The Cambridge Corn Exchange is a facility provided by Cambridge City Council

to our Classical Concert Season, which promises to be an outstanding series with some of the world’s most distinguished orchestras.

Some of the highlights include one of the country’s most revered musicians, Julian Lloyd Webber, performing Elgar’s Cello Concerto in April 2012 and the return of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performing two concerts including the famous symphonies, Beethoven’s Fifth and Dvořák’s Ninth.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Cambridge University Press, NW Brown, Birketts LLP, Ian Maclay, Managing Director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Andrew Jamieson of IMG Artists, Orchestras Live and Cambridgeshire Music for therir support with this series.

We are delighted to open our season with the first visit from our resident British orchestra, the distinguished Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, who will perform a mixed programme of popular classics opening with Tchaikovsky’s passionate Romeo & Juliet Suite.

The talented young pianist Alexandra Dariescu will then perform Grieg’s much-loved piano concerto. In the second half Gavin Sutherland will conduct the orchestra in a stirring performance of Beethoven’s elemental Symphony No.5.

The RPO return for our 25th Anniversary Concert in a first half that celebrates two of this country’s greatest composers.

The concert will start with Vaughan Williams’ elegiac Fantasia On A Theme By Thomas Tallis, recently voted the nation‘s third mostfavourite piece in the Classic FM Hall of Fame. It will be followed by Elgar’s great masterpiece, his wonderful cello concerto performed by Thomas Carroll.

In the second half Benjamin Pope will conduct Dvořák’s greatest symphony, his Symphony No.9, known as ‘the New World’made famous by Hovis Bread.

Khachaturian Suite From Masquerade Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2 Rimsky Korsakov Scheherazade

The Russian State Philharmonic make a welcome return to the Corn Exchange, under their eminent music director, Valery Poliansky and his extremely talented daughter, the pianist Tatyana Polianskaya.

The programme will start with Khachaturian’s delightful Masquerade Suite, with its famous lilting waltz theme. This will be followed by perhaps the most loved piano concerto, Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.2. In the second half the orchestra will play Rimsky Korsakov’s exotic Scheherazade.

English Chamber Orchestra

One of this country’s most well-known chamber orchestras, the English Chamber Orchestra will perform a mixed programme which opens with Bach’s exuberant Brandenburg Concerto No.3 followed by two salon pieces by Elgar and Bach’s beautiful concerto for two violins.

In the second half, Stephanie Gonley will lead the orchestra in one of the most popular works of the last 300 years, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, which, although very familiar, is always a thrilling experience when heard live.

The European Union Chamber Orchestra will be joined by revered musician, Julian Lloyd Webber, to perform Haydn’s virtuosic Cello Concerto No.1.

The concert will open with Handel’s Baroque masterpiece, his famous Water Music, which will be followed in the second half by Delius’s lyrical Aquarelles and one of Mozart’s most sublime symphonies, his Symphony No.29.

We are very pleased to end our season on a high note with a visit from one of Europe’s most distinguished orchestras, the Berlin Symphony Orchestra.

Resident orchestra in Berlin’s famous Konzerthaus and a specialist in the Classical repertoire, their programme includes Beethoven’s dramatic Egmont Overture and perhaps Mozart’s most popular piano concerto, also known as the Elvira Madigan. In the second half the orchestra will perform Beethoven’s mighty Symphony No.3, a fitting end to a splendid season.
