In a rare interview granted to thisnewspaper Irina Kudrenok-Ablakova-Mappin gives us insight into her expansivestrategy for Camelot.

“Our early family ancestors wereamong the educators that imparted and endued the spirit ofcreativity into the Ruling Houses of Russia. My ancestor HisNoble Excellency Ablak was educated in Cairo in the wis-doms of Eastern aesthetic science and brought that wisdomback to Russia. He was the teacher and venerated wise advi-sor to the Tsarina Sujumbike (1516-1564) and the Court ofIvan IV Vasilyevich, the first Ruler to be crowned as “Tsar ofall Russia” and better known in history as Ivan the Terrible.Into that court His Noble Excellency Ablak endued the piv-otal ideas of beauty that would come to shape the style of anation. The construction of the city St Petersburg and much

of the beauty of Moscow and Russia is today a testimony tothat work and the powerful philosophy that we as a familyhave maintained and continue to forward.”

“Our forefathers upheld the importance of beauty, aesthet-ics and its relationship to life, and our family have fosteredinto being a higher quality of communication for centuries.My grandfather, Commissar Ablakov, who was one of thefew members of the Russian intelligentsia to speak and writefluent Arabic, helped the governing bodies of his area shapethe country now known as Kazakhstan and other parts ofthe broader Soviet Union. (In his time part of the area nowknown as Kazakhstan was known as the “Virgin Lands”and was part of the Soviet Union). Even at the height ofcommunist rule and while my grandfather was a SeniorSoviet Official he maintained his international connections

and contacts all over the worldand right across Soviet Russia.He was known and loved forthe quality of his letters andoverall quality of his commu-nication. ”

OUR STORY, my dear readers, sees us backin time, a time perhaps many would care toforget and a few adventurous souls mightcare to remember.

On a bleak snowy day in 1788, Paris,France outside the Bastille to be precise, aday when the sky was so grey and theground so white, that any meeting placebetween the two is only afforded by amoment of clear weather which comes withthe turning of the wind. The chill in the airmatches the lonely bare ground and that atbest offers up silence with angular shapes tocomfort the constant pain of hunger thathangs like the foretold death of a child. Notfar off the North West turret, a single pair ofravens circle in the air, a silhouette againstthe melting snow which covers this unyield-ing and blighted landscape.

Our two characters have been impris-oned for five years inside the Parisian hellthey called the Bastille. This site had previ-ously been a swamp. In the dank bowels ofthis once princely fortress had been held thetreasures of the mighty Kings of Francealong with Nobles, of whom it is said, thatif at the late hour of alcoholic murmur hadmerely a thought of Royal discontent, wouldawaken to their horror, imprisoned, on theother side of this unforgiving Rubicon.

This paradox of regal delight and adilemma posing as an equally delicious

source of scandal and rumor mongering,was in its part, the very oil needed for thesmoother running of the otherwise deadlydull and unproductive life at court.

However, over the last few years theBastille had fallen into dilapidation and dis-repute which had matched the royal pittanceof a grant long since diverted by the gaolerbefore its arrival at the squalid gates. So,somewhere between the snow falling, thegaoler sleeping and France on the brink ofstarvation, we find our characters entombedin the granite mausoleum they called theBastille.

Now, it so happened, that it was the cus-tom that each day at noon that some pris-oners were allowed from their cells to walka certain large passage that stretched fromone long side to the other. Off this corridorthere was a sequence of cells holding pris-oners who had committed high treason andhad been in solitary confinement for so longthat no one had ever had site of them. It hadbeen a punishable offence to try and speakwith them but over the years the guards hadbecome more and more discontented andlazy to the point where every day for nearlyeighteen months the young poet had beenable to sit down outside the cast iron doorfor the hour to converse with the painter.

Each day the poet would sit and listen tothe painter, encouraging him to give tell of

the view from his window, for none of theother cells in that cell block had an outsidefacing window. The only site afforded tothem was of the courtyard in the centre ofthe Prison below. The painter woulddescribe the weather each day, with sun onthe moat below framing the ducks and thegeese, children playing with their dogs orsinging an array of songs. The painter wentto great lengths to describe the colours of theladies and gentlemen’s dress, the walkingsticks and, once a month, the passing circusthat crossed the river Seine for the centre ofParis. The circus animals were often newand exotic. Market days were particularlyinteresting to the poet, for twice a week, allthe farmers with their cattle, crops, geeseand sheep would be described in minutedetail, with the abstract air of the paintersprose.

Over the months their friendship andbond had grown to the point where thepainter felt comfortable in enquiring of thepoet the true reason for his incarceration.That day, much like any other, the painterasked the poet why he was in prison, towhich he replied that he had written some-thing that the Queen had found a littledirect. The poet then asked the painter howhe had managed to end up in that situationto which the painter responded that he hadpainted the King in a way that he saw him,which the King had found insulting, he hadordered the canvas to be destroyed and the

painter sent to prison.

The following day at the usual time thepoet sat outside the cell door and quietlycalled for his friend. There was however noreply. The poet wandered slowly over to thegaoler’s guard and asked him who was inthe cell. The guard responded that a pardonhad come through the previous evening andthat now no one was there. The poet wasshocked, and as he caught his breath, com-manded that if he were to continue writingthe gaoler’s letters to his mistress he wouldpersonally wish to see that the cell wasindeed empty for himself. Whereupon, theguard, without hesitation lifted up his bunchof keys and escorted the poet to the cell. Hethen placed the key into the top and bottomlocks and with a mighty push opened thecast iron door.

It was indeed empty.

The poet stepped into the cell and look-ing at the four plain stone walls... gasped...for there was no window.

The Bastille fell a few months later givingfreedom to all.

The poets name was Francois-MarieArouet.

Some now know him as the great writerVoltaire.

THE WALLS OF CAMELOT CASTLE this spring andsummer will be adorned with paintings that someare calling the most priceless expression of beautyever to have been created by an artist in the last500 years.

