Designed by the legendary Harry S. Colt, the natural contours of the picturesque tree-lined lay-out have been used to create a magnificent golfing experience that has been enjoyed by our Members for 100 years… that’s right, this is a very special year, as we celebrate our Centenary in 2013.
The excellence of the course is coupled with the magnificent Clubhouse and friendly Members, who often also meet socially to enjoy the outstanding facilities which the club has to offer.

We host a number of different functions and parties at our venue, ranging from small family lunches, birthday parties and Christenings to barbecues and large corporate balls.

The Course
The course has benefited from a sustained programme of conservation and management, while the original features have been preserved and enhanced using modern greenkeeping methods and machinery.
A forestry and heathland conservation programme is in place, and the club’s policy is to ensure the long term future of its outstanding asset.
The sandy heathland on which the course is built has excellent drainage properties resulting in fine year-round conditions for golf.
Our own natural resource, a bore hole, provides a comprehensive irrigation system serving trees, fairways and greens.
The course plays a maximum 6,426 yards off the blue tees, 6,215 yards off the white tees and 5,972 yards from the yellow tees to a par of 71. The Ladies are given an extra shot at the fifth hole, a difficult and longer par four that, for the men, is stroke index one on the card.
Depending on which tee position is in use on the last hole, the distance from the red tees is either 5,524 or 5,502 yards.
There are no weak holes, but one of the most memorable is the last, which requires an accurate drive over a raised expanse of heather to a hidden landing area.
The second is to an elevated green in front of the Clubhouse, where distance judgement is paramount so as not to upset Members enjoying a post-round drink!
The new Clubhouse, which was built in 1990, provides modern locker rooms with shower and changing facilities.

Our History

Camberley Heath was the brainchild of J. F. Wright, a gentleman living at Frimley Hall in Camberley, Surrey. He considered that there was a need for an 18-hole course in Camberley and, along with a number of acquaintances, he acquired sufficient land for the project.
Laid out in 1913 in an area known as Cart Bottom, on the Frimley Ridges, Camberley Heath remains a challenge to all who play here.
Designed by Harry Shapland Colt, and completed by local nurseryman and golf enthusiast, Gomer Waterer, Camberley Heath is one of Surrey’s finest heathland courses.
Bernard Darwin, the celebrated golf correspondent wrote at the time, “Sandy and heathery, long and difficult, costing enormous sums of money and laid out with the most consummate ingenuity by the most famous architect.”
By today’s standards the course is not long, at 6,426 yards, but still requires accuracy and thoughtful shot making over heather-clad mounds and around the natural contours of the land.
Due to the heavy military influence in the area, many of the first members were military men, along with their wives and daughters. The links with both the Staff College and Royal Military College remained strong for many years, with many Club Captains and several Club Secretaries coming from the military.

During the past 100 years the course has changed in appearance with many pine trees growing and shaping the sides of the fairways.
In the late 1980s the club was bought by the Japanese company MID and further changes were made. A new clubhouse rose next to the old one, retaining the magnificent view; a lily pond was created in front of the 16th green; and buggy paths, along with a concrete tunnel, emerged. The influence of Colt remains in the natural lines and curves of the course.
Camberley Heath has a rich golfing heritage. On New Year’s Day, 1914, Prince Albert Christian of Schleswig-Holstein, a grandson of Queen Victoria, drove the first ball from the first tee to declare the golf course open.
The formal opening of the course on July 11, 1914, saw an exhibition match involving Harry Vardon, Ted Ray, J. H. Taylor and the Club’s Professional Phil Gaudin.
In the early years the Admirals and Generals competed annually, often with the Prince of Wales and the Duke of York, later to become King George VI, on opposite sides. In 1937, the Duke of York became Patron of the club.
During the early years, many of the greats played in tournaments and exhibition matches at Camberley, including James Braid, J. H. Taylor, Harry Vardon, Jack White and Tommy Armour.
In the 1930s the Inter-Club Mixed Foursomes brought many top amateur players to Camberley. The course has hosted the Regional Qualifier for the Open Championship, and The Seniors Open Championship, the Wills Ladies Tournament, the Newark Ladies Tournament and The Lagonda Open Scratch Tournament.

Our History continued
It was the amateurs who set the early course records, first a 78 by Major H. Gardiner Hill; then, during the first 10 years, this was reduced to 68 by one of the club’s first characters – Captain W. H. H. Aitken, known as “Jumbo”, in 1925.
On one occasion “Jumbo” was challenged to hit the 18th green from the back tees, and he hit six balls, four of which landed on the green.
In 1988, Russell Claydon set a new course record of 65 whilst playing the first round of the Lagonda. In 20012 the Ladies record was smashed by Ashleigh Greenham (West Essex), playing in the Clipper Open Scratch, with a gross 65.
Among Camberley’s members is one of England’s finest lady amateur golfers, Mary Percival Gourlay, known as Molly, a member for 65 years, one of the players in the first Curtis Cup team, winner of numerous Championships, Chairman of the LGU and President of ELGA… Camberley is proud to own many of her trophies and prizes.
Two other members, Richard Boxall and Maxine Burton, became well known English professionals during the 1980s.

