This month’s scripture is from Galatians 4:16-18. "Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth? They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that ye might affect them. But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing, and not only when I am present with you.” INFLUENCES. According to Webster’s dictionary, influence means power exerted over the minds or behavior of others. We all have influences in our lives. It is how we handle these influences and interpret exactly how these influences will affect us. Children are easily influenced by their parents and their peers. Adults are easily influenced by other adults. Christians are easily influenced by their pastor, the bible, and other Christians. We are all influenced by either something or someone. If you are following someone that is doing the right thing, that is okay. Support and encourage them whenever you can. However, if you are following someone that you know is not doing the right thing, you may have to ask yourself, ”Should I continue to follow this person?” If you have uneasy feelings or there are situations that make you feel uncomfortable, remove yourself from the situation and the person. Influences can be very strong at times and it may take a great deal of will power to overcome them. Sometimes we have no control over the situation. That is the perfect time when we should seek the Lord for his power to help us to do and say the right things at all times. Remember, only what you do for Christ will last and will help you keep control of your influences.
We hope everyone enjoyed reading the June 2012 issue of the Church Chat. However, all the praise, all the honor, and all the glory, belong to God, because without Him, the Church Chat would not be possible. Thank you for the many, many compliments and words of encouragement.

HEALTHY SNACKSFor Dental Health, Delete Cookies and Dip, Baby, Dip!By Althea Zanecosky Your family can enjoy snacks and discourage tooth decay at the same time. When bacteria, normally found in the mouth, come in contact with sugars and some starches, they feed on these substances and produce an acid capable of dissolving enamel on teeth. For this reason, the earlier sugarless snacks are introduced and encouraged, the better chance your child has of continuing the habit and thereby having healthier teeth.
That’s important because dental disease has reached staggering proportions. It affects 95% of all Americans. Tooth decay is five times more common in children than asthma. Good dental health is the result of daily brushing and flossing, regular dental checkups — and good food habits.
Tooth-Friendly SnacksThe average American will eat 35,000 cookies in a lifetime! Here are some healthier snack options.
Go for healthy grains. Whole-grain foods — such as whole-grain pretzels or tortillas and high-fiber, whole-grain
cereals — provide energy with some staying power.
Dip, baby, dip! Serve baby carrots or other raw veggies with fat-free ranch dressing or hummus. Dip graham cracker sticks or fresh fruit in fat-free yogurt. Keep out a jar of peanut butter or a snack container for celery, apple or banana dunking or spreading.
Circle back for a mini-breakfast. Serve breakfast foods such as scrambled eggs and whole-grain waffles as healthy snacks in the afternoon.
Broaden the menu. Offer out-of-the-usual fare, such as pineapple, cranberries, red or yellow peppers, mangoes, tangelos or roasted soy nuts.
Sweets can be okay. Healthy snacks for kids don’t have to be bland. To satisfy your child’s sweet tooth, offer fat-free pudding, frozen yogurt or frozen fruit bars. Make smoothies with skim milk, fat-free yogurt and fresh or frozen fruit.
Tooth Decay BustersOngoing research indicates that antioxidants and other nutrients found in fruits, vegetables and dairy may strengthen immunity and help the mouth’s ability to handle cavity-causing bacteria attacks. Include these items regularly in your child’s snack defense line-up:
• Antioxidant vitamins such as vitamin C and other nutrients from fruits and vegetables help protect gums and other tissues from cell damage and bacterial infection.
• Cheese unleashes a burst of calcium that mixes with plaque and sticks to the teeth, protecting them from the acid that causes decay and helping to rebuild tooth enamel.
• Crisp fruits and raw vegetables such as apples, carrots and celery help clean plaque from teeth and freshen breath.
• Fresh cranberries interrupt the bonding of oral bacteria before they can form damaging plaque.
• Milk contains lactic acid that can kill bacteria that cause gum disease.

TIPPED SCALES
Christ’s love is greater than anyone can ever know, but I pray that you will be able to know that love.
EPHESlANS 3:19
It wasn’t right that spikes pierced the hands that formed the earth. And it wasn’t right that the Son of God was forced to hear the silence of God.
It wasn’t right, but it happened.
For while Jesus was on the cross, God sat on his hands. He turned his back. He ignored the screams of the innocent.
He sat in silence while the sins of the world were placed upon his Son. And he did nothing while a cry a million times bloodier than John’s echoed in the black sky: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
Was it right? No. Was it fair? No. Was it love? Yes.

GOD’S WORDFOR THE FAMILY
The Word of God establishes the family as the most important Christian social unit in our society and gives us guidance for proper relationships so that we might be everything God chooses for us, both individually and corporately. These scriptures will help you learn more about the promises for your family, God’s guidance for a better family relationship, and how God truly wants to bless and direct every Christian family for His glory.
GOD GUIDES IN YOUR RELATIONSHIPS
“WITH HIM”
But now, O Lord, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.
Isaiah 64:8
In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness. Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me. For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name’s sake lead me, and guide me. Pull me out of the net that they have laid privily for me: for thou art my strength. Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me. O Lord God of truth.
Psalms 31:1-5
GOD GUIDES IN YOUR RELATIONSHIPS
“WITH YOUR NATION”
It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes.
Psalms 118:9
Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,
Titus 3:1