And, while the prices of Stourton continueto rise fortunes may be made by some who aregetting behind the Stourton phenomenon andbeginning to stock his work, Stourton remainscompletely unaffected by the clamour andglamorous admirers that continue to seek his workout from all over the world.

Indeed the local Newquay airport isgetting quite used to the roar of Gulfstream jetengines as Stourton’s private collectors arrivefrom the far flung corners of the globe.

To try to describe the beauty of Stourton’sabstract realism in these works is a challenge thatI will not attempt here as I simply cannot do it

justice. However what I can tell you is that artcritics from around the world have nearlyunanimously acknowledged that beauty such asthis has not been created and viewed since thetime that Claude Monetdressed his salon in Paris; norhas the excitement that isbrewing in the art world beenso great concerning theproduction of an artist sincePicasso was creating in hisprime.

Each day Stourton canbe found in his subterraneanstudios at Camelot Castle andeach day a team of production assistants andcraftsmen work on an intense schedule to simplykeep up with the extraordinary creative flow andoutput that emanates from this one being, whosedestiny it seems is to raise the bar on beauty thateach being experiences as they come into contact

with his work.

“What a view” as one collector described,“to see all the wonders of paradise and beyond,

through the work”.

Stourton’s recent master piece dominatesthe Great Hall at Camelot Castle. Acolourful joy to behold, it is arepresentation and celebration of the circleof life and both the perfections andimperfections of the friendships therein.

IT APPEARS THAT THERE ARE TWO PRIMARYPYRAMIDS OF INFORMATION, KNOWLEDGE ORDATA IN THIS UNIVERSE.

The first is THE PYRAMID OF TRUTH which isarranged axiomatically from the truest truthknown to man and descends or ascends (depend-ing on where one starts and one’s direction oftravel) in a pyramidal axiomatic codification ofnatural law and maps the full hierarchy of truthso far known by mankind.

Each truth in the PYRAMID OF TRUTH isranked by its survival value so naturally thehighest truth on the pyramid would have a high-er survival value than a lower truth.

Man has been aware of this primary pyra-mid for some years now and it can be accessedrather easily by those who are interested in thetruth.

However there is a second pyramid thatalso exists in the world today and that man inter-acts with regularly.

We call this:

THE PYRAMID OF LIES

It may strike you as quite normal that when wevisit the movies we don’t generally leave dis-gruntled because the film was not an accurate orentirely honest depiction of life.

It is accepted that such entertainment is fic-tion. And, that some fictions have a benign pur-pose.

Fictions are partly or totally a lie, and assuch reside in the Pyramid of Lies. That they maybe benign in full or in part does not excuse themfrom the pyramid of lies.

What you may or may not have consideredis that all such lies are part of a gradient scale orhierarchy and are arranged axiomatically and bytheir importance to life.

There is indeed a hierarchy of stories.

To put it simply some stories are told morethan others and some stories carry better and fur-ther and are more appealing to mankind.

There are differing qualities of stories and ofcommunications.

We are sure you may have noticed this.

The story of Camelot Castle, King Arthur,The Knights of the Round Table and the Search

for the Holy Grail is iconic for many reasonsbut it is interesting to note that no other storyis told from one man to another man moreoften across all of history than this Arthurianstory.

The Arthurian story traveled by word ofmouth for over 600 years before it was writtendown and is now told by Hollywood, the homeof modern storytellers, every year, year in yearout. It is retold more than any other story andfilmed in varying ways using varying har-monies, rhythms and systems.

The Arthurian story has been told onearth many billion times.

Some time ago we isolated why this was.

It seems that this particular story, mir-roring and acting as a harmonic for mankind'ssearch for truth, as embodied in the story ofthe Arthurian search for the Holy Grail, touch-es a basic chord of Freedom and a basic nobil-ity in the individual, both in a storyteller andin an audience, in a way that no other storyever has in man’s history.

And, for that reason, the ARTHURIANMYTH has come to occupy a primary positionat the very top of the PYRAMID OF LIES.

IT IS THE PRIME MYTH and in thatcapacity it serves and illuminates all othermyths.

THE ARTHURIAN MYTH, more than anyother, acts and serves to control, strengthenand weaken, increase or decrease the “HOPENEXUS” in the environment and perhaps mostimportantly in the mind of mankind. And asthis story perpetuates and is transferred frommind to mind using whatever medium, it main-tains and represents the very simple but valu-able idea:

“The Idea that “Truth” might exist.”

This idea in essence is the embodiment of hope.

When one looks at the Icon of KINGARTHUR, perhaps taking a longer term view ofculture than most are used to, one notes that hehas a powerful celebrity and a vast sphere ofinfluence and has become over the centuries aGlobal Icon that represents core values and cher-ished elements of freedom that in today’s materi-al world are becoming even more valued due totheir scarcity.

It is likely that in one thousand years thestory of King Arthur and his Knights and their

search for the Grail will still be told.

It is less likely that we will be discussingmany of the modern subjects of today’s mediaattention.

It is a simple extrapolation to understandthat in the game of “Quality of Communication”the Icons of our Culture play a major role.

A true ICON has the capacity to boom anarea by causing attention to land on a particulartruth or it has the capacity to send an area intooblivion by causing attention of those in the areato land on non-survival or less helpful factors.

To understand the power of an Icon intoday’s culture one needs to look no further thanthe Royal Wedding of the House of Windsor inApril 2011 that caused over two billion people totune into their televisions at the same time.

For that period the House of Windsor con-trolled the attention of two billion.

We have seen what a drug promoting popstar can do to the life of a child or to a fan baseand conversely what great leadership can do to awhole culture. We have seen governmentschange through social media.

All the reasons above are the reasons thatat Camelot Castle we are focused on helpingNEW Icons come into being.

UNLOCKING THE DOOR TOARTISTIC VIABILITY.How can I survive or make itdoing the thing that I lovedoing the most?How could I truly survivebetter by being an artist?

