PrologueThe Christening Day of Princess Aurora

it is the day of the grand gala. everyone of

importance has been invited to celebrate the

christening of the Kingdom’s new princess

– Princess aurora. Catalabutte, the Chief

Steward, is bustling about making sure all the

arrangements are in order. aurora’s six fairy

godmothers arrive to bestow upon the infant

princess their special graces. the Fairy of

tenderness, in white, personifies beauty and

candor. the Fairy of Carefreeness brings grace

and the gift of dancing. the gift of the Fairy

of generosity is fertility and a life free from

hunger while the Fairy of mischievousness

provides eloquence, singing and laughter.

the Fairy of Bravery brings energy and

commanding temperament.

Before the lilac Fairy is able to give her

gift, the evil fairy Carabosse enters, furious

that she was not invited. in revenge she

bestows her “gift”. aurora will prick her finger

and die on her 16th birthday. the court is

horrified, but the lilac Fairy is able to soften

the spell. When aurora pricks her finger she will

sleep for one hundred years and be awakened

by the kiss of a handsome Prince.

le don qu’elle veut offrir à la princesse, la

méchante fée Carabosse arrive, furieuse de

n’avoir pas été invitée. Pour se venger, en guise

de « don », elle jette un sort à la princesse

– aurore se piquera le doigt et mourra le

jour de ses 16 ans. un sentiment d’horreur

saisit l’assemblée. Fort heureusement, la fée

des lilas parvient à atténuer le mauvais sort

– quand aurore se piquera le doigt, elle ne

mourra pas, mais sera plongée dans un profond

sommeil pendant cent ans et se réveillera

lorsqu’un beau prince viendra déposer sur ses

lèvres un baiser.

act i Princess Aurora’s Sixteenth Birthday

in celebration of Princess aurora’s sixteenth

birthday, young villagers dance a spirited

waltz. as the excitement mounts, aurora

enters the courtyard with delicate footsteps

and youthful eagerness. She is presented to

four princes, each seeks her hand in marriage.

aurora dances with each suitor, and they in

turn present her with a gift of roses in the

famous rose adagio.

Carabosse, disguised as an old woman,

arrives at the birthday celebration and gives

aurora a bouquet of flowers, which aurora

willingly accepts. hidden in the flowers is a

spindle; aurora pricks her finger on it and

collapses. Carabosse triumphantly reveals her

true identity. the lilac Fairy appears in the

garden and assures the court that aurora is not

dead, but will sleep until awakened by the kiss

of a handsome prince. aurora is carried into

the palace by the courtiers and the lilac Fairy

casts a spell over the entire court, causing

everybody to fall asleep and a thick forest to

grow around the palace.

act ii The Awakening

one hundred years later, Prince Désiré

becomes melancholic while hunting in the

forest and wishes to be alone. the lilac Fairy

visits him and learns that he is sad because

his heart is devoid of love. She tells him of the

enchanted palace and the beautiful sleeping

princess, and guides him through the thick

forest to the palace.

once inside, Prince Désiré discovers the

sleeping aurora and recognizing his true love,

kisses her. aurora awakens from her enchanted

pointu. aurore se pique le doigt et s’effondre.

triomphante, Carabosse révèle son identité. la

fée des lilas apparaît dans le jardin et assure

la cour qu’aurore n’est pas morte, qu’elle ne

fait que dormir et qu’elle se réveillera sous le

baiser d’un beau prince. les courtisans portent

aurore au palais et la fée des lilas prononce

un sortilège qui plonge toute la cour dans un

profond sommeil, tandis qu’une épaisse forêt

encercle tout le palais.

acte ii Le réveilCent ans plus tard, le prince Désiré et sa suite chassent dans la forêt. Soudain, le prince se sent tout morose et demande à son entourage de le laisser seul. C’est alors qu’apparaît la fée des lilas qui a deviné que son cœur éprouve un manque d’amour. elle lui parle d’un palais enchanté où vit une princesse endormie et le guide à travers l’épaisse forêt jusqu’au palais.

une fois à l’intérieur, le prince Désiré

découvre la belle aurore endormie, reconnaît

la princesse de ses rêves et l’embrasse. aurore

se réveille de son sommeil enchanté. le sort


sleep. the evil spell is destroyed and Carabosse

collapses, overpowered by goodness and

virtue. the entire court comes to life and the

King and Queen meet Prince Désiré and happily

approve his betrothal to their daughter, aurora.

act iii The Wedding of Aurora and Désiré

the scene opens with a glorious polonaise,

followed by fairy tale characters dancing

in homage to the newlywed couple. aurora

and Désiré then perform the grand Pas de

Deux after which the entire court dances an

exuberant mazurka bringing the celebrations

to a fitting climax.

