The fire was well off the beaten path.It wasn’t big, but had the potential to

quickly spread in the tinder-dry forest, just northwest of McIvor Lake.

Firefighters were called to the fire shortly after 2 p.m. Two helicopters dropped water on the 30x50-metre fire to contain the blaze before 15 firefight-ers from Campbell River and the For-estry Service took over on the ground.

According to Fire Chief Ian Baikie, the

cause of the fire is unknown. The blaze was spotted by a pilot and was more than 400 metres away from the roadway near the McIvor Lake boat ramp. The fire was also well away from any trails.

A coast-wide fire ban is currently in effect due to the dry conditions.

The RCMP Musical Ride arrives this weekend.

There are two shows taking place at the Campbell River Trail Riders facility on General Hill. The show starts at 7 p.m. on Saturday and at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Ticket sales proceeds go to Campbell River Crime Stoppers while all food sale profits will ben-efit Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock.

Tickets are $10, $6 for youth and free to three and under. Advance tickets are available at A Cut Above, Island Fever Travel, Visi-tor Info Centre, Campbell River RCMP detachment and from the Campbell River Trail riders.

A glass of wine at the spa? A craft beer at the farmer’s market? Can B.C. survive the next wave of modernization of its archaic liquor laws?

These suggest ions are part of a review of liquor policy rolled out Wednesday. Richmond MLA John Yap has been assigned to examine regulations that unnec-essarily restrict business, making recommenda-tions to the provincial cabinet by November.

One proposal is allow-ing under-aged children to have lunch at a pub

with their parents during the day, as they can do in a licensed restaurant. As well as considering licences for farm markets and spas, the review is to look at why it takes up to a year to issue a liquor licence to a business.

Letters are going out to 10,000 licence holders and rural liquor agency stores looking for feed-back, and a website for public comments is to be added in September.

The terms of the review include ensuring that the $1 billion annual gov-ernment revenue from liquor sales and sales tax is maintained or increased. The review

will not look at privati-zation of liquor distri-bution, a controversial suggestion the govern-ment backed away from last year. Recent reforms in B.C. have included allowing people to bring their own wine to a res-taurant, and removing restrictions on buying wine from another prov-ince for personal use.

Liquor laws under review

Staff at city hall are mourning the loss of two for-mer employees.

George Paul, the city’s acting manager from Jan-uary 2010 to February 2011, died Tuesday follow-ing a battle with from pancreatic cancer.

“George came out of retirement to assist Camp-bell River...during a very difficult time,” said cur-rent city manager Andy Laidlaw in a news release. “Over 14 months, he put immense effort into re-building the city hall team that was working through extraordinary budget issues as well as staff shortages and numerous legal issues.”

On July 26, Nelson Deck, the city’s former direc-tor of engineering died here in Campbell River.

Deck worked in the engineering department from 1978-1993, pivotal years in the development of the future city.

His career highlights involved the construction of the current city hall building, Discovery Pier, the Norm Wood sewage treatment plant, Wil-low Point Park and Sportsplex. Deck also saw to the development and building of sewers to North Campbell River and Quinsam Heights.

T h e S t r a t h c o n a Regional District will consider a joint, regional tourism service to help promote the area.

Directors at the July 25 board meeting wanted to get the ball rolling with a feasibility study but Quadra Island director Jim Abram wanted to ensure what the board was voting on would not favour one regional area over another.

Abram wanted any decisions made within the regional tourism service to be approved by electors on an area to area basis, so that deci-sions made by Campbell River, which carries the greatest weight in vot-ing based on popula-tion, would not overrule other smaller areas such as Cortes and Quadra islands or Area D (Oys-ter River/Ocean Grove).

“If other areas outside of Campbell River vote

a way opposite of Camp-bell River it doesn’t mat-ter, Campbell River orders the day,” Abram said.

