ELEMENTAL VOIDSDreki, Iceland

Located on a remote site in Iceland, this lodge and spa for hikers creates tension with the dynamic and powerful ground plane by using pure geometries and datum lines, combined with a cavernous underside, which, in addition to creating a dialogue with the ground condition, mediates columns, voids, and occupiable spaces. The plan of the building is introverted, with a screened exterior walk way wrapping the entire perimeter, and the communal spaces all arranged around a central void, which provides access to the pools on the ground below. Other voids bring diffuse light into the spaces, provide framed views of the ground and sky, and create microclimates, which contain and shelter moss, steam, and pools.

NEXUS QUADRome, Italy

This “Museum of the City” is placed at the confluence of many connective urban arteries and acts as a nexus for the activity around the site. To accommodate site circulation, addition of valuable public space, and plenty of gallery space, the scheme stratifies these elements, allowing urban circulation to remain at ground level while the public space slopes down and the galleries hover above. The ground plane is articulated to allow light and views into the open, formative spaces below. The galleries above are shaped by poche, which house artifacts, hidden light, projections, and apertures, juxtaposing the ancient and contemporary city. Completed with Monty De Luna

REVITALIZEBruce Trail, Ontario

As an escape from our fast paced lives, this hiker’s shelter’s intent is to seclude and recharge its users. Located along an extensive hiking trail, the shelter has an introverted presence on the site, allowing hikers to find comfort in it’s controlled environment as an all season escape. The project manifests itself in layers of thermal control, which surround a woodstove-heated sauna, offering an intimate and restorative environment. The inner layer is intuitive and uses acrylic sensors/actuators to sense temperature and moderate air exchange, while the outer is robust and manually operable. Completed with Natalie Bellefleur

MAX’S BENCHWhere The Wild Things Are

Inspired by the fantastical stories of Maurice Sendak, this bench for Max of “Where the Wild Things Are” looks to inspire a sense of wonder in children and adults alike. Smooth and minimal on the exterior, this chair folds open, much like a storey book, to give way to a wild fur-and-feather inspired texture on the inside. This inside/outside condition also evokes the idea of the “wild thing” inside us all. The scale of this chair caters to children, and brings adults down to a lower level, making them feel child-like and putting them in the perfect position for story reading. Completed with Natalie Bellefleur

URBAN HUBToronto, Ontario

This project in Toronto is situated on the majority of a block at Yonge and Wellesley. The program for this project consists of residential units, live-work spaces, retail, theater with facilities and educational spaces, as well a large urban park. My strategy uses dramatic folds in the landscape at ground level to curate social gatherings, set the building and its facilities up as a spectacle, and render the entire site as a park. The theater is below ground level so that it can have its “peeled up” lobby access the busiest intersection and still allow for a pedestrian throughway across the site.

nARCHITECTSBrooklyn, New York

While working at nARCHITECTS I had the opportunity to become immersed in several projects at various stages. As a part of a small team working on the new Jack Layton Ferry Terminal and Park, I worked with the partners and team manager to conduct preliminary research, generate massing options both physically and digitally, create graphics, and independently design and model the façade. I also took on product research, design development drawings, and details for phase two of nARCHITECTS’ and James Corner Field Operation’s Navy Pier in Chicago, and created massing models, façade options, and renderings for a mercantile building on MIT’s campus. In addition to this, I contributed to marketing and creation of a new website.

BING THOM ARCHITECTSVancouver, British Columbia

During my time at Bing Thom Architects, I worked as a fully immersed team member on University of Chicago, Booth School of Business center in Hong Kong, from the creation of multiple concepts through to design development. My tasks included the production of presentation and working drawings, creation and revision of renders and diagrams, attendance at client and consultant meetings, and the development of a Revit model. During this time, I also created a vibrant and powerful set of renderings for the competition entry for the new Banff Center and Contributed to the construction of physical presentation and study models of varying scales.

HOSPERHaarlem, The Netherlands

During my time at Hosper, I was interested in exploring design in architecure’s peripheries in order to be able to design more comprehensively and at a larger and potentially more impactful scale. I was able to design projects both independently and in small teams and I had the chance to work on both landscape and urbanism projects. Working though other disciplines, along with touring Holland and much of Europe broadened my view on the world of design and its potentials.

URBAN ARTS ARCHITECTUREVancouver, British Columbia

Much of my time spent at UAA was devoted to creating vibrant and telling project graphics for various forms for public relations and promotion in order to highlight the firm’s community centered design and give residents of these communities an idea of what UAA’s proposals could do for them. I also spent a lot of time focusing on the early design of a private residence, constantly providing traction and input with many iterations of both physical and digital models.
