Because of my brothers, my childhood revolved

around superheroes. The best thing about

superheroes is that they live a life as a hero and a

normal life as a citizen; best of both worlds! As a

teacher to be, I know what it’s like to have a double

life; at school and at home! Some students are

surprised to hear that I don’t live at school. What

superpower do you want?

- Megan Robert, Recreation Program Leader

We have been very busy filming some great videos

for you! Visit the Tiny Recreation YouTube Channel

to play games, sing songs, and follow along to this

week’s craft instructions. Each activity in this booklet

is accompanied by a video on our YouTube channel.

Some are short little clips while others let you spend

more time with us. We hope you have as much fun

watching them as we had making them!

Thursday is Spirit Day! We want you to create a costume that represents YOU!

What superpower do you have? Maybe you are great at helping friends, super

fast when playing sports, or awesome at singing and dancing. Whatever it is

that makes you an everyday superhero, we want to see it in your costume

design — feel free to share your look with us by posting on Instagram and

tagging @tinyrecreation or by emaling your photo to [email protected].

It’s going to be a SUPER week! Get ready to show

off your super skills as we create some awesome

masks, work up a sweat in superhero training and

even grow our own villains! The greatest challenge

this week will be to dig deep and discover your

everyday superpower. How do you change the lives

of your family and friends?

Concetta Antico from Australia

has a real life superpower. She is

a tetrachromat and can see over

one hundred million different

colours!

Page 2: Camp in a Box It Documents/Recreation/Programs... · 2020. 8. 28. · also has an arch enemy which is the evil super genius Lex Luther. Superman spends lots of time battling his enemy

• Superhero masks

• String

• Construction paper

• Markers or crayons

1. Colour and decorate the mask.

2. Optional: Add construction paper to customize the mask!

3. Poke two holes in the mask, one on each side.

4. Loop the string through the holes to fit around your head and tie off in a knot.

Try to make up your own superhero and create a mask

that will help with your superpowers!

• Yarn

• Paper plate

• Scissors

• Hole puncher (optional)

1. Decorate the paper plate.

2. Make small slits with the scissors or hole punch holes all around the rim of the paper plate.

3. Weave the yarn through all the slits/holes to create a spider web.

4. Attach the leftover yarn to the plate and hang up your web.

Create a spider or Spiderman out of paper, plasticine or

other materials to go on the spider web.

Most superheroes keep their identities a secret by

wearing masks. This is because they don't want villains

to know who they are.

Spiders are not actually insects; they are arachnids!

Unlike insects, which typically have 6 legs, they have 8!

Even with 8 legs, it can take a spider approximately 1

whole hour to create a web!

3

• Comic book template

• Markers

1. Fill in the blanks in the story comic book with words and illustrations.

2. Read your book to family and friends.

Superman is the strongest superhero! He is known as

the man of steel due to his strength.

Pretend the string maze is poison and you need to

save your fellow superhero at the other end of the hall.

Use a timer and try to get faster and faster!

• String

• Tape

• Scissors

• Hallway

1. Cut the string so it can reach from one wall to another and tape each end.

2. Repeat Step 1 a few times, making each piece of string a different height and angle. Continue until there is enough string for an obstacle course.

3. Start at one end of the hall and try to make it through without touching the string with any part of your body. If you accidentally touch a piece of string, you have to start again!

Be the main character in your story! Take your

character on a super cool adventure. Try writing an

original superhero story and share it with your friends

and family!

There are many times when superheroes meet other

comic book characters. The Archie comic book crossed

over with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 1991.

• Door hanger template

• Pompoms

• Gems

• Markers

• Scissors

• Tape or glue

1. Decorate the door hanger with markers, pompoms, and gems.

2. Optional: Make it superhero themed and draw a superhero on it.

3. Hang it on your door as an awesome decoration!

• Elastic bands

• White socks

• Vinegar

• Turmeric

• Bay leaves

1. Soak the socks in a mixture of 1 part white vinegar to 4 parts cold water for an hour. Then rinse with cool water.

2. Wring out the socks so they are damp.

3. Use your desired tie dye technique:

• Method 1: Roll the socks together as a pair. Secure with 3 elastics so it looks like a pie with slices.

• Method 2: Randomly scrunch the socks up and use elastics to secure them.

• Method 3: Put 2 or 3 elastics around each sock, separating each sock into 3 or 4 different sections.

