Camperdown College has been very
fortunate to play host to several visitors
from far afield over this past fortnight.
Through our participation in the Australia–
Indonesia BRIDGE program, we have
hosted two visiting teachers from the
school SMPN 2 Leuwisadeng. Pak Dian is
the Assistant Principal and teacher of Humanities and Pak
Janwar is a teacher of Indonesian. It has been very
interesting discussing similarities and differences between
the education systems of our two countries and we are
appreciative of the new perspectives and cultural practices
that Dian and Janwar have shared with us, as well as the
interest that they have shown in our school. Sincere thanks
must go to our own Indonesian teacher Jenna French for her
ongoing efforts to provide such a rigorous and engaging
language program for our students. The relationships that
have been forged through the BRIDGE program will be of
great value in planning for our first student visit to
Indonesia in 2015.
This week, our Senior Campus students and staff also
enjoyed meeting Hiroko and Kazuki, the parents of our
Year 11 Rotary Japanese exchange student Kana. Kana's
parents had flown to Australia for a five day visit, meeting
Kana's host families, teachers, friends, Camperdown
Rotarians and others from within and beyond the school
community who have contributed to the success of Kana's
stay. Kana has been an active and valued member of the
Camperdown College community and will be missed when
she returns to Japan at the end of this term after a twelve
month stay.
All families should have received a letter of invitation to
the upcoming parent feedback forums. As previously
advised, 2014 is a year of review for Camperdown College
and we are presently engaged in a thorough exploration of
our achievements over the past four years. This process
formally commenced this week with a staff/School Council
forum at which we closely examined the learning outcomes
and progress of our students as they have moved through
the school.
Some key findings will be shared as discussion points at
the parent forums, along with school data relating to
student engagement and wellbeing. The aim of the parent
forums is to ensure that we are hearing from our families
as we endeavour to further understand our strengths and
weaknesses and plan for ongoing improvement. Please
consider coming along to either the evening forum on
Wednesday 11th
June or the afternoon forum on Friday
13th
June. We look forward to hearing a range of different
views and perspectives.
A final forum the following week will capture the ideas
and experiences of our students. All of this feedback will
assist us to reflect fairly and constructively on the work of
the past four years and shape the future directions of the
school.
Our Year 6 students will have their next visit to the Senior
Campus on Wednesday 18th
June, spending time with
Design and Technology teacher Mr Ben McKenzie and
Geography teacher Mrs Suzanne Charles. Both of these
curriculum areas are very popular choices with our Senior
Campus students, with foundations laid in Year 7 leading
to rewarding and successful pathways right throughout
school to Year 12 and beyond.
The Senior Campus Expo takes place in the first week of
next term, providing an opportunity for students and their
parents to visit the full range of classrooms and talk
directly to staff and students about all aspects of the
secondary school experience. Whilst Year 5 and 6 students
and families in particular are encouraged to attend, this
annual event is open to any interested members of the
school and wider community. With the Senior Campus
refurbishments almost complete, you are welcome to take
advantage of this opportunity to have a good look around
and appreciate the many changes that have occurred in
recent times.

