Can you believe it’s been a decade since we opened our doors! More than 1.5 million children and adults have enjoyed our educational exhibits and programs, including 200,000 participants in free admission and outreach initiatives that helped make the Museum accessible for all children and families in our community. Museum membership has almost quadrupled since the early days, as increasing numbers of parents recognize the educational value of our environment and the impact of play on a child’s success in school – and for a lifetime. Just like any ten-year-old, we’ve learned some important lessons about patience, practice and persistence…we’ve figured out that everybody needs good friends…we understand that money doesn’t grow on trees (although we think that would make a very cool exhibit)…and, we’re thinking hard about what we want to be when we grow up. We know there are many challenges ahead, but we are full of energy and optimism, and we have tons of great ideas! We want to take this opportunity to extend our deepest appreciation to everyone who helped us come this far – our volunteers, supporters and community partners. We couldn’t have done it without your vision and confidence in our mission to promote the healthy development of children in their formative years. As we mark our tenth year, we are pleased to highlight our most recent accomplishments in this 2004 Annual Report. We’re ready to blow out the candles on our cake and make our wish – that the chil- dren of Southeastern Wisconsin will always have the Betty Brinn Children's Museum. Happy Birthday to us! Jewel-Osco Neighborhood Night, our program offering free admission one evening each month, was a huge success in 2004, with participation up more than 40%. The program included Partners in Community Education, a free speaker series developed in collaboration with the Children’s Health Education Center and the Small Stones Health Resource Center of Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin. The series offered in-service credit from The Registry, Wisconsin’s recognition system for childcare and education professionals, and provided parents with guidance on a variety of topics, including injury prevention, preparing siblings for a new baby and bullying. Our visitors voted with their feet! Almost 150,000 children and adults enjoyed the Museum during 2004, and Museum membership rose an astounding 26% - a new record! We were proud to be selected (for the 3rd consecutive year!) by Shepherd Express readers as Milwaukee’s best resource for families with young children. In May, two outstanding educators, elementary teacher Susan Moore of Eisenhower Elementary School in Wauwatosa, and early childhood educator Lisa M. Randerson of Neighborhood House of Milwaukee, Inc., were awarded the Museum’s 2004 Alice Bertschy Kadish Teacher of the Year Award. The award was created in 1996 as a tribute to Alice Bertshy Kadish, a Milwaukee teacher and cherished Museum supporter who was dedicated to excellence in early childhood education. The award is endorsed by the Wisconsin Education Association Council and the Wisconsin Early Childhood Association. Almost 70,000 children and adults participated in Museum programs and events during the year, including our ever-popular Tot Time, Krafty Kids, Puppet Play and Storytime. Our annual Not-So- Scary Halloween presented by Jewel-Osco drew more than 3,500 trick-or-treaters, and our Little Monster Bash was a sell-out with more than 600 ghosts and goblins joining in the fun. More than 1,600 children and adults enjoyed our annual Valentine’s Day activities, the Little Sweetheart Dinner Dance – a perfect opportunity for little valentines and grown-ups to get dressed in their party best – and the Kemps Valentine Ice Cream Social presented by Jewel-Osco. More than 700 children and caregiversparticipated in our Back-to-SchoolResource Fair held in August. Theevent provided information, experi-ences and activities designed to helpchildren get ready to return to schoolor prepare to attend school for the firsttime. Partnering organizations includ-ed Prevent Blindness WI, MilwaukeePublic Schools (MPS), La Causa,Milwaukee Bureau of Public Health,Children’s Health Education Center, and the Milwaukee Public Library.Attendees received free school suppliesand books, and were able to meetwith Assistant State SuperintendentRichard Grobschmidt and MPSSuperintendent William Andrekopoulos. The event also featured tours of a realLakeside School Bus!

Thanks to generous communitysupport in 2004, the Museumwas able to enroll almost 500families in Family Focus. Thishighly successful programprovides parenting information, free membership andtransportation subsidies tofamilies who might otherwise beunable to benefit from theMuseum experience. In additionto helping low-income families, families with a disabled child orparent and foster families, new partnerships with Lady PittsHigh School and the Milwaukee Fatherhood Collaborativehelped us expand service to teen and single parents.Almost 17,000 disadvantaged children and adultsbenefited from Family Focus and other free admissionprograms in 2004, helping keep the Museum accessiblefor everyone in our community.

