Thank you To Our Confirmation Students

At the second service today, seven of our students, who attended confirmation camp this summer at Luther Glen, will assist in worship and share some of what they learned at camp. They are James Cederstav, Anna Czajkowski, Derren Geiger, Avery Jones, Audrey Nations, Alex Stafford, and Emily Stangland.

Celebrating Two Faith Milestones!

Today, we recognize three 7th grade students who started their confirmation studies this past week: Grace Creelman, Audrey Nations, and Alex Stafford. Their mentors are, respectively, Vicki Turner, Meredithe Mainquist, and Bill Hildebrand. Please check out their bios in the narthex and

encourage them as they begin a new stage in their faith journey.

Also, today we welcome three year olds into Sunday School class. In recognition of this important step, each student will receive a new Whirl Storybook bible to use at home and in class. We offer our blessings to them and their families as they take this

exciting step!

Adult Crossings: God’s Journey with Us

This twelve week series is a Basic Bible course but one with thought provoking questions. It is a unique Bible overview de-signed for those with a limited history of studying the Bible and who have a hunger to learn more. Together, we will explore what many scholars consider the eight core stories of the Bible, cover-ing the most simple, elemental, and non-negotiable story line that lies at the heart of biblical faith. The core stories include: God’s Call; The Exodus; Sinai Covenant; Promised Land; The Rule of David; The Life of Jesus; The Cross; and Resurrection Life. The study guide, produced by Select Learning, gives clear, easily un-derstood background on each section. The DVD presentations are made by Dr. Mark A. Throntveit, a professor of Hebrew and Old Testament at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, and Dr. Thomas G. Long, Bandy Professor of Preaching at Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Discussion will be facilitated by Laura Riesenberg. Classes will be in Gathering Room West. Register in the court-yard on Sunday mornings or by contacting the church office 858-755-2855. The study guide is $15; donations to cover the cost are appreciated. If needed, hardbound NRSV bibles are available for $8; a limited number of Bibles are available for checkout.

Lift Up Your Voice! Calvary Choir begins Thursday September 24*, from 7:30-8:45 pm in the Music Room: all are welcome (youth & adults). No mu-sic background required; come to learn and develop your skills and share God's Word through song. Email Aaron Mitchell at [email protected] or simply come to rehearsal.

International Day of Peace Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The United Nations General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.

Thank You for your Mission Support

Dear Partners in the Ministry of the Pacifica Synod,

Early in her ministry our Presiding Bishop, the Rev. Elizabeth Eaton, introduced four emphases to foster an understanding of who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America: We are church, we are Lutheran, we are church together, and we are church for the

sake of the world.

One of the key ways that we live into this understanding of the ELCA is through the faithful and generous Mission Support of the congregations in the Pacifica Synod. I write to offer thanks, on be-half of Bishops Finck and Eaton, the Pacifica Synod Council, and your sisters and brothers in Christ throughout the Pacifica Synod and the ELCA, for your faithful partnership as it was expressed

through your Mission Support in fiscal year 2014-2015.

Please find a Certificate of Appreciation and Contribution Report for the fiscal year ending January 31, 2015. $43,200 is the amount Pacifica Synod received from your congregation during the

months of February 2014 to January 2015.

We are church. We are Lutheran. We are church together. We are church for the sake of the world. Thanks to the faithful reflection of these emphases through the Mission Support of the congregations of our synod, we are able to: Support new and renewing ministries in our synod and through-

out the church, giving fresh voice to the gospel in the communi-ties where God plants us

Train leaders for the current and future needs of the church and take them deeply into our Lutheran identity

Walk alongside our congregations and leaders in the mobility process and at other times when help, support or encourage-ment are needed

Step forward as a church serving God’s people in times of pov-erty, hunger, disaster, disease and injustice, domestically and all around the world

Thanks be to God for this witness! Thanks be to God for your faith-ful partnership! Serving Christ with you,

Rev. Tim Philips, Director for Evangelical Mission and Assistant to the Bishop