Founded in 1939 by gweneth lloyd and Betty Farrally, the royal Winnipeg Ballet holds the double distinction of being Canada’s premier ballet company and one of the oldest ballet companies in north america. in 1953, the Company received its royal title, the first granted under the reign of Queen elizabeth ii. in 1958, arnold Spohr was appointed artistic director. under his direction the royal Winnipeg Ballet grew and developed to take its place among the world’s internationally-renowned companies. to further the Company’s development, a professional school was created in 1970 under the direction of David moroni. today two-thirds of the Company’s dancers are graduates of the rWB School. on march 7, 1996, andré lewis was named artistic director of Canada’s royal Winnipeg Ballet. a native of gatineau, Québec, mr. lewis has maintained a nearly thirty-seven year association with the rWB.

Canada’s royal Winnipeg Ballet began to tour Canada in 1945; it completed its first american tour in 1954. today, the company spends 15 or more weeks a year on the road, performing in centres large and small. the royal Winnipeg Ballet is compact in size, with 24 dancers, a production crew of seven and a semi-trailer that carries approximately 55,000 pounds of equipment. For full-length ballets, the royal Winnipeg Ballet travels with two

semi-trailers and an expanded company. the royal Winnipeg Ballet has performed in the united States, South america, europe, the middle east, russia, Japan, asia, mexico and in every province of Canada.

throughout its history, the royal Winnipeg Ballet has been a dance leader, recording innumerable firsts. it developed the concept of the regional ballet festival in the 1940s. it was the first Western company to perform in Cuba after the revolution. it received gold medals at the international Ballet Festival in Paris in 1968 and that same year became the first Canadian company to tour russia and Czechoslovakia.

the rWB opened its 73rd season in Winnipeg with the Canadian Premiere of twyla tharp’s The Princess & The Goblin, a co-production with atlanta Ballet. in December, the rWB shared its cherished Nutcracker with audiences in vancouver before helping Winnipeggers celebrate the holiday season with seven performances of the classic at home. the company will conclude the home season with Moulin Rouge® – The Ballet. For the first time since 2006, the rWB toured atlantic Canada in november with mixed repertoire performances in halifax, Fredericton, Charlottetown and Saint John. South of the border engagements include presenting Moulin Rouge® – The Ballet in Wisconsin, illinois, texas, louisiana, missouri, Kansas and South Dakota. in march and april, The Sleeping Beauty tours to Saskatoon, regina, Brandon, ottawa, Belleville, Kingston, mississauga, london and hamilton.

André LewisArtistic Director

approaching nearly 38 years with Canada’s royal Winnipeg Ballet, 17 of them as artistic director, andré lewis has spent the majority of his career with Canada’s first professional dance company. a native of gatineau, Québec, lewis began his dance training in ottawa before being accepted into the Professional Division of the royal Winnipeg Ballet School in 1975 and joined the rWB company in 1979 where he enjoyed an accomplished career as a dancer for over ten years.

in 1996, lewis was appointed artistic director of the royal Winnipeg Ballet after having served as associate artistic director for the previous five years and has been the driving force behind the new and innovative works that have dramatically rejuvenated the Company’s repertoire. in 1998 he commissioned mark godden’s blockbuster production Dracula and was instrumental in the 1999 creation of a new Nutcracker for the company. in 2002, lewis brought to Winnipeg the thrilling and passionate Carmina Burana by argentinean choreographer mauricio Wainrot and presented a new version of The Sleeping Beauty. in 2003, he commissioned mark godden to create a new ballet based on the opera The Magic Flute and in 2004 brought in choreographer val Caniparoli to create A Cinderella Story, a retro retelling of the beloved fairy tale set to jazz and swing. lewis commissioned choreographer and rWB alumnus Jorden morris to create Peter Pan for the company in 2006 and in 2009, for rWB’s 70th anniversary, lewis commissioned morris to create Moulin Rouge®– The Ballet after the famous Parisian cabaret, which set record attendance levels at every performance and is the highest grossing show in rWB’s history. lewis also recently commissioned mark godden to create Svengali, an explosive new

associé depuis bientôt 38 ans au royal Winnipeg Ballet du Canada, dont 17 ans à titre de directeur artistique, andré lewis a passé la majorité de sa carrière au sein de la première compagnie de danse professionnelle du Canada. originaire de gatineau (Québec), il commence sa formation de danseur à ottawa avant d’être accepté à la Division professionnelle de l’École du royal Winnipeg Ballet, en 1975. en 1979, il est invité à rejoindre les rangs de la compagnie du rWB où il fait une carrière de danseur accompli pendant plus de 10 ans.

in 2012, lewis and atlanta Ballet artistic Director John mcFall co-commissioned a new creation by celebrated choreographer twyla tharp titled The Princess & The Goblin, based on the children’s fantasy novel of the same name by victorian author george macDonald. the ballet had its World Premiere in atlanta in February 2012 and was met with high praise; with the new york times labeling it as “Enchanting and funny…” while the Wall Street Journal called the production “Inriguing and moving…”

in addition to his position as artistic director, lewis is a sought-after ballet instructor and has guest taught throughout europe and in Japan.