A regional tourism ser-vice, which could include harmonization of exist-ing programs, is one of 17 strategic priorities identified by the board. At a Municipal Services Committee June 27 which includes Camp-bell River directors Ron Kerr, Claire Moglove, Larry Samson, Mary Storry, and Jakeway, as well as Craig Anderson (Gold River), John Mac-Donald (Sayward), Ted

Lewis (Zeballos), and Jude Schooner (Tahsis), directors recommended the regional district board vote in favour of setting up the regional tourism service.

Director and Camp-bell River Mayor Walter Jakeway felt the recom-mendation was straight-forward. He pointed out that directors were only deciding on whether to move forward with a report on a timeframe for implementing the new service.

“You can see now, with 17 strategic priorities and this being the top one,

why it never gets off the ground,” Jakeway said. “Before it even gets mov-ing you’ve got trip wires and strings attached to it. Nothing will ever get done if you tie it up with strings and wire – it’ll never happen. It’s simple – just do the study and then study it (or) you can forget about the other 16 priority items.”

In the end, the board asked staff to prepare a report outlining the timeline for implement-ing a tourism service as well as a draft to hire a consultant to conduct a feasibility study.

Cadet Jake Schuszter of Campbell River is spend-ing part of his summer at the regional gliding school on the Air Cadet Glider Pilot Scholarship Course.

Schuszter is one of 44 Air Cadets selected from across B.C. for the opportunity to pursue their Transport Canada glider pilot license. He is flying the Schweizer 2-33A gliders, which are owned by the BC Provin-cial Committee of the Air Cadet League of Canada.

“Glider is a great place to meet friends and a great start to begin my career as a pilot,” says Schuszter.

Being accepted to the program at CFB Comox is no easy task either.

“These young men and women have worked very hard to get here on scholarship, and will

continue to work even harder throughout the course,” said command-ing officer Lt.-Col Tony Appels.

Cadet Schuszter is a

member of 363 Brian Barker Squadron in Campbell River. He studied all aspects of aviation in order to pass an entrance exam, prior to sitting before a review board. His school marks, cadet service, leadership and physical fitness are also evaluated as part of the selection process.

At the conclusion of the intense six-week training period, the successful students will receive their coveted Air Cadet Glider Pilot Wings on graduation day, Aug. 15.

The Royal Canadian Air Cadets is a national co-educational youth organization sponsored by the Canadian Forces in partnership with the civilian Air Cadet League of Canada.

In British Colum-bia there are approxi-mately 3,700 Air Cadets enrolled in 57 Squad-rons. The BC Ministry of Education, Skills and Training recognizes the cadet program as a “min-istry- accepted External Course” for which stu-dents may receive gradu-ation credit.

The new chief admin-istrative officer of the Strathcona Regional District has his sights set on fulfilling strategic pri-orities set by the board of directors, analyzing staffing and bringing the organization up to speed with modern technology.

Russ Hotsenpiller was introduced as the new chief administrative offi-cer at Wednesday’s board of directors meeting.

The new role is a pro-motion for Hotsenpiller who was serving as the community ser vices

Manager for the regional district.

Hotsenpiller takes over from for-mer chief a d m i n -is t rat ive o f f i c e r B r i a n R e a r -don, who v a c a t e d the posi-tion in late March.

Hotsenpiller said he was thankful for the appointment and eager to get to work.

“I enjoy this work, I get to work with some wonderful people and I’m very excited for this

opportunity,” said Hot-senpiller who added that he was ready to tackle all of “the work that’s piled up that needs to be done.”

Hotsenpiller said one of the first things he will look at during his tenure is staffing at the regional district.

“It wouldn’t be prudent to roll out a succession plan now until I review the organization from the seat I’m sitting in now, however, this is top of mind,” Hotsenpiller said. “There’s no ques-tion, succession is one of the top three things we need to look at. People in key positions are going to

be moving on to the next phase in their lives.”

Hotsenpiller also wants to get the board moving forward with its 17 stra-tegic priorities – includ-ing a regional tourism service – that it laid out.

“I want to have us be aware and focus more on strategic priorities,” Hot-senpiller said. “To that end I will recommend to you a focus on our stra-tegic priorities in the fall, to invest in an in-house session to review these priorities in September.”