These two questions are probably thetwo most often asked questions of thecreatively inclined and sadly these arethe two main questions that are com-pletely ignored at Art Schools aroundthe world or at Film Schools or gener-ally at any other school that teachesthe artistic disciplines.

The truth is most Art and Filmschool teachers simply don’t know theanswer.

Such schools focus in on what tocreate as an art form and how to tech-nically create that form which in ourexperience, save the basic necessity ofknowing technically how to createone’s art form, is actually the furthestthing away from an artist’s mind on adaily basis.

True artists tend to know thesethings already or with practice and loveof their art form will be able to achievethose technical abilities for themselvesin time. But how to be viable is some-thing that is very often completelyunknown by an artist.

We are often asked what is it thatwe are doing to help artists and HOWexactly is it that we achieve this. Thisshort explanation is a bit like trying tosum up a lifetime of experience in afew sentences but, we hope it helpsyou understand how it is that veryoften as a result of a visit to CamelotCastle an artist’s future success can beimmeasurably changed for the better.Often by just one introduction to theright person.

In one sentence....We helpartists become VIABLE.

For an artist, in livinglife, as well as being cre-ative, MUST have excel-lent entrepreneurial andadministrative skills andMUST understand the fac-tors that make him or herviable andwill result in an increas-ing income that is greaterthan their outgoings.

BRING ME SUNSHINE is the new music videofrom UK’s Number One Jive and Swing band TheJive Aces. The video has started an enormousbuzz on youtube and had over 50,000 views inthe first week and has now had over 1 millionviews.

In the lavishly produced five-minute moviepromoting their new single, the band hijack adoom-laden TV newscast and cheer up viewerswith their jived-up version of the Morecambe &Wise classic.

Lead singer Ian Clarkson said: "It is a veryprofessional video that everyone enjoys watchingand has this effect of making you feel good. Nowonder it is the fastest moving rock'n'roll or jivevideo on YouTube. It's another chance to get some

good music out there and noticed by the averagepunter, spreading sunshine in a time of 'doomand gloom' and maybe even cutting through thestupor created by the endless stream of Britain'sGot Talent and X-Factor winners and runnersup."

THE PURPOSE OFCAMELOT CASTLE

Our purpose in creating Camelot Castle is to have a place whereanyone who agrees that life can be enhanced by natural beauty andart can come and experience that enhancement immediately and firsthand.

Camelot has the purpose to provide a unique space where people cancome to share both in the extraordinary natural beauty of our envi-ronment and in the extraordinary strength created when people ofgoodwill share their ideas and vision.

In c.800 A.D. Haroun Al Rashid, the supreme ruler of Baghdad, gov-erned and administrated the entire Arab world.

At that time, Haroun Al Rashid, the conceptual architect of the first“Golden Age”, passed a law. That law stated, that every Thursday,every Master of every intellectual or physical discipline, be itMathematics, Architecture, Religious, Political, or Creative mustattend court and Al Rashid stated that, by law, they should and mustshare their ideas. This one act caused a ripple of innovation and newideas that spread across the Arabic world and Mesopotamian cultureup through Spain and half of Europe. Indeed, ideas that occurred thenare still visible today across the civilised world.

What was only known by a handful of people until today was the factthat Haroun Al Rashid also issued every law and every order to hisempire using Formal Arabic Poetry.

As early as 800 A.D. Haroun Al Rashid had isolated the power of theuse of aesthetics and beauty in carrying a message across thousandsof miles and great distances.

For this reason, the poets and artists of Baghdad were some of thegreatest that the world has ever known. The Arabian Nights were writ-ten in his honour and Harun is immortalized in them. Haroun AlRashid was probably one of the greatest champions of creativity thatthe world has ever seen.

There are two other well known non-religious occasions in recent his-tory, when men have risen to this extraordinary level of responsibilityand wisdom. The first was the formation of the Round Table at theCourt of Arthur Pendragon on the advice of Merlin, which cracked thesuppression of the Dark Ages across Europe. The other was thestructure and codification of the American Constitution by theFounding Fathers.

The Founders of Camelot have been able to research deeper into thewisdoms of the East than ever before. They have been able to drawon the modern and workable wisdom embodied in the freedomsestablished and maintained by the United States. And, through uniqueaccess and friendships in the Middle East the Founders have isolatedsome previously unguessed at importances, heralded by Arabic cul-ture, that will affect the entire future of mankind.

Hā rū n al-Rashīd (Arabic: and Persian:نوراه ديشرلا also spelled HarounAl Rashid; English: Aaron the Upright, Aaron the Just, or Aaron theRightly-Guided; March 17, 763 – March 24, 809) was the fifth and mostfamous Abbasid Caliph. He was born in Rayy, near Tehran, Iran, andlived in Baghdad, Iraq and most of his reign in Ar Raqqah at the middleEuphrates.

He ruled from 786 to 809, and his time was marked by scientific, cultur-al and religious prosperity. Art and music also flourished significantlyduring his reign. He established the library Bayt al-Hikma ("House ofWisdom").

Since Harun was intellectually, politically and militarily resourceful, his life and the courtover which he held sway have been the subject of many fictional tales: some are factualbut most are believed to be fictitious. An example of what is known to be factual is thestory of the Clock that was among various presents that Harun had delightfully sent toCharlemagne. The presents were carried by the returning Frankish mission that came tooffer Harun friendship in 799. LOSING A CHILD is a tragedy. Losing a childneedlessly is a crime. Ten-year-old HarryHucknall exemplifies this. In March, WestCumbria Coroner Ian Smith found that Harry,the cousin of Simply Red singer Mick Hucknall,had hanged himself while taking an antidepres-sant fluoxetine (Prozac) and Ritalin. The postmortem-tests revealed Harry had above the nor-mal therapeutic level of the antidepressant givento adults. “This was not suicide for one minute,”the coroner determined. “I record that Harry diedas a consequence of his own actions withoutunderstanding their true consequences.”