4. Fill a pot with 2 cups of water and add the bay leaves and turmeric to make a yellow coloured dye.

5. On the stove, have an adult simmer the mixture for an hour. Then strain out the plant material and return the liquid to the pot.

6. Place the socks inside and bring to a slow boil.

7. Simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

8. Turn off the heat and let the socks sit in the warm water until desired hue is achieved.

9. Rinse in cold water and dry. Enjoy your socks!

Before doorknobs were invented, people used a bolt or

a lock to keep a door shut. Neat!

Come up with your own superhero name and write it on

your door hanger!

• Gloves

• Pot

• Plant materials (optional)

Try making another colour of dye with the following materials from around your house:

• Carrots or onion skins make orange.

• Oak bark, tea, coffee or acorns make brown.

• Cherries, avocado skins and seeds make pink dye.

• Red cabbage, blueberries or purple grapes make purple.

• Spinach, grass or plantain make a green.

Follow along and watch as staff visit the ‘Superhero Museum’! Can you spot some familiar faces? Watch out for Aquaman - there’s something suspicious about him!

Who was your favourite character? Let us know in the video comments!

• Objects to make a start and finish line

1. Find a big open space and create a start and finish line using object from around your house (i.e. skipping ropes, pylons).

2. Stand at the starting line and take a big breath.

3. Start running while screaming and see if you can make it to the finish line without running out of air!

Create your own superhero skit at home! Dress up in

costumes and perform your skit for family members or

friends! Create an obstacle course to scream and move

through! Use chalk to create one in your driveway or

make one in your yard using things like hula hoops to

jump into or a skipping rope balance beam!

The first superhero created was Phantom who

appeared in 1936.

Use two toilet paper rolls to create superhero cuffs to

put around your wrists. Cut a slit in the roll so it can

easily slip on and off your wrist. Use markers, stickers,

paint etc. to decorate your cuffs! Use them while acting

out a superhero scene!

• Popsicle sticks

• Googly eyes

• Construction paper

• Markers

• Scissors

• Glue

1. Colour and decorate the popsicle sticks so that they look like the body of a superhero or villain.

2. Cut out the construction paper in the shape of a circle. Glue it on the top of the popsicle stick. This will make the face of a superhero or villain.

3. Glue googly eyes for the face of the popsicle stick.

4. Cut out the construction paper in the shape of a cape.

5. Glue the cape to the back of the popsicle stick.

• Scissors

• Markers

• Tape or Glue

1. Using the construction paper, draw a head for the superhero.

2. Draw a body about 3 cm wide and 8 cm tall.

3. Draw the same body again.

4. Cut both out and decorate one as the front of the body and one as the back.

5. Glue the edges together leaving the space at the bottom edge unglued

6. Stick the straw in the bottom opening and blow hard to watch your superhero fly!

Wolverine is a canadian Superhero. He grew up in

Alberta before joining X-men. Neat!

Put your flying superhero through superhero training!

Create a target such as a pillow, a chair or even a spot

on the wall that you want your superhero to hit! Blow

hard and see if you can get your superhero to hit the

target that you created.

Capes have no aerodynamic advantages. In this case,

the paper cape is more aerodynamic than real capes.

In other words, capes are pointless but stylish.

Create a setting for your popsicle stick superheroes.

Stick them in a garden, in slime or whatever you want!

• Construction paper

• Straw

• Who is your best friend?

• What is your favorite thing to eat?

• How did you become Batman?

• If you were to fight Spiderman, who would win?

Superman is a vegetarian. He does not eat meat! He

also has an arch enemy which is the evil super genius

Lex Luther. Superman spends lots of time battling his

enemy and protecting innocent citizens!

• Popsicle Stick Superhero (Craft #3)

1. One person is the seeker and will close their eyes. The others will sit together in a circle or a line.

2. One person in the circle will hide the Popsicle Stick Superhero on them so that part of it is visible to the seeker.

3. The seeker is can open their eyes once the person hiding the Popsicle Stick Superhero is finished.

4. The seeker then has 1 minute to find the Popsicle Stick Superhero but cannot walk around to look for it.

5. The seeker yells “Pickle McSuper” when and if they Popsicle Stick Superhero is found.

If you do not have access to YouTube from home, write

your own questions you want to ask your favourite

superhero or interview someone who is your hero.

Batman has no superhuman powers. He does possess

super-intellect and is a master in martial arts!

