11:30 AM – 12:30 PM The CARR Working Group – A new Reference Rate for Canada Harri Vikstedt, Senior Director, Financial Markets Development, Bank of Canada Karl Wildi, Managing Director and Vice-Chair, Global Markets, CIBC Capital Markets Our presenters will discuss the work undertaken by the CARR (Canadian Alternative Reference Rate) Working Group in developing new reference rate(s) for Canadian financial products. The new rate(s) will operate alongside CDOR, but will likely become the predominant reference rate, in time, for cash products and derivative contracts alike.

As more hybrids are expected to come to the market and more companies are expected to follow the TransCanada and Enbridge example, it’s time to discuss credit rating agencies’ approach to hybrids. Rating agencies will shed some light on their methodology and dealers will share their view on hybrid debt. The focus of the session will be on hybrid capital instruments, including the rating agency methodologies, market considerations and development of the Canadian market.

It will also cover the steps that sponsors are taking to understand, measure and potentially remove the longevity risk from their plan, both from a Canadian, but also global perspective.

Peter Adu Vice President – Senior Analyst, Moody’s Peter is a Vice President and Senior Analyst in the Moody’s Corporate Finance Group based in Toronto. He is responsible for a portfolio of companies in various industries including retail, manufacturing, packaged goods and business/consumer service. Peter holds an M.A in Economics from York University and an M.A. in Public Administration from Carleton University. He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst.

Kristi Ashcroft Senior Investment Director – Fixed Income, Mackenzie Investments Kristi is the Senior Investment Director with Mackenzie's Fixed Income team. She is responsible for communication of all aspects of Mackenzie’s suite of fixed income products, including portfolio construction, positioning and performance of their various investment strategies. Kristi’s career in the investment industry began in 1996. She worked for many years in the fixed income division of investment banks in New York and London in interest-rate derivatives, structured products and securitization. She has a degree in Economics from Princeton University, and is a CFA Charterholder.

Tom Ault Head of Longevity Practice, Aon Hewitt Tom is a Partner and Actuary in Aon’s Retirement Practice in Canada. He has 18 years of experience working as an actuarial consultant in the United Kingdom and Canada, enabling him to fully understand how different organizations approach risk management in their pension plans. Tom leads Aon's risk settlement and longevity consulting initiatives in Canada. His experience includes assisting a range of private and public sector clients and multi-employer plans specializing in risk management, plan design, actuarial valuations, funding options, asset liability work and longevity consulting. A graduate of the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne (UK) with a Masters of Mathematics and Statistics degree, Tom is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries (England) and a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries.

Divya Bendre Associate – Infrastructure & Real Estate Group, HSBC Securities (USA) Inc.

Divya is a Sustainable Finance Associate in HSBC’s Infrastructure and Real Estate Group where she leads green bond advisory in the Americas and supports other sustainable finance initiatives across the organization. She also supports project finance and advisory transactions in the region. Previously, she was a graduate intern at leading responsible investment organizations—PRI's UN Sustainable Stock Exchanges Initiative and Ceres—where she worked on strengthening corporate Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) disclosure. Divya has been with HSBC since 2015 and she also has over 5 years of experience in business development, research, and management consulting roles in Asia. She has a Master of Science in Sustainability Management from Columbia University, a Postgraduate Diploma in Policy Studies from the University of London (SOAS) and a

Bachelor of Engineering from the National University of Singapore.

Chris Bent Senior Legal Counsel, OSC Chris is a Senior Legal Counsel in the Investment Funds and Structured Products Branch of the Ontario Securities Commission and is Project Chair of the CSA Modernization of Investment Fund Product Regulation - Alternative Funds Project. Prior to joining the OSC in 2009, Chris spent 4 years as legal counsel with Fidelity Investments Canada in Toronto with responsibility for its retail mutual fund business line. Before that he was Legal Counsel for IMAX Corporation, and also practiced securities law as an associate with the law firm Fasken Martineau LLP in Toronto. Chris holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree from Osgoode Hall Law School and a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from Queens University.

Andrew Branion Executive VP and Group Treasurer, Scotiabank

Andrew is responsible for managing Scotiabank’s global treasury and investment operations, including medium-term and capital funding, asset/liability management, liquidity and public and private investment portfolios. Previously, Andrew was Executive Vice President and Chief Market Risk Officer, where he was responsible for Trade Floor Risk Management, Enterprise Risk, Risk and Capital Analytics, and Model Risk Management. Andrew joined Scotiabank in 1997 from the Bank of Canada, and held progressively senior roles in Global Banking and Markets before moving to Global Risk Management in January 2012. He is Vice-Chairman of the Providence Healthcare Foundation Board. Andrew holds a Master of Business Administration degree with a concentration in Finance from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alberta.