Year 7 – 12 Cross Country:
Congratulations to all students who participated in our House Cross Country last week. It was certainly pleasing to
see an increase in the number of students running in this event and giving their best effort. Well done to Jackson
Coates who went on to win the interschool event on Monday.
Cultural Performance:
This week, our Year 7 – 10 students were entertained by the performance The Hurting Games which highlighted the
issues surrounding bullying, focussing on cyber bullying. Cultural performances are certainly an effective way to
reinforce the key messages about using social media safely and I hope that all students took away a key message about looking after
themselves.
Year 9:
The Year 9 students spent three days last week on the Rail Trail in mostly sunny conditions. This was their practice trip for the Bronze
Duke of Edinburgh Award. They volunteered their time and efforts helping the Rail Trail committee carry out work at the Glenfyne
Hall. Our BRICKs leaders were involved in a Leadership Day on Wednesday at the Five Star Function Centre with other Corangamite
students and on Friday, Year 9 students will travel to South West TAFE at Sherwood Park for the Try a Career Day.
VCAL:
The VCAL students have said goodbye to their calves who were returned, bigger and fatter, back to their farm on Tuesday. Thank you
to Adam and Natalie Roberts for donating the calves for the Cows Create Careers Program. The shelter on the Rail Trail is
progressing well and should be finished in the next couple of weeks.
School Uniform:
There are still a small number of students who are not in correct winter uniform. It is expected that all students be in full uniform,
including woollen navy blue jumpers, leather shoes and winter skirts for girls. Scarves can be worn but must be navy blue. The sports
jacket is only to be worn outside over regular uniform. It is vital that parents contact us if there are concerns over the purchase of new
uniform items.
Keys Please:
Year 10 students participated in the pre driver program Keys Please today with Peter Gstrein from Vic Roads. This is an incredibly
valuable program in preparing students for obtaining their L and P plates and being responsible road users.
Suzanne Maskell, Acting Senior Campus Assistant Principal
Education Week:
What a busy and exciting week we had during Education Week last week! There was a range of activities that
included an open morning, Teddy Bears Hospital visit, National Simultaneous Storytime, as well as a special dress
up day for our Big Write topic Superheroes. We welcomed many parents and community members into the school
for these special events and staff and students were proud to share some of the learning experiences on offer at
Camperdown College.
Year 3 – 6 District Cross Country:
Congratulations to Ms Duynhoven and all of the runners who competed at the District Cross Country Carnival in Noorat last week
and also to Jack Helmore, Riley Helmore and Harry Sumner who competed at the Division Cross Country Carnival in Warrnambool
yesterday. Well done to Jack who came second with a time of 11.44 minutes for his 3 kilometre race, which is a fantastic effort. He
has now qualified for the Regional Cross Country in Hamilton in June.
Special Assembly:
We hope to see many parents at our special assembly tomorrow, starting at 2.15pm, to farewell Pak Dian and Pak Janwar. The
Indonesian teachers have spent the past two weeks at Camperdown College as part of the BRIDGE program which has provided a
wonderful opportunity for our students to learn more about Indonesia. At the assembly, students will be presenting dances and songs
that they have learnt during the visit.
Mobile Phones:
Students are not permitted to bring mobile phones to the Junior Campus under any circumstances. Please contact the Junior Campus
Office if you have questions or concerns about this policy.
Lunch Boxes:
We have a policy of no rubbish in the yard which means that students must put all disposable wrapping and containers into a bin
before they are allowed to play. This helps to keep our grounds tidy as well as protecting the environment. Parents can help by
providing foods for school that are not packaged in disposable wrappers.
Year 4 Leadership Day:
Our Year 4 students experienced an interesting and enjoyable day yesterday at the Gnurad-Gundidj Campus of the School for Student
Leadership in Glenormiston. The Year 9 students at the Leadership School conducted a range of activities designed to teach our
students more about the local area. We are grateful to the School for Student Leadership for providing us with this opportunity.

distance run which incorporated various parts of the
showgrounds and surrounding areas and ranged in distances
from 700 metres through to 3 kilometres. We are also proud
of the way that our students supported and encouraged each
other during the days’ events, well done! The race champions
on the day were as follows:

Education Week 2014 was celebrated by students at Camperdown College
with a range of learning activities being held. It provided an excellent
opportunity for staff and students to showcase with parents and the local
community the wonderful learning occurring in classrooms.
In the Prep – Year 2 department, students marked this special week with
some celebratory activities that encompassed the fantastic learning that our
students are participating in every day. Students participated and performed
in a music concert as part of their weekly music class with specialist music
teacher, Fiona Pugh, with musical instruments and singing voices filling the
school.
A visit from local trainee doctors saw students’ teddy bears bandaged and given injections to reduce the fear and anxiety some younger
students have in regards to visiting a hospital. A Science experiment also allowed parents to put on their scientist hat and help create a
parachute device that allowed a teddy bear biscuit to arrive safely at the bottom of our front ramp, with some highly creative designs
tested.
On Wednesday 21st May, Prep – Year 2 students participated in Simultaneous Storytime by reading and listening to the book Too Many
Elephants in this House, a book selected to be read by thousands of students throughout Australia at the same time on the same day.
Parents helped students respond to the chosen text by creating puppets from the book, writing poems, making giant elephant footprints
and even making a page each for a Camperdown College big book!
Thursday saw the whole school transformed into Superhero Central with students and staff dressing up as their favourite superhero
character. This provided stimulus for our Big Write session which was writing a narrative on the topic of Superheroes. Beginning earlier
this term, students engage in daily writing activities on vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation (VCOP) leading up to their Big
Write session on Thursdays where they engage in uplevelling their writing abilities. Being in character for their Big Write in Education
Week saw some creatively constructed pieces of writing produced.
In a wonderful conclusion to Education Week, Prep – Year 2 students shared and celebrated the Australian animal dioramas they had
been constructing as part of their Australian Animal investigations this term. Some very thoughtful designs were shared showcasing
different animals, habitats and features that are associated with our very diverse Australian flora and fauna.