The new chief admin-istrative officer also promised a new website, as well as continuing to

improve on solid rela-tions with First Nations.

Hotsenpiller also had some advice for regional district directors. He said while many of the challenges the board faces may seem daunt-ing, often they are com-pounded by directors’ difference of opinion and he urged directors to respect each others’ opinions.

Hotsenpiller is respon-sible for the management of the overall operations of the regional district and overseeing the suc-cessful implementation of board policies and direction.

Off Road LampsThere is little doubt in my mind that one of the most popular add on accessories for vehicles is some type of light. I was asked recently to comment by a visitor to the DriveSmartBC web site who said that he had noticed rectangular LED light bars in the bumpers and on the roofs of trucks and SUVs. While it is possible that some of these lamps are legal for use on the highway, many are not. The question is, how do you tell?

In general, lights that comply with requirements are marked by the manufacturer to show that fact. North American equipment bears SAE or DOT codes, European lamps with E codes and Japanese lights with JIS/JASIC codes. Each has a particular marking that shows device function such as SAE Y or E HR for an auxiliary driving light. A lack of these markings should raise a red � ag.

Unfortunately, it is common to � nd counterfeit markings on aftermarket lamps, particularly those purchased from outside of Canada on eBay. LED lights are slowly gaining acceptance for on highway applications and no doubt will be present in all applications in future. For now, if you cannot � nd a similar LED lamp that is original equipment on a vehicle manufactured in North America be suspicious that the approval markings are bogus.

If the lamps do not show any approval markings or words similar to “check with local authorities before using on the highway” are present on the packaging it is highly probable that these lights are not legal for use.

All non-approved lamps installed on your vehicle are considered to be “off road lamps” and must be covered with an opaque cover when the vehicle is being driven on the highway.

We have to agree with the readers who voted in last week’s poll: The Maritime Heritage Centre isn’t the best

spot for a new pet adoption centre.Granted, our online poll is not

scientific or should be viewed as the “definitive word” on how Campbell River residents see issues.

In short, it’s a fun and interactive way to engage readers and to stir debate and discussion in our community – that’s

what community papers do.Still, the lopsided vote – just five in favour and 104

against – was pretty surprising and if we could add one more vote too, it would be a check beside “no.”

You can’t blame the BC SPCA for wanting to move into the centre which is in a prime waterfront location that sees plenty of public traffic, and has far better parking than the former location of the SPCA’s shelter.

It would also be good for the SPCA’s profile in Campbell River which has had a tough year in its battles with the city and its loss of the animal control contract.

That said, the Maritime Heritage building was never intended to be a pet distribution centre. It’s a community gathering place and a maritime museum that is home to

the magnificently restored fishing boat, the BCP 45.Somehow the combination of museum visitors, barking

dogs and mewing cats just isn’t a good mix.However, there are plenty of other empty commercial

spaces in the city that can provide enough space and parking to provide for the SPCA’s needs.

And there must be a landlord, maybe even two, who has a pet dog or cat, and supports the SPCA as well, and can provide a fair deal for rent.

Maybe even the city and council can help the SPCA find a new home – and it would be gratifying to see the two sides trying to work together again.

Let’s not rely on Nestle about water stats

We say: SPCA’s proposed new site just isn’t the best location

Here’s a question that our provincial gov-ernment ought to be able to answer but can’t: How much water is the world’s biggest bottled water seller withdrawing from wells in British Columbia?

The province doesn’t know because it isn’t asking. It does not require Nestlé Waters Can-ada to obtain a permit to withdraw water. It does not require Nestlé to report its withdraw-als. And it does not charge Nestlé a penny for the water it uses, even though the company profits handsomely from the hundreds of mil-lions of bottles it sells under popular brand names like Perrier, Montclair and Vittel.

To its credit, Nestlé has in the past (it no longer does) voluntarily filed written reports on its water withdrawals with the District of

Hope, which draws from the same aquifer as the company and uses it to supply 6,500 local residents with their drinking water.