Harry’s death is not an isolated case, whichis why in 2003 the Medicines and Healthcareproducts Regulatory Agency (MHRA) ruled thatantidepressants should not be prescribed tothose younger than 18 years old. The U.S. Foodand Drug Administration (FDA) issued the samewarning a year later. A year too late for 17-yearold Matthew Steubing prescribed Lexapro forusual teenage angst. The avid sportsman com-mitted suicide eight weeks later.

Matthew’s death sparked a mother’s searchfor the truth about antidepressants to discoverthe information that she and Matthew had beendenied. Information that had Celeste Steubingknown, Matthew would be alive today. Andeven, perhaps, Harry.

Dead Wrong: How Psychiatric Drugs CanKill Your Child is a compelling film produced byaward-winning documentary makers for the

Citizens Commission on Human Rights(CCHR), an acclaimed international psychiatricwatchdog group established by the Church ofScientology in 1969.

Of course, one could reasonably expect Mrs.Steubing should have been able to get the factsfrom a responsible drug company or psychia-trist, but the reasons she could-n’t are very much a part of thestory you see in Dead Wrongand hardly surprising whenyou consider statistics.

The number of school-children prescribed antidepres-sants and mind-altering drugshas more than quadrupled inthe last decade in the UK.Under-16s were given drugs for“psychiatric” problems morethan 631,000 times in 2006,compared to just 146,000 in themid-Nineties.

Use of Ritalin, known as the “chemicalcosh,” have doubled in just four years and isnearly 100 times greater than in the earlyNineties. Doctors dispensed 254,000 prescrip-tions for the drug last year, up from 208,500 in2001,according to figures from the PrescriptionPricing Authority.

And therein lies the greater reason for par-ents being denied the facts. Psychiatrists and

others prescribing the drug rake in a prettypenny. Ritalin costs between £200 and £1,000per year per child, depending on the dose andfollow up assessments. NHS spending on thedrug between 1999 and 2003 alone more thantrebled from about £251,000 to £786,000.

Parents are also not informed that the “psy-chiatric” disorders for which thesedrugs are prescribed cannot be med-ically confirmed with any physicaltest as medical conditions can. NHSadmits, “There is no cure for atten-tion deficit hyperactivity disorder….”

Brian Daniels, UK spokespersonfor CCHR, said, “Parents deserve toknow the truth. The facts in DeadWrong can help protect children andtheir families. There are alternativesto mind-altering and potentiallylethal drugs and parents need todemand to be informed of these.”

Mrs. Steubing adds, “We hope that by shar-ing Matthew’s story, other families will be sparedthe devastating heartbreak we live with everyday.”

FRIEND OF CAMELOT CASTLE AND ICON OF THE FUTURE HILDA VAN DER MEULENhas been a Friend of Camelot for many years and has both helped Camelot and beenhelped by the expansion of the creative projects that Camelot helps and promotes.

Today Hilda is sitting at the peak of what has become one of the most excitingEntertainment careers in Europe. She has a string of film productions to her nameand on the production slate and she is respected in an industry where one’s stripesare hard earned.

With unique insight into private fundraising and government funding systemsfor films across Europe, Hilda is both director of a Dutch International FilmProduction Company and an actress in several Hollywood and EuropeanProductions. She has indeed managed to bridge that sometimes hard to negotiategap between the creative world of film and television both behind and in front ofthe Camera and the financial and business end of what can be a very competitiveindustry, even if you have beauty, talent and win the title of Miss Holland at the ten-der age of eighteen.

Endemol is of course well known in the UK as the originator and producer ofBig Brother and grandfather of reality TV, but it was John de Mol himself (founderof Endemol) who first noticed Hilda's ability when she won Miss Holland as anaspiring model and actress....Now a few years on and with the help of her friendsin the entertainment industry in Hollywood and across the film capitals of Europeher star continues to rise to new heights.

What few in the film world knew until recently, was that through her familyin Friesland especially her father, a great horseman, Hilda had for many yearsworked and trained in the equestrian field, training and showing the finest horsesfor the dressage and show jumping circuits in Holland and the US. What do you see as the most valuable aspect of Camelot'shelp?

To have a team like Camelot that supports you and believesin you is a wonderful feeling. It's the amount of time and carethat was given to me when I needed it most and a high levelof understanding that takes precedence over it all.

What were the consequences to you of that help?

I have become stronger, more stable and I've learnt to strate-gically align all my actions towards my goals in such a waythat I keep achieving them! I keep having to move the goalposts into an ever widening sphere... my dream was to takeon Hollywood and I'm doing it... movies, singing, commer-cials, print, charity work, red carpet events. And I LOVE whatI do!

What would you say to other artists looking for help withtheir success as artists?

Persistence is key! Have a great team of people around youand ask for help when you need it! Rome wasn't built in aday and you don't have to go at it alone!

How do you see your career progressing from here?

I have huge goals and I see myself achieving all of them andmaking bigger ones! The next step for me is to create andrecord my debut album which I am really excited about.

So what has been happening to you recently?

I booked the lead in the remake of Dracula and filmed thathere in LA. It will be released this year. I have worked withsome amazing photographers, one of my personal favouriteswas Jill Greenberg and I've been in print and TV ads forclients such as Subaru as well as recording several voiceovers. I've sung at some of the mostprestigious hotels and events in LA,including just recently, the BeverlyWilshire in Beverly Hills. My work asAmbassador for The Foundation for aDrug Free World took me to Oklahomaat the end of last year where I per-formed a show, singing for the localsto help kids learn more about the risksof drugs and I've given seminars tochildren of all ages and written andrecorded songs about leading a drugfree life for the Foundation.

What is the most fun thing that hashappened to you as an artist?

There is nothing more fun than beingon stage singing and I'm excited now to be performing moreand more original material and playing to larger and largeraudiences.I must add that filming the commercial for Subaru was somuch fun too! We were speeding around Downtown LA at

4am with a Police Escort!

What’s the best thing about your move to Hollywood?

Apart from waking up each morning to blue sky and palmtrees the best thing is that I'm here doing it! I'm not thinkingwhat if...

