Debuting in September 2011, eighteen months af- ter Jim’s death, the Jack & Jim Gallery—housed in Austin City Limits Live at Moody Theater, the new state-of-the-art concert facility in downtown Austin—is the result of the collaboration of Jack Daniel’s, Austin City Limits and Jim Marshall Photography LLC. The exhibit features thirty onstage and candid shots of music icons and two themed display cases of music memorabilia from Jim’s personal collection. An homage to American traditions in music history and a celebration of the spirit and history of modern music genres as captured by the master lensman, the gallery is also a testament to the longstanding mutual admiration between Jim and Jack Daniel’s. Jim’s relationship with Jack Daniel’s began in the ‘60s, when Jim took comfort in Old No. 7 during his travels following the music with his camera on oft lonely roads. In those travels he found a trio of like-minded friends: Mick Jagger and Keith Richards—whose affinity for Old No. 7 is secured in their larger-than-life images on display at the gallery—and Janis Joplin—whose love of Jack Daniel’s Southern Comfort is legendary and frozen in time by Jim’s camera. Her now- iconic pose snapped by Jim, that of a semi-reclining figure embracing the bottle, was reproduced in a gorgeous mural, fittingly positioned on the gallery wall next to the Jack Daniel’s bar. As noted, Jim’s fondness for Jack Daniel’s was not a one-sided affair. For years Jack Daniel’s (the company), a huge fan and collector of Jim’s work, sought a venue in which the two friends could partner. Sadly, that was not to be in Jim’s lifetime. But with the opening of the Moody Theater in February 2011, three aficionados of whisky, music and Jim’s photography found a home in which to welcome old and new friends of Jim’s work. The Jack & Jim Gallery is open to the public through Fall 2014, marking it as the most comprehensive and longest-running public showing of Jim’s work to date.