Try coming up with different names other than Pickle

McSuper. Think of superhero themed names or

make up your own! Make it as crazy or as funny as

you would like.

Try writing a letter to your favourite superhero! Ask a

parent or guardian where to send the letter.

• ¾ cup of flour

• 2 balloons (1 green, 1 yellow)

• Funnel

• Ballpoint pen/black marker

1. Stretch out the yellow balloon by blowing it up and letting the air deflate.

2. Attach the funnel to the blowing end of the yellow balloon.

3. Pour the flour into the yellow balloon using a funnel.

4. Tie the yellow balloon.

5. Cut off the blowing end of the green balloon. Cut a slit in the middle of the green balloon. This will create the goggles for the ninja turtle.

6. Stretch the green balloon over the yellow balloon with the opening facing the opposite way.

7. Draw eyes and a smile with a ballpoint pen or black marker.

Use all of the coffee filters to create different monsters

for superheroes to fight off!

• Coffee filter

• Pipe cleaner

• Googly eyes

• Construction paper

• Crinkle paper

1. Colour the monster using markers.

2. Spray water on the coffee filter to create a diffusion. Set out to dry. TIP: Leaving it in the sun allows it to dry faster.

3. Use the supplies in the box to create different features for the monster. Be creative! You can use pipe cleaners for the mouth, eyebrows, arms and legs. Crinkle paper can be used for hair and construction paper for the nose, eyelids, glasses and other props!

4. Glue on the googly eyes.

Some monsters are actually very nice. Frankenstein

never did anything bad on purpose but was rather

misunderstood.

• Markers

• Scissors

• Glue

• Tape

Get a friend or family member and choose a room in

your house. Get one person to close their eyes while

the other person hides the ninja ball. See how long it

takes to find the ball!

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were named after

Renaissance artists. The creator saw an old art history

book and thought it would be funny to name them after

those artists.

Page 11: Camp in a Box It Documents/Recreation/Programs... · 2020. 8. 28. · also has an arch enemy which is the evil super genius Lex Luther. Superman spends lots of time battling his enemy

11

• Deck of cards

1. Pick a card from the deck. The suit determines what exercise you do and the number determines how many times you do that exercise. The exercises are:

• Squats = Diamonds

• Push-ups = Hearts

• Jumping Jacks = Spades

• Sit-ups = Clubs

Most superheroes train 5-7 days a week. They do this

because they are super strong and are more super

than the normal human.

• Superhero Charade Cards

• Timer

1. Divide into two even teams. Decide how many points are needed to win the game. (e.g. 10 points).

2. Play rock, paper, scissors to decide which team goes first.

3. The youngest player on the winning team chooses the first charade card from the top of the pile.

4. The timer starts and the team who is acting has 30 seconds to guess which superhero their player is acting out. If the team guesses it correctly, they get a point. Players can make superhero sound effects and do actions, however, they may not use words or say the superhero name.

5. After the 30 seconds, the youngest player on the opposing team chooses a charade card and repeats the same steps as above.

6. Make sure a different team member gets a chance to act out the charade card.

7. The first team that gets to the number of points designated at the beginning of the game wins!

Try Reverse Charades. This is regular Charades but

flipped. Instead of one person trying to help a group of

people to guess a word/phrase, the entire group works

together to communicate a word/phrase to one person.

For an extra challenging superhero workout, double

the amount of times you do each exercise. For

example: if you draw a 4 of spades, do 8 jumping jacks

instead of 4.

Spiderman

Batman

Page 12: Camp in a Box It Documents/Recreation/Programs... · 2020. 8. 28. · also has an arch enemy which is the evil super genius Lex Luther. Superman spends lots of time battling his enemy

12

This works best in a dark room and on a dark backdrop.

Decorate the outside of your box any way you would

like!

• Camp in a Box lid

• Bat signal template

• Colored construction paper

• Flashlight

• Tape

• Paint (optional)

1. Cut a small hole into the side of your box to fit a flashlight or cell phone light.

2. Across from that hole, cut a bigger hole the size of the bat stencil.

3. Tape the stencil over the biggest hole.

4. Shine your flashlight through the hole and watch the bat signal appear!

Find a dark room and a wall. Take off the batman

stencil and using the flashlight, make shadow puppets

with your hands.

The Avengers is home to some of Marvel’s strongest

heroes? Many of them are girl defenders of the Earth

and the Multiverse. The most powerful girl hero of the

Avengers is Captain Marvel. GIRL POWER!

