    Committee,task force to

    consider honorcode, improveintramurals

    Kelly DicKersonNews Editor

A committee to discuss thepossibility of introducing an hon-or code and a task force to revampthe intramural program have both

been formed as a result of the Stu-dent Life Council meeting Jan. 26.

The Honor Code Explora-tion Committee will be meetingthroughout the semester and willdeliver a preliminary report byApril 26.

Assistant Dean of StudentsJulie Bumpus said the committeewill largely be used for research-ing what an honor code would in-volve and what it would mean forBerry. The committee will meetfor the rst time Feb. 9.

Bumpus said the addition ofan honor code could directly af-fect prospective students and fac-ultys decision to come to Berry.

SGA Vice President of Cam-pus Services Jacob Stubbs said the

committee wants to keep studentsinvolved with the conversation.Since a student, [freshman]

Ben Riggs, was the rst to bring

it up at the meeting we denitelywant to keep students involved inthe process, Stubbs said.

Stubbs said the goal for thecommittee is to have every gradu-ation year represented and everyschool represented.

Down the road we will prob-ably be looking for ways to get

more students involved, throughthings like student panels and fo-cus groups, Stubbs said.

Dean of Students Debbie Hei-da issued a charge to the HonorCode Exploration Committee toexplore both student and facultyinterest in an honor code and ex-plore possible honor code modelsthat would work specically forBerry.

Bumpus said Berry does havean Academic Integrity and In-volvement and Procedure but noformal honor code. According tothe International Center for Aca-demic Integrity, there are threedivisions of honor code types a

    college or university can have.

On Monday the Career Cen-ter hosted an event open to allstudents to learn how to take ad-vantage of social media websiteswhile searching for employment.

President and CEO of SAI Dig-ital, Berry Alumni Tricia Steele Se-ifert was the guest speaker lead-

ing the workshop.Seifert said a digital resume

should be utilized. She suggestedthe website linkedin.com, whichallows students to be profession-ally connected in social media topotential employers. Linkedinprovides many options for jobseekers such as posting a resume, uploading a prole picture, con-necting a personal blog, display-ing a personal reading list andslideshare.

Seifert said linking a personalblog that is on a topic relating toa desired job industry can helpset a prospective employee apartfor future employers. This would

show that there is interest in theeld as a whole and not just sim-ply in nding a job. Also, openlyposting a personal reading listcan be benecial so employerscan see what books one is read-ing related to the eld of work tofurther knowledge in addition topleasure readings.

Slideshare is an alternate toMicrosoft power point but moreideal. If one has given a presenta-tion that would help make themmore sought after as an employee, then slideshare can be used to up-load a power point but the formatis universal and does not have to

    be compatible with any certain

type of computer or version. Thisavoids issues of a power point notopening correctly or not convert-ing from the original document.

Seifert said another option wasa very recent website, resume-

bear.com, which has only beenactive approximately a month butis promising. Similar to linkedin, resumebear also allows posting aresume but what sets this websiteapart is that it tracks behavior.Users who have posted a resumewill receive notications whenemployers have reviewed it andspecically which areas.

Senior Jordan Hester said hedid not realize how benecialTwitter would potentially be

in the work force prior to theworkshop.

The Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellowsprogram invites successful authors, journal-ists and other professionals from all over thecountry to spend a week at Berry. This week,award-winning environmental journalist andauthor of Grave Matters: A Journey Throughthe Modern Funeral Industry to a Natural Wayof Burial, Mark Harris is on campus to speakto classes, give interviews and host lectures. On Feb. 2 Harris spoke on the green burialmovement, and Thursday he will lecture oncemore on shifting notions of home and familyin our modern culture. Harris will be on cam-pus until Feb. 10.

Q: One of your lectures is centered on theidea of a green burial. Can you explain in anutshell the consequences of whats acceptedas the traditional burial. What harm is thatdoing, and what are some of the benets of a

    more natural burial?

A: First of all, what is modern burial? Thenwe can talk about what the natural burial is.

