One of the things about the Bible that has always impressed me is its honesty. Th e Bible paints a picture of life in this world as a series of struggles and hardships, which any of us who have been around for a while know to be the case. But it also tells us that God uses these struggles and hardships to work His eternal purposes into our lives. Paul the apostle put it like this in his letter to the church in Rome: “Having been justifi ed by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ … and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only that, but we also rejoice in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces persever-ance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope” (Rom 5:1-4).

Notice what Paul says: we rejoice in hope of the glory of God, which is an-other way of saying that we rejoice that we are going to heaven. One day we’ll all be in heaven and we’ll be glorifi ed. Th ese feeble, fragile, corruptible bodies will one day be glorifi ed and made like the glorious body of Jesus Christ the Son of God. Th at is indeed a cause for rejoicing! But he doesn’t stop there. He goes on to say that we rejoice in the same way in tribulations.

What are tribulations? Th ey are the affl ictions, the diffi culties and the dis-tresses we experience here in this fallen world. But how could anyone, you might ask, rejoice in those kinds of things? Well, let’s be honest, not everyone can. Th e unbeliever certainly can’t. For the unbeliever this life is all there is and when tribulations strike, the unbeliever is cast down and fi lled with depression. Even

for the believer, rejoicing is only possible for those who know that tribulation is God’s way of producing fruit in their lives. Do we know this? We should because we’re told this many times over throughout Scripture. Sometimes this message comes in the form of a straightforward dec-laration of Scripture, like the apostle Peter’s word that our trials are testing the genuineness of our faith, that it may be found to praise, honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ (1 Pet 1:3-7). Other times the message is com-municated through the lives of the saints. Th ink of Job, Joseph or David. We are all familiar with the story of Jo-seph who was betrayed by his own brothers, sold as a slave and ended up in prison, the whole ordeal lasting about thirteen years. Th ese were indeed years of tribulation for Joseph but later in life he would acknowledge how God had used those things to make him a better man, a more godly man. When Joseph came to power in Egypt, took a wife and had children, he named his son Ephraim, which means fruitful, for he said, “God has caused me to be fruit-ful in the land of my affl iction” (Gen 41:52).

EVERY TRIBULATION THE CHILD OF GOD FACES IS A BLESSING IN DIS-GUISE.

God still uses tribulation, trouble and trials in the same way in our lives today. If you’re going through trouble don’t try to run or hide from it. Don’t become bitter or resentful, but embrace it and rejoice. Every tribulation the child of God faces is a blessing in disguise. God’s Word says it and those who know it will rejoice.

The people weren’t prepared for what they found when they came back from captivity. Th e devastation was overwhelming. Where the temple of God once stood there was now just a huge moun-

tain of rubble.

Such a mountain! Discouragement fell on the people as they had tried to remove the rubble. But the word of the Lord came through Zechariah to Zerubbabel, the man leading in the rebuilding of the temple, “Who are you, O great mountain? You shall become a plain!”

Often when we look at a task the Lord has given us it seems overwhelming. We wonder, “How in the world can this ever be accomplished?” But God’s answer to us is the same as i t was to Zerubbabel :

Before we begin describing what God is like we must acknowledge the limitations k l d h li i i

of human knowledge when speaking of the ineff able and incomprehensi-ble God. Unfortunately, to fully un-derstand what the infi nite God is in Himself, we would need an equally infi nite mind. Th erefore, the church must be content with partial and lim-ited knowledge of the Holy One.

Moses understood the limitations of our knowledge when trying to grasp the mysteries of God (Dt 29:29) as did the apostle Paul when he declared God’s ways and judgments are past fi nding out (Rom 11:33-35). Th e rea-son for this limitation stems from the diff erence between God’s Being and our being, namely, He is infi nite and we are fi nite. Since God is not identi-cal to anything we know in our fi nite existence, He is of a completely diff er-ent order of being. At this point, there emerges three possible views of how we

d’s nature. First, someunderstand Godntical to the world insay God is idenand therefore God canwhich we live aith the same terms fa-be described wiexperience and knowl-miliar in our e

