Advice for candidatesSometimes people have acquired valuable skills in the course of their lives, which may not have been obtained in the classroom, yet which are relevant to the qualification they are seeking to obtain.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) recognises any prior knowledge and experience you may have in relation to the requirements of Certificate III in Aged Care, even if you have had no formal training in this area. You may not need to complete all (or any) of the training course if you already possess some or all of the skills required by the qualification. This RPL Assessment Tool Kit is designed to assist you to identify what skills you may already have, and to match them to the units of competency which make up the course.
The following units of competency are included in Certificate III in Aged Care Work. Note that not all units are required. If you decide to apply for RPL, your assessor will tell you which units you need.

How to use this RPL Assessment Tool KitThis RPL Assessment Tool Kit is divided into the following sections.
Section 1 – Self-evaluation checklists
The first step in the process is to complete Section 1 – Self-evaluation checklists. These checklists outline the skills and knowledge you need in order to competently carry out specific tasks required by the qualification. If, after completing Section 1, you think that you already possess the required skills for one or more units and that you may be able to obtain RPL for those units, contact your RTO to obtain and complete the rest of the RPL process.
Section 2 – Evidence gathering checklists
In this section you will begin to demonstrate how your previous experience and informal training might prove your competence. There will be suggestions for the types of evidence you could produce in support of your application.
Section 3 – Interview question bank and recording sheets
The interview question bank is the stage of the process, in which the Assessor and the candidate confirm the knowledge by discussing a series of questions.
Section 4 – Practical tasks and observation recording sheets
These tools are designed to guide the Assessor and candidate through a workplace observation, proving the candidate’s ability to conduct the specific tasks and skills required for recognition of competency in the particular area.
Section 5 – Third party reports and supporting evidence
The third party verification report is provided for referees, for example the supervisor, to confirm the candidate’s skills and experience in the qualification/occupation. It is important to note that third party reports are not always available and that assessors are recommended to use their professional judgement to determine if this is a requirement.
What evidence isEvidence is anything which can help demonstrate that you are able to competently carry out the activities covered by the elements. Evidence can be written, verbal or demonstrated. It can be photographs or videos. Suggestions of the type of evidence being sought are provided. Please note that these are suggestions only, and it is not essential that you provide all the suggested evidence. You may also have other types of evidence that are not listed. Whatever evidence you can provide will assist you with your RPL process, and some of your evidence may cover several units.
Gathering your evidenceEach unit of competency in Certificate III in Aged Care Work is broken down into ‘elements’ of competency. An element describes the key activities that must be performed in order to demonstrate competence in the tasks covered by the unit. For example, CHCAC1C Provide support to an older person consists of the following four elements of competency:
Element 1 – Demonstrate an understanding of the physical and psychosocial aspects of ageing
Element 2 – Establish and maintain appropriate relationships with older people
Element 3 – Assist the older person to identify and meet their needs

Element 4 – Respond to situations of risk to the older person within work role and responsibilities.
For each of the elements there are suggestions for evidence which you may be able to provide in support of your ability to perform the tasks required.
It is important to remove all reference to client details when submitting evidence, and to obtain permission when using an organisation’s forms or documents.
However, lack of documentary evidence to support your industry experience is not a barrier to your gaining RPL. You will have the opportunity to provide verbal evidence during a conversation with your assessor, who will also discuss with you alternative ways of demonstrating your competence.
Evidence checklist
There are certain types of evidence which may indicate your skills across a number of units, and the following checklist will get you started. As previously stated, this is a guide only. You do not require all items on the list.

When you have completed the checklist and gathered some general forms of evidence, work through each of the units and see if you have any other forms of evidence to support your application for RPL. When you have completed the relevant items in this section, contact your lecturer/tutor to arrange an appointment to meet with an assessor, who will advise and assist you through the remainder of the RPL process.

How to use the evidence gathering checklistsIn this section you will begin to demonstrate how your previous experience and informal training might prove your competence. There are suggestions for the types of evidence you could produce in support of your application.
Each unit of competency in Certificate III in Aged Care Work is broken down into ‘elements’ of competency. For example, CHCAC1C Provide support to an older person consists of the following four elements of competency:
Element 1 – Demonstrate an understanding of the physical and psychosocial aspects of ageing
Element 2 – Establish and maintain appropriate relationships with older people
Element 3 – Assist the older person to identify and meet their needs
Element 4 – Respond to situations of risk to the older person within work role and responsibilities.
For each of the elements there are suggestions for evidence which you may be able to provide in support of your ability to perform the tasks required.
It is important to provide as much evidence as you can at this stage. Don’t feel that you have to provide all the evidence. It is a guide only. You may also have other types of evidence that are not listed. In many cases, one piece of evidence, eg your job description can be used across a range of units. Although only two or three pieces of evidence are needed for each element, collect as much as you can and your RPL assessor will determine how best it can be used.
However, remember that lack of documentary evidence to support your industry experience is not a barrier to your gaining RPL.
You will have the opportunity to provide verbal evidence during a conversation with your assessor, who will also discuss with you alternative ways of demonstrating your competence.
It is important to remove all reference to client details when submitting evidence, and to obtain permission when using an organisation’s forms or documents.