Our club professional is Stephen Speller, who joined us a few years ago from Sunningdale Golf Club. Stephen is also the Srixon Resident Teaching Professional for Europe and was involved in both the setting up of the Srixon/Cleveland Centre of Excellence and the product development of their equipment.
Stephen and his team supply top brand names in golfing equipment, clothing and accessories for men and women and offer a well-stocked shop with friendly expert advice.
The shop offers all the regular golf club items such as club crested clothing and other equipment, lessons, club hire and club custom fitting.
There is also a great range of non-crested merchandise to choose from and you can always rely on friendly and expert advice.
Equipment is custom fitted by our PGA professional to ensure the right selection is tailor made specifically for you… and we also offer a “try before you buy” service.
The shop is open seven days a week, and opening times are 7.30am to 6.30pm during the season, and 8am to 5pm over the winter.

Steve Speller and Matt Collis have a wealth of experience from teaching beginners to elite players, and will work at a pace that matches your learning curve.
Half-hour and hour-long lessons are available. All areas of the game can be catered for, from putting to driving, applying different techniques around the green to getting your ball close to the pin consistently, and from bunker play to driving the ball with confidence.
On-course playing lessons are also available and these are a great way of helping a golfer at any level to develop and learn how to put all their new skills into practice.
There is no better insight into taking shots back from the course than by learning from the thought processes of those people that can beat par on a regular basis.

Camberley Heath has excellent practice facilities for golfers of all abilities looking to improve any aspect of their game.
There is a large practice area to the left of the first tee, for example, that is around 270 yards long, making it suitable for all but the very longest hitters to work on any club in their bag up to and including driver.
Members bring along their own balls and hit off the grass, which gives them a more accurate impression of how well they are actually striking the ball.
For those looking to work on accuracy with their mid- to short-irons, there are several flags dotted around the practice ground at various distances from the teeing area.
Then there is a chipping green at the very end of the range which is suitable for working on those all-important shots around the green, and several bunkers for perfecting those sand saves.
Get your short game in order, and your handicap will undoubtedly come down.
We firmly believe the putting surfaces at Camberley Heath are second to none, and there is a practice putting area at the side of the first tee to get you in the groove on the greens… in addition, there are two practice nets near the Clubhouse to get those rusty swings out of the system before taking to the course.

All our rooms are en-suite, supplied with individual bathroom toiletries and towels. There is ample parking and mature landscaped gardens surround the property. Melford House is a non-smoking establishment; however, smoking facilities are supplied within the grounds of the property. Melford House is superbly positioned within the prestigious Farnborough Park area. All major facilities are within walking distance, as are the three mainline railway stations.
Melford House Guesthouse is a substantial period property, with a rich and varied history. At Melford House we strive to provide the personal touch that only a small establishment can offer, but with some of the services normally expected of larger
hotels. The house itself is a grand old Edwardian building perfectly located in the heart of the prestigious Farnborough Park area. It is very convenient for the train stations, Farnborough airport, and the main business parks. It is also within a short walk of several quality pubs and restaurants. Evening entertainment can be found at the Swan Pub, one of Hampshire’s great music bars, and the Prince of Wales pub, routinely voted CAMRA’s best Real Ale pub in Hampshire and best in Wessex region in 2009.

The seven-day membership allows unlimited use of the course, the club and its facilities at any time during normal opening hours, while a five-day membership affords the same opportunities from Monday to Friday.
We realise how important it is to have younger golfers coming through at Camberley Heath, and Junior Memberships are available at very attractive discounts.
We offer two Memberships at special rates to ease the transition from Junior to Full Membership: these are an Intermediate Membership for those aged 19 to 30, and an Advanced Intermediate Membership for those aged 30 to 35.
Non-golfers can join as Social Members and enjoy full use of our Clubhouse seven days a week. This is the perfect option for those looking for a quiet retreat.
There is also an opportunity for local firms to use our course as Business Memberships are available to them.