PASTOR GARTH G. GITTENSFOCUS ON THE FAMILY NIGHT
I am of the firm opinion that the root cause of breakdown in our communities is a breakdown in our families and it’s time for the church to return it’s focus on family life and family values. To this end Wednesday nights at Calvary are about to change, instead of Bible Study as usual Wednesday nights are now titled “Focus On The Family Nights”.
6:00 – 6:55 pmThe night begins with a hot meal – at no charge – served between 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm this is to cater to people who come directly from work and children coming directly from school. The menu will vary, but along lines of Burgers &French Fries, Hot Dogs, Spaghetti and Meat Balls, Hot Wings etc.
At this time we will have a homework corner set up where kids can complete their homework under supervision and may even receive help.
The idea is to afford parents a measured mid-week break from the rigorous routine of school-age parenting.
7:00 – 7:30 pm During this time we gather in the upper sanctuary for praise and worship. The idea at this time is twofold: to allow our praise and worship team to introduce the congregation to new praise songs and simultaneously to allow members of our community who work on Sundays an opportunity to worship with us.
7:35 – 8:25 pmThis is our Education hour: we break up into specially designed classes for the purpose of practice oriented Bible Study.
THE JOY OF BEINGA WOMAN
Getting a great pedicure at your favorite salon. I’m certain there are statistics somewhere proving that women truly relax and feel all sensual after having one of these performed. I positively melt into my seat and let everything go when a pedicurist works on my feet.

50 AWESOME PRE AND POST-WORKOUT SNACKSby Kellie Davis
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day for some, but for those who manage to squeeze some gym time into their routine, pre- and post-workout foods can be just as huge. While everyone’s nutritional requirements are different depending on their goals and activities, these snacks can offer the right balance of carbohydrates, fats, and protein to satisfy hunger, fuel workouts, and aid in recovery. Read on for Greatist’s 50 favorite pre- and post-workout snacks, including some go-to recipes from our trusted health and fitness pros.
Pre-Workout SnacksThe body works to build muscle and recover 24 hours a day, not just during that one-hour session at the gym. Luckily, smartly timed snacks can give the body the fuel it needs to gain muscle, burn fat, and recover as best it can. Pre-workout, that usually means grabbing a snack about 30-60 minutes in advance, depending on its size and contents, and how much that stomach’s actually grumbling. All ready to go? Check out these 25 options to start things right:
1. Protein Creamcicle: Put a twist on the classic kids’ treat by blending 1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder, 1 cup orange juice, and 1 cup ice. Trainer and fitness expert @JCDFitness does it!
2. Fruitsation shake: Blend 1 scoop of your favorite whey protein flavor with ½ cup ice, and
1 cup frozen berries for a sweet energy boost, suggests strength coach @Roglaw.
3. Cha-Cha coconut shake: Infuse 1 scoop chocolate whey protein with 2 teaspoons of extra virgin coconut oil. Girls Gone Strong co-founder @JenComasKeck loves this!
4. Star-buffs shake: Need a pre-workout pick-me-up? Greatist’s fitness editor suggests blending 1 cup iced coffee (keep the ice) with 1 scoop chocolate whey protein.
5. Dressed up oats: Load up on carbohydrates for a longer workout with ½ cup cooked steel-cut oats topped with 1 tablespoon dried fruit and 1 tablespoon shaved almonds.
6. Perfect yogurt parfait: Feeling fancy, huh? Top ¼ cup nonfat yogurt with ½ cup whole grain cereal and ½ cup fresh strawberries.
7. Yoberries a-go-go: For the perfect blend of carbs and protein, try 1 cup non-fat vanilla bean Greek yogurt — which often packs more protein and probiotics than regular plain yogurt — with ½ cup fresh blueberries.
8. Eggs n’ toast: Have a heartier appetite? Try 1 or 2 hard-boiled eggs with 1 slice of whole-wheat toast.
9. Fruit and Cottage: Top ½ cup cottage cheese — a low calorie and higher protein option — with ½ cup fresh pineapple, berries, or melon. And voila!
10. PB Apple: For a quick carb fuel-up, slice 1 medium apple and serve with 2 tablespoons all-natural peanut butter.
11. Classic fruit cup: Prefer to keep it sweet but simple? Combine 1 cup berries, melon, banana, and oranges — oh my!
12. Dried fruit: For a quick pre-workout fix, try ¼ cup serving of dried berries, apricots, and pineapple, says Greatist Expert Jessica Redmond.
13. Fruit leather: Need something light that makes you feel like a kid again? Try 1 single serving of fruit leather. Have a little extra time? Roll some out in the kitchen.
14. Energy in a bar: With so many options in the aisle, try opting for a bar with the most natural ingredients. While protein count is key, also check the sugar content (it shouldn’t rival what’s found in the candy aisle!).
15. Chicken n’ sweets: For a fast bite, grab 2-4 ounces (or a palm-sized amount) of sliced chicken with an equal portion size of sweet potatoes, suggests Greatist Expert Dan Trink.
16. Oats n’ eggs: Not just for breakfast, try ½ cup cooked oatmeal and 2 whole eggs seasoned with salt and pepper.
17. PB & B toast: Fuel up with 1-2 tablespoons of all-natural peanut butter and half a sliced banana on whole-wheat toast, says Greatist Expert Lisa Moskovitz.

TIPS FOR SENIORS
Crime prevention is everyone’s responsibility, not just a job for law enforcement Seniors can learn how to protect themselves from crime by following these simple. common-sense suggestions. Share these tips with your neighbors and friends, too, and make it tough for criminals to work in your neighborhood.
At home... -- Always keep your doors and windows locked. Install dead bolt locks on all your doors. -- Keep your home well lit at night, inside and out, and keep your curtains closed at night. -- Install a peephole in your front door so you can see callers without opening the door. -- Ask for proper identification from deliverymen or strangers. Don’t be afraid of asking if they are legitimate they won’t mind.
-- If a stranger asks to use your telephone, offer to place the call for him/her yourself. Never let a stranger
into your home.-- Do not leave notes on your door when you are gone. and do not hide your keys under the mat or in other conspicuous places. -- Never give out information over the phone indicating you are alone or that you won’t be home at a certain time. -- When you are gone for more than a day. make sure your home looks and sounds occupied - use an automatic timer to turn on lights and a radio or TV.

