The Shepherd’s Notebook for the Season of Advent

Prayers Please check the weekly announcement bulletin for those people needing our urgent prayers. If you have any prayer requests, please call or email the church office. Please also continue to pray for the following Calvary family and friends: Shut-Ins: Betty Schraith, Lorraine Zembinski. Long Term Care: Elaine Shaw, Paul & Marj Skarie, Lorene & Greg Fleckenstein, Pat Kurtz, Shirley Derse, Dyana Solheim (former member of Calvary & friend of Donna Mueller), Fern MacGillis (mother-in-law of Jim Harrison), Wayne Higgin, son-in-law of Ruth Yankus; Carol Manning (cousin of Pat Treutelaar), Mickey Rash, Bill Rash Jr. (son of Mickey Rash).

elcome to Advent, the first season of the Christian Church Year. During these four weeks of Sun-days beginning November 27, as people of faith and hope, we’ll prepare for the coming of Christ: Past, Present, and Future.

As Advent approaches, I can’t help but celebrate the truth that an angel once spoke to another woman of faith, in an-other place and time. Her name was Mary. Her mission: Make the invisible visible. Become the Mother of God-in-the-flesh. Her Savior, your Savior and mine. Jesus our Christ. Luke 1:37 states the holy truth:

“For nothing is impossible with God.” The invisible God became visible to us in Christ more than 2,000 years. What seems impossible – new life starting now and never ending – becomes possible by nothing more and nothing less than faith. And what an incredibly freeing gift that is -- to know that our eternal future is secure. Bought and paid for by the precious blood of that little Baby Jesus, who came and grew up, lived and died and rose again, to save us from our sin and our selves.

From seeing the invisible, to believing the impossible, to receiving the incredible – friends, that is precisely the jour-ney that our Lord is leading Calvary on right now. And, there’s no better time than Advent to engage this journey of faith in an even bolder, more vigorous, more intentional way.

As I write these words, you and I are about 4-1/2 months into the interim journey that we began last August 1st. The Holy Spirit has been and continues to be at work, and a new, re-newed Calvary is being born. The Christ who never aban-doned Calvary in difficult times continues to be among us: In Word, in Sacrament, and in a holy community that is being prepared for what just could be an incredible future. Christ

promises to continue to be among us, and He looks to us to keep on being faithful until He returns in person.

I can’t wait to see what will be born anew at Calvary. Can you? Already there are glimpses of this renewed Calvary everywhere. We see it in the faces of our youngsters when they come up for the Young Peoples’ Message, and astound us with their questions and insights. We find it in the emerging mission and ministry plan that will be presented to the con-gregation at the 2012 annual meeting. We hear it in the voices of those who’ve chosen to make Calvary their church home. We sense it in our growing relationship with the North American Lutheran Church. We find it in the continuation of vibrant ministries with families of all ages, in faith-promoting ministries of worship, learning, witness, service and steward-ship.

Imagine that! When we care for the renewed Body of Christ that is Calvary Lutheran Church, we are caring for Christ, even as He first cared , and continues to care, for us!

Come, Lord Jesus – at Christmas, now, and always. Make your home with us, that, by faith, we would see the invisible, believe the impossible and receive the incredible. After all, NOTHING is impossible with You. Amen!

In Christ and His Service,

From the Church Office • By the constitution we are required to maintain an

active membership roll. Membership at Calvary is indicated by participating in its ministry in worship, communing, and giving in time, talent, and money. By the time of the Annual Meeting, the membership will be reviewed. During the stewardship activity in November, people had an opportunity to renew their membership and commitment to Calvary. If you should have any questions in regard to this, please speak with the pastor. The goal is not numbers, but meaningful ministry for an individual and for us as a congregation.

• Please remember to support our advertisers on the inside cover of the newsletter. With these ads, Cal-vary’s newsletter is printed at no cost to us.

• Please remember to notify the church office (in writ-ing or by phone) with a change to your address/phone number/e-mail. Thank you.

• Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, the church office will be closed on Friday, November 25.

• The church office will be closed at noon on Friday, December 23. In addition, the office will be closed on Monday, December 26. From December 27-30 (Tuesday-Friday), office hours will be 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

• As we approach the end of 2011, we ask you to please look carefully and prayerfully at your finan-cial giving for this year.

• 2012 Offering Envelopes will be mailed directly to your homes mid-December. Please watch the mail for this delivery.

• The financial books close on Friday, December 30. To ensure proper credit for 2011 tax purposes, please have your contributions in the church office by the 30th . December Mission of the Month Luther Manor Philosophy

The philosophy of Luther Manor is to fulfill our mission and vision by collaborating with clients, their families (advocates), friends and staff to ensure that actual and perceived needs are assessed and addressed in ways that:

For more than 50 years, Luther Manor has been serving sen-iors and their families. An initial gift in 1957 led to the founding of the United Lutheran Program for the Aging, Inc. Several years later, the Association of Southeastern Wiscon-sin Lutheran Congregations created Luther Manor, located in the quiet Milwaukee suburb of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. To-day, Luther Manor is an outstanding community of housing and health care options for seniors.

Luther Manor is an accredited Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC)

• Serving nearly 800 residents on a 29-acre campus in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin

• More than 693 full-time and part-time employees • More than 600 adult and teen volunteers providing more

than 54,000 hours of volunteer service annually • 73 corporately-affiliated Lutheran congregations from the

Greater Milwaukee area • 18-member Board of Directors, elected to 3-year terms

NALC News

Around the NALC...

Constitutions for the national NALC, our mission district, and Calvary Church have been written and are being submitted for review and approval.

There are currently 17 congregations in Wisconsin and Upper Michigan which have formally joined the NALC. There are other congregations, including some local, who are discerning and exploring NALC membership.

The NALC is is also preparing to welcome Canadian congre-gations. The NALC has appointed a Canadian Commission to comply with any legal issues that may be involved.

NALC retirement and insurance plans have been approved and enrollment has begun. Ministers have the choice to trans-fer any or all of their funds from the ELCA plan to the NALC plan. The NALC plan is considered comparable or better than the ELCA plan and could potentially save some congregations some money.

This is the first in a series of Crossroads reports intended to keep you abreast of the NALC and Calvary’s NALC Mission District. More information may be found online at the web-site of the North American Lutheran Church: thenalc.org.

Nine USA mission districts (regional-wide organizations) have been formed, including our own Wisconsin and Upper Michi-gan area district. The districts support local congregations within their particular regions. Calvary member, Rich Bloomberg was elected to the Executive Council in our district.

Reformation Fest October 30, 2011

Bishop John Bradosky was the honored guest at Calvary on Reformation Sunday, October 30, 2011. Bishop Bradosky delivered the sermon at our morning worship service, which included confirmation of five Calvary ninth grade students. He also shared information during the adult education hour following worship. In the afternoon at Calvary’s Reformation

Fest, Bishop Bradosky addressed an assembly which included members of Calvary, members from area churches (both NALC churches and non-NALC churches), and congregation members form outside the area and outside the state. The af-ternoon session included a Q&A time when attendees were given the opportunity to ask specific questions of the bishop.

Opportunities

Third World Shoppe The Third World Handcraft Shoppe has donated $230,000 back to Third World charities. By supporting the Third World Hand-craft Shoppe, you too can help some of the poorest people on the planet rebuild their lives.

The Third World Shoppe is located at Capitol Drive Lutheran Church at 5229 W. Capitol Drive. You can find out more about the Third World Shoppe and view their hours at their website: http://www.capitoldrivelutheran.org

Click on the Third World Shoppe link.

The Third World Shoppe will once again set up shop in the Cal-vary narthex, giving members the opportunity to purchase unique, hand-made gifts.