But voluntary disclosure misses the point. The provincial government is responsible for managing public waters for our collective good. In the absence of basic information, the question must be asked: Is government doing all it can to look after this vital natural resource?

Again to its credit, when I contacted Nestlé to ask how much water it withdraws at Hope it quickly volunteered the information. In 2012, corporate affairs spokesperson John Challi-nor said, Nestlé withdrew 71 million gallons, or enough water to fill more than 537 million half-litre bottles.

Immense as this sounds, Challinor called it the proverbial drop in the bucket.

“Based on our mapping we drew less than 7/10ths of one per cent of all available water in the sub-watershed for drawing,” Challinor said in an e-mail.

But once again, this misses the point. Our mapping? Surely it is government that should know what water is available for Nestlé and other commercial interests to use, not the other way around.

That vital information, along with data on what major consumers actually use, should be in the public domain for all to see. And it should fall to government to gather and report it, while also ensuring the public that our water resources are not at risk of being overdrawn.

It is worth noting that these gaps in informa-tion apply to groundwater, not surface water. B.C. has no comprehensive groundwater regu-lation, so withdrawals from wells are virtually

untracked.The province does issue water licences gov-

erning withdrawals from surface sources such as rivers, lakes and streams. And it places terms in such licences that limit water takings.

Even so, B.C.’s sound management of sur-face waters is itself in question given three significant deficiencies. One, B.C. has no sin-gle agency tracking and reporting water use. Two, the province does not impose across-the-board water-metering requirements. And three, while the government does charge sur-face water users fees for what they use, the fees are often embarrassingly low.

Often projects like Robron can run over-budget. A risk analysis and cost benefit would be an interesting read to see how you came upon your decision.

To take my reasoning to a different level, the 600-member Seniors Club approached the city and were turned down. Now I know there are less soccer players than seniors in this city, so why the difference?

I believe the seniors have all paid their fair share of taxes and should be treated with more respect for our efforts to build a clubhouse than was showed by city council. Both Courtenay and Comox have beautiful facilities, and we could too if we could only work together.

Come on all you seniors, take your pen in hand let council see that you have had it with the raising of taxes year after year. I am sure there are a few councillors who have totally forgotten who is paying their wages. I think it is time to give them a tax revolt to deal with in the coming year. I will be organizing it if things don’t change for the better.

toxic that the water can never be returned to the rivers, lakes and streams from where it came.

Dawson Creek cur-rently charges energy companies the equiva-lent of $11,000 for every Olympic swimming pool’s worth of water purchased from the city. The corresponding charge to the same com-panies by the provincial government amounts to less than $3.

MLA Steve Thomson, whose Ministry of For-ests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations is responsible for water authorizations, acknowl-edged recently that the government must reform

B.C.’s century-old Water Act.

In response to ques-tions in the provincial legislature, Thomson said he generally sup-ports policies that would address the three defi-ciencies noted above. Thomson also said that as part of its promised Water Act “moderniza-tion,” the government is considering new ground-water legislation.

Environment minister Mary Polak has said fur-ther that “improved mea-surement and reporting of water use will be a key feature” in legislation that is now expected in 2014. All of this is to be applauded and cannot come soon enough.

In Ontario recently,

the provincial govern-ment imposed rules on Nestlé when it renewed the company’s water-taking permit at a well near the community of Guelph. The new rules made it mandatory that Nestlé limit withdrawals in times of drought.

Nestlé appealed that decision to Ontario’s Environmental Appeals Tr ibunal and then negotiated a new set of proposed terms to its permit with provincial authorities. Wellington Water Watchers, a local

conservation organiza-tion, and The Council of Canadians subsequently sought standing before the tribunal, which has yet to render a decision.

The good news is that in Ontario there is a debate. We can only hope that the same holds true one day soon in British Columbia.

to congratulate the 17 in attendance at the Public Hearing on July 23, at City Hall voicing all your various concerns against the proposed bylaws banning shipping con-tainers in the city.