Driving with the windows closed also improves gas mileage. -- Lock packages and other valuables in the trunk. NOBODY’S FAULT
And the man said, “The woman whom Thou gavest to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate.”
Genesis 3:12
Although we technically have six children in our family, occasionally we are visited by a seventh child called “Nobody.” Nobody spills apple juice, jelly and peanut butter on the floor and then walks off and leaves it-presumably to let it grow. Nobody leaves doors wide open during the fiercest heat wave in the summer and when the wintry winds are whistling.
The interesting thing about Nobody is that he never gets credit for beds made and rooms that are picked up. But when games, toys and dishes are strewn all over the living room floor, Nobody gets the blame, receiving full accusations by six kids. “Nobody did it.” Barbara and I would probably discipline Nobody if we could ever catch him.
In Genesis, Adam tries to avoid his responsibility by blaming Eve for eating from the forbidden tree. In fact, He even seems to insinuate that perhaps God is at fault for giving him Eve as a mate!
Adam and our invisible child, Nobody, are reflections of the irresponsibility of people in our society. They want to clarify their “rights,” but when accountability and responsibility come knocking, they flee for the back door.
The kids of this culture aren’t being told there are consequences for their wrong choices. Undoubtedly some of them eventually find themselves in a jail cell, puzzled that we still have some laws that do hold us accountable for our actions.
Let me suggest that you and your mate model a different message. When you have a conflict, quarrel or disagreement, take responsibility for
resolving it. When you make a mistake, admit it-even if it isn’t all your fault. Instead of finding a flaw in your spouse’s argument and blaming him or her, take responsibility and say you’re sorry. I am confident that you don’t want to be married to “Nobody.”
Discuss: Does anyone called “Nobody” live at your home? How have you noticed a tendency, in your own life, to deny you’re at fault? How can you encourage your children to take responsibility for their own actions? Pray: Ask God to help you resist the tendency to blame others, and be responsible and accountable to God and your mate for your life.
MARRIAGE HUMOR
MY RELATIVESA couple drove several miles down a country road, not saying a word. An earlier discussion had led to an argument, and neither wanted to concede their position. As they passed a barnyard of mules and pigs, the husband sarcastically asked, “Relatives of yours?” “Yep,” the wife replied, “In-laws.”
EXPLAINING MARRIAGEThe child was a typical four-year-old girl - cute, inquisitive, bright as a new penny. When she expressed difficulty in grasping the concept of marriage, her father decided to pull out his wedding photo album, thinking visual images would help. One page after another, he pointed out the bride arriving at the church, the entrance, the wedding ceremony, the recessional, the reception, etc. “Now do you understand?” he asked.
THE LINE-UP In heaven there were two lines. One said “Men who were bossed by their wives,” and the other one said, “Men who weren’t bossed by their wives”. There was a big line for the first one, but then the man who was checking peoples name in the book of life saw one man in the other line. So he told the guys to wait. He asked the man why he was in that line. The man replied, “My wife told me to.”

Many years ago, William Shakespeare penned, “Love is an ever-fixed mark that looks on tempests and is never shaken.” We agree. Love is the one thing that enables us to keep pushing forward when everything else is crumbling around us.
If the love of a husband and wife is true, the appearance of adversity actually strengthens their love. Gary Smalley has written, “Suffering has a way of bringing people together; the most important things on earth come into sharper focus.”
Since none of us are exempt from trouble, let us prepare ourselves in advance, knowing that adversity can make a marriage stronger.
Remaining tender during a trial is one of the most powerful ways to build an intimate relationship.

JOKES FOR YOUR SOUL
A VERY FAITHFUL WOMAN
An elderly lady was well-known for her faith and for her boldness in talking about it.
She would stand on her front porch and shout “PRAISE THE LORD!”
Next door to her lived an atheist who would get so angry at her proclamations he would shout, “There ain’t no Lord!!”
Hard times set in on the elderly lady, and she prayed for GOD to send her some assistance.
She stood on her porch and shouted “PRAISE THE LORD. GOD I NEED FOOD!! I AM HAVING A HARD TIME. PLEASE LORD, SEND ME SOME GROCERIES!!”
The next morning the lady went out on her porch and noted a large bag of groceries and shouted, “PRAISE THE LORD.”
The neighbor jumped from behind a bush and said, “Aha! I told you there was no Lord. I bought those groceries, God didn’t.”
The lady started jumping up and down and clapping her hands and said, “PRAISE THE LORD. He not only sent me groceries, but He made the devil pay for them. Praise the Lord!”

DAILY PRAISE FROMTHE BIBLE
Inspiration from the PsalmsBy Dan Dick
O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever. . . . To him that made great lights: for his mercy endureth for ever.
Psalm 136:2, 7
Griffin had gone through college as an atheist. No one could get him to believe that there was a God out there somewhere who made everything go. That was before he began working with the space program. The more he saw the scope and majesty of the cosmos,
the more convinced he was that there had to be someone out there who authored all the miracles he saw. To see the power of a billion suns shining through millions of miles of space boggled the mind. They couldn’t have just happened. Some great mind had to have a part in bringing it all about. Griffin had come far. His briefcase was always packed with pictures and books, but no book was more important than the Bible that never left his side.
People who don’t believe in God reject Him, not because they know so much, but because they just haven’t learned enough. Even in the most scientific and complex equation, God can be found. Wisdom comes not when we say we know all we need to, but when we admit there is much left to learn. Open your heart and mind to God, and watch the universe unfold.
PRAYER: A billion stars pierce the infinite darkness of space. Surely Your light can break through the darkness of my ignorance. Shine the light of true wisdom through me, Lord, and let me share in Your glory. Amen.