The mission of the Third World Shoppe is to serve developing countries by promoting their goods. Behind the items are sto-ries…like baptismal napkins made by little girls in India who were shunned by their families. “This project takes them off the street, puts them into a school. They’re educated. They can stay in the project till they’re about 20 years of age,” says Jerry Koepke, one of the store’s founders. Artisans get true value for their pieces. In turn, they enjoy a higher standard of living.

ADVENTure The season of Advent is a special time to open our hearts and be reminded of the true meaning of Christmas, and prepare for the celebration of our Savior’s birth. Do you want Advent to be an adventure for your children too? GREAT!

During Advent, beginning November 30, Calvary will be hosting a dinner each week from 6:00-6:45pm followed by a brief 7:00pm worship service. While the adults are in worship, our young members will have the opportunity to learn more about this special time of year in ADVENTure!

Kids, age 0 to 8th grade, are invited to come in their PJ’s for our ADVENTure! (feel free to change between dinner and worship) Each week will have a theme, songs to sing (more practice for the Family Service), a craft project and a bedtime story!

Please make time in your busy holiday preparations to prepare for Christ’s birth with us!

Christmas Eve Family Worship Service This year’s worship will take place on Saturday, December 24 at 4 pm. We again want to make this worship service truly a “family” worship, and we’re inviting children, youth AND par-ents to take leadership roles as we celebrate Christ’s birth. Our service this year will, of course, be the story of Jesus’ birth, and based on the book The Christmas Pageant, written by Jacqueline Rogers.

To help prepare for this worship, there are a few things we ask. First, if you know your family plans to attend this service (Dec 24, 4 pm) and would like to take part in the service, please sign-up on the forms posted outside of your child’s Sunday School room by December 4. Second, please make note of the following rehearsal schedule:

• Children will rehearse each week during a portion of the edu-cation hour during December.

• There will be extended rehearsal during education hour on December 18 from 10:30 to Noon. We will also be fitting all participants for costumes during this time.

• Family Worship, Saturday, December 24 at 4:00om. Please arrive at Calvary at 3:30 to dress and warm up for worship.

If your child will not be in attendance for the Family Worship Service, please note: They should still attend Sunday School during December! We will be using the education hour for learning the Christmas story in word, song, and action. This is our December curriculum, we ask for your support in teaching your children the true meaning of Christmas. For more informa-tion or if you have any questions, please contact Linda Grey or Angie Schatz

Children’s Ministry Opportunities

Ministry of Mothers (a.k.a. MOMs) Mothers of all ages and seasons are invited and welcome!!! The group will be watching and discussing a “Moms Group Curricu-lum” video series from Heart at Home. The topics range from marriage to parenting to personal growth.

MOMs meets monthly, on the first Thursday. The group meets in the media room at church from 6:30 to 8:00pm. So, leave the

kids at home and take some time to relax, refuel, and reenergize yourself!

See you there: Thursday, December 1!

PST Update & Calvary Finances

Calvary Financial Position as of October 31, 2011

The pastoral search team has been working on the congrega-tional profile and we plan to submit it to the NALC by the end of December. This is the document that Bishop Spring and Bishop Bradosky will use to match Calvary with prospec-tive candidates.

Two major components of the profile are the strategic plan, which will be submitted to the Congregation Council in De-cember, and the list of areas of ministry important to Calvary members as compiled from the congregational survey you received earlier in November. Please be sure to return your paper survey to church or submit it electronically via the link provided on the print survey and in the Calvary Connections email newsletter. Remember that we need your responses by Sunday, December 4 in order to compile the results and sub-mit Calvary’s profile by year end.

Once the bishop has received the congregational profile, we will proceed through the following steps:

We will develop an interview format and conduct a practice interview. • We will receive names of candidates from the bishop’s office. • We will conduct first interviews, reference checks, etc. • We will conduct second interviews. • We may visit candidates’ churches. • We will conduct final interviews. • We will settle on a candidate, create a salary package, etc. We will set a date for a congregational vote on the call. We will continue to work diligently and we thank you for your input, your prayers, your support, and your understand-ing. The new year promises to bring blessings beyond meas-ure to our congregation!