Yes, 17 against the pro-

posed bylaw and one for them.

There were many more that were opposed that arrived after the speakers list was finished; when the audience was asked if any one else wanted to add anything they felt enough had already been

said against the proposal and abstained.

The majority of the businesses I saw at the hearing have been using shipping containers for years, so hopefully the city can come up with a solution to the matter.

For the city to try and

paint residential and commercial properties with the same brush is not a good situation. Let’s face it, there should be some restrictions on smaller residential lots.

I’d also like to congrat-ulate the city councilors who DID return my calls.

For those who are interested in how the vote turns out I’d suggest visiting Tuesday’s council meeting.

Aircraft structures students graduate with skills to work across Canada

Dylan Wheaton is young to be launching a second career but if you ask him, he’s just getting started.

At 25, the former auto body technician picked up his bags and moved from his home in Yellowknife to Campbell River to retrain for a career as an aircraft structures technician.

“I was working in an auto body shop for seven years, I didn’t know if I wanted to keep at it,” Wheaton said. “I found NIC’s program online and I thought, I could do that.”

Interested in airplanes and ready for change, Dylan signed up for the program and rented an apartment for 10 months. He has no regrets.

“It’s a slower pace than working on automobiles but to me, it’s more interesting. There’s a lot to learn.”

NIC offers Vancouver Island’s only Aircraft Structures Technician program.

Students gain industry skills with one-month work experience positions and receive Transport Canada recognition toward their Aircraft Maintenance Engineer-Structures licence.

Those interested in joining the Canadian Forces can also earn advanced standing as aircraft structures technicians.

Dylan graduated in June with work waiting.

“I applied for two jobs and got two offers,” he said. “I chose Summit Air, which services diamond mine exploration companies at home.”

Jobs are in high demand. A 2011 BC

labour market survey of industry employers predicted a 10 to 23 per cent job shortage by 2014.

This year, Wheaton was instrumental in building Cessna balance booms. The highly sought after tool is recommended to rebalance Cessna flight controls after repairs or maintenance but NIC’s students are its only manufacturers.

Dylan made two of them.

“There’s just something about building from scratch, I really like,” said Dylan.

“Plus, I’ll be able to take one with me for use in the industry.”

He appreciates instructor Ruedi Pletscher’s skill and ability to introduce students to local employers—from Sealand Aviation in Campbell River to Coulson Aviation’s Mars Water Bomber in Port Alberni.

“I definitely recommend it. It’s a good program and the jobs are out there.”

Summer is in full swing at the Strathcona Park Wilderness Centre.

The Centre is located at the Paradise Mead-ows trailhead in Strath-cona Park, adjacent to Mt. Washington Resort’s Raven Lodge. The Centre is operated by the Strath-cona Wilderness Insti-tute, a non-profit society, which organizes the pro-grams and volunteers to staff the centre every day.

and prime industry, in 1975 the Salmon Festi val introduced a Loggers Sports

demonstrati on as part of the celebrati on and in 1984 it became a sancti oned competi ti on of the Canadian Logger Sports Associati on (CANLOG)!

This fi rst formal competi ti on consisted of 1 Canadian Championship, 15 events and $5,000 in prizes. Popularity and support for the event began to grow each year and in 2004, with a

prize package of $25,000, the Salmon Festi val’s Logging Sports event hosted it’s fi rst World Championship. In 2005, it hosted 2 World and 7 Canadian Championships, 31 other events and over $30,000 in prizes ranking it No. 1 in Canada. Today this competi ti on is sti ll ranked No. 1 in Canada and is ranked No. 4 in North America.

Although an impressive record, the World Class Competi ti on would not exist without the support of the city, sponsors and spectators.

Historically logging has been the prime resource

based industry for the coastal areas of Briti sh

Columbia. From the days of hand logging, bulls, horses and steam machinery to

today’s use of grapple yarders, self-loaders, and

helicopters the industry has seen many changes. Throughout

these changes the one thing that has remained

constant has been the loggers

getti ng together to show off their skills in friendly competi ti ons.