Benjamin Breitholtz Chief Data Scientist at Arbor Research & Trading, LLC Ben is well-known for his data-driven coverage of central bank policies, inflation and broad macroeconomic themes. He has run the gamut of analysis from producing algorithmic trading strategies to getting deep into the minds of consumers using the unstructured data of search trends and social media. Ben earned a Bachelors degree in Finance from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and a Masters of Science in Predictive Analytics from Northwestern University. His comments and research are frequently used in corporate boardrooms and quoted by financial media. In addition, Ben is a main contributor to the Bianco Research, LLC, Newsclips research product.

Michael Burns, Partner, Co-Chair Investment Funds and Asset Management Group, McMillan LLP Michael is a partner in the Capital Markets and M&A Group with McMillan LLP’s Toronto office and Co-Chair of the Firm’s Investment Funds and Asset Management Group. Michael provides advice on all facets of securities law with a particular emphasis on alternative investment funds, mutual funds and structured products. He regularly advises portfolio managers, investment fund managers and dealers in relation to obtaining all necessary registrations to conduct business as well as on regulatory compliance matters. He also provides advice to foreign-domiciled portfolio managers, investment fund managers and dealers on offerings investment services and products to residents of Canada. Michael's securities law work covers a wide variety of transactions including mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, take-over bids (hostile and friendly) and proxy contests as well as acting on behalf of issuers or underwriters/agents in relation to private placements, rights offerings, and initial public offerings of securities. His corporate finance experience has included issuers in industries such as mining (both junior and senior issuers), technology, advertising/corporate communications, television/entertainment production, real estate investment trusts and transportation.

James Chapman Senior Research Director, Bank of Canada James is the Senior Research Director in the Funds Management and Banking Department at the Bank of Canada. James received a Ph.D. in economics and a MSc in statistics from the University of Iowa in 2006. He joined the Bank of Canada as a senior analyst in that year. James’s primary research focus has been on interbank market and financial market infrastructure issues such as liquidity risk and credit risk in large-value payment systems as well as the efficiency of interbank markets. Recently James’s research focus has evolved to include research on fintech related topics. These topics include the use of distributed ledger technology in financial market infrastructure, specifically the Bank’s Project Jasper, as well as questions related to digital currencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and initial coin offerings. From March 2015 to October 2016 James was the research director at Payments Canada the operator of the core Canadian payments infrastructure.

Ian de Verteuil

Managing Director and Head of Portfolio Strategy, CIBC World Markets

Ian joined CIBC Capital Markets in 2014. In addition to his involvement with various stock selection, pension and asset management committees, he is focused on thematic research – searching out actionable, money-making opportunities that cut across multiple sectors, disciplines and investment approaches. Ian has had a long career in the investment business. He started as a fundamental analyst with a Canadian broker dealer in 1987 and for most of the next two decades was a top-ranked analyst as measured by various external rating services, including Brendan Woods, Greenwich and Starmine. Over that period, he was an industry-leading analyst in multiple sectors, including consumer products, special situations, insurance and banking.

Jean-Sébastien Gagné Managing Director, Term Funding & Securitization, Corporate Treasury, Banque Nationale Jean-Sébastien has worked within the Corporate Treasury of the National Bank since 2010. He is responsible for the Funding and Securitization activities of the Bank and has over 15 years of experience in financial markets. His different mandates within National Bank have allowed him to acquire extensive and practical knowledge of domestic and international debt capital markets as well as securitization activities. Jean-Sébastsien has held various positions with the bank since 2003. He holds a Master’s degree in Finance and a Bachelor of Finance from Université HEC. He is also a CFA charterholder.

Chris Gootkind Co-Chair, US Credit Roundtable Chris is a vice president, director of credit research and credit strategist at Loomis, Sayles & Company. Chris has 35 years of fixed income investment experience and joined Loomis Sayles in 2010. Previously, he was a vice president and fixed income portfolio manager at Wellington Management, where he initially joined as director of credit research in 2000. Prior to Wellington, Chris held various investment roles at Scudder Kemper Investments, including head of credit research and portfolio manager. Chris is a past president and board member of CFA Society Boston. He is a founding member and current co-leader of the Credit Roundtable, a group of institutional fixed income managers whose mission is to improve the investment grade corporate bond market, including strengthening bondholder covenant protections. He also authored the current reading on Fundamentals of Credit Analysis for the Chartered Financial Analysts (CFA) exam curriculum. Chris earned a BA from Williams College and an MBA from the Harvard Business School.

