Students Displaying Depression Online Best Approached In-Person, Study Finds

9/11/2014 | Cameron Morgan, US National Library of Medicine | [email protected]

MADISON, Wisconsin -- Over 30 percent of all college students have reported a time that they felt so depressed that they could hardly function. More than 6 percent have felt so depressed that they have contemplated suicide.

One common trend that has recently been seen is that some students dealing with feelings of depression post

about their feelings on social media, such as Facebook. A recent study conducted by scientists, Jennifer Whitehill, Libby Brockman and Megan Moreno, examined what actions students who post about being depressed are most

receptive to.

By conducting interviews with 60 college freshmen, this study has found that the most desired intervention in the case of public displays of depression is being approached in-person by a family member or close friend.

“All the students interviewed said that if a friend approached them and asked how they were feeling, they would

accept their intervention and open up to them,” says Whitehill, a scientist at Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center of the University of Washington.

Over 93 percent of respondents said that they would accept an in-person intervention of a known adult, such as a

professor or resident adviser. However, only approximately half of the students would accept an approach from a stranger. Moreover, the majority of those who would accept a stranger’s intervention would prefer the contact to

occur through e-mail or through a shared friend.

“While an in-person approach works great if the student and the intervener have a previous relationship, a third-party approach is better received by students when contacted by a stranger about their situation,” says Brockman, a

researcher in the department of public health at the University of Washington School of Public Health, “The majority of students simply do not feel comfortable telling complete strangers about their feelings.”

The study, “‘Just Talk to Me’: Communicating With College Students About Depression Disclosures on Facebook,”

was originally published in the Journal of Adolescent Health in January 2013.# # #

The Cost of Fresh Produce Among Causes of Obesity, Researchers Claim

9/11/2014 | Cameron Morgan, US National Library of Medicine | [email protected]

RALEIGH, North Carolina -- Obesity: the leading cause of illness and a major contributor to chronic disease. Scientists have proven that eating fresh fruits and vegetables can greatly reduce risk of obesity and its complications.

So why don’t more people simply eat more fresh produce?

A recent study conducted in North Carolina identifies six major community-level obstacles that prevented people from

obtaining fruits and vegetables: cost, transportation, quality, variety, changing food environment and changing societal norms on food.

The study analyzed eight focus groups in two North Carolina counties, with a total of 68 low-income participants. Over

60 percent of the participants were black, female and possessed a high school education or less. Over half received governmental support to help purchase groceries and food supplies.

“The most common circumstance is that grocers in low-income communities charge less for food with lower nutritional

values than they do for fresh produce,” says Sarah Parson, a researcher at Duke University, “People buy ‘junk food’ instead of healthier options simply because it is cheaper.”

Quality was especially a concern in low-income communities. The majority of participants preferred high-quality fruits

and vegetables, but reported a lack of quality in their area.

“People attribute produce quality with the manner it is presented in stores,” says Lindsey Haynes-Maslow, scientist in the department of health policy and management at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, “This deters many

people from even trying the foods because they look unappetizing in the stores.”

The study concludes that policymakers should consider supporting programs that decrease the cost and increase the supply of high-quality fruits and vegetables in low-income communities. This is a step that could eliminate many barriers

that prevent people from accessing proper nutrition from healthy produce.

This study, “A Qualitative Study of Perceived Barriers to Fruit and Vegetable Consumption Among Low-Income Populations,” was originally published in Preventing Chronic Disease in 2013.

Meet Headington Hall’s Newest Hire5/06/2014 | Cameron Morgan, Headington Hall Happenings | [email protected]

NORMAN, Oklahoma -- Growing up close enough to hear the cars tear around the turns at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama, Shae Mann is no stranger to fast-paced action.

Now, recently hired as a housing coordinator at Headington Hall, Shae has quickly adjusted to life in her new environment.

“It’s always good to be busy, ‘cause you’ve got to experience life, not just let it pass you by,” Shae says.

And, from attending Barack Obama’s first inauguration to her passion of seeing people overcome obstacles, it is easy to see how fully Shae experiences life.

Shae grew up in Munford, Ala. Her housing experience began when she became a resident adviser in her sophomore year at Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Ala.

Upon receiving her bachelor’s degree in political science with an English minor, Shae sought her master’s in public administration with an emergency management concentration at JSU.

During graduate school, Shae became the assistant residence life coordinator, worked alongside the coordinator and filled in for him when he found another job, Shae says. !

When she graduated in 2013, Shae says she intended to become a lobbyist, but she quickly changed her mind after going through the interview process. She then decided that she wanted to work in housing and began applying at universities.

She didn’t search long before she was hired as a housing coordinator for Headington Hall.

“The fact that she has six years of residence life experience all the way from R.A. up to residence life coordinator is what really drew Micah and I to her when we were hiring,” says Bryan Hinnen, director of operations at Headington Hall.

“She brings a different approach, a different perspective to this job that complements well,” says Micah Beatty, housing coordinator at Headington Hall.

Beatty and Hinnen describe Shae as driven, vibrant, creative, passionate, trustworthy and someone who doesn’t allow people to settle but pushes them in a positive way.

Shae says that the hardest part of her job is disciplining.

“I can do it fairly well, but it’s not my favorite part,” Shae says.

In fact, her favorite part is being creative and having fun, Shae says.

“I like getting to pass out ice cream and chat or getting to see people bring in scorpions or plant a cactus in a program,” Shae says.

Outside of Headington Hall, Shae is a member of the Oklahoma City alumni chapter of Delta Zeta and is a sorority adviser in new member education at the Delta Zeta chapters at JSU and Oklahoma City University. She also currently teaches a section of the R.A. class and will teach a gateway class section in fall 2014.

Despite the fast pace of life and the many things Shae is involved in, she says that she wants to leave an impact.

“I want to be remembered as a caring, loving person that’s outgoing. Someone who wanted to take the time to make everyone know that somebody loves them and somebody cares about them,” Shae says.

Finally, at this point in her life, Shae says, “I think I’ve found where I’m supposed to be.”