Today, nearly every major logging community has a form of these competi ti ons, which have become to be

known as “Loggers Sports“ and Campbell River is no excepti on. Since Campbell River is the major center for the logging industry on Northern Vancouver

Island as well as the many coastal islands and inlets, it is only natural that

Logging Sport Competi ti ons became a major event in the

community.

Logging Sports are not just competi ti ons amongst the loggers

but they also depict the heritage

of the North Island by

Campbell River Salmon Festival’s Logging Sports

incorporati ng entertaining events that show both

past and present logging practi ces. Events such as axe throwing, tree climbing, spring board chops, log rolling, hand bucking and high

speed power saw cutti ng never cease to amaze the crowds at these competi ti ons.

Logging Sports has become so popular in Campbell River that TSN Television network aired our 2000, 2006, 2007 & 2011 Logger Sports as well as A- Channel, CHCT TV, and Shaw TV routi nely cover our Logger Sports on their news and sports broadcasts.

In 2006 and 2008 we were able to host the most presti gious Logging Sports event in Canada, “the Canadian East-West Logging Sports Challenge”. This competi ti on hosted Ontario, Quebec and Mariti me Loggers as they competed against Alberta and Briti sh Columbia loggers to determine who are the best, East or West.

The West won both events. In 2010 two competi tors Mitch Hewitt & Dave MacLeod were chosen at our show to represent Canada at the World Timbersports in Austria. Canada came in 4th out of 17 countries.

The 2013 competi ti on will host 2 World Championships and 7 Canadian Championships along with 30+ other Open, Intermediate, Novice, ladies, Youth, and Teen events. Internati onal and local loggers will be competi ng for part of the $30,000 prize package at this World Class Loggers Sports Competi ti on.

For 7 consecuti ve years the Campbell River show has been the largest Logging Sports Competi ti on in Canada and is currently ranked 4th in North America.

When John Holly-wood first gathered two clients of the Association of Community Living together for a jam session he figured he was giving them an opportunity to express themselves through music.

W h at Ho l l y w o o d quickly discovered was that he was going to have to go home and practice to keep up with the tal-ented young men.

Fast forward eight years later and the trio, along with five other band members they met along the way, are preparing to record a second album as Inclu-sion – a group made up of staff and clients from the Campbell River and District Association for Community Living. Sev-eral of the band mem-bers have disabilities but that hasn’t slowed them down.

The original three are Hollywood on the gui-tar and vocals, Andrew Wilkes on keyboard, and Justin Fong on the Q chord. Dwayne Bryant, who plays the washboard and djembe (a skin-cov-ered goblet drum played with bare hands), joined the group shortly after.

Hollywood’s son J.L., who plays an electronic drum kit, and is the only member not associated with the Association for Community Living, along with Helen Frier (vocalist and harmony),

Gail McIntosh (singer, percussion, and emcee) and the most recent addition, Richard Frank-lin on bass guitar and vocals, make up the rest of Inclusion.

“We’re an independent group, we practice on our own time,” Hollywood says. “Nobody is paid to do it; we do it for fun.

“Our goal is to take the message out to kids that people with disabilities have gifts and just bring some awareness of what people can do. By middle school, kids with dis-abilities tend to fall into groups with other kids with disabilities and I guess what we’re try-ing to say is that doesn’t have to be the case, that shouldn’t be the case.”

Hollywood says Inclu-sion is about encourag-ing those with disabilities that they can do what-ever they set their mind to while the message to the rest of the students is there are ways to include those with disabilities.

The band has been very generous in help-ing local charities since its inception, hosting an Inclusion and Friends set with admission dona-tions going to support initiatives such as Cedar Elementary School’s breakfast program and the food bank.

This weekend it will be Inclusion’s turn to play for itself.

The band will be taking its upbeat, toe tapping rhythms to the Wal-Mart parking lot this Saturday

as part of Steve Mar-shall Ford’s Drive 4UR Community fundraiser, with proceeds going to the Campbell River and District Association for Community Living. The Association, in turn, has decided to use the funds to assist Inclusion.