Who is the most interesting artist thatyou have had the opportunity to inter-act with or meet?

I had Steve Perry (lead singer from theband Journey) to my house for a dinnerparty with some friends of mine and Iloved hearing all his stories! I alwaysadmired his voice and anyone that sings'Don't Stop Believing' has to be prettyspecial. A man after my own heart!

ENGLISH ROSE ARRIVES IN HOLLYWOOD. HOW THE‘ICONS OF THE FUTURE’ ALUMNI IS CLIMBING THELADDER TO THE STARS...

Catching up with busy triple talent Singer ActressDancer Victoria Summer, we chat to her about herlatest endeavours in tinsel town. After wrapping thelead role of Lina Harker in the remake of Dracula lastyear, Victoria has been busy with everything fromfilming the latest Subaru commercial to auditioningfor the lead in the latest TV pilot. In addition to that,she has been writing songs for her forthcomingalbum and as Ambassador for the Foundation for aDrug Free World, recently wrote and recorded ananti-drug anthem as well as giving seminars for kidsaddressing the dangers of drugs.

Life growing up in Berkshire, England was verydifferent. Victoria now attends Red Carpet Eventsmost weeks and just lately has had audition afteraudition and endless photo shoots with some verytalented Los Angeles based photographers includingJill Greenberg as most memorable.

Soon to go into the studio to start recording herdebut album, Victoria describes her singing style asVintage Pop. Her live performance venues haveincluded the Lanesborough Hotel in London,Crustacean Restaurant in Beverly Hills, the Casa DelMar Hotel in Santa Monica and the oh so glamorousBeverly Wilshire Hotel to name but a few.

We had a chat with Victoria to find out more.

How has your life changed since connecting upwith the Camelot Icons of the future program?

My life has completely changed. Often it is difficultfor an artist to have the support to concentrate ontheir craft; they are often distracted by having to doother jobs that may not necessarily contribute to theirgoals and purposes. Because of the help I havereceived from Camelot and the Icons of the Future pro-gramme, I have not only been able to take the time tobetter myself as an artist but I've also had the confi-dence and guidance to dream bigger than ever before.

In these times of rising anti-Americanismin Europe and in other parts of the world it isvery important that we do not forget exactly whyit is that the good works of many have blessedAmerica.

I was personally fortunate enough to live inthe United States for six years and during thattime I had the good fortune and honour to meetmany people from all over the United States.Some of those friendships have become some ofthe most cherished and valued in our life.

I could not have hoped, on the whole tohave met a kinder and more generous group ofsouls during the time we spent there, and it isfair to say that living in America, meeting andgetting to know Americans and learning theirvalues and ideas gave me back my hope inhumanity. And, directly as a result of thathope we now have been able, at CAMELOTCASTLE, to forward that hope to thousands ofother people.

We should remember that America wasfounded by those determined to escape andoppose religious persecution in Europe and theFounding Fathers set in stone a declaration ofIndependence, a Constitution and a Bill of Rightsthat between them represent some of the mostvaluable documents ever written on behalf ofmankind to help mankind and to securemankind’s freedom.

It delights us that the hope and wonderfullypositive feeling that people find here today atCamelot Castle was in part catalysed by theAmerican values, hope and basic goodness that Iran into with Americans of all types when I livedthere.

The romantic in me would like to think thatthis was the same hope that was carried toAmerica on the Mayflower from these Britishshores in the first place. And, igniting life andlives in the Americas, was the same hope thatcarried on in the hearts and minds of the menand women who forged a great nation nowknown as the United States of America.

Whatever the truth is or from wherever thathope “sprung” it was unmistakable when Iencountered it in the United States in 1991.

In America the idea that “ANYTHING ISPOSSIBLE” is known and understood and sits atthe core of the entire country’s existence.

And, it is because of that innate understanding offreedom, that anything is indeed possible.

For those people who have existed in societiesor areas where this idea has been suppressed orknocked out, it is sometimes hard to really under-stand the USA and the people’s optimism but whenone experiences this understanding for oneself it isquite priceless and unmistakable.

A man’s dreams are sacred and when aman is allowed or given a free space in which todream very often those dreams will come intoreality. In America one is invited to dream,indeed one is invited to dream big!

It is traditional in acknowledging Americato roll out the stars and the well-known figures ofthe day but today I want to invite you to thinkabout and bless the real treasure of America.

ITS ORDINARY PEOPLE.

For the real value of the United States liesin its ordinary families the men women and chil-

dren that form the vast majority of its people.

They are often not the flag wavers, or theegg throwers, but they live their lives in the sin-cere service of others and while they are oftensilent, they are indeed, the true standard of theAmerican nation.

In short they are quite wonderful people.

About forty years ago I went on a long hike,through hills absolutely unknown totourists, in that very old region where theAlps penetrate into Provence.

This region is bounded to the south-eastand south by the middle course of theDurance, between Sisteron and Mirabeau; tothe north by the upper course of the Drôme,from its source down to Die; to the west bythe plains of Comtat Venaissin and the out-skirts of Mont Ventoux. It includes all thenorthern part of the Département of Basses-Alpes, the south of Drôme and a littleenclave of Vaucluse.

At the time I undertook my long walkthrough this deserted region, it consisted of

barren and monotonous lands, at about 1200to 1300 meters above sea level. Nothinggrew there except wild lavender.

I was crossing this country at its widestpart, and after walking for three days, Ifound myself in the most complete desola-tion. I was camped next to the skeleton of anabandoned village. I had used the last of mywater the day before and I needed to findmore. Even though they were in ruins, thesehouses all huddled together and looking likean old wasps' nest made me think that theremust at one time have been a spring or awell there. There was indeed a spring, but itwas dry. The five or six roofless houses, rav-aged by sun and wind, and the small chapelwith its tumble-down belfry, were arrayedlike the houses and chapels of living vil-lages, but all life had disappeared.