Jonathan Gray Vice-President, HSBC Securities Jon is responsible for the Capital Solutions business across the Americas at HSBC, leading the effort on structuring and originating hybrid capital securities for financial and corporate clients. Jon has been with HSBC since 2011 and previously was an analyst on the Financial Institutions Ratings team at S&P. Jon graduated from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University in 2008 and is a CFA charterholder.

David A Kaplan Director, Health Care, S&P Global Ratings David is a Director in the Corporate Ratings department of S&P Global Ratings, where he leads a team of credit analysts covering the pharmaceutical companies and other healthcare companies. David joined the S&P Global’ s corporate and government ratings group in 2007, and has roles specializing in recovery analysis and hybrid capital instruments. David’s experience within the group spans various sectors including financial institutions, upstream and midstream energy, in addition to healthcare. Prior to joining the ratings group, David covered the semiconductor equipment companies for S&P’s US Equity Research Group. Prior to joining S&P, David worked in the equity research department at Merrill Lynch. David received a bachelor degree in Administrative Studies from York University in Toronto, Canada, and earned an MBA in Finance from the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College.

Kevin Kwok Vice President ESG Research, MSCI Kevin helps lead the development of ESG Fixed Income Research at MSCI. He is responsible for producing fixed income research, enhancing methodologies, and developing new products to support client efforts in integrating ESG factors into fixed income investments. MSCI ESG Research is the largest provider of ESG Ratings and analytics to global institutional investors. Prior to joining MSCI in 2018, Kevin was most recently an Associate Director in S&P Global Ratings’ Energy, Materials, and Commodities practice and a member of the ESG initiative. He led credit rating analyses in the oil and gas industry, primarily covering exploration and production, and oilfield services companies.

Andrew Lin Managing Director, Head of Energy and Project Finance DBRS Andrew leads the Energy and Project Finance rating teams at DBRS globally. The Energy group covers oil & gas companies, pipelines, utilities and independent power developers. The Project Finance group is responsible for rating non-recourse projects, primarily in the power and energy sectors. He is also leading DBRS’ corporate ratings expansion into Europe. Andrew holds a P. Eng license and is a CFA charterholder. He studied Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo and completed his MBA at York University’s Schulich School of Business.

Stephen Lobo Treasurer, BMO

Stephen is Treasurer of BMO Financial Group. He is responsible for the strategic management of the Bank’s capital, liquidity and funding and structural interest rate risk. Stephen is also responsible for enterprise Recovery and Resolution Planning. Stephen joined BMO Financial Group in June 2013 and served as US Treasurer, BMO Financial Corp. He was previously employed at Northern Trust Corporation, where he most recently held the role of Global Head of Market and Liquidity Risk. He has been in the financial services industry for over 26 years and he has held progressively more senior roles over the course of his career. He has experience building and leading the various Treasury activities and has also served as Treasurer at prior organizations. Stephen received his B.A. in Economics from Lake Forest College, an M.A. in Economics from DePaul University and an MBA in Finance from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Nicole Martin Senior Director, Green Evaluations – Americas, S&P Global Ratings Nicole is a Senior Director at S&P Global Ratings, where she is Sustainable Finance Head and Green Evaluations Analytic Coordinator for the Americas. Prior to joining S&P Global Ratings’ Sustainable Finance group, Nicole managed the Toronto-based credit rating team for regulated utilities and commodities-based corporates across Canada for several years.

Ian McKinnon Chair, CBIA & Executive Vice-President Core Fixed Income, Addenda Capital Ian is responsible for developing and implementing the Core Fixed Income at Addenda Capital (since 2018) and Preferred Shares strategies, as well as overseeing asset allocation for balanced portfolios. In the past, he held the roles of Co-Chief Investment Officer, Core Fixed Income & Insurance (2016-2018); Deputy Chief Investment Officer, Core Fixed Income and Insurance (2015-2016); Senior Vice-President, Core Fixed Income and Head, Corporate Bonds (2014-2015). He is a member of the Asset Mix Committee (Chair), Investment Committee and Executive Committee.