For each person who takes a 10-minute test drive of a new Ford vehi-cle, Inclusion will receive a sum of money, up to $6,000. Inclusion will be providing the entertain-ment for the event, with

performances at 11 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. out-side Wal-Mart.

With the funds raised, the band hopes to take its message of inclusion into the schools on Van-couver Island and put together a professional, educational package that it can present to students.

The Ford Drive 4UR Community event runs from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. in the Wal-Mart parking lot, across from this week-end’s Salmon Festival and Logger Sports.

Jana Marie Kraus, 65, entered into eternal peace on Sunday 4th August 2013 at Yucalta Lodge, Campbell River, BC.Jana was born on September 6, 1947 in Prague, Czech Republic. She defected to Canada in 1969 to start a new and adventurous life. Jana moved to Campbell River in 1985 with her family, and shortly after, began working for Painter’s Lodge, where she worked for more than 20 years. Jana was a strong, stubborn, honest woman, full of life and with an infectious laugh.Her devoted son, David Kraus, predeceased her in 2009, leaving behind his wife, Katie. She leaves behind her sister Mila in the Czech Republic, daughter Michelle (James), and her beautiful grandchildren Brennan, Sophie and Charlie. She leaves behind many other close and cherished friends, and many whom came to call Jana “Mom” as well.She will be greatly missed by all the people she has touched over the years and will continue to live in our hearts.Many thanks to the nursing staff at Yucalta Lodge for all of Jana’s care.

Now retired from reffing the big boys, Fraser was in Campbell River on Monday night to officiate the charity hockey match between the NHL Oldtimers and the local Law Enforcement club. The undermanned Law Enforcement team weren’t much of a match for the Oldtimers which included Hall of Famers Bryan Trot-tier and Glenn Anderson. Even a couple lopsided trades didn’t help the Cops who fell 17-12...or something like that. See more photos on Page A31.

BC Hydro crews were going flat out much of Monday to repair wind damage that caused power outages from south of Willow Point to north and west of Campbell-ton.

Wind gusting above 100 kilometres Sunday sent a tree crashing onto power lines downtown.

Campbell River Community Centre employees came to work Monday morning to find a cold and dark building.

The centre’s computer system was still idle Monday afternoon. The nearby Scotia-bank was in the dark much of the day.

In all there were more than 25 outages across the city affecting more than 700 cus-tomers.

Residents of the Quinsam Indian Reserve were also in the dark.Outages on Quadra and

Cortes islands affected more than 2,000 customers on Mon-day. More than 500 customers were still without power on the islands on Tuesday.

The Sunday storm also forced cancellation of Camp-bell River to Quadra and Quadra to Cortes ferry sail-ings. Cancellations on the two routes continued into Tuesday.

The 2013 Waterski Provincials were held at McIvor Lake July 27-28 and featured some of the best in the sport.

A few internationally ranked competitors made the trek up to the lake, including National Team member Jed Leach from Shawnigan Lake.

The Campbell River Eagles Waterski Club hosted the provincials which attracted 50 com-petitors – most from the Island but some from as far away as William’s Lake.

Competitors tackled the classic three event skiing which includes slalom, trick and jump events.

Results for Campbell River competitors:

Trent Perras (10-years-old) – fifth in slalom (one ball), third in jump (6.9 metres), fourth in trick (200 points), and fourth overall.

Tyler Jochimski (10) – third in slalom (four balls).

Jared Perras (12) – seventh in slalom (38 balls), fifth in trick (190 points), fourth in jump (16.5 metres), and fourth overall.

Carrissa Jochimski (13) – second in slalom (four balls).

Madison Oke (13) – third in slalom (three balls).

Logan Frame (15) – fifth in slalom (two balls).

Clint Baikie – first in trick (350 points).

Kim Brown – second in trick (860 points).

Ken Watkin – third in slalom (37 balls).