PROMISES YOU CANCOUNT ON!
Whatever your problems, whatever your needs, the answers are in the Bible. Whatever you’re feeling, whatever you’re suffering, whatever you’re hoping ... the Bible has something to say to you.
GOD’S PROMISES ON “SALVATION”
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
1 John 2:1, 2 And you; being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
Colossians 2:13
This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation. For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.
I Timothy 4:9, 10
WHAT JESUS IS SAYING TO YOU
By Peter Wallace
More blessings come from giving than from receiving.
-Acts 20:35
Paul quoted these words as he preached to the Ephesians about money and giving.
But they’re true about more than money. They’re true about your time and your energy and your effort. It’s the way of the Lord. To receive spiritual strength and substance, and to turn around and give them away.
These are times you will be on the receiving end of someone’s generosity. And you know what blessing that can be.
But Jesus says to be on the giving end is even more blessed because it’s following in the example of the Lord Himself, who gave all He had totally, freely, utterly. Just for us.
Don’t let your familiarity with this verse dull its intended impact in your life. Today would be a great day to get a blessing for giving one.

GOD GIVES FREELY TO MEN“Eternal Hope For Life”
Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving; Sing praises on the harp to our God, Who covers the heavens with clouds, who prepares rain for the earth, who makes grass to grow on the mountains. He gives to the beast its food, And to the young ravens that cry. He does not delight in the strength of the horse; He takes no pleasure in the legs of a man. The LORD takes pleasure in those who fear Him, In those who hope in His mercy. Praise the LORD, O Jerusalem! Praise your God, O Zion! For He has strengthened the bars of your gates; He has blessed your children within you.
Psalm 147:7-13
But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should l ive together with
Him. Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.
1 Thessalonians 5:8-11
But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

FRIENDSHIP THAT LASTS A LIFETIME
Friendship that lasts a lifetimeIs one that will give and take. It’s built on truth and honestyAnd offers a firm handshake.
A friend will stand beside youWhen others turn away.
If distance separates for a season,In your heart they’ll forever stay.

IS THERE SUCH A THING AS THE GENERATION GAP?
It’s growing wider every day:Young people think thatintelligence. energy. and
determination are a substitutefor experience. Older people
think that experience is asubstitute for intelligence.energy. and determination.
Two things can bridge the gap:love and laughter. Too many of
the young haven’t learned tolove. Too many of the old have
forgotten how to laugh.
Paradoxical as it may seem, to believe in youth is to look backward; to look forward we must believe in age.-Dorothy L. Sayers

DART TEST...
A young lady named Sally, relates an experience she had in a seminary class, given by her teacher, Dr. Smith. She says that Dr. Smith was known for his elaborate object lessons.
One particular day, Sally walked into the seminary and knew they were in for a fun day.
On the wall was a big target and on a nearby table were many darts. Dr. Smith told the students to draw a picture of someone that they disliked
or someone who had made them angry, and he would allow them to throw darts at the person’s picture.
Sally’s friend drew a picture of who had stolen her boyfriend. Another friend drew a picture of his little brother. Sally drew a picture of a former friend, putting a great deal of detail into her drawing, even drawing pimples on the face. Sally was pleased with the overall effect she had achieved.
The class lined up and began throwing darts. Some of the students threw their darts with such force that their targets were ripping apart. Sally looked forward to her turn, and was filled with disappointment when Dr. Smith, because of time limits, asked the students to return to their seats. As Sally sat thinking about how angry she was because she didn’t have a chance to throw any darts at her target. Dr. Smith began removing the target from the wall.
Underneath the target was a picture of Jesus. A hush fell over the room as each student viewed the mangled picture of Jesus; holes and jagged marks covered His face and His eyes were pierced.
Dr. Smith said only these words... “In as much as ye have done it unto the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto Me.”
Matthew 25:40.
No other words were necessary; the tears filled eyes of the students focused only on the picture of Christ.
This is an easy test; you score 100 or zero. It’s your choice.

TRUST MORE -- FEAR LESSBy Max Lucado
The LORD is my light and my salvation-whom shall I fear? PSALM 27:1 NIV
Jesus says the options are clear. On one side there is the voice of safety. You can build a fire in the hearth, stay inside, and stay warm and dry for what you don’t try, right? You can’t fall if you don’t take a stand, right? You can’t lose your balance if you never climb, right? So don’t try it. Take the safe route.
Or you can hear the voice of adventure-God’s adventure. Instead of building a fire in your hearth, build a fire in your heart. Follow God’s impulses. Adopt the child. Move overseas. Teach the class. Change careers. Run for office. Make a difference. Sure it isn’t safe, but what is?