edge without qualifi cation. However,d i hthis would be tantamount to panthe-ism (i.e. God is all, all is God, all is one)and leaves no distinction between crea-tion and the Creator. Others, such asIslam and hard agnosticism, contendthat God is so absolutely other that Heis totally diff erent from anything in ourexperience and knowledge, therefore, eliminating any possibility of know-ing or describing the attributes of God.Rejecting the previous two options,Christianity contends that God andcreation are really distinct and diff erentin their very being as much as a painteris distinct from his painting. Th oughwe can know much about the painterby observing his painting, the two areontologically (by nature) diff erent. Inother words, diff erence in nature be-tween the known and the knower doesnot make knowledge of God impossi-ble. We can know what God’s nature

is like by way of similitude from the things that He had made (Ps 19:1-6; Rom 1:19-21), from His Word (2 Tim 3:16) and from His Son, Jesus Christ (Jn 1:18; 14:8-9; Heb 1:1-2). It is from these starting points we mortals must begin our quest for knowledge of what God is like.

A WORD ABOUT WORDSTh e Bible is full of descriptions of God as a “Rock”, having “eyes” and “arms”, and experiencing emotional “grief” and “sorrow”. Many of these terms fall into a category of descriptions known as anthropomorphic (i.e. in human form, e.g. arms, eyes), anthropopathic (i.e. in human emotions, e.g. grieve, sorrow) and anthropoeises (i.e. in human ac-tions, e.g. walking). How are we to un-derstand these descriptions of God that have fi nite limitations inherent within them? Many have run their theologi-cal ship aground by not having a cor-rect theology of language that describes God. Modern philosophers such as A J Ayer and Ludwig Wittgenstein have challenged the Christian notion that our fi nite words can describe an infi -nite God. Th ey contend that since our vocabulary is of a diff erent order al-together than the One to which they correspond, human words and ideas are not adequate to communicate His attributes. Fortunately, this dilemma was solved 700 years earlier by Th omas Aquinas (1224-1274). Th omas made an important distinction between the meaning of words and the application of words to their object.

With regards to the meaning of words, we must use the same defi ni-tions and meanings when using hu-man language to talk about God or else we wouldn’t know what we are talk-ing about. Agnosticism would result (i.e. can’t know anything about God). Th at is, the word ‘good’ must mean the same thing whether or not we apply it to God or to mankind. Th is allows us to communicate meaningfully. With regards to the word’s application to God it must be by way of analogy or similitude (likeness). To apply human language to God the same way it is ap-plied to human beings reduces God’s attributes to a fi nite level and/or el-evates mankind to deity, both of which are unacceptable. Th erefore, when we come across words that describe God in fi nite ways we must retain the same defi nition of the word, but apply it to God by way of likeness only after it is stripped of all fi nitude. For example, man is ‘good’ fi nitely but God is ‘good’ infi nitely. In both cases ‘good’ means the same thing but the word has been applied in accordance with their re-spective natures.

In addition to descriptions of what God is, there are negative descrip-tions about what God is not. Th is is known as apophatic theology. For ex-ample, immutable means God is not changing, eternal means God is not temporal, etc. Th ese descriptions are necessary to show that God’s nature is no part of His creation, namely, it

09

Page 10: Calvary Chapel Radio Newsletter - Autumn 2009

10

eliminates all characteristics of a par-ticular fi nite category from His being. Th ese descriptions are usually applied to God’s non-moral attributes (im-mutability, eternality, etc.) which serve as the girdle that holds His moral at-tributes (love, truth, righteousness, etc.) together as to their quality and extent (e.g. God is immutably right-eous and eternally loving).

