Play a single game of hangman with them using the example word (postcard). Elicit a sentence to describe a postcard and then what students have to do with Part 6. In pairs and with books open, ask students to identify the key words in each of Q36 to Q40 (i.e. list of food, look…what a word means, person may write for a newspaper, reading…place, put on… to read). Ask them to do Q36 to Q40 as individuals. This lesson plan accompanies Cambridge English: Key 6 Writing Test 4 Parts 6, 7, 8 and 9, Questions 36-56.

This lesson is suitable for students coming towards the end of their Cambridge English: Key course.

• Pair your students and ask them to scan the text, underline the

word immediately preceding the gaps for each question and discuss possible answers (i.e. from/to, no/not, few/little, by/on, etc.).

• Give each of your students an answer sheet for Q41 to Q50 and ask them to write in their answers individually. Elicit their answers.

Part 8 • Briefly elicit what students have to do in this part and what they

understand by the word ‘notes’ (i.e. a few words, memo, etc.). • Pair your students and hand out Resource 1. Ask Student A to

answer the questions using the notice and Student B to answer the questions using the email.

• In the same pairs, ask students to complete Brian’s notes using the information gained from their combined reading of the notice and email.

Part 9 • Elicit what students have to do in Part 9 (write 25-35 words and

answer the questions). Elicit the style the text would be written in (informal email).

• Write up the word ‘club’ on the board and brainstorm the types of clubs available at school, university or in your students’ local area (i.e. chess, computer games, football, debating, table tennis, etc.).

• Write up the following questions: o What club? o Where? o What day(s)? o What do you do there?

Pair students to ask and answer the questions based on a real club they attend/would like to attend.

• Students can then complete Part 9 individually, in their own words

the examiner’s comments. • Pair students. Hand out the sample answers and the examiner

comments. Ask them to match the comments to the sample answers.

• Ask students to give a grade to their own writing from the previous exercise and then pair them to explain the grade they gave themselves with a partner.

• Write up the word ‘hobby’ on the board and brainstorm the types of hobbies your students take part in.

• Write up three question words (i.e. What? Where? How long?). Pair your students to ask and answer questions on their hobby using these question prompts.