LEARNING
Being sick is rarely enjoyable, but it may give you an opportunityto learn some precious new truths,
or to re-learn some old ones.
For example,you may have forgotten
just how much you depend on Godfor everything!
Or perhapsyou were starting to take
your health and strength for granted.
Or you may have been neglectingyour relationships-
with family, friends, and God.
Or you may simply not have taken time to think about the purpose of
your life.
Now you have the opportunity to think.
Illness is a time for learning!
THE BIBLE SAYS…Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
James 1:2-4
In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith -of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire- may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

YOU TOOK MY PARKING SPACE AT CHURCH
This should wake us up.
One day, a man went to visit a church, He got there early, parked his car and got out. Another car pulled up near the driver got out and said, ‘I always park there! You took my place!’ The visitor went inside for Sunday School, found an empty seat and sat down A young lady from the church approached him and stated, ‘That’s my seat! You took my place!’ The visitor was somewhat distressed by this rude welcome, but said nothing.
After Sunday School, the visitor went into the sanctuary and sat down. Another member walked up to him and said, ‘That’s where I always sit! You took my place!’ The visitor was even more troubled by this treatment, but still He said nothing. Later as the congregation was praying for Christ to dwell among them, the visitor stood up, and his appearance began to change. Horrible scars became visible on his hands and on his sandaled feet. Someone from the congregation noticed him and called out, ‘What happened to you?’ The visitor replied, as his hat became a crown of thorns, and a tear fell from his eye, ‘I took your place.’
When you receive this, say a prayer. That’s all you have to do. There is
nothing attached. This is powerful. Maybe, just maybe, we can get the world to start thinking of who took our place.

IN THE VALLEY I GROW
Sometimes life seems hard to bear,Full of sorrow, trouble and woe
It’s then I have to rememberThat it’s in the valleys I grow.
If I always stayed on the mountain topAnd never experienced pain,
I would never appreciate God’s loveAnd would be living in vain.
I have so much to learnAnd my growth is very slow,
Sometimes I need the mountain tops,But it’s in the valleys I grow.
I do not always understandWhy things happen as they do,But I am very sure of one thing. My Lord will see me through.
My little valleys are nothingWhen I picture Christ on the cross
He went through the valley of death; His victory was Satan’s loss.
Forgive me Lord, for complainingWhen I’m feeling so very low.Just give me a gentle reminderThat it’s in the valleys I grow.
Continue to strengthen me, LordAnd use my life each day
To share your love with othersAnd help them find their way.
Thank you for valleys, LordFor this one thing I know
The mountain tops are gloriousBut it’s in the valleys I grow!

IT IS BETTER TO BE ALONE, THAN IN THE WRONG COMPANY
Tell me who your best friends are, and I will tell you who you are. If you run with wolves, you will learn to howl. But, if you associate with eagles, you will learn how to soar to great heights. “A mirror reflects a man’s face, but what he is really like is shown by the kind of friends he chooses.” The simple but true fact of life is that you become like those with whom you closely associate --- for the good and the bad.
The less you associate with some people, the more your life will improve. Any time you tolerate mediocrity in others, it increases your mediocrity. An important attribute in successful people is their impatience with negative thinking and negative acting people. As you grow, your associates will change. You will make new friends. Some of your friends will not want you to go on. They will want you to stay where they are. Friends that don’t help you climb will want you to crawl. Your friends will stretch your vision or choke your dreams. Those that don’t increase you will eventually decrease you.
Consider this:
•Never receive counsel from unproductive people.
•Never discuss your problems with someone incapable of contributing to the solution, because those who never succeed themselves are always the first to tell you how. Not everyone has a right to speak into your life. You are certain to get the worst of the bargain when you exchange ideas with the wrong person.

MEN OF THE BIBLEBy Dan Hannon
JEREMIAH
Jeremiah
If you think you’re too young or too ordinary to be used by God, consider Jeremiah. He was probably still in his teens when God called him to prophesy in Judah. Jeremiah thought he was too young and not a particularly good speaker. But the Lord would have none of these protests. “Go where I tell you to go,” God commanded. “Do not be afraid; I’ll be with you.” He touched Jeremiah’s mouth and told him, “I have put My words in your mouth.”
The Lord sent Jeremiah to Jerusalem where the prophet delivered God’s indictment to the sinful, idolatrous people. He pointed out their unfaithfulness and that of their ancestors. He asked them to return to God. He repeatedly warned of invasion from the north: Jerusalem was about to be devastated. Jeremiah went so far as to tell the Israelites to surrender to the Babylonians rather than die in battle.
The people were not happy to hear this message, especially coming from one so young. But Jeremiah also preached that the Lord would rescue the Israelites and rebuild their nation after they returned to Him. But that did not mollify the people’s anger. The Jews plotted to kill Jeremiah and actually threw him in prison for his preaching.
More than any other prophet, Jeremiah revealed his own disgruntlement and questions. “You told us we would have peace, but a sword is at our throats,” he whined to God. He personally agonized as he told the people of their coming defeat. When they laughed at him, he expressed his anger openly.
Perhaps because of his youth, Jeremiah held nothing back. But he was mature spiritually. This is seen in his prayer, “I know we humans are not in control. Punish me as I deserve-but not in anger, for that would kill me.” Jeremiah reminds us that God is in control of every situation.
FROZEN LABELSSubmitted in Memory of
Sis. Priscilla Young
Jane had a system for labeling homemade freezer meals.
She would carefully note in large clear letters, “Meatloaf” or “Pot Roast” or “Steak and Vegetables” or “Chicken and Dumplings” or “Beef Pot Pie.” Every day when she asked her husband what he wanted for dinner, he never asked for any of those meals. She decided to stock the freezer with his various requests. What he really likes. In Jane’s freezer now you’ll see a whole new set of labels. You’ll find dinners with neat little tags that say, “Whatever,” “Anything,” “I Don’t Know,” “I Don’t Care,” “Something Good,” or “Food.” No more frustration for Jane because no matter what her husband replies when she asks him what he wants for dinner, it’s there waiting.