It was a beautiful June day with plentyof sun, but on these shelterless lands, highup in the sky, the wind whistled with anunendurable brutality. Its growling in thecarcasses of the houses was like that of awild beast disturbed during its meal.

I had to move my camp. After five hoursof walking, I still hadn't found water, andnothing gave me hope of finding any.Everywhere there was the same dryness, thesame stiff, woody plants. I thought I saw in

the distance a small black silhouette. On achance I headed towards it. It was a shep-herd. Thirty lambs or so were resting nearhim on the scorching ground.

He gave me a drink from his gourd and alittle later he led me to his shepherd's cot-tage, tucked down in an undulation of theplateau. He drew his water - excellent - froma natural hole, very deep, above which hehad installed a rudimentary windlass.

This man spoke little. This is commonamong those who live alone, but he seemedsure of himself, and confident in this assur-ance, which seemed remarkable in this landshorn of everything. He lived not in a cabinbut in a real house of stone, from the looksof which it was clear that his own labor hadrestored the ruins he had found on hisarrival. His roof was solid and water-tight.The wind struck against the roof tiles withthe sound of the sea crashing on the beach.

His household was in order, his disheswashed, his floor swept, his rifle greased; hissoup boiled over the fire; I noticed then thathe was also freshly shaven, that all his but-tons were solidly sewn, and that his clotheswere mended with such care as to make thepatches invisible.

He shared his soup with me, and whenafterwards I offered him my tobacco pouch,

he told me that he didn't smoke. His dog, assilent as he, was friendly without beingfawning.

It had been agreed immediately that Iwould pass the night there, the closest vil-lage being still more than a day and a halffarther on. Furthermore, I understood per-fectly well the character of the rare villagesof that region. There are four or five of themdispersed far from one another on the flanksof the hills, in groves of white oaks at thevery ends of roads passable by carriage.They are inhabited by woodcutters whomake charcoal. They are places where theliving is poor. The families, pressed togetherin close quarters by a climate that is exceed-ingly harsh, in summer as well as in winter,struggle ever more selfishly against eachother. Irrational contention grows beyond allbounds, fueled by a continuous struggle toescape from that place. The men carry theircharcoal to the cities in their trucks, andthen return. The most solid qualities crackunder this perpetual Scottish shower. Thewomen stir up bitterness. There is competi-tion over everything, from the sale of char-coal to the benches at church. The virtuesfight amongst themselves, the vices fightamongst themselves, and there is a ceaselessgeneral combat between the vices and thevirtues. On top of all that, the equally cease-less wind irritates the nerves. There are epi-

demics of suicides and numerous cases ofinsanity, almost always murderous.

The shepherd, who did not smoke, tookout a bag and poured a pile of acorns outonto the table. He began to examine themone after another with a great deal of atten-tion, separating the good ones from the bad.I smoked my pipe. I offered to help him, buthe told me it was his own business. Indeed,seeing the care that he devoted to this job, Idid not insist. This was our whole conversa-tion. When he had in the good pile a fairnumber of acorns, he counted them out intopackets of ten. In doing this he eliminatedsome more of the acorns, discarding thesmaller ones and those that that showedeven the slightest crack, for he examinedthem very closely. When he had before himone hundred perfect acorns he stopped, andwe went to bed.

The company of this man broughtme a feeling of peace. I asked him thenext morning if I might stay and rest thewhole day with him. He found that per-fectly natural. Or more exactly, he gaveme the impression that nothing coulddisturb him. This rest was not absolute-ly necessary to me, but I was intriguedand I wanted to find out more about thisman. He let out his flock and took themto the pasture. Before leaving, hesoaked in a bucket of water the littlesack containing the acorns that he hadso carefully chosen and counted.

I noted that he carried as a sort ofwalking stick an iron rod as thick as histhumb and about one and a half meterslong. I set off like someone out for astroll, following a route parallel to his.His sheep pasture lay at the bottom of asmall valley. He left his flock in thecharge of his dog and climbed uptowards the spot where I was standing.I was afraid that he was coming toreproach me for my indiscretion, butnot at all : It was his own route and heinvited me to come along with him if Ihad nothing better to do. He continuedon another two hundred meters up thehill.

Having arrived at the place he hadbeen heading for, he begin to pound his ironrod into the ground. This made a hole inwhich he placed an acorn, whereupon hecovered over the hole again. He was plantingoak trees. I asked him if the land belonged tohim. He answered no. Did he know whoseland it was? He did not know. He supposedthat it was communal land, or perhaps itbelonged to someone who did not care aboutit. He himself did not care to know who theowners were. In this way he planted his onehundred acorns with great care.

After the noon meal, he began once moreto pick over his acorns. I must have putenough insistence into my questions,because he answered them. For three yearsnow he had been planting trees in this soli-tary way. He had planted one hundred thou-sand. Of these one hundred thousand, twen-ty thousand had come up. He counted onlosing another half of them to rodents and toeverything else that is unpredictable in thedesigns of Providence. That left ten thousandoaks that would grow in this place where

before there was nothing.

It was at this moment that I began towonder about his age. He was clearly morethan fifty. Fifty-five, he told me. His namewas Elzéard Bouffier. He had owned a farmin the plains, where he lived most of his life.He had lost his only son, and then his wife.He had retired into this solitude, where hetook pleasure in living slowly, with his flockof sheep and his dog. He had concluded thatthis country was dying for lack of trees. Headded that, having nothing more importantto do, he had resolved to remedy the situa-tion.

Leading as I did at the time a solitary life,despite my youth, I knew how to treat thesouls of solitary people with delicacy. Still, Imade a mistake. It was precisely my youththat forced me to imagine the future in myown terms, including a certain search for

happiness. I told him that in thirty yearsthese ten thousand trees would be magnifi-cent. He replied very simply that, if God gavehim life, in thirty years he would have plant-ed so many other trees that these ten thou-sand would be like a drop of water in theocean.

