About An American RequiemCommissioned in 1993 by the Art Renaissance Foundation, James DeMars produced

this amazing work with the hope that it would contribute to bringing the American com-munity together. Hugely ambitious and soundly constructed, the 75-minute choral worktook a full year to be written and orchestrated. It is a stylistically eclectic, strongly ap-proachable offering in four parts, interpolating English and Latin texts in an attempt to re-flect the diversity of our nation’s cultural and religious life.

“ At the close of last night’s premiere performance therecould have been little doubt that James DeMars had metthe standards of the deathmasses of Brahms and Britten;grand and spacious, stately, ethereal, glorious, inspired andquintessentially American. Itspeaks of untarnished dreamsand naïve yearnings; an intensely hopeful conjuration of all that is best about the nation’s peoples.”— Washington Post