FIVE (5) LESSONS ABOUT THE WAY WE TREAT PEOPLE
1 - FIRST IMPORTANT LESSON - CLEANING LADY. During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions until I read the last one: “What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?” Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50’s, but how would I know her name?
I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade.
“Absolutely,” said the professor. “In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant.. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say “hello.”
I’ve never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.
2. - SECOND IMPORTANT LESSON - PICKUP IN THE RAIN One night, at 11:30 p.m., an older African American Woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway trying to endure a lashing rain storm. Her car had broken down and she desperately needed a ride. Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car. A young white man stopped to help her, generally unheard of in those conflict-filled 1960’s. The man took her to safety, helped her get assistance and Put her into a taxicab.
She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his address and thanked him. Seven days went by and a knock came on the man’s door. To his surprise, a giant console color TV was delivered to his home. A special note was attached.
It read: “Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway the other night. The rain drenched not only my clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along. Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying husband’s’ bedside just before he passed away... God Bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving others.”
Sincerely, Mrs. Nat King Cole
3 - THIRD IMPORTANT LESSON - ALWAYS REMEMBER THOSE WHO SERVE. In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, A 10-year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and Sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him.
“How much is an ice cream sundae?” he asked. “Fifty cents,” replied the waitress.
The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied the coins in it.
“Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?” he inquired.
By now more people were waiting for a table and the Waitress was growing impatient.
“Thirty-five cents,” she brusquely replied.
The little boy again counted his coins.
“I’ll have the plain ice cream,” he said. The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left. When the waitress came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies.
You see, he couldn’t have the sundae, because he had to have enough money left to leave her a tip.
4 - FOURTH IMPORTANT LESSON. - THE OBSTACLE IN OUR PATH. In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the King’s’ wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way.
Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the King indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many of us never understand!
Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition.
5 - FIFTH IMPORTANT LESSON - GIVING WHEN IT COUNTS.Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare & serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the little boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister.

If you are a victim at home... -- If you arrive at home and suspect a stranger may be inside, DON’T GO IN. Leave quietly and call 911 to report the crime. -- If you are attacked on the street, make as much noise as possible by calling for help or blowing a whistle. Do not pursue your attacker. Call 911 and report the crime as soon as possible. -- If you have been swindled or conned, report the crime to your local police or District Attorney’s Office. Con artists count on their victim’s reluctance to admit they’ve been duped, but if you delay, you help them get away. Remember, if you never report the crime, they are free to cheat others again and again and you have no chance of ever getting your money back.

I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, “Yes, I’ll do it if it will save her.” As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing the color returning to her cheek. Then his face grew pale and his smile faded.
He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, “Will I start to die right away”.
Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister all of his blood in order to save her.
Most importantly.... “Work like you don’t need the money, love like you’ve never been hurt, and dance like you do when nobody’s watching.”

WOMEN’S MINISTRYThe Women’s Ministry will have a meeting on Saturday, July 21, 2012 in
the Talmadge Fellowship Hall from 12:00pm to 1:00pm. All women are invited to attend.
Home Going services for Sis. Priscilla Young, “very good friend and sister”
of Calvary member, Tr. Mary Wellons, and aunt of Calvary member, Sis. Marsha Wellons-Lawton was held on
Monday, June 18, 2012 at the James. L. Morse Funeral Home.
Priscilla Marie Maddox Young was born on June 11, 1932 to the late Sylvester Littleton and Ethel Lane Maddox. She was the youngest of eight children, all preceded her in death. She passed away on Sunday, June 10, 2012.
She began her education at the one room schoolhouse in Oriole, Maryland and attended the St. James Methodist Church there. In 1940, the family moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she completed her education, graduating from West Philadelphia High school in 1950.
She was married to Augustus Young, Jr., however, this marriage ended in divorce. Two children were born from this marriage, Lance Robert and Glenda Louise. In 1987, Priscilla retired from employment with the City of Philadelphia after 32 years of service. She began employment as Secretary to the Assistant Manager of the Commercial Museum and Convention Hall, where the friendship with Tr. Wellons began, sharing the birth of children, events and many happy occasions. She later received a promotion to the Clerk of Quarter Sessions Department retiring as a Court Clerk.
She was very devoted to her children, family, and friends. She would help
anyone in any way she could. She loved to travel. During her life, Priscilla visited many parts of the world. She attended church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Laurel, Maryland; and Sicklerville, New Jersey during her relocations. After her health prevented her attendance at church, she continued fellowship with other Christians and family, praying, and supporting TV and Radio ministries.
She was an avid reader and supporter of the Church Chat and later became a contributor. She also attended the Hospitality Ministry Fashion Show every year until her health made it difficult for her to attend.
Priscilla leaves to cherish her memories: Lance Robert Young, Glenda Young-Harris, three grandchildren: Geoffrey “Chooch”: (Alisha), David, and Jenaé, three great-grandchildren: Brandon, Briana, and Brooklyn; sister-in-law, Betty Maddox, and a host of family members, nieces, nephews, and friends. She will be sadly missed by all.

THE BUTTERFLY
A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared, he sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it
struggled to force its body through that little hole.
Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no farther.
Then the man decided to help the butterfly, so he took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings.
The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time. Neither happened!
In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly. What the man in his kindness and haste did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were God’s way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.
Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If we were allowed to go through our life without any obstacles, it would cripple us. We would not be as strong as what we could have been.
And we could never fly....
God provides the struggles so that we can fly!