MenThe season starts in earnest in April with a members’ black tie dinner at the club followed by a challenge competition the following day.
There are medal and Stableford competitions at weekends, and Wednesday competitions are either medal or other formats such as four-ball better-ball matchplay.
Higher-handicappers are well catered for with several competitions played from the less demanding yellow tees.
One of the highlights of the season is the club championship over 36 holes and two days in early August. The 2011 event was memorable for holes in one by father and son Mike and Aaron Wilde, with Mike recording his ace at the 235-yard eighth with a driver, then seeing his son, in the following group, repeat the feat using a three-iron.
Presidents’ Day in mid-July is open to the whole club, and five-day members and Ladies can also take part in the Stableford competitions, while Captains’ Day, in mid-June, is another Stableford event that traditionally draws a large field.
Invitations are posted at the end of February for entry to the club’s four major knock-out competitions. The Wright Cup is a handicap event, while the top players compete for the Scratch Salver. The Veterans’ Cup is contested by over-60s, and the Hartley Cup is a mixed foursomes.
Four-ball better-ball knock-outs take place in summer and winter.

Ladies
The Ladies are supporters of all the premier county events run by the Surrey Ladies County Golf Association, including the Hicks Trophy, Inter-Club Handicap Foursomes and the Derry Cup, a scratch knock-out between representative teams of three players with home and away matches in each round.
Then there is the Pearson Trophy, a team event played in a group format over the winter followed by a knock-out phase with the eventual winners going on to represent Surrey against the champions from Hertfordshire, Kent and Middlesex.
Teams are also entered in national competitions, such as the Peugeot Ladies Golf Union Coronation Foursomes and the Daily Mail Foursomes.
There are friendly matches throughout the year, including prestigious fixtures against the likes of Wentworth and St George’s Hill.
The Ladies Club Championship is played over 36 holes on a single day, while the Ladies Seniors (over 60s) event, also over 36 holes, is held over two days.
Founded in 2003, Cooler Ideas is an independent, privately owned business.
Our experience shows that customers do not want to think too hard about their water supply. They are more interested in growing their own businesses and expect us to look after their water needs and ensure that their

MixedCamberley Heath is proud to be an all-inclusive club, and this is reflected in the many mixed competitions throughout the year, mostly on Bank Holidays, to enable as many people as possible to participate.
The mixed competitions give members the opportunity to meet new people, and also play different formats such as greensomes (in the Pilgrim Decanter and Tandy Cup) and Canadian greensomes (Uniacke Cup).
August Bank Holiday Monday sees an event guaranteed to test any relationship to the limit… the Boxall Bowl, the brainchild of Colin Boxall, (father of former European Tour player, now Sky Sports commentator, Richard), a foursomes medal for married couples.
Juniors Our Juniors play in the Guildford and District League, featuring home and away matches against local clubs with the group winners progressing to the finals day. Camberley Heath were county champions in 2010 and represented Surrey in the all-England finals in Cheshire.
They also contest the Christies Cup, a Surrey Golf Union knock-out competition, and play several friendlies as well as club events, with the highlight being the 36-hole club championship in early September, with prizes for the overall winner, best nett score and best golfer aged under 14.

We work very hard to create a safe, relaxed and enjoyable environment in which our youngsters can learn the game of golf.
We have developed a very successful and highly popular Junior Academy system that welcomes new intakes of young golfers at various stages throughout the year.
The Academy features sessions for children as young as four, and is a wonderful way for our youngsters to be introduced to golf.
There are usually two sessions every Sunday… the first, for beginners, or younger players, is called the Cubs; while the second, for slightly older players, or those with previous experience of the sport, is called the Tigers. But the parameters are not fixed, and we can move children between the classes as necessary.
The Academy generally delivers several new members of our Junior section at the club, and is proving to be a great grounding in the sport for all those that attend.
Youngsters learn how to play the game, covering every aspect from rules and etiquette to driving the ball long and straight.
Our goal at the end of the eight-session programme is to turn all our Academy players into club members upon reaching the required standard.

Camberley Heath is proud to offer its members a truly outstanding 18-hole course, but feel that it is a magnificent venue and wonderful test that others should also be give the opportunity to enjoy.
To this end, we host a large selection of open competitions and invitation events throughout the year, which, as their names suggest, are open to all-comers.
Many of these are long-standing events in the Surrey golfing calendar and have developed into firm favourites with players from across the county and beyond.
Some feature intriguing formats, such as the Captains and Professionals Competition, usually held in early June, which is a foursomes invitation strokeplay in which the captains play off their current official handicaps and the professionals go off scratch.
Early July often features an invitation competition for Captains and Secretaries, who play for the Winckley Cup, while the following month sees the Captains and Lady Captains contest the Concord Trophy… both these events are played using a foursomes Stableford format.
In addition, there are Opens for Men, Ladies, Juniors and Seniors, as well as an Inter-Club Mixed Foursomes over 36 holes.