Congratulations to the Museum’sKids Advisory Board for doing aterrific job hosting our annual ABCGarden event, held in June. Morethan 400 visitors enjoyed pottingplants with names that ranged fromArtemisia to Zinnia! A specialthank you to Milwaukee CountyParks for donating the plants,Boerner Botanical Gardens forproviding a special program for ourlittle gardeners, and to UW-Extension staff for helping with ABCGarden maintenance.

Thanks to outstanding volunteer leadership and thegenerosity of the Milwaukee community, the Museum met its2004 Annual Campaign goal, raising more than$700,000 to support Museum exhibits, programs andoperations. Our campaign began with an extraordinarilygenerous gift from Debra Altshul-Starkand Brian Stark, a couple whosecontributions of time, talent andpersonal resources have profoundlyinfluenced the Museum's progress sinceits inception. Thanks to theirremarkable commitment, we are poisedto develop initiatives that will help usbecome more self-sufficient over time, ensuring our capacity to meet the needsof our diverse and growing audience foryears to come.

Other 2004 campaign highlightsincluded major gifts from PotawatomiBingo Casino’s Miracle on Canal Streetprogram and the Helen BaderFoundation, as well as a commitmentfrom the Northwestern MutualFoundation to sponsor the nationally-acclaimed touring exhibit, Adventureswith Clifford The Big Red Dog, in spring2005. In addition to these generousgifts, we were thrilled to receivesignificant pledges from the FleckFoundation and the Greater Milwaukee Foundation tosupport It’s Artastic!, our new feature exhibit (opening in2006) that will help young children explore the visual, language and performing arts. Our successful fundraisingefforts enabled us to qualify for a $50,000 matching giftfrom a local foundation, providing critical unrestrictedsupport for Museum operations.

Almost 500 guests who attended ourJuly 3rd Family Fireworks event wereamong the first to enjoy excitingchanges to one of our most popularfeature exhibits, A Trading Place. Theevent marked the debut of our newConcours Saab Super ServiceCenter, made possible by a generousgift from Concours Motors Saab, withadditional support from Snap-on. Littlemechanics enjoyed tinkering under thehood of a pretend Saab sedan, changing the tires and muffler, andfilling orders at the Service Desk. Thanks to a gift from Museum membersColin and Colleen Hutt, visitors werealso able to “ship” pretend auto parts usinga real working industrial hoist. Kids (andparents!) had fun climbing into the cab andworking the controls to lift, move and lowercargo at the new Shipping Dock. Thesewonderful additions have quickly becomevisitor favorites!

Thanks to the generosity of theNorthwestern Mutual Foundation, almost 57,000 visitors enjoyed ourspecial exhibition of Mother GooseMath: Rhyme and Arithmetic(January 17 - May 15, 2004).London Bridge, Humpty Dumpty’sWall and the King’s Counting Housewere among the fanciful venues thathelped children learn about basicmath skills. The exhibit “added up”to lots of fun, as visitors practicedmatching, sorting, counting,

sequencing, andmeasuring. Kids even hada chance to create ablackbird pie graph! Theexhibit provided a perfecttheme for our spring event,Mother Goose Tea,complete with MotherGoose’s famous tarts, hot-cross buns, and nurseryrhyme inspired activities.

The success of our annualfundraising Gala in 2003 was atough act to follow, but ourtalented and dedicatedvolunteers outdid themselves(again!) with Gala 2004: ALantern Dance. This black-tieevent was the hit of the season, offering a sumptuous dinner, incredible ambiance, a fantasticauction, and plenty of fun on thedance floor! The event raisedmore than $136,000 to support

the Museum’s exhibits and programs, andhelped raise community awareness of oureducational mission.

We were pleased to welcomemore than 20,000 childrenand adults who visited theMuseum during 2004 as partof a field trip coordinatedthrough their school, day careor community organization.Participation in specialprograms for visiting groupsmore than tripled during 2004,allowing thousands of childrento explore selected topics ingreater detail, and helpingarea educators meet specificstate academic standards.
