I vividly remember driving to Navasota for my first week at Camp Allen. There were butterflies in my stomach as a million thoughts raced through my head. Who would I share a bunk with? Were we going to go horseback riding? I really hope they have milk and cookies.

When you’re young, you focus on day to day things like that. My entire day revolved around going to the blob and trying to get double canteen at archery. Now that I’m older, it’s so clear to see that those small activities were forming big memories and even bigger friendships.

Camp Allen was where I learned to conquer my fears and grew outside of my comfort zone. I met the best, dearest lifelong friends -- there were girls in my cabin ten years ago that I still talk to every day! It was also the first place I was shown what a rela-tionship with Jesus Christ looked like. I credit so much of my walk with God to Camp Allen.

As a member of Senior Staff this past summer and currently as one of the camp pho-tographers, I have the awesome opportunity to watch thousands of campers experi-ence the power of spending a week at camp. Every day, these kids grew in community and were challenged mentally, physically and spiritually. The amount of growth I see each week is unfathomable, and reminds me there’s a lot more transpiring at camp than four square and silly songs.

Camp Allen is changing lives for the better. I see empowerment in a child’s eyes when they make it to the top of the iceberg for the first time. A camper’s cabin mates and counselors are cheering them on, and everyone at the lake turns to watch this camp-er slide down the smooth side of the iceberg for the first time ever. Man, that kid feels like he’s on top of the world.

Our big moments happen when we step outside of what is familiar and are led by community. Proverbs 27:17 says “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens an-other.” I cannot think of a more powerful tool that shapes, sharpens and molds our souls than the family found at Camp Allen. Here’s to the weird, messy activities that can only be found at camp and to the lives that have been made better because of them.

CHANGING LIVES- ONE BLOB AT A TIMEBy Samantha Mahler, Summer Camp Senior Staffer

People often tell us how special Camp Allen is and how this place has inspired them and shaped their lives. What does Camp Allen mean to you? Do you love this place because it has fueled your spiritual growth or helped you develop as a leader? Do you have vivid memories of camp friends or retreat activities or special gatherings? Do you love this place for its extraordinary natural beauty and serenity?

Whatever your reasons for loving and appreciating Camp Allen, we are asking you to “leaf your legacy” by making a gener-ous gift to the Centennial Fund. Your support will help us complete 21 projects that will make it possible for Camp Allen to serve more campers and visitors and further enhance our operations. One of the largest projects – building Campsite 4 – is now underway. Another – constructing an All Camp Dining Hall – will begin as we reach our goal.

Will you help Camp Allen bring these projects to fruition?

All Centennial Fund donors who make (or have previously made) campaign gifts above $750 will be recognized by having their names engraved on leaves that will form a beautiful pine tree grove sculpture in our Conference Center. Gift levels will be represented by different colored leaves, as explained below.

We would be delighted to include your name, or the names of those you would like to remember or honor through your gift, on the trees. Construction will begin soon, so please make your “leaf a legacy” gift today using the enclosed envelope or at campallen.org.

As always, we are deeply grateful to you for supporting Camp Allen and believing so strongly in our mission.

Sincerely,

George DehanCamp Allen President

Page 4: Camp Allen

There is a buzz of excitement at Camp Allen. This is always a special time of year because summer camp is in full swing, but this year’s excitement is amplified by the sounds of hammers and saws that signal bunkhouse construction of Campsite 4. The dream of expanding camp to serve more students, families, and organizations is finally coming to fruition.

Campsite 4 will increase our summer camp capacity by 600 camp-ers and make it possible for us to host many more groups annu-ally. We really need this additional capacity. Already many of this summer’s camp sessions are full or have wait lists, and our confer-ence center and hotel are filled to the brim, with spaces booking three years in advance.

Campsite 4 is one of the major enhancements made possible by the Centennial Fund. To date, we have raised over $11 million, with a final goal of $12.3 million. Our board has led the way with commitments of over $1.7 million to the campaign. Generous

donors also include camper parents, clergy, churches, founda-tions, and many thoughtful individuals. Reaching our Centen-nial Fund goal is an urgent priority, and time is of the essence. Why? If we begin work on our all-camp dining hall and get key infrastructure elements underway by August of this year, we will be able to open Campsite 4 in time for our 2021 summer sea-son. Additionally, keeping the construction team on site without interruption allows us to save $300,000! In short, reaching our Centennial Fund goal THIS SUMMER is the key to keeping costs low and being ready to open our doors to more campers as we celebrate our 100th anniversary.

