Hydration Packs

The hydration pack is an internal water pouch and tube dispenser. – The main advantage is the ability to get a drink

whenever you want, without taking off your pack, and they generally carry large volumes of water easier. This is a good source of water also!

Helpful Hints

• To determine the size of pack you will need, is by the amount of gear you will be carrying

Clothing for the Appalachian Trail

Page 10: Camping Project

The Main idea:

Hope for the best weather, pack for the worst. Clothing to protect you from cold and rain is a must, even in midsummer

and especially at higher elevations. Avoid cotton clothes, particularly in

chilly, rainy weather, which can strike the mountains at any time of year. Wet cotton can be worse than nothing and

can contribute to hypothermia, a potentially fatal threat.

SHELTERS: Michelle Papp & Tara Manzz• Shelters are important as a means of escaping weather

conditions, meeting and getting to know fellow hikers, and discouraging negative hiker impact on their environment along the trail

• Shelters are located along the trail at varying intervals, often within close proximity to water sources and campsites

• They are filled at a first-come first-serve basis, and are meant for individual hikers, rather than large groups

• The most popular type of shelter is called a “lean-to,” usually wooden with a shingled or metal roof and one side open to the elements

• They are often crowded, grimy, and hosts to local insects and rodents

• Voluntary effort is required to maintain these shelters• Some larger shelters, called huts, provide meals to thru-

hikers, but these accommodations are often accompanied by work-for-stay policies, which temporarily hire hikers as chefs, janitors, and the like for the term of their stay (usually limited to two nights)

Page 14: Camping Project
Page 15: Camping Project

CAMPING• Tentsites are usually located near a water source, and

exist as an area of flat, cleared land• Tentsites are located at designated areas along the trail• Some campsites have tent platforms or pads where

free-standing tents can be pitched• Some tentsites are more costly to maintain and

therefore cost around $8 to be utilized• Dispersed camping is the choice of camping space• Dispersed camping is only permitted in certain areas

along the trail, mainly the national forests of the Virginias and the southern Appalachians

• Dispersed campers must be sure to minimize their impact on the areas they choose

Page 16: Camping Project
Page 17: Camping Project

HOSTELS

• Hostels provide budget oriented, sociable accommodation where guests can rent a bed, usually a bunk bed, in a dormitory and share a bathroom, lounge and sometimes a kitchen

• Hostel International and independent hostels are often located along the trail for hikers

• Some hostels insist on a curfew, daytime lockouts, and/or require occupants to do chores

• Many ordinary hotels do not allow the occupancy of thru-hikers, thus hostels have become the cheaper, more convenient alternative
