Scouting for Food is coming up Saturday, November 12. This is one of AFAC's largest food drives of the year. If you could help us spread the word within your congregations your help would be greatly appreciated. You may use the following information: Help the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) and the 36 Scout Troops and Packs of the Chain Bridge District as we go Scouting for Food on Saturday, November 12! The Scouts will be collecting donations of canned soups, beans, tuna, tomato, low-sugar cereal, cooking oil, and peanut butter (no glass please!). If a bag is delivered to your house on November 5, please leave your filled bag at your door-step by 9am on November 12. AFAC provides supplemental groceries to Arlington families in need and is currently serving more than 2,200 families every week. For more information, visit www.afac.org. Together we can collect 60,000 pounds of food for our neighbors in need! Bring Yarn Before November 6 Help Support Women in Haiti Katie Bishop, Pastor at New Hope UMC in Brunswick, MD, and former member at Calvary, recently returned from a trip to Haiti where Furcy Artisans Inspired to Hope (FAITH) is supporting young women learning to crochet items for sale here in America. Another team is leaving this week for Haiti and yarn is needed! Yarn should be worsted weight (not baby or light or heavy) and any color is acceptable. Donations can be left in the box marked YARN on the stage in Harris Hall. Pictured is one proud young lady showing off her newly crocheted shoulder bag. CPR Class Saturday, November 5 First Aid and CPR will be offered at Calvary on Saturday, November 5, from 2-5pm. The cost is $65. To register, please contact Beth Posey at [email protected]. Space is limited! Election Day Soup and Sandwich Hear Ye! Hear Ye! - Calling Good Citizens and Patriots!!! Election Time is with us. Every fourth year, for presidential elections, Calvary hosts a free luncheon for those who have voted. The idea is to leave passions and politics behind and enjoy a communal meal together -- to celebrate this nation and its remarkable gift of free choice of government for all. The luncheon will consist of soup, sandwich, beverage, and cookies. We never know whether we will serve 50 people or 300. We urgently need helpers: Monday, November 7, starting at 4pm to set up places at the tables, make sandwiches, and basically be ready for the next day. We'll also need help on Tuesday to ladle soup, reset tables, refill serving dishes, etc. The "Party" is from 11am until 1pm. The Helpers will be welcome at 10:00. It's been a difficult run-up to this Election, as we all are aware. Perhaps Calvary, as always, can reach out in this small way to salve the wounds and worry, looking forward with hope and good faith for our collective future. Please let Molly at the church or Randy Gracey ([email protected]; or 703- 920-4585) know if you can help. And thanks in advance!

We’re Looking for Feedback There’s a Survey Online Please share a story of how God’s will has impacted your life. Calvary’s website (www.calmeth.org) has an on-line form to share how God’s will has impacted your life, or you can submit your testimony in writing to the office. Reflections include: 1. When have you caught sight of/

glimpsed God's will for your life? 2. What are the differences that

Calvary is making for you in your personal/spiritual/daily life?

3. How do you envision Calvary’s future?

Family Ministries Many Ways to Engage in This Vital Ministry Area Looking for ways to help the family ministries at Calvary? BUY SOME AA BATTERIES! OR, save, clean, and bring in those jars! OR, sign up to send birthday cards. OR, consider helping to lead a small group for young men, middle and high school ages. OR, consider volunteering for Triple Threat. If you are an adult interested in volunteering, email Beth Posey at [email protected] for information! AND please, pray for this ministry to the children, youth and families in our community.

Support Family Ministries Growing Things The Family Ministries at Calvary has been able to use an outdoor space to create a classroom. Growing things, natural observations, and outdoor experiences are part of the dream for this space. Do you have heart for this? A meeting of those interested will be Sunday, October 30 at 12:30pm. All ideas are welcome! Contact Beth Posey [email protected] for more information!

Names for College Boxes Sought It’s that time again; to start collecting addresses for those young adults at college! Family Ministries sends a box of goodies to college students as a pick-me-up before finals for the semester, and to remind them THEY ARE LOVED. To include a student, please send the student’s name and address to [email protected]. Boxes should go out by the beginning of November. The cost of mailing a box is $12, which comes out of our family ministries budget..

Children’s Clothing Swap Saturday, November 12 from 10am-2pm Those in the community who are interested in this event may bring whatever clean (children’s) clothing on the morning of the event. If you see something you would like to take, do! If you have nothing to donate, well that is ok too. You don’t have to bring anything to pick from the clothing that the children in our community have outgrown. You are simply encouraged to take what you want. All items donated are available for FREE! Mark the date and save those clothes you are cleaning out of your closets. All remaining items will be donated to charity. This is for children’s clothing—no furniture or adult items. Thank you.

Online Book Group Are you interested in a study group, but timing is difficult? The on-line book group is beginning two new books! Callings, A StoryCorps Book by David Isay which looks at the purpose and passion of work and Carry On, Warrior: The Power of Embracing Your Messy, Beautiful Life by Glennon Doyle Melton is a touching look at being who we are, where we are. The format of the group is to receive an e-mail once a week with a starter question or thought. Participants in the group respond as they feel led (or not) to the whole group as we move through the book. For information, or to sign up, please contact Beth Posey at [email protected].

Praying Wives Every morning, wives can receive an e-mail guiding towards loving God and loving our husbands. Passages and notes are from Stormie O’Martin’s Power of a Praying Wife. To get more information e-mail Beth at [email protected].

There will also be an opportunity to bring non-perishable food (no canned pumpkin please) that will later be distributed to those in need in Arlington. Thank you!

Prayer Corner This is a space where prayers can be shared and lifted up. It will now provide the names of people or circumstances that are in need of prayer so that we can all pray for sorrows, joys, trials, and celebrations. The reason for prayer may not be included (for privacy considerations). If you would like to add a name to this list (please check to be sure it’s okay to share), please submit it in writing by using a prayer card during worship or sending an e-mail to [email protected]. Names will be kept on the list for one month unless a written extension or removal is requested. The date following each name is when the request was submitted to the church office. health issues Carlos—for a full recovery The family of Scott M. who passed away (10/9)