He had also begun to study the propaga-tion of beeches. and he had near his house anursery filled with seedlings grown frombeechnuts. His little wards, which he hadprotected from his sheep by a screen fence,were growing beautifully. He was also con-sidering birches for the valley bottomswhere, he told me, moisture lay slumberingjust a few meters beneath the surface of thesoil.

We parted the next day.

The next year the war of 14 came, inwhich I was engaged for five years. Aninfantryman could hardly think about trees.To tell the truth, the whole business hadn't

made a very deep impression on me; I tookit to be a hobby, like a stamp collection, andforgot about it.

With the war behind me, I found myselfwith a small demobilization bonus and agreat desire to breathe a little pure air.Without any preconceived notion beyondthat, I struck out again along the trailthrough that deserted country.

The land had not changed. Nonetheless,beyond that dead village I perceived in thedistance a sort of gray fog that covered thehills like a carpet. Ever since the day beforeI had been thinking about the shepherd whoplanted trees. « Ten thousand oaks, I hadsaid to myself, must really take up a lot ofspace.»

I had seen too many people die dur-ing those five years not to be able to

imagine easily the death of ElzéardBouffier, especially since when a man istwenty he thinks of a man of fifty as anold codger for whom nothing remainsbut to die. He was not dead. In fact, hewas very spry. He had changed his job.He only had four sheep now, but tomake up for this he had about a hun-dred beehives. He had gotten rid of thesheep because they threatened his cropof trees. He told me (as indeed I couldsee for myself) that the war had not dis-turbed him at all. He had continuedimperturbably with his planting.

The oaks of 1910 were now ten years oldand were taller than me and than him. Thespectacle was impressive. I was literallyspeechless and, as he didn't speak himself,we passed the whole day in silence, walkingthrough his forest. It was in three sections,eleven kilometers long overall and, at itswidest point, three kilometers wide. When Iconsidered that this had all sprung from thehands and from the soul of this one man -

without technical aids - , it struck me thatmen could be as effective as God in domainsother than destruction.

He had followed his idea, and the beech-es that reached up to my shoulders andextending as far as the eye could see borewitness to it. The oaks were now good andthick, and had passed the age where theywere at the mercy of rodents; as for thedesigns of Providence, to destroy the workthat had been created would henceforthrequire a cyclone. He showed me admirablestands of birches that dated from five yearsago, that is to say from 1915, when I hadbeen fighting at Verdun. He had plantedthem in the valley bottoms where he hadsuspected, correctly, that there was waterclose to the surface. They were as tender asyoung girls, and very determined.

This creation had the air, moreover, ofworking by a chain reaction. He hadnot troubled about it; he went on obsti-nately with his simple task. But, ingoing back down to the village, I sawwater running in streams that, withinliving memory, had always been dry. Itwas the most striking revival that hehad shown me. These streams hadborne water before, in ancient days.Certain of the sad villages that I spokeof at the beginning of my account hadbeen built on the sites of ancient Gallo-Roman villages, of which there stillremained traces; archeologists diggingthere had found fishhooks in placeswhere in more recent times cisternswere required in order to have a littlewater.

The wind had also been at work,dispersing certain seeds. As the waterreappeared, so too did willows, osiers,meadows, gardens, flowers, and a cer-tain reason to live.

But the transformation had takenplace so slowly that it had been takenfor granted, without provoking sur-prise. The hunters who climbed thehills in search of hares or wild boarshad noticed the spreading of the littletrees, but they set it down to the natu-ral spitefulness of the earth. That is

why no one had touched the work of thisman. If they had suspected him, they wouldhave tried to thwart him. But he never cameunder suspicion : Who among the villagersor the administrators would ever have sus-pected that anyone could show such obsti-nacy in carrying out this magnificent act ofgenerosity?

Beginning in 1920 I never let more thana year go by without paying a visit toElzéard Bouffier. I never saw him waver ordoubt, though God alone can tell whenGod's own hand is in a thing! I have saidnothing of his disappointments, but you caneasily imagine that, for such an accomplish-ment, it was necessary to conquer adversity;that, to assure the victory of such a passion,it was necessary to fight against despair. Oneyear he had planted ten thousand maples.They all died. The next year,he gave up onmaples and went back to beeches, which dideven better than the oaks.

acter, one must not forgetthat he worked in totalsolitude; so total that,toward the end of his life,he lost the habit of talk-ing. Or maybe he just did-n't see the need for it.

In 1933 he received thevisit of an astonished forestranger. This functionaryordered him to cease build-ing fires outdoors, for fearof endangering this naturalforest. It was the first time,this naive man told him,that a forest had beenobserved to grow up entire-ly on its own. At the time ofthis incident, he was think-ing of planting beeches at aspot twelve kilometersfrom his house. To avoidthe coming and going -because at the time he wasseventy-five years old - heplanned to build a cabin ofstone out where he wasdoing his planting. This hedid the next year.

In 1935, a veritableadministrative delegationwent to examine this «natural forest ». Therewas an important person-age from Waters andForests, a deputy, andsome technicians. Manyuseless words were spo-ken. It was decided to dosomething, but luckilynothing was done, exceptfor one truly useful thing: placing the forest underthe protection of the State and forbiddinganyone from coming there to make charcoal.For it was impossible not to be taken withthe beauty of these young trees in fullhealth. And the forest exercised its seductivepowers even on the deputy himself.

I had a friend among the chief foresterswho were with the delegation. I explainedthe mystery to him. One day the next week,we went off together to look for ElzéardBouffier, We found him hard at work, twen-ty kilometers away from the place where theinspection had taken place.

This chief forester was not my friend fornothing. He understood the value of things.He knew how to remain silent. I offered upsome eggs I had brought with me as a gift.We split our snack three ways, and thenpassed several hours in mute contemplationof the landscape.

The hillside whence we had come wascovered with trees six or seven meters high.I remembered the look of the place in 1913 :a desert... The peaceful and steady labor, thevibrant highland air, his frugality, and aboveall, the serenity of his soul had given the oldman a kind of solemn good health. He wasan athlete of God. I asked myself how manyhectares he had yet to cover with trees.