In addition to the Giving Tree, there are donor recognition opportuni-ties available for those who would like to associate their gifts with el-ements of Campsite 4 or other special places at Camp Allen. Naming options range from outdoor chapel benches ($10,000), bunk rooms, hotel wings, dining rooms, and beyond. To learn more, contact the Office of Development at 936-825-7175 or [email protected].

YOUR GIFTS AT WORK

Page 9: Camp Allen

YOUR GIFTS AT WORKThanks to the support of those listed throughout this publication, Camp Allen provided scholarships to 3,079 children (school students and summer campers) totaling approximately $155,000 last year – and we are already seeing the need for scholarship assistance increas-ing this year as we continue expanding our programming to serve a broader cross-section of our surrounding cities. To date in 2019, over $120,000 in scholarship assistance has been awarded.

While quantifiable performance results are essential, especially in education, many of the benefits of the Discovery Program simply can-not be charted. They are measured by the look in a child’s eyes when they feel the texture of a snake’s skin. They are measured by the giddy squeals when a chicken from the organic garden eats feed out of a student’s hand. They are measured in the stillness, when a student sits among their classmates gazing at the expanse of a star filled sky. The benefits are beyond test scores, as the goal is to truly bring classroom learning to life. The educational impact of the Discovery Program is powerful; and we are diligent about providing more opportunities for underserved schools to attend Discovery.

For his 18 year tenure, Camp Allen’s President, George Dehan’s great-est joy is personally greeting each camper family car as they leave Camp Allen with their happy (and tired) camper Saturday morn-ing. He watches the primary camper clutching their session photo in the backseat, the middler camper describing every detail of Bed-lam, and the misty eyed Jr. High camper who wasn’t ready to leave her camp friends. At the conclusion of the first week this summer, a camper rolled down her window exclaiming, “Camp Allen was better than my birthday party!” Behind all the smiles and the bag of dirty laundry is a child that has had a profound faith experience.

Your generosity provided scholarships, programming support, and Starry Nights “Wish List” items ranging from Archery Tag courses to horse saddles. Thank you for enabling the joy, growth, and educa-tional opportunities for so many children. We are humbled by your support!

Have you considered Camp Allen for your planned giving? The Legacy Fund was established to honor Rosa Lum Allen and her significant contributions to Camp Allen. Rosa and her family be-queathed their summer home to the Episcopal Diocese which made it possible for the first summer camp session to be held. As Rosa’s legacy continues in our growing facility and programs, we ask that you consider supporting our planned giving efforts to benefit gen-erations to come. To include a gift to Camp Allen in your will or liv-ing trust, please contact the Development office for official bequest language.

By Bonnie Walton, Camp Allen Trustee

“Do I get a top bunk? Do we have a bedtime? Can I get candy and a soda at canteen? What was your favorite part of camp?”

My 8 year old’s favorite pastime this spring has been skipping cir-cles around me as we walk the block, peppering me with ques-tions about what to expect at his first session of camp this June. I remember similarly interrogating my brother.

“What was the worst part about camp?”

Despite the memory of sand in my shoes and towels that never quite dry completely, the real an-swer is easy: “Having to leave.”

From my first experience as a primary camper, the desire to stay connected to our Camp Al-len community was tangible. Like so many, I returned as often as I could, eventually becoming a counselor, then senior staff. And for most of us, that was it.

This spring, I had the privilege of joining 35 other Camp Allen alumni, at our first Rosalums Volunteer Weekend at Camp-site 3. We were a multigenerational group, from graduates to grandparents. Together we braved the pollen and the poison ivy, as we lopped our way through the brush, laughing at each other and agreeing that everyone needs a Paul Vickery in the woods.

The weekend was the latest event in our inaugural year, which has included all manner of activities from brewery tours to fam-ily stargazing. Most importantly, Rosalums is creating a bridge in the Camp Allen experience, providing continuity in our com-munity—a way to stay connected to camp and to each other. Come join us. It’s good to be back.