Brian Minns Vice President, Sustainable Investing, Addenda Brian is responsible for the continuous improvement of Addenda Capital’s incorporation of environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues into investment analysis and decision-making processes throughout the firm. He also engages with companies, regulators and policymakers on ESG matters in order to promote sustainable development.

James Perry Senior Vice President & Director, Arbor Research & Trading Inc.

Arbor is a quantitative, analytical investment research organization headquartered in Chicago. Jim has spent his entire career in the international bond market, having held senior positions in New York, London, Tokyo. Jim joined Arbor, from London, in 1995 and became an equity partner in 2000. His incisive, strategic judgement has been essential to the development, and fundamental to the success, of Arbor’s operations in Europe, Asia and Canada. Jim has a BA in International Affairs from Florida State University (1981), and an MBA from in International Finance from Fordham University (1987). Jim approaches his analysis from a global, economic perspective, with a vigorous focus on the quantitative and analytical components of the International bond markets.

Ben Rabidoux President, North Cove Advisors Inc. Ben is the founder and president of North Cove Advisors, a boutique market research firm focusing on Canadian housing, macroeconomic, and household credit trends.

John Ruffolo Special Advisor, OMERS Ventures Mr. Ruffolo is a special advisor at OMERS Ventures, the venture arm of OMERS, one of Canada’s leading pension funds. OMERS Ventures is a multi-stage investor in growth-oriented, disruptive technology companies. In addition, he is also the Executive Managing Director with OMERS Platform Investments, the innovation investing arm of OMERS.

Aditya Shanker Vice President, Trading Products, BMO Capital Markets Aditya’s current position is Vice President, Trading Products, BMO Capital Markets and Tech lead for BMO’s pilot blockchain transaction with Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan. Aditya participated in and won 2 blockchain hackathons in Toronto and Washington DC respectively and also won runners up at blockchain hackathon in New York. He has an MBA, Finance from the University of British Columbia (2018) and a BS in Computer Science from Purdue University (2010).

Harri Vikstedt Senior Director, Financial Markets Development, Bank of Canada Harri joined the Bank of Canada in 2006 after having worked in global financial markets in both Europe and North America for the prior 17 years. He managed the Bank’s Canadian dollar trading operations during the financial crisis, including those related to open market operations and foreign exchange. Harri is currently a Senior Director in the Financial Markets Department responsible for implementing the Bank’s strategy for acquiring and analyzing financial market intelligence, including through the Canadian Foreign Exchange Committee (CFEC) and the Canadian Fixed-Income Forum (CFIF). In April 2018, Harri became the co-chair of the Canadian Alternative Reference Rates (CARR) working group responsible for developing a new term risk-free Canadian interest rate benchmark. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst and completed his engineering and MBA (Finance) degrees at the University of Toronto.

Karl Wildi Managing Director and Vice-Chair, Global Markets, CIBC Capital Markets

Karl joined CIBC in 2010 as Head of Capital Markets (Europe) based in London where he managed the firm’s European trading desks, including Foreign Exchange, Rates / Fixed Income, Equity Derivatives, Commodities, Cash Equities and Funding / Repo. In 2013, Karl moved back to Toronto to assume responsibility for CIBC Capital Markets’ Rates and Fixed Income franchise, which included government, credit, and derivative trading in our main trading hubs of Toronto, New York, London and Hong Kong. Karl moved to his current role in 2016 as Vice-Chair in CIBC’s Capital Markets division providing coverage of key clients across the Asset Management, Insurance, Bank, and Pension Fund sectors. He is also focused on product innovation and new business development. In 2018, Karl became the Co-Chair of the CARR working group responsible for developing a new term risk-free Canadian interest rate benchmark. Prior to joining CIBC Capital Markets, Mr. Wildi spent over 25 years in a variety of global markets positions and most recently was Canadian Head of Fixed Income, Currencies and Commodities for a large U.S. bank based in Toronto.

Chris Witkowski Senior Principal, Global Credit Products Group, OTPP Chris specializes in the fundamental and relative value analysis of corporate credit and is responsible for managing a number of the cash corporate bond strategies for the group. Chris joined the Global Credit Products group in November 2014. Prior to joining Ontario Teachers’, Chris spent more than 18 years analyzing companies in various roles on both the buy side and sell side, including ten years at a multi-strategy hedge fund and six years at Morgan Stanley. Chris holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Toronto and is a CFA charterholder.