Albert Irvin Cassell (1895-1965): Architect, Educator and Activist
By Dorothy G. Kapenstein
Albert Cassell achieved outstanding success in his chosen field
of architecture during the middle years of the twentieth century. He lived much of his life during the time when African Americans
suffered under the evils of the doctrine of “separate but equal” when civil rights and equal opportunities were denied to them. Black children in segregated schools almost never received a fair share funding. This meant that there was hardly ever enough money for books, school supplies, libraries and laboratories. In addition, repressive local laws, especially in the south, limited the number of years of schooling black children could receive. Many communities limited them to six or at most eight years. In some areas, there were segregated high schools that also received inferior funding.
For the most part, higher education and professional training were almost “impossible dreams” for African Americans. There had always been a few universities that admitted them from time to time, but this was not a general policy. After the end of the Civil War, African Americans began to found their own institutions of higher learning. Hampton Institute of Virginia and Tuskegee Institute of Alabama were early foundations that at first offered practical education in areas such as teaching, agriculture, and the building trades. Later, through the years, they enlarged their curriculums and added professional schools. Both today are recognized as being among the top universities of the nation. As the intellectual offerings grew, the campuses
expanded. New buildings were needed.
Young African Americans began to think about careers as architects and Albert Cassell was one of them. Although he did not receive his professional education at either Hampton or Tuskegee, he designed memorable buildings for them. Cassell suffered through the pain of segregated education during his childhood and teen years, but he persevered and obtained his degree at an Ivy League University. Cassell’s son Charles I. Cassell was also an architect. He wrote a biography of his esteemed and revered father and in it he said: “The career of my father, Albert I. Cassell was unique, exemplary and inspirational for those who would overcome insurmountable obstacles. Who would have thought that this young man, reared in poverty, with limited opportunity to prepare for a professional career might become one of the nation’s most accomplished African American architect-engineers?”
Albert Irvin Cassell was born in Towson, Maryland. The family moved to Baltimore when he was a small child. He was the son of Albert and Charlotte Cassell. His father drove a coal truck and his mother did laundry to keep the household going. Albert Cassell Sr. must have had musical talent because in his spare time he played the trumpet in the Salvation Army Colored Band. Young Albert got his elementary education in a segregated school and then he went on to attend Douglas High School, also segregated. Cassell had the good fortune to become a student of Ralph Victor Cook, a graduate of Cornell University of Ithaca, New York. Cook taught mechanical arts and young Cassell studied carpentry and drafting with him.
Cassell decided he wanted to become an architect. This was hardly an easy field for a young black student
to get into. There had been a handful of them before Cassell’s time who managed to do it. Few blacks were accepted by colleges and professional schools. The historically black colleges were then doing their best to survive and to offer good, basic educations. For these reasons, early black architects often gained their credentials by working as apprentices or office assistants to those already in the profession. Once Cassell had firmly decided to become a professional architect, he was determined to get a college education. With Cook’s help, Cassell applied to Cornell University and was accepted. Cassell moved to Ithaca, New York. Before starting his college courses, he enrolled in a local high school and took courses for a year so he would really be ready for college.
His college years were not easy. He had to work at any part time jobs he could get in order to pay his tuition and to provide for his living expenses. He worked as the caretaker at the home of one of his professors. He also worked as a bellhop in a local hotel. He may have inherited some musical talent from his father. Several accounts of his life say that he had a good singing voice and worked church choirs as a soloist from time to time. He had a good ear for music and he was able to play every instrument being played in a symphony. Cassell once said that listening to music helped him when he was at work and had to solve architectural problems.
Cassell was on his way to his college degree when this nation entered World War I in 1917. The war had been raging in Europe since 1914. Cassell temporarily left Cornell when he enlisted in the army. He was assigned to the field artillery with the rank of second lieutenant.

Albert Irvin Cassell (1895-1965): Architect, Educator and ActivistBy Dorothy G. Kapenstein◄Continued From Page Twenty
He worked as an instructor. After a tour of duty in this country, he was sent to France. After he received his honorable discharge in 1919, he returned to Cornell and earned his degree in architecture.
Opportunity reached out to him from Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. In 1920, Cassell and architect William A. Hazel were commissioned to design and supervise the construction of five new buildings on the campus. These structures would provide much needed classrooms for the students of various trades and office space for the faculty members who taught them. Around the same time, Cassell got his first private commission with the Howard J. Wegman Company of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Cassell worked on the design of silk mills and industrial plants.
The next stop for Hazel and Cassell was Howard University in Washington, D.C. This historically black center of education had been founded in 1866, after the end of the Civil War. As this institution evolved, it clearly became a center for academic education and professional training. The Board of Trustees of Howard University were anxious at this time to upgrade and improve their Department of Industrial Design with the aim of eventually establishing a degree program for professional architects. Cassell was appointed Assistant Professor and Chair of the Department of Industrial Design. Cassell played a major role in transforming the department into the College of Applied Science. The College became the College of Engineering and Architecture in 1934. Cassell was also responsible for constant updating and broadening of the curriculum.
Cassell then created a master plan for enlarging and providing the University with beautiful but practical and useful buildings. He developed a long-term plan for campus development and he spent the next twenty years of his life putting it into action. He not only designed the exteriors and interiors of buildings, he also gave careful attention to everyday matters like heating and electrical power. Cassell also made plans to acquire the land for the expansion. He got $900,000 in grant money from the Rosenwald Foundation and the General Education Fund, two private Foundations dedicated to providing money to African Americans for educational purposes. The money paid for pieces of ground that Cassell had previously surveyed and approved.
Cassell proceeded to supervise the construction of the beautiful but practical buildings he had already designed for the campus. Among these successful projects were the Chemistry Building, the College of Medicine, the Dining Hall, the Greene Stadium and Football Field, the President’s Home, Wheatley Hall, and a number of dormitories some for men and some for women.
Historians of Architecture consider that his three finest buildings on campus are the Chemistry building, Frederick Douglass Hall and the Founders Library. Most commentators agree that the Founders Library is his campus masterpiece. In the article “Albert I. Cassell and the Founders Library”, the authors call the building “Cassell’s crowning glory” and “the jewel of the campus.” In the beginning, Howard did not have a separate library building. In 1910, the university had a small library built with funds from the Carnegie and Rosenwald Foundations and the General Education Fund. By 1930, this library building was already much too small to house a huge and growing collection of books and a growing body of library professionals.
Albert Cassell, the Campus Architect, came up with a design for a new and beautiful structure that had built-in room for future expansion. It was named for the seventeen men who founded Howard and signed the original charter. It was constructed with a tab of $1,106,000. Cassell liked Georgian Architecture. He had already designed several campus buildings in that style and he made the new one match. It has a tower copied from Independence Hall of Philadelphia. As soon as it opened in 1939, some 200,000 books were moved in, but there was room for 500,000. The latest technology enhanced the lighting and air conditioning. Historians reported that the new wonder was one of the most important structures of the period. They noted that it was the largest and most complete library among the historically black colleges and universities. It was thought of as one of the most modern and sophisticated libraries in the nation. Still in use today, Founder’s Library remains a tribute to the memory of the man who designed it.
During the years he officiated as Campus Architect at Howard, Cassell was busy and active in other areas. He was responsible for designing and overseeing the construction or renovation of buildings in the District of Columbia and in Maryland and Virginia. He also had work on other college campuses such as Virginia Union University in Richmond and Morgan State College in Baltimore. He also put his talents to work for churches. Unfortunately, Cassell and Mordecai Johnson, the first African American President of Howard University, began to disagree on little things. They ended up disagreeing on very large issues.

