recommendations from

his teachers are strong, feel sure of receiving from $150 to

$250 from the Price Greenleaf Fund during the first year of

his residence in Cambridge.

A detailed description of the Harvard University Aid

Funds may be had on application to the Secretary.

RELIGIOUS SERVICES.

Harvard University is in the truest sense non-sectarian.

Religious worship is conducted daily in Appleton Chapel,

but attendance thereon is wholly voluntary. The most dis-

tinguished divines in the country conduct these services, and

students have the opportunity not only of hearing but of mak-

ing the personal acquaintance of the most prominent clergy,

such as Rev. Phillips Brooks, Lyman Abbott, and Theodore

Munger.

The University pays for sittings in the different Churches

in Cambridge, for the use of Students.

LECTURES.

Afternoon and evening lectures are given throughout the

Session, on a great variety of topics, not only by the Pro-

fessors in the University, but by distinguished men in every

walk of life and belonging to various countries.

JOURNALISM.

A clever writer can generally find remunerative employ-ment on some of the numerous papers published in Boston.

Practice in editing is also offered by the four papers pub-

lished by the Students: The Daily Crimson, Advocate,

Monthly, Lampoon. The Law Review and the Quarterly Journal of Economics

are published by the University.