So modern burial, what you would get ifyou go to a funeral home and pretty muchwhats on offer, is embalming of the body (withembalming chemicals that contain a formalde-hyde based solution that is both a hazardoussubstance and something that causes cancer). So modern burial, funeral home burial: em-

balming of the remains, body placed in a metalcasket (metal is obviously not biodegradable).

Then that embalmed, casketed body is placedin a burial vault, which is a concrete box thatsput in the bottom of the grave. The casket islowered into the burial vault and a concretetop is put on top.

If you take a ten-acre swath ofany cemetery ground, in that tenacres we have buried enough cof-n wood on average to rebuildforty houses and then anotherthousand tons of concrete. Everyyear we divert enough concreteto the production of those burialvaults to build a two lane high-way halfway across the country, and every year we divert enoughmetal to the production of thosemetal caskets and the lining ofsome of those burial vaults tocompletely rebuild the GoldenGate Bridge. And thats all to putsomebody in the ground, andthose strategies are only tempo-rary preservation strategies.

Q: The idea is that wereusing a lot of stuff (a lot of non-

biodegradable and potentiallyharmful stuff) to essentially donothing?

A: The body will, in someform, eventually decay. Butembalming does accomplishtwo important things. It doespreserve remains for the tempo-rary purpose of having the wakeand the open casket funeral, and

it also does return the body to alifelike state. And that is whatthe funeral director works veryhard to achieve. That is whatthey call a pleasant memorypicture. Its the picture of thedeceased that youre going totake away when you walk outof the funeral parlor, and its onethat they believe is going to bevery comforting.

Ive argued that the UnitedStates and Canada are the onlytwo countries on the planet thatroutinely embalm their dead, and yet all these other countriesare able to look at their deceasedthat have not been embalmedand process their grief just aswell as we do. So I think we goto all this expense, all this trou-

ble for the purposes of creatinga false image that I dont think

benets us.Ive argued, why not just let

Mother Nature take her naturalcourse? And then when you

bury that body youre able to

return them to the earth in a nat-ural state, and then they rejointhe elements, they push up atree, they become this naturalfertilizer. Thats something tocelebrate, and its not somethingto be afraid of.

Q: You seem to give a lot ofattention to the nobility behindit, how maybe in a less tangiblesense it is just as good, if not a

better way to conduct burial and

to look at the end of life.

A: I dont try to bang peopleover the head saying Do this because its so much better forthe earth, or its so much bet-ter for your pocketbook. But Ithink its a way of honoring thedead; of celebrating ones life.In our culture death is seen as adefeat; we live our lives in a lin-ear fashion: youre born, you live, and you die, end point. Whatnatural burial is really arguingis that youre born, you live your

life, you die, youre buried, youreturn to the natural cycle of life, and through your simple bodyyoure able to renourish theearth, youre able to push up atree, and because youve pushedup this tree, youre able to createoxygen, and because theres oxy-gen people are able to live. Andso in that way, you dont everreally die; a part of you lives on.A part of you is joined up intothis great cycle of life, and thenin fact death is not an end point,

its just another part of the cycle.Birth. Death. Regeneration.Renewal. To me that seems a lotless scary, and its a lot more cel-ebratory. Death is always aboutlosing something, and thatshard. But to return somebodyto the earth in a way that makesthem continue to live on, I think,is a celebration of ones life.

    Culture of Kissing

    a

In Costa Rica, it is cus-tomary to greet with onlyone kiss on the cheek, butmen are expected to shake

    hands.

In Ghana nopublic affection isacceptable includ-ing holding hands.

Only found in theDemocratic Republic ofCongo, Bonobo monkeyskiss passionately on the

    lips.

    DiD you Know...a

People exchange between 10 millionand 1 billion bacteria when kissing, Sobefore you pucker up, you may wantto make sure your partner brushesregularly.

    hhhhh

gBefore deciding what type of goodnight kiss suits your mood, keep inmind that a typical pucker kiss onlyinvolves two of the muscles in yourface while a french kiss involves all34 muscles.

The film with the most kisses is"Don Juan"during which starsJohn Barrymore and Mary Astor

    share 127 kisses.

Passionate kissing can burn up to 6.4calories a minute. Can kissing counttowards your News Year's resolution

of working out? We think so.