SELF-EXISTINGIn Exodus 3:14 it says God is the great “I AM” and in the Septuagint it says He is “the One who continuously is”. From before the beginning, God’s pri-mary characteristic has been as a self-existent Being (cf. Jn 8:58). Th e Latin language knew this quality as aseite, literally meaning ‘of oneself ’. In other words, unlike man God is not depend-ent upon another for His Being (Isa 43:10), rather, He has/is life in Himself (Jn 5:26; Rev 4:11). He has no origin, something that distinguishes God from His creation. As a self-existing Being, God neither came to be nor will ever cease to be—He just continuously is. Th e self-existing nature of God implies He is Purely Actual (i.e. that which is), which means He is without any potential to be other than what He is. Th is means God will never cease to be. Th is is why theologians call Him a Necessary Being (i.e. a being that can-not not be). Logically, it follows that this is the primary attribute from which

all others fl ow. Th ough self-assertion/existence characterises the very nature of God, man’s desire to become spir-itually independent and self-suffi cient unwittingly treads on holy ground not given him by the “I AM”. Oh, what a comfort it is to know that when we feel like falling apart, or are contemplating giving ourselves up for the welfare of another, God still is! He can sustain His children by holding them together in their very being (Heb 1:3).

UNCHANGEABLE AND TIMELESSLY ETERNALSince God is pure existence without any potential to be other than what He is, He also must be immutable (changeless) and eternal (Mal 3:6). It is impossible for a Being that is without the potential to change to gain some-thing new or lose something, both of which imply change. Both of these op-tions imply that God lacks perfection since to gain something suggests God lacked something prior, and to lose something points to a present lack. If God cannot change, He must also be timelessly eternal since time is meas-ured by change in the ‘before’ and ‘af-ter’. Where there is no change, no time can exist. In other words, God cannot diff er in His state as do changing and temporal creatures that can be meas-ured. Th erefore God is timelessly eter-nal (Ps 102:25-27; Isa 9:6; Mic 5:2).

... man’s desire to become spiritually independent and self-suffi cient unwittingly treads on holy ground ...

Page 11: Calvary Chapel Radio Newsletter - Autumn 2009

IMPASSIBLEBecause God is unchanging, He must be unchanging in all His Being, including the divine emotions or passions. Some have suggested that impassibility (apatheia) im-plies that God has no feelings or emotions at all. However, this is not true. More pre-cisely, impassibility means that God cannot be aff ected by something outside Himself or moved from one state to another. Th at is to say, God really has emotions (Eph 4:6), but they are unchanging emotions. For example, God is always grieved by sin; He will never change in this respect. In the same way, God always delights in righteousness, and this can never be otherwise. Both grief and delight exist simultaneously, unchangeably and eternally in God, unlike our emotions which fl uctuate with the circumstances and our fi ckle fl esh. Th ank God that He does not change in His attitudes towards sin and righteousness! It is because of His constancy that we have the victory!

THE GREATEST RELATIONSHIP POSSIBLEBecause God is pure Actuality (with no po-tential), immutable, eternal and impassible, He off ers the greatest relationship possible to mankind. God can be no more closer to us than He actually is. Any departure from this holy relationship must be due to mankind’s change, which moves him away from the Lord (Isa 59:2). Unlike man, any change in God would be for the worse. How can you improve on perfection?

In Part III we will look at a few aberrant ways in which some have understood these all-important non-moral attributes of God.

TTh e Word of God holds the answer to life’s great question “why am I here?”

God’s Word is the truth that sets man free and provides answers for every aspect of our lives—from the origin of the universe to the end of our days.

God is the answer to the question of ‘fi rst cause’ in the beginning of the universe. Jesus’ teaching on the Sermon on the Mount gives direction to the socialist who desires economic fairness and equality to all.

Th e person who desires to live by His Word will fi nd the way, the truth,

and the life that leads to the Father, who created him and made him a living soul, separate and distinct from all the animal kingdom.

Living by His Word takes us beyond mere religion into the very presence of God as it searches our hearts and transforms us into His very image. His Word is truly living, powerful and full of promise.

So to live, really live, is not to live by bread alone but by every Word of God.

“So shall My Word be that goes forth from

My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but

it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall

prosper in the thing for which I sent it”.

Isaiah 53:11

“Th ere is neither Jew nor Greek, there is

neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ

Jesus”. Galatians 3:28

“It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds fr om the mouth of God.’”

I’m always amazed, looking back, how you can see God’s hand piec-ing together situations in life.

Events, good or bad, signifi cant or seemingly insignifi cant, are all used by God and result in where we fi nd ourselves today. One of my favourite Bible verses is Romans 8 v28: “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God …” Th is verse was especially signifi cant when I fi rst became a Christian and has given me encouragement ever since.