The arguments heated up and grew. At last, the President fired his architect. The architect sued the President in a long drawn-out court battle. Finally, the case was settled out of court and no one was happy about it.
Cassell joined with two other African American architects to establish their own private company, Cassell, Gray and Sulton. The company did well with projects at the Pentagon, the National Airport and a number of college and school building projects. Cassell had gained great success in his chosen field, but there remained one thing he wanted to accomplish.
Like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Albert Cassell had a dream. He wanted to design efficient, affordable and attractive housing for hard-working middle class African Americans. Decent housing was almost universally denied to them on racial grounds. Cassell’s housing developments would be in suburban areas and would have areas for shopping, parks and recreation. During the Depression era, and using his own money, Cassell purchased a suitable piece of ground on the edge of Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. This attempt was unsuccessful.
Later, Cassell attain his goal with his project called Mayfair Mansions. In 1938, Cassell again spent his own money to buy 624 acres of land from a tract in northeast Washington once known
as the Bennings Race Track. He went into action and this time his mission was accomplished. In 1946, the Committee on Municipal Art gave the project an Award in Architecture. The Fine Arts Commission of the United States also gave it an award for: “Excellence in Concept, Design and Construction.” Mayfair Mansions and one other Cassell building, the Prince Hall Masonic Temple of Washington, D.C. appear on the United States National Register of Historic Places.
When Cassell passed away, his Funeral Service was held in the Washington, D.C. Cathedral! He was buried in Baltimore’s National Cemetery. African American historians Rayford W. Logan and Michael R. Winston paid tribute to the great architect with these Words: “Cassell should be honored for demonstrating the values of interracial cooperation in his various enterprises; the possibility of the good life in privately constructed housing and for setting an example for Negroes in professions from which they had been largely excluded.”
CHURCH ETIQUETTE
What is Church Etiquette? Webster’s standard dictionary describers Etiquette as rules for socially acceptable behavior. How does that apply to church? There should be order and reverence in God’s House. We welcome God when we pray and conduct ourselves in such a way that invites His presence. When we talk needlessly and walk in the middle of the sermon, we disrespect God.
To help maintain respect and order in God’s House. Listed below are a few etiquette suggestions:
Please use outside aisle if you must walk during service.
Do not walk when scripture is being read.Don’t chew gum during worship service.Turn off cell phones and beepers when possible. (If you have a need for these devices, please put them on vibrate).Talk less and praise more. (If you whisper, let it be a prayer).Do not bring snacks and drinks into the sanctuary.
This is just a partial list, as you read this, I am sure you can think of a few more that could be added, if so, keep them in mind or better yet, share them with each other.
“Let all things be done decently and in order.”1 Corinthians 14:40

THE OIL REFINERY
Once upon a time some visitors took a tour of an oil refinery. The tour guide showed them all the intricacies of the refining process. The vast catalyst chambers, the pipes, the heating vats-everything that went into the refining of oil. As the tour ended, one of the visitors asked the tour guide a simple question. “Sir, you showed us everything except the shipping department. This size oil refinery processes a huge amount of petroleum, turning it into gasoline and lubricants. But you haven’t showed us where it’s all put into containers and shipped out to the world.”
“Well, you see,” said the tour guide, “we don’t have a shipping department. Everything that is produced in this refinery is used up as energy to keep the refinery going.”
The church has to understand that what it does is for the world, not just to keep itself going. Too many programs that churches run exist for no other purpose than to keep the church going. The purpose of the church is not to sustain itself but to give what it has away to the world. (See Matthew 28:19 and Mark 16:15.)

GOD BLESS THE USA
We’re in a fix; we’re in a jam;We’re really in a mess.
Our government’s insanityHas our country in distress.
We still have our foundation;Our heritage is our guide;
They’ve ignored the Constitution,But they can’t take away our pride.
The U.S. has a historyOf letting freedom ring;
Americans are resourceful; We can do anything.
It’s our government that’s weak,Living off our labor,
Seizing our wealth through taxesGiving it to our neighbor.
Our temporary problems,We’ll make them go away;
