Welcome to Cambridge! Its antastic to haveyou with us and we hope your visit will be

inormative and enjoyable. The purpose o the

Open Days is to provide the opportunity or

you to nd out more about the University, our

courses and the Colleges, and to talk with staf

and students.

With so much going on during the Open Days, we

suggest you look at the programme o activities in

advance or early in the day and make a plan so you

can make the most o your visit to help you withthis weve let spaces by the session times so you

can mark which you want to go to or in what order.

Thank you or taking the time to visit us and

we hope you have a great day. I you have any

questions, please do not hesitate to ask a member

o sta or a student (wholl be wearing turquoise

Cambridge Open Days t-shirts).

Please be aware that commercial organisations may have

students/sta in Cambridge collecting contact details o

potential applicants and/or advertising their services. I you

are approached by a representative and nd their behaviour

intrusive, please inorm sta at one o the Welcome Desks. These

organisations are not linked to either the University o Cambridge

or Oxord, and we do not support or encourage any o these

commercial enterprises none has access to any inormation

A ew things to note

Welcome DesksThe Main Welcome Desk at the Old Schools in

the city centre (map location W ) will be open

between 9.30am and 4.00pm each day. Sta will

be on hand to answer queries and youll be able to

pick up copies o various publications relating to

the Open Days, undergraduate study at Cambridge,

the Universitys Music Awards, student nance, and

walking tour guides. You can also have a look at

the exhibition o student photography on display

here, oering a student perspective o lie at theUniversity.

In addition, inormation stands and representatives

rom a range o other services will be based here:

There will be two smaller Welcome Desks one

on the Sidgwick Site (map location B1 ) and one

on the Downing Site (map location E1 ), open

between 10.00am and 4.00pm where you can

pick up additional copies o this programme and

a small number o other publications, as well as

speak to sta.

Disability Resource Centre (DRC)Map location J1

Open: 9.00am 4.00pm

The DRC provides inormation and support to

prospective and current students with a disability/

specic learning difculty/medical condition.

A session about the DRC, the Disabled Students

Allowances, and support or students with specic

learning difculties will be oered at 2.30pm each

day and will last approximately one hour.

Language Centre

Map location E11

Open: 10.00am 4.00pm

Tours o the Language Centre will be available

throughout the day. A ull tour will last

approximately 20 minutes but visitors can

join/leave a tour as time permits.

University Library

Map location H


As well as an inormation stand, tours o the

University Library and its unique collections will

be available throughout the day. Each tour will

last approximately 15 minutes, with the last tour

commencing at 4.00pm. Tour participants must

be aged 16 or over.

ADC Theatre

Map location R

Open: 12.00pm 5.00pmStudents will be on hand to answer questions.

Tours o the Theatre will be available at 12.00pm,

1.00pm, 2.00pm, 3.00pm and 4.00pm. Each tour

will last approximately 40 minutes.

Prayer room

A prayer room will be available or visitors on the

Sidgwick Site. Please speak to sta at the Sidgwick

Site Welcome Desk (map location B1 ) about access.

Rereshments

Rereshments can be purchased on someUniversity sites.

You can also nd plenty o ood stalls, sandwich and

coee shops, restaurants, and pubs/bars serving

ood throughout the city. Trinity Street/Kings Parade

and the streets around the Market Square (Market Hill)are a good place to start. Please note that the

University o Cambridge accepts no liability or the

Whats a College?Cambridge is a collegiate university. This means

that it comprises various aculties and departments

in dierent academic subjects, and a number o

Colleges.

Your College is your base or the time youre at

Cambridge. Its where you live, eat, do a lot o

socialising, receive academic and pastoral support,

and where you oten (though not always) have

your supervisions. Students on the same course,

regardless o their College, are taught together by

the academic aculties/departments, attending the

same lectures, seminars and practicals. There are

no Colleges that are better or certain subjects.

Advice on how (and how not) to choose a College,

along with an explanation o the key unctions that

the University (through the aculties/departments)

Most o the locations used or the Open Days are

within walking distance o the city centre, but

some Colleges and departments are a little urther

out. I you have sufcient time you may like to walk

out to these Colleges/departments. Alternatively,

you may wish to use one o the bus services (seebelow).

Walking tours

Four walking tours will be available two around

the city centre and two to/rom West Cambridge.

The tours vary in length (between 30 minutes and

two hours) and you can pick these up rom the

Main Welcome Desk (map location W ).

I it s a nice day we particularly recommend

the walk to West Cambridge (approximately 30minutes each way), which takes you past the

University Library and Faculty o Mathematics, as

well as a number o the Colleges.

Buses

Cambridge Open Day shuttle bus

We will be providing a ree shuttle bus service

between Queens Road (The Backs) and the West

Cambridge Site (JJ Thomson Avenue). There will

also be a stop near Storeys Way, or those who

wish to visit the Faculty o Mathematics, and/or theColleges in this area (Churchill, Fitzwilliam, Lucy

Cavendish, St Edmunds and Murray Edwards).

The buses will run between 11.00am and 5:30pm.

There will be limited seating on each bus but

we anticipate a pick-up/set down rom each

o the three stops every 10-20 minutes (trafc

depending).

The last pick-up rom Queens Road (to West

Cambridge) will be at 5.00pm, and the last pick-up

rom the West Cambridge Site (to Queens Road)

will be at 5.30pm. Please note that the West

Cambridge Site is approximately ve minutes walk

rom the Madingley Road Park & Ride site.

City services

The Uni 4 and Citi 6 bus services (operated by

Stagecoach) link the Colleges/departments

with the city centre. Inormation and timetables

will be available rom the Main Welcome Desk

(map location W ) on the day.

The train station is approximately 20 minutes walk

rom the city centre, or buses depart every 10-20

minutes rom Emmanuel Street.

I you use one o the Park & Ride services, you can

catch a bus back rom the ollowing city centre bus

stops to:

The University is not a campus university the aculties/departments and Colleges are scatteredthroughout the city but Cambridge isnt a large city and is easy to get around. A map o the city

centre can be ound on p12-13 and a more detailed map o the University and Colleges will be

available rom the Welcome Desks (map locations W B1 E1 ).

Getting around Cambridge

Cambridge is a busy city, not built with moderntrac fows in mind, and so its best to travel into the

city by public transport.

By car

For those driving to Cambridge, the roads in and

around the city centre can get congested and

parking is very limited. Thereore, we recommend

visitors arriving by car use the Park & Ride services

into the city centre.

The Park & Ride sites are shown on the map (right).Parking is ree and a return ticket to the city costs

2.60 rom the ticket machine and 2.90 rom the

bus driver (please bring the correct change). Buses

leave every 10 minutes and the journey normally

takes around 15 minutes, but it s advised to allow

at least 30 minutes to travel into the city centre.

Alternatively, visitors rom the north may want to

use the Guided Busway into the city centre

(www.thebusway.ino/). Follow the signs rom

the A14 or Longstanton Park & Ride.

Disabled parking is available on some University

sites or the Open Days. Please contact the

Cambridge Open Days Team in advance about

arrangements (email: cambridgeopendays@admin.

cam.ac.uk; telephone: 01223 765514). Disabled

parking is also available in the citys car parks and

on some streets. Please check in advance with

the Tourist Inormation Centre

(www.visitcambridge.org).

By train

Cambridge train station is approximately 20 minutes

walk rom the city centre. There are a taxi rank and

bus stops in ront o the main entrance and buses

run every 10-20 minutes to St Andrews Street in

the city centre (returning to the station rom

Emmanuel Street).

By bus