“I have given a great deal of thought to the Captain’s Charity for this very special year inthehistoryofCamberleyHeathGolfClub.
During the 100 years our Club has enjoyed a close relationship with the Armed Forces – many of the earlier Captains were indeed serving military personnel – and we have hosted many matches between the Armed Forces, for example, The Admirals versus The Generals.
During this period there have been twoWorldWars and numerous other conflictsaround the world where our forces have been engaged in defending our country and democracy. Many have lost their lives, and many more have returned injured, physically and mentally.
SothisiswhyIhavechosentwomainbeneficiariesofthisyear’sCaptain’sCharity:oneverywellknown,HelpForHeroes(www.helpforheroes.org.uk); and the other a relatively little-known smaller charity supporting the Armed Forces, the Lieutenant Dougie Dalzell MC Memorial Trust.
Lt Dalzell was posthumously awarded the Military Cross for bravery after having been killed by an IED in Afghanistan on February 18, 2010, his 27th birthday. The work undertaken by the Trust can be viewed on their website, at www.dougiedalzellmemorialtrust.co.uk

Visitors are very welcome at Camberley Heath Golf Club. Tee times are available from Monday to Thursday and can be booked up to seven days in advance, either through our website or by calling 01276 27905.
A discounted rate is available to holders of the Surrey County Card, and a handicap certificate, although preferred, is not essential.
The Clubhouse opens at 7am each day and closes around 10pm. During the winter months, these times may vary slightly.
The Pro Shop generally opens at 7.30am, with the practice area being available for use from six minutes later to coincide with the first tee time at 7.36am… the last tee time is around four and a half hours before sunset (see www.timeanddate.com for local sunset times).
Buggies, electric trolleys and golf clubs can be hired from the Pro Shop, subject to availability, but should be booked in advance to ensure use for the day.
To protect the peace and tranquillity of the club and course, mobile phones may only be used in the car park, locker rooms and reception area, and must be switched off at all other times.
We like to keep our Society Golf Days as flexible as possible, which is why we let you choose the content and cost of your day.
We have a number of alternative options available for breakfast, lunch and dinner, so you can tailor the day to your needs.
One thing is for sure… your golfing party will not go hungry, because the food selection is extensive. Choose from tea or coffee and bacon rolls, Danish pastries, a full English breakfast (at a supplement), sandwiches and chips in the bar, or a light lunch and a two- or three-course lunch or dinner to finish.

We highly recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment, normally between six months and a year before your big event… however, we still take late bookings, subject to availability, so it is always worth checking with us if you are planning for a special occasion.
We pride ourselves on having an extensive menu selection, which includes traditional three-course dinners, buffets and carvery lunches.
However, if you are looking for something a little different, we can also offer barbecues or a hog roast for parties numbering over 100.

All rates include projector (simply bring your own laptop and plug in), use of TV and DVD players, screen, flipchart and easel.

There has always been an active social calendar at Camberley Heath Golf Club, and, with our purpose-built Clubhouse, we find that our Members are keen to use the facilities at every available opportunity.
Whether it is enjoying the eagerly-anticipated Sunday Carvery with family and friends, or taking part in one of the popular quiz nights that liven up many a winter evening, there is certainly no shortage of off-course opportunities to catch up with old friends or perhaps meet new acquaintances.
Whatever the time of year, there is something going on, whether it’s Christmas lunches, New Year’s Eve parties, celebrations for Mother’s Day or Father’s Day… if there is a notable event marked in the diary, there’s every chance we will be celebrating it here at Camberley Heath (and we also like to have fun even if there isn’t a special occasion!)
We sometimes organise trips to the theatre, and we are always willing to listen to suggestions from Members.
A Social Membership at Camberley Heath represents superb value for money. Members currently pay an annual levy of £100, a sum which is instantly put on their Membership Card, meaning they can immediately use that money to pay for food and drink at discounted rates.

How to Contact Us and Find Us
Directions • From Woking. Take the A320 and follow signs to Camberley. Just before the
town, take the first exit on to Portsmouth Road (A325) and after about half a mile turn into Golf Drive.
• M3 Southbound. Leave the motorway at Junction 3, take the A322 exit to Woking/Bracknell/Lightwater. At the next roundabout, take the third exit on to A322, signposted Bracknell/Bagshot. After about a mile, exit on to London Road (A30). Follow the road for about two miles before continuing on to the A325 Portsmouth Road. After a mile and a half, turn left into Golf Drive.
• M3 Northbound. Leave the motorway at Junction 4, exit towards Guildford/Farnham/Camberley/Farnborough/Aldershot/A31. Take the second exit at the next roundabout on to the A331. Go through one roundabout and after about half a mile exit on to Farnborough Road (A325) towards Camberley/Frimley/Hawley. Follow this road for just under two miles before turning right on to Golf Drive.
Public Transport The nearest railway stations are Frimley and Camberley, which are both around
two miles, or an eight-minute taxi ride, away. Frequent train services run to London Waterloo, normally involving a change at Ash Vale or Ascot. The journey time is around 70 to 75 minutes.