Batman had his own special car that he drives around.

It is called the Batmobile!

Page 13: Camp in a Box It Documents/Recreation/Programs... · 2020. 8. 28. · also has an arch enemy which is the evil super genius Lex Luther. Superman spends lots of time battling his enemy

13

• Orbeez (villains)

• Cylinder container

• Water

1. Pour all the orbeez into the cylinder.

2. Fill the rest of the cylinder with water.

3. Watch as your test tube villains grow in size! They will be fully grown in 4 hours.

4. Once your villains are completely grown, you can carefully open the container and feel them! Make sure to put them back and close the lid so they don't leak!

When you do not need them anymore, you may be

wondering if it is possible to shrink them. The answer is

yes. Orbeez are reusable, which means that they can

shrink and then grow in water again . Fun!

The easiest way to shrink Orbeez is to leave them in

the sun. They will release the water and shrink to their

original size! Lay them out on a paper towel in the sun

and they should shrink back down into little beads!

Orbeez are super absorbent polymer beads made of

acrylic acid, sodium hydroxide and water. Colour

pigmentation is added to give more variety of nuances.

It is the water molecules that make Orbeez grow.

NEAT!

Add different things to your test tube to create your

coolest villain (e.g. food coloring, glitter, rocks, gems

etc.).

• Township of Tiny Recreation YouTube Channel

• All your disguise costumes

1. Tune into our Disguise 101 class, teaching you how to turn yourself into a superhero and then back into a disguised normal citizen.

2. Here are some key elements that can help you at home:

:

• Blanket capes: Tie a blanket around your neck and decorate it anyway you'd like.

• Eye masks: Use an old t-shirt to cut out a superhero mask (or use the one from the box).

• Utility belts: Use a belt to hang all your cool gadgets (rope, spray bottle, water gun, etc.).

• Fake muscles: Stuff a long sleeve shirt to make your muscles look bigger.

• Baking sheet shields: Decorate the back of a cookie sheet and use it as a bullet proof shield.

• Face paint: Paint your face to look like your favorite superhero.

• Fake or real glasses: Clark Kent (Superman) wore glasses to cover up his real identity! Put glasses on to look like someone else.

• Long dress coat/trench coat: Put a long coat to cover up your superhero suit.

• Dress clothes: Put your dress clothes over your super suit to disguise your identity.

• Wigs and ball caps: Put a wig or a hat on to cover up your hair.

• Briefcase: This will make you look less suspicious.

Every single superhero has a disguise. Each superhero

has a normal Identity and a super identity. Spiderman's

citizen name is Peter Parker and goes by Spiderman in

his superhero disguise.

Dress up in your superhero disguise and then in your

normal citizen disguise and see if your family members

recognize you!

Tiny Recreation Disguise 101

15

• Balloons

• String

• Glitter

• Shoes

• Funnel (optional)

1. Fill the balloon with glitter (using a funnel if you have one).

2. Blow up the balloon and tie the end of it (get a parent’s help if needed).

3. Tie the end of the blown up balloon to the end of the string.

4. To set up, tie a balloon to each player’s ankle with a short piece of string. There should be at least a few inches of string from the ankle to the balloon so the balloon can bounce along the ground.

5. Have all players carefully stand at the edges of a play area.

6. On “go,” all players rush forward and try to stomp each others balloons to pop them.

7. When your balloon pops, you’re eliminated from the game. Sit or stand along the sidelines and watch until there’s only one player remaining. The last person with a balloon around their ankle is winner!

No touching the balloons! No hands are allowed during

this game! This works best if all the players have their

hands behind their backs!

• Sock

1. To start, everyone puts on their socks but not all the way. Players put the socks over their toes but aren’t allowed to pull the socks up over their heels.

2. Everyone stands in a circle and someone says “go.” The object is simple: Step on the floppy part of other players’ socks to pull them off. When both of your socks are off, you’re eliminated from the game. The last player to keep one or both of their socks wins.

Helium balloons were also used on other planets. The

Russian space probes Vega 1 and Vega 2 used helium

balloons to drop scientific instruments into the

atmosphere of Venus in 1985. COOL!

Page 16: Camp in a Box It Documents/Recreation/Programs... · 2020. 8. 28. · also has an arch enemy which is the evil super genius Lex Luther. Superman spends lots of time battling his enemy
