Canadian Culture • Since the 1980’s Vancouver has become known as the
Hollywood North. Science ficAon has become successful since the mid-‐1990’s with such shows as The X-‐Files, Stargate SG-‐1, The new BaKlestar GalacAca,
Smallville and The Outer Limits.
• Canadian humor is also part of the Canadian idenAty. Among the most successful have been Jim Carrey, John Candy, Mike Myers, Rick Mercer, Seth Rogen, MarAn Short, Eugene Levy, Howie Mandel, Dan Aykroyd and Leslie Nielsen. SaAre is the primary characterisAc of Canadian humor.
• Ice hockey is Canada’s official winter sport. It is the most popular spectator sport and is its most successful sport in the internaAonal compeAAon. Canada had won the Gold medal in the 2010 Winter Olympics in ice hockey. Canadian Football is the second most popular spectator sport.
• The Calgary Stampede is an annual rodeo that began in 1912. Held every July, it is a 10-‐day event held in Calgary, Alberta and bills itself as “The Biggest Outdoor Show on Earth”. AKendance in 2011 topped 1.1 million people.
• The Cuisine varies widely by region. English Canada is closely related to BriAsh and American cuisine while tradiAonal cuisine of French Canada evolved from the French and the winter provisions of Fur traders. These include baked goods, wild game and gathered foods. PouAne is a dish from Quebec consisAng of fries, curds and gravy.
• Jiggs Dinner from Nova ScoAa is a meal of beef, cabbage, salt, papri (deep fried dough wafers) and pease pudding (like hummus). The western provinces is heavily influenced by Italian, BriAsh, German, Ukrainian, Polish and Scandinavian cuisine.