Before leaving, my friend made a simplesuggestion concerning certain species oftrees to which the terrain seemed to be par-ticularly well suited. He was not insistent. «For the very good reason, » he told me after-wards, « that this fellow knows a lot moreabout this sort of thing than I do. » Afteranother hour of walking, this thought hav-ing travelled along with him, he added : « Heknows a lot more about this sort of thingthan anybody - and he has found a jolly

good way of being happy! »

It was thanks to the efforts of this chiefforester that the forest was protected, andwith it, the happiness of this man. He desig-nated three forest rangers for their protec-tion, and terrorized them to such an extentthat they remained indifferent to any jugs ofwine that the woodcutters might offer asbribes.

The forest did not run any grave risksexcept during the war of 1939. Then auto-mobiles were being run on wood alcohol,and there was never enough wood. Theybegan to cut some of the stands of the oaksof 1910, but the trees stood so far from anyuseful road that the enterprise turned out tobe bad from a financial point of view, andwas soon abandoned. The shepherd neverknew anything about it. He was thirty kilo-meters away, peacefully continuing his task,as untroubled by the war of 39 as he hadbeen of the war of 14.

I saw Elzéard Bouffier for the last time inJune of 1945. He was then eighty-sevenyears old. I had once more set off along mytrail through the wilderness, only to findthat now, in spite of the shambles in whichthe war had left the whole country, therewas a motor coach running between the val-ley of the Durance and the mountain. I setdown to this relatively rapid means of trans-portation the fact that I no longer recognizedthe landmarks I knew from my earlier visits.It also seemed that the route was taking methrough entirely new places. I had to ask thename of a village to be sure that I was indeedpassing through that same region, once soruined and desolate. The coach set me downat Vergons. In 1913, this hamlet of ten ortwelve houses had had three inhabitants.They were savages, hating each other, and

earning their living by trapping : Physicallyand morally, they resembled prehistoricmen. The nettles devoured the abandonedhouses that surrounded them. Their liveswere without hope, it was only a matter ofwaiting for death to come: a situation thathardly predisposes one to virtue.

All that had changed, even to the airitself. In place of the dry, brutal gusts thathad greeted me long ago, a gentle breezewhispered to me, bearing sweet odors. Asound like that of running water came fromthe heights above : It was the sound of thewind in the trees. And most astonishing ofall, I heard the sound of real water runninginto a pool. I saw that they had built a foun-tain, that it was full of water, and whattouched me most, that next to it they hadplanted a lime-tree that must be at least fouryears old, already grown thick, an incon-testable symbol of resurrection.

Furthermore, Vergons showed the signsof labors for which hope is a requirement :Hope must therefore have returned. Theyhad cleared out the ruins, knocked down thebroken walls, and rebuilt five houses. Thehamlet now counted twenty-eight inhabi-tants, including four young families. Thenew houses, freshly plastered, were sur-rounded by gardens that bore, mixed in witheach other but still carefully laid out, veg-etables and flowers, cabbages and rosebush-es, leeks and gueules-de-loup, celery andanemones. It was now a place where anyonewould be glad to live.

From there I continued on foot. The warfrom which we had just barely emerged hadnot permitted life to vanish completely, andnow Lazarus was out of his tomb. On thelower flanks of the mountain, I saw smallfields of barley and rye; in the bottoms of the

narrow valleys, meadowlands were justturning green.

It has taken only the eight years that nowseparate us from that time for the wholecountry around there to blossom with splen-dor and ease. On the site of the ruins I hadseen in 1913 there are now well-kept farms,the sign of a happy and comfortable life. Theold springs, fed by rain and snow now thatare now retained by the forests, have onceagain begun to flow. The brooks have beenchannelled. Beside each farm, amid grovesof maples, the pools of fountains are bor-dered by carpets of fresh mint. Little by little,the villages have been rebuilt. Yuppies havecome from the plains, where land is expen-sive, bringing with them youth, movement,and a spirit of adventure. Walking along theroads you will meet men and women in fullhealth, and boys and girls who know how tolaugh, and who have regained the taste forthe traditional rustic festivals. Counting boththe previous inhabitants of the area, nowunrecognizable from living in plenty, andthe new arrivals, more than ten thousandpersons owe their happiness to ElzéardBouffier.

When I consider that a single man, rely-ing only on his own simple physical andmoral resources, was able to transform adesert into this land of Canaan, I am con-vinced that despite everything, the humancondition is truly admirable. But when I takeinto account the constancy, the greatness ofsoul, and the selfless dedication that wasneeded to bring about this transformation, Iam filled with an immense respect for thisold, uncultured peasant who knew how tobring about a work worthy of God.

The Camelot Castle Hotel at Tintagelhas been transformed and the momentyou enter this magnificent buildingyou can feel Camelot's influence. TheHotel itself is a stunning building inits own right, but the transformationwithin lies at the heart of this uniquelocation. John and Irina Mappintogether with Ted Stourton, havepulled out all the stops to provideguests with an experience that youwill definitely remember.

When we chose to dine at Irina'sRestaurant, it was a still and balmy,early June evening. The sky wasablaze with a fiery sun that was slow-ly setting over the Ocean, a plus, asthe dining room itself is a magnificentspace with stunning views of KingArthur's Castle and the NorthCornwall coast from every window.

On entering the dining room, mycompanion and I were greeted and

seated by attentive and courteous staffwho were always on hand but notobtrusive. The high ceilings, chande-liers, comfortable chairs and aEuropean flavour to the decor, makethe space elegant but homely.

The food was very well presentedand very good value for money, infact the prices, which start from£21.95, do not reflect the sumptuous-ness of the food or the surroundings.I can highly recommend theSwordfish, cooked to perfection andvery filling. The head chef hails frominternational hotels of Dubai. He andhis 5 star team of chefs bring aMediterranean feel and flavour tofamiliar food that is both fresh andexciting.

My prediction is that Irina'sRestaurant at Camelot Castle maysoon be the number 1 destination forfood lovers.