The science of kissing is namedphilematology.

The world record for kissingoccurred on July 5, 2005

when a couple locked lips for 31hours, 30 minutes, 30 seconds.

    aa

In Vietnam, spousesdo not kiss eachother outside theirhome or in front oftheir children.

The Inuit practice the"Eskimo Kiss" by rubbingnoses and inhaling each

    others breath.

In India, publicdisplay of affection, including kissing, isa criminal offense.

In France, cheek kissing, called "Faire La Bise," iscustom but the number ofkisses varies depending onwhat part of the country

    you're in.

In Russia, it is traditionfor political leaders to kiss onthe lips when they meet.

The act of kissing is an ancient human interaction that was first studied by natural historian, Ernest Crawley,in the early 20th century. The "meaning" of kissing varies from culture to culture. In some places, it is simply agreeting tradition, while other cultures use kisses as displays of intimacy and affection. So next time your terrible datehits that awkward silence moment and you're looking to bail quickly just apologize and claim that you are practicingGhana traditions, where kissing doesn't even exist.

In Somalia, the actof kissing is un-

    known and thereforenever practiced.

In Malaysia, kissingan elder's hand is ashow of respect.

Ever dreamed about the perfect kiss only to experience the worst one ever? After all, every detail of our love life can't alwaysbe like the stories we see in the movies. Here are some kissing horror stories that happened-or didn't happen when they shouldhave-that Berry students shared with us. Sometimes when the experiences are this bad, you just have to tell.

I had been going out with a guy for a few months and we hadbecome very comfortable with one another. So, on his birthdaywe were sitting in his backyard on a blanket a little after thesun had gone down, and he goes in for a kiss. Right as we aregetting into it, we hear a little rustling in the grass. We ignore it

and keep smooching. I put my hand down on the ground and feelsomething soft and fuzzy. I look down and there is a raccoonwho is no doubt as big as a small dog. He blinks up at me andbefore I can scream, the little bugger bites my current boyfriendon the hand, makes some weird Perry the Platypus noise and runsoff. I spent the rest of the night in the emergency room while hegot a series of rabies shots. Happy Birthday, honey

    -Bailey Merlin, Freshman

Mine happened when I was four. The girls mom was drying her laundryand she hung white sheets outside todry. We were in between the hangingsheets when we kissed. Right after-wards my mom immediately called me,like she knew.

    -Benson Phinazee, Junior

It was New Years Eve and theball was about to drop. This guycomes up to me and says Wouldyou like to be my New Years Evekiss? I paused and he took mysilence as a sign that I didnt wantto and then proceeded to say Dontworry, I wont tell my fianc.

    -Sarah Yeakel, Sophomore

This basically was my first kiss. Itwas the 4th of July and I had justgone to a concert with a friend from awork internship. Said friend was incrediblydrunk and insisted on staying at my house.I set an alarm to get up in the morningand when I turned around, I was metwith the wettest, sloppiest kiss I haveever received.

    -Dakota Floyd, Senior

We were in a tree and it started

snowing. He went in for a kissand I turned around and acciden-tally punched him in the nose.

    -Adrianna Beavers, Junior

Basically during freshman year my firstyear mentor had a crush on me and shedidnt want to have one because she had aboyfriend. She said Kyle, kiss me and therewont be a spark and Ill go back to myboyfriend. I said This is the dumbest ideaIve ever heard. Long story short, she endedup on top of me saying Kyle, just say yes!and that was my first kiss.

    -Kyle Stapleton, Junior

He never kissed anyone beforeand he had only watched movies sohis mouth was open the whole time.He kept sucking my face into hismouth. Afterwards he said 'Thatwas really great, wasnt it?'

    -Naysia Humphrey, Junior

Everyone sits in a circle alternating boy, girl, boy, girl. One person spins the bottle. When the bottlecomes to a complete stop, whoever the neck of thebottle is pointing to has to kiss the spinner.

Everyone writes their name on a piece of paper. All thegirls names go into one hat and all the boy's names gointo another. Draw one name from each hat. That girland that boy then must go into the closet for sevenminutes, what happens from there is up to you.
