SUSTAINABLE BUILDINGS AND CONSTRUCTION
Accounts for 40% of global energy use leading to 30% of energy-related GHG emissions - energy efficiency investments in the buildings sector increase steadily, by 12% in 2016
Produces nearly 40% of waste - the amount of waste can be reduced and waste, even from the other industries, can be successfully re-used in the built environment
The sector employs 10% of the workforce - clean technologies provide an increasing amount of jobs globally, including SMEs, all genders and the youth!
“Adopting circular economy principles could significantly enhance global construction industry productivity, saving at least US$ 100 bn a year” - World Economic Forum, 2016

Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3): Innovation
CIRCULAR ECONOMY EXAMPLES FROM INDIA
• LC3 uses a binary blend of non-commercial grade china clay and low-grade waste limestone to replace around 50% of clinker, the most energy and resource intensive component in cement
• It can reduce CO2 emissions up to 30% and save up to 50% virgin limestone as compared to conventional cement
Construction and Demolition Waste: Closing the Loop
Foundry Waste in Building Materials
• 90% of C&D waste can be used in productive and profitable applications to replace natural stone and sand in structural and non-structural applications
• Studies show 21% saving of CO2 as compared to natural stone processing and products made with C&D are 10%-20% cheaper
• Slag-based building materials are 7% cheaper than building materials made with natural aggregates
• Technical support to the local entrepreneurs in the study region led to the setting up of 15 new enterprises in the region

Circular Economy solutions for tourism sectorExample of success stories
The handbook “Destination: A circular tourism economy” – Center for Regional and Tourism Research in Denmark (CRT)
108
• Theoretical background of circular economy as a new paradigm and an alternative to the tourism sector’s traditional linear model
• Good practices among tourism SMEs on circular economy approaches and solutions (based on an experience in South Baltic Sea area)
Hotel Verde to implement a “zero waste to landfill” – JG AFRIKA
Applying circular economy practices to optimize environmental performance in hotel
• Offer carbon-neutral accommodations and conferencing facilities
• Implement a comprehensive range of interventions: energy-saving heating systems, grey water recycling measures and green building certifications
• Provide the Hotel control over the potential waste through an informed procurement process (an “Operational Materials Management Plan”)

• Application of technologies and innovation to accelerate the move to circular SCP patterns
• Opportunities to replicate and implement best practices across tourism transversal value chain and its interlinkages with other economic activities, both at production and consumption sides
• Strengthening monitoring of “SCP impact areas” (i.e. waste reduction) and constant rethinking and optimizing of performance (i.e. use of plastic, food waste)
Actions needed to further strengthen circularity in tourism
THE WAY FORWARD FOR TOURISM
