Campbell Direct FOUNDATION Programme Detail

Programme contents: Campbell Direct Foundation Level 1 is a 6 to 12 week academic English course attached to IELTS or General English. It is designed for students who need to demonstrate that they are at an IELTS 5.0 level for entry into Victoria University of Wellington’s ‘Standard Plus’ Foundation Studies programme. Campbell Direct Foundation Level 2 is a 12 week academic English course which is usually taken after successful completion of Campbell Direct Level 1. It is designed for students who need to demonstrate that they are at an IELTS 5.5 level for entry into Victoria University of Wellington’s ‘Standard’ Foundation Studies programme, or entry into diploma level courses at one of Campbell’s many tertiary partners.

Campbell Direct covers all basic skill areas – Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking, plus study skills for university preparation.

For more information on Campbell’s IELTS Course visit The Campbell Institute’s website: www.campbell.ac.nz/IELTS

Entry Requirements

All students will need to take The Campbell Placement Test before being granted entry into Campbell Direct Foundation Level 1. However, as a useful guide students should have a strong Pre-Intermediate to Intermediate level of English (approximately IELTS 4.5 overall).

Students may be able to enter into Campbell Direct Foundation Level 2 directly without taking Campbell Direct Level 1. Students must take the Campbell Placement Test before being granted entry into Campbell Direct Foundation Level 2. However, as a useful guide, students should have a High Intermediate level of English (approximately IELTS 5.0 overall).

Students must also be aged 17+ with at least two years at senior high school in home country or New Zealand. For further information on the Victoria University of Wellington Foundation Studies Programme please refer to the Prospectus here.

Students applying to study on Campbell Direct FOUNDATION who are not currently in New Zealand will be required to take our Online Pre-Test (see final page of this manual for more information). This is not a substitute for the Campbell Placement Test, but will help us to develop a realistic study plan for the student.

In many cases, students will need to study General English before entering Campbell Direct FOUNDATION.

Timetable

Campbell Direct Foundation Level 1 is 6-12 weeks in total. The course consists of a mix of general English and IELTS with afternoon academic studies’ modules.

Campbell Direct Foundation Level 2 is 12 weeks in total. The first 11 weeks consist of classes and tuition and the final week is an exam week.

Enrolment

While we encourage enrolments into Campbell Direct Foundation, we would prefer to work with agents to develop a realistic study programme for the student.

If you have a candidate for Campbell Direct we suggest you contact our Pathways Manager, Jennie Wang in the first instance.

Email: [email protected] Phone: +64 4 8033434

We will require the student to sit our online pre-test to ascertain which level of English they are at. This test is not definitive, but will provide us with some measure of the student’s readiness to enter Campbell Direct Foundation. Based on these results, we can map out a full study programme for the student. This may include a period of General English study before the student is ready to enter Campbell Direct Foundation.

For access to the online pre-test please see the section Campbell Online Pre-Test on the final page of this manual.

Students already studying at Campbell may elect to take Campbell Direct FOUNDATION as long as they meet the entry requirements. We encourage our agents to communicate with their students about their available options.

Course Content

Campbell Direct focuses on all key language skills and employs a combination of ongoing assessment and end of course exams. Assessment covers all skill areas:

• Reading: skimming and scanning; topics of paragraphs; main ideas; inference skills • Writing: sentence combining; paragraph writing; personal narrative; expository essay, report

writing • Speaking: speaking interview in IELTS format • Listening: listening for gist and specific details; note-taking • Vocabulary: Academic Word List and general topic related vocabulary

Advantages of Campbell Direct Assessment

The Campbell Direct Assessment is designed to be more reflective of the real university study environment, and more “student friendly”. For example:

• Extra time for reading (same text length as IELTS exam, but with extra time) • Listening – hear the test twice (during the IETLS exam, students only have the listening text

once) • Writing – some assessment is in-class writing with teacher’s help (gives students the chance

to check and improve their work) • During the speaking interview, the examiner is friendly and supportive, and may prompt the

student if necessary • Assessment over more than 1 day (reduces the chances of a student having a “bad day”)

Results

Final results are issued within 2 working days of course completion, along with course certification, allowing students to confirm entry into subsequent programme immediately.