Shannon LovelaceCostume Designer

Winnipeg visual artist and costume designer Shannon lovelace received her training at the university of manitoba and Concordia university in montréal. in 1980 she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine arts. Since returning to Winnipeg in 1981 Shannon has exhibited her paintings extensively in north america and abroad. her paintings are currently represented by art mode gallery in ottawa.

in 1993 she began her association with the royal Winnipeg Ballet, working as milliner, decorator, dyer and designer. Moulin Rouge® – The Ballet was the third full length ballet

Shannon LovelaceConceptrice des costumes

Shannon lovelace, artiste en arts visuels et conceptrice de costumes de Winnipeg, a reçu sa formation à l’université du manitoba et à l’université Concordia de montréal. en 1980, elle obtient son baccalauréat en art et, depuis son retour à Winnipeg, elle présente ses toiles dans de nombreuses expositions en amérique du nord et à l’étranger. elle expose actuellement ses œuvres à l’art mode gallery, à ottawa.

Shannon has worked in the film industry as sketch artist, illustrator and costumer, but her real love remains in the world of dance. her life studies and portraits can be found in private and corporate collections including Wood gundy, KPmg llP, government offices and CP Calgary, alberta. She is a longtime member of mentoring artists for Women’s art.

Anne Armit Costume Designer

anne armit was born in St. andrews, Scotland and moved to ottawa at age four. She attended Seneca College in 1972, was named Student Designer of the year in 1975 and was awarded a scholarship to the ontario College of art.

after graduation, she worked for one year in the fashion industry before obtaining work as a seamstress at the St. lawrence Centre. armit also freelanced for organizations such as the national Ballet of Canada, Shaw Festival, Stratford Festival, Charlottetown Festival, the national arts Centre and the Canadian opera Company. a promotion to Junior Cutter at the St. lawrence Centre was followed by an offer of employment from the national Ballet of Canada.

From 1979 to 1989, armit ran her own business creating costumes for film, television and theatre, including the contract for Cats. throughout this period she worked extensively for the tv, film and commercial

designer. Michael EaganSet and Properties Designer

michael eagan has designed for major theatres across Canada including the Stratford and Shaw Festivals, the royal manitoba theatre Centre, Canadian Stage (toronto), neptune theatre (halifax) and the Centaur theatre (montréal). in new york, he designed Happy New Year on Broadway and has worked for the Juilliard School.

mr. eagan has worked extensively in musical theatre including productions at the royal alexandra theatre in toronto (Damn Yankees). For the lyric stage he conceived the décors for Manon de massenet at the vancouver opera, Les Contes d’Hoffmann for l’opéra de montréal and The Rake’s Progress for the Banff Festival. he also designed Gehenna for les grands Ballets Canadiens de montréal. From 1988 to 1998 he was Director of Scenography at the national theatre School in montreal.

Michael J. WhitfieldLighting Designer

michael J. Whitfield has an extensive background in lighting design for theatre, ballet and opera. a native of victoria, BC, mr. Whitfield received his training in theatre at the university of victoria, villanova university and the university of illinois. in 1974 he began a long association with the Stratford Festival, where he was for many years the resident lighting Designer and was responsible for the lighting design of a great variety of plays and musicals, including The Mikado, Amadeus and King Lear. he has worked extensively in Canadian regional theatre and his work is often seen at the royal manitoba theatre Centre.

mr. Whitfield is also much in demand as a lighting designer for opera and his designs have been featured at the San Francisco opera, San Diego opera Company, houston grand opera, the minnesota opera, the Dallas opera, the Welsh national opera and for Canadian companies in toronto, montréal, ottawa, hamilton, edmonton, Calgary, Banff and vancouver. his lighting has been featured at the Canadian opera Company for over 30 years where designs include Wozzeck and Madama Butterfly.

in the world of ballet, mr. Whitfield’s work has been represented by Alice and The Nutcracker at the national Ballet of Canada, The Merry Widow for the american Ballet theatre and Romeo & Juliet at the Finnish national Ballet. For Canada’s royal Winnipeg Ballet his lighting has also been seen in The Sleeping Beauty and Anne of Green Gables.