rd May, students from Year 3 – 6 competed against
eight other schools in the District Schools Sports Association
Cross Country Championship at the Noorat Recreation Reserve.
After walking the course to better our understanding of the 1
kilometre, 2 kilometre and 3 kilometre distances, the students
were very motivated to do their best.
With each race, our students were very encouraging and cheered
each other on. All students showed great persistence and
endurance by pushing through their comfort zones to finish the
race. It was extremely rewarding to see the faces of very proud
competitors as they crossed the finish line.
There were many personal bests on the day and we were very
excited to have three Year 6 boys qualify for the Division Cross
Country Carnival in Warrnambool yesterday. Jack Helmore came
first and ran 3 kilometres in just over 11 minutes, second was
Riley Helmore and fourth was Harry Sumner (all pictured below);
all in the 12/O age group.
It was a very exciting race with Jack having a good start and
leading all the way and Riley not far behind.

CCaarreeeerrss NNeewwss You are the single greatest influence on your child’s education and career decisions. The Face-to-Face
report (2010) by the National Youth Agency in England identified parents and carers as the most
common first point of call for career development information, advice and guidance for young people.
Other research similarly points to the important role of parents in the career development of their
children, especially in the early stages rather than in the later stages of their education (Watson and
McMahon, 2003). There is also mounting evidence that parental involvement in student learning
improves student motivation, attendance, achievement and career outcomes. Career development
needs to focus not only on finding a job, but on the skills, knowledge, attitudes, behaviours and
competencies your child will need lead a productive and fulfilling life.
It is important to encourage your child to discuss their goals and aspirations, and for you to listen to their ideas. Be open-minded and
encouraging. Be mindful that this is your child’s career journey. While you will have your own ideas about the direction they should go
in, the decisions are theirs. Every child’s career journey is unique. Some children will have clear goals from a young age, others will take
a longer time to explore their options and make decisions. Be patient as they move from discovering who they are towards applying the
knowledge and skills they gain at school. Your child’s school will support this through planned career development learning and
activities informed by the Victorian Careers Curriculum Framework.

VCAL students interview staff member–
I had the pleasure of recently talking to one of the
newest Education Support staff members at the Junior
Campus, Jenny O’Neil:
I asked Jenny how she felt about what she does at the Junior
Campus, she said she is excited about working with the
Prep students and likes the new challenge as well as the
great environment and is also enjoying being back at the
school her own children attended.
Jenny has been involved with Camperdown College for 16
years as a parent and this year as a staff member. She has
also been a part of Parents & Friends and has lived in
Camperdown her whole life.
Jenny’s first impression of the College is that it is a great
environment, friendly people and great facilities. Jenny’s
favourite thing as an Education Support staff member is to
help the students with reading and writing.
Jenny helps fourteen students every
day. Jenny enjoys golf, reading and
sewing when she is not working at our
Junior Campus.

BRIDGE Program All students at the Junior Campus had the opportunity to learn specifically about the culture of West Java through the Jaipong dance and
attempting to tie a traditional headdress, the Lomar. They also learned an Indonesian song Naik, Naik Ke puncak gunung (Up, up the
mountain) and of course, had lots of questions about Pak Janwar and Pak Dian’s life in Indonesia.
Year 7/8 students had the privilege of listening to two native speakers in all of their classes. There were bilingual lessons about the
school SMPN 2 Leuwisadeng, customs and traditions in each of Indonesia’s 33 provinces and lots of discussions, including numerous
questions about futsal. They also learnt a more complex version of the Jaipong dance, they attempted to tie the Lomar and they learnt a
song Halo Halo Bandung (Hello, Hello Bandung). Pak Dian and Pak Janwar also observed several other classes to learn about the
education system in Australia.
Lots of time has also been spent over the last two weeks planning future communications
between the two schools via video conferencing and wikispaces. It has been very exciting
developing our new sister school relationship and hopefully there will be many exciting activities
between the two schools in the near future.
