A publication of Calvary Baptist Church, Tupelo, Mississippi SEPTEMBER 2018 From Your Pastor If you have ever taken up a new hobby or sought to learn something new, then you prob- ably understand that many mes there is a steep learning curve that must be navigated. I remember several things that I had no knowledge of when I began, but as I spent me praccing I began to learn more about them. I also developed an understanding of them that helped me to be beer at what I was doing. As much as you learn, there really is always more to learn. There is always room for improvement and always an opportunity to get beer. In a spiritual sense, there is a tension of realizing that I am not what I should be. To un- derstand that I am sll growing and desiring for the Holy Spirit to work and move as he molds me into something more. Paul’s words to the Philippians are encouraging when we consider that we are not what we will be. In Philippians 1:6 Paul tells them that, “he who began a good work in you will be faithful to bring it to compleon unl the day of Christ Jesus.” God’s work in us conn- ues unl the moment we close our eyes in death and open them to see Him face to face. We should be encouraged, and the Philippians must have been encouraged, as they were reminded about the Lord’s work in their lives. Paul reminds them of God's faithfulness to us. He calls us deeper, but also works in us to bring about the change that we seek. Even when circumstances are grim, or we are struggling, God is working to transform us into His image. Let me encourage you to join us for fellowship! This month there will be many opportu- nies through worship, bible study, prayer, and gathering. Be a part of what God is doing in the life of His church. God Bless, Pastor Chris Margaret Lackey Offering for State Missions Calvary's Goal: $5,000 1 Caller Calvary

Mission Trip to Nottingham, England – June 21-28, 2019

This ministry will be connecting with one of our church partnerships - Arnold Road Evangelical Church in Nottingham, England.Nottingham is a city of over 400,000 people, but only TEN churches are actively sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ in that area. As you can imagine, the odds are overwhelming...What I have found in scripture, though, is that those odds are NOTHING to our God!Our partnership that week will be to be part of what they are doing evangelisti-cally - we'll go door to door (with some of their membership), we'll go to schools, and we'll go wherever we have the opportunity to share the hope of Christ. It's exciting! There will be an informational meeting October 7th at 7:15 p.m. in the FMC Activity Room Details you need to know:1 - $100 deposit is due by October 7th.2 - An informational meeting will be held on October 7th at 7:15 p.m. in the FMC Activity room (immediately following Compelled by Love)3 - You must have finished 10th grade (though I am open to those finishing 9th grade, I would like to schedule an appointment to talk with him or her).4 - My hope is to bring the cost to, or below, $700 per person. We have been told by Arnold Road Evangelical Church that if we pay for the FLIGHT, they will handle all expenses (lodging, food) while we are in Nottingham. If you have immediate questions, please let me know. At our info meeting I'll share with you ways that we can get our cost down, and I'll let you know some of the things we will need to do soon. Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon!

STUDENT ROCKWEDNESDAYS AT 6 PM

With the school year back in full swing, our students are probably praying more now than they did over the summer! “Lord, help me not fail this test! I know I for-got to study, but if you help me pass it, I promise I’ll…” We’ve all probably been there at some point. But prayer isn’t an emergency exit! Prayer is regular com-munication with God, and it is not only to be done in times of need. We should pray to worship God, to confess our sins, and to thank Him for His goodness and faithfulness, as well as to pray for needs that we and others have.

Each September an event called See You at the Pole takes place on school cam-puses across the country. On this morning thousands of students will gather at their respective school’s flagpole and pray. The SYATP organization even blocks out the entire week of the event (this year the dates are 9/23 through 9/29) and calls it the Global Week of Student Prayer. The goal is for students to pray for their schools, classmates, teachers, families, churches, country, world, etc.

Please be praying for SYATP 2018—that God would cause revival to spread among students, and that they would shine the light of Jesus wherever they go!

Choices. We have so many choices in life. Each time I gather in a large group with kids at Calvary, I go over the rules and what is expected so that we can have a good time. After explaining the rules, I tell them that now the choice is theirs. They can choose to obey or not obey. I cannot force them to choose to obey, it is a decision that only they can make. We talk about consequences when they choose to not obey, which is sitting out during gym time, which is huge for them. We talk about the joy and fun we can have when we choose to obey. I was re-cently convicted of how we, as adults, tend to focus on our children’s choices, and yet not think much about the choices we make. I think I should probably start my day by saying, “Candice, you know what God’s Word says and you can choose to obey or not obey. God will not make you obey. It is your choice.” I can choose to study God’s Word, talk with Him throughout my day, have patience in-stead of a short fuse, forgive others instead of harboring bitterness, be thankful for everything I have been blessed with instead of wanting more, talk lovingly and build others up instead of gossiping, and on and on. Parents, I want to en-courage you to choose to be like Jesus daily so that the children we have the privilege of raising can see that we live out what we speak about. Living a godly life requires obedience to God’s Word. Obedience is a choice. “Choose this day whom you will serve”. Joshua 24:15