The biggest monster truck show to have ever graced Saratoga Speed-way was held over the August long weekend. Reverse Racer, California Kid, Rockstar, American Graffiti and Bucked Up hit some huge jumps over the weekend, accompa-nied by a record field of 19 Crash to Pass cars, Hornets, Figure 8’s and the Roadrunners.

A record 19 car field of Crash to Pass cars timed in over the weekend. After three restarts in the main event and lots of hitting, Sheldon Hopp (#73) finally emerged as the leader on lap eight and he held off a hard charging field to take the win. Hopp won the main event again on Sunday.

Twenty-seven Hornet cars took to the track on Saturday. In the B main, Boston Larson (#87) led for the first 16 laps, but some debris on the track popped his tire, open-ing the door for Jeremy Stormo (#81) to take the lead and win his fifth

main event of the year. In the A main, Kevin Lawre-nuk (#01) lead from turn four on, taking home the win.

The same lineup was scheduled for Sunday as well for the Hornets. In the 25 lap B main, Stormo won his second main in as many nights. Some amazing racing took place in the 20 lap A main; Cameron Phillips (#09) held the lead for the first 19 laps, holding off five hard charging cars, but Kyle Fallowfield (#14) found his way around Phillips on the last lap to take the win in one of the best A mains of the year. In the Figure 8 class, main event win went to 14-year-old Brad Ken-nedy (#16). Sunday night saw the mother and son team of Brad and Cindy Kennedy dominate the Figure 8 field, with Brad winning the heat and Cindy taking the main.

Extra laps...The fourth round of drifting will take place on Saturday. The I.M.C.A Modifieds, Bomber cars and the Dwarf cars will accom-pany the drifters.

A local charity branch is making things just a little bit warmer for can-cer patients at Campbell River Hospital.

The Campbell River chapter of the Order of

the Eastern Star recently made a donation to the hospital library and pur-chased a blanket warmer for the Cancer Care Department. The library provides resource mate-

rials to patients and their families in the treatment and fight against cancer, while a warm blanket helps to provide a sense of comfort and calmness.

The Eastern Star Char-

ity has branches through-out B.C. Since 1994, the local Campbell River chapter has donated more than $12,000 to support cancer care at Campbell River Hospital.

Most people are famil-iar with the alien plant Scotch broom, but fewer know about the much more threatening species knotweed.

T h e s e a g g r e s s i v e plants grow better in their new habitat due to the absence of native predators and diseases that limit their growth at home. Japanese knot-weed is a tall shrub with bamboo-like stems.

Knotweed grows in many habitats, but is of most concern next to streams and rivers.

“We are most con-cerned with the health of the Campbell River estuary, which is such an important salmon habitat,” says Sandra Milligan, Greenways v ice-pres ident who spearheaded the first knotweed treatments along Myrt Thompson trail last year.

Knotweed’s incredibly extensive root system and sprouting ability makes it extremely dif-ficult to control. Digging or hand-pulling causes plants to send more roots underground and actu-ally increases the infes-tation size. Herbicide treatments are the only known effective means of removal.

Ernie Sellentin, inva-sive plant specialist from

the Coastal Invasive Plant committee, says, “We retreated over half of last year’s 10 small knot-weed infestations. First time treatments were applied to infestations along Homewood Road that threaten Nunn’s Creek and to infestation on Simms Creek and the Campbell River. We are very fortunate to have been able to attack these small infestations before they become much more costly to eradicate.”

Milligan adds, “Other estuaries have been sig-nificantly impacted by knotweed, which erodes banks and damages salmon habitat.”

This year, Greenways volunteers made a fan-tastic impact by remov-ing Scotch broom and yellow flag iris from our stream corridors, but when it comes to knot-weed, professionals are required.

Some of the project funding was provided by BC Hydro ($5,000) and Fisheries and Oceans Canada ($1,000).

Knotweed was treated in Nunns Creek Park and Simms Creek water-sheds, the Seawalk and along the Myrt Thomp-son Trail.

Greenways also plans to eradicate knotweed from streamside habitats.
