Donor Spotlight

If there is one word that sums up John Flippin and his relationship with the Academy of Fine Arts it would be passionate. Not passionate in a re and brimstone kind of way but a very deep and caring belief in its vital importance to Lynchburg and to all its people. e historic theatre restoration is the nal piece in making our city an all-American city he rmly believes, and he has always done and continues to do, in his quiet and unassuming manner, all he can to make it succeed. So emotional is John when speaking about the Academy that he has even been known to tear up.

John’s love for the Academy stems from his abiding love for his hometown, where he has spent all but six years of his life. It’s not that he couldn’t have gone to a larger city, to New York or Richmond, but he admits he’s a small town boy, and he considers Lynchburg an almost perfect place to live and raise a family. He and his wife Charlynne, by his side since age 14, are proud of all their city oers – a relaxed pace of life, great schools, medical care, airport, stadium and train service, and ve colleges that all contribute to a thriving economy. e only missing piece, this loyal son claims, is a more vibrant arts scene.

Upon graduation from Rhodes College in Memphis, John was oered a job by Merrill Lynch in New York City. He opted instead to complete his MBA at the University of Memphis. Again, due to his impressive ability, numerous enticing job oers came his way from all over, but he chose to join Paul Sackett at United Virginia Bankshares. Aer spending ten educational months in Richmond, he happily returned to Lynchburg and remained with that rm for the next eighteen years. When at age 44, UVB wanted John to move to Richmond, he declined in favor of forming his own local rm with John Bruce and Greg Porter – Flippin, Bruce and Porter.

It was when John returned to Lynchburg aer school that he began to focus on what a treasure was in our midst – the historic and once magnicent Academy of Music eatre. He had known it as a boy but now he learned about all the documentation of its illustrious history, how Lynchburg was the third wealthiest city in the country at its founding and how all the greatest vaudeville acts of the day played on its stage. And he became convinced that it simply had to be a priority for this community to preserve that precious history.

1998 was the year John became actively involved in making that dream a reality. He was rst draed for an advisory committee of the Academy of Music eatre, then for the Board of Trustees. e ensuing years were tumultuous, with changes in management and eorts to match a million dollar pledge. In 2003, when the Academy of Music merged with the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center in an eort to eliminate competing fund drives and put all the arts under one roof, the operation became even more complicated. Aer the rst Chairman of the merged board resigned, John seemed like the natural choice to step into that position. He consented to serve for one year – a dicult year as he struggled to deal with accumulated debt and put the new Academy of Fine Arts on rm footing. His own personal contribution to that eort was largely unknown but signicant.

ose who worked with John during those years until he retired from the Board in 2005 attest to all those qualities that made his service so invaluable, indeed indispensable, qualities that were in many ways a legacy of his mother, Perkins Flippin, who herself was a highly respected businesswoman. He listened, talked quietly and only if he had something to say, and he was always right on. He was analytical and nancially astute and perceptive about people. With modest demeanor, he led forcefully with his intelligence, kindness, passion, and unagging determination to get the job done. He was “a quiet mover and shaker,” recalled fellow Board member Anitra Webster, “who le no stone unturned.”

John will admit that he is disappointed that we have not yet gotten sucient support to complete our theatre restoration and that we are the only city in the state that has not restored their historic theatre. He doesn’t mince words when people impatiently ask, “When are you going to nish?” His brief and immediate response: “Have you given?” at’s because John continues to believe that the Academy of Fine Arts is for everybody, and that we will only get it done when the entire community steps up and participates. Only then can we all share together in the pride of our accomplishment.

Despite his years of prodigious behind the scenes work on the capital campaign, John is not burned out yet – maybe a little tired but no less enthusiastic. His fondest hope is that the younger generation will pick up now and complete the job in his lifetime. “I want to be able to say we got it done. Now Lynchburg is everything I want it to be.” It begs the question: where would we be if everyone cared that deeply?

I gave because: “I want to be on stage”Introducing Gillian, the Academy’s youngest campaign donor.

Academy: Why did you choose to give your allowance toward the restoration when you were 8 years old?G: Because I wanted to see the historic theatre become pretty and revived again. I have seen the designs for the theatre and it looks really cool. I would really like to see that happen.

Academy: What do you normally spend your allowance on?G: (laughs) Usually just little trinkets like gum and mints and chocolate bars. I love chocolate…

Academy: What about the Academy of Music theatre is important to you?G: at it would be a big place for plays. We perform summer theatre down in the other building, and the big stage would just make it feel so much more theatre-like.

Academy: What do you want to do when you grow up?G: Well, rst thing, I would like to be an actress, and I have two back up plans if that doesn’t work for me (laughs). My rst back up plan is to be a dentist, and my second is a history teacher because I love history. So yes, dentistry and history.

Academy: What made you want to be an actress?G: e Academy’s a very artsy place and I’ve come here since I was little. My Dad put me in Sleeping Beauty with my brother, and I loved the experience, and I went back every summer.

Academy: Did you perform onstage this summer with Encore Youth eatre?G: I did Hairspray, Jr. in Encore, my rst year of Encore, and I loved it. It was a little dicult since I was one of the only young kids there, but I got along and it was really great. (laughs) I was girl #2, girl #5 and girl solo. Yeah!

Academy: What other roles have you played at the Academy?G: A caterpillar, a caterpillar end… a dog, Mordrid- King Arthur’s Son. Oh, yes! I played Roquefort the mouse in e Aristocats and the Mayor of Munchkinland. I’ve done a lot!

Academy: During Encore you toured the historic theatre…G: I remember going on stage at Encore and I just sat there and admired the view while everyone else was like “Whoa!” I have danced on the stage and that was an amazing experience for me because it’s such a big stage. I loved it! is is like a home and it’s kind of like moving. I’m a little excited and a little scared about that.

Academy: What is your favorite part in the historic theatre?G: ere’s a place on the side of the theatre where the steps wind up toward the stage; I love climbing up those. It’s like a tunnel; once you step out you see this humungous stage that is so cool. I remember one time my Dad and I went up several ights of stairs that lead up to the balconies and I was a little afraid of heights. We walked up to the 2nd balcony, and my Dad said “C’mon, let’s keep going.” I was so scared; at the top I wouldn’t get o the stairs!

Academy: What would your ideal performance be on the historic stage?G: Singing in the Rain. I love that play so much; it’s my number one thing that I want to do. I would be ne with any part, like a backup dancer or anything, because I just love it!

Academy: Even play the end of a caterpillar?G: Yes, I would be the end of a caterpillar for that! It would be beautiful!

“We perform summer theatre down in the other building, and the big stage would just make it feel so much more theatre-like.”