During my school days all my aspi-rations focused on sport, and in par-ticular triathlon. I have always been competitive, and loved sport from a young age. As a teenager I was much more interested in training and racing than drinking and smoking. All I cared

about was achiev-ing that ‘trophy’ British tracksuit.

Th e summer of my GCSEs, study-leave gave me a great opportunity to train full time. I started training with a Christian triathlete, and while on many long training rides there was plenty of time to talk! It was with him that I went to a festival called Greenbelt. I hadn’t expected it to be a Christian festival, but I remember being made to feel amazingly welcome and making some great new friends. I was impressed by the love those people had for one another, so when I got back home, I started to go to a local church with an old school friend, and although I’d always believed in a creative God, I became more acquainted with Him! Th is would prove key to a future di-rection I would take.

From national triathlon training to serving the eternal triune God, Elliot Wilsher recounts the blessings hidden beneath life’s disappointments ...

With or without sport I knew “all things work together for

good to those who love God ...”

CHANGED LIVES

Page 15: Calvary Chapel Radio Newsletter - Autumn 2009

For now, though, sport was still my priority; but as I increased the inten-sity of training during that summer, I started to suff er some pain in my knee. With only a few months until the National Champs I had it checked out. Th e outcome was devastating: Th ere was no quick fi x, and I would need to take at least a year off !

Th at evening I had youth club at church, and although I didn’t feel like doing anything, going was the best decision I made. Th at night was sig-nifi cant because it was the fi rst time I realised God had a purpose for my life. With or without sport I knew “all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to [His] purpose”.

From that day my life started to take a diff erent direction; my goals and aims changed. I was baptized and after A-levels, went off to college. I had the off er of places to study sports science (mainly so I could train full-time!), but they were all conditional to me passing biology, which I failed to do. I reconsidered my future and got a place studying design in Northampton.

Looking back this is another mo-ment that led me to where I am now. I loved sport but design is really what I’m good at—there has been a bit of a struggle between the two over the years.

College was a great time in my life in many ways. Th e course was perfect,

and I successfully achieved an HND and BSc (Hons) in Product Design—which confi rmed to me I was back on the right path. While at college I started to see God use me in diff er-ent ways and enable me to do things I never thought possible. From day one I got involved in the Christian Union and served on the committee in three very diff erent rolls. I learnt to trust God, and my faith grew.

Another life-changing event hap-pened at college: I met Jen, my future wife. I had put my trust in God in the area of relationships, and when I al-lowed Him to be in control, “all things worked together for good”. Once I’d stopped looking for a wife, I saw Jen. We knew each other through CU, but returning for my fi nal year it became obvious she was ‘the one’.

Th e next couple of years were chal-lenging—the Christian walk is undu-lating! Jen and I got engaged; I moved down to London to start work with my old training partner while Jen fi n-ished her fi nal year.

It was at this time I fi rst encoun-tered Calvary Chapel. It was so com-pletely diff erent to churches I had already experienced. I struggled at Calvary Chapel at fi rst. Th e fatigue from past experiences of seeker-sen-sitive services, church splits due to ‘forced’ moves of the Spirit and weak and repetitive teaching had left me feeling unsure about how I could move

15

I struggled at Calvary Chapel at first. The fatigue from past experiences ... had left me feeling unsure ...

Page 16: Calvary Chapel Radio Newsletter - Autumn 2009

forward. I had become lazy and my ability to listen didn’t stretch beyond about twenty minutes. I endured, and I began to ‘go deeper’.

Jen and I married in 1998, got our fi rst home and even started work-ing together. I was running a triath-lon shop and pro tri team—it was a dream. But the business was forced to close, and we both ended up out of work. It took me six months to con-clude the business. Although it hurt as much as getting injured as a young triathlete, I knew God would work it all for good!

In the time I was out of work I was handed a course in web design and started to teach myself. Within a few months I’d built my fi rst sites. Th e web has changed so much in ten years, but it’s been amazing to see how God has used these new skills to provide for my family and impact the ministry. Trying to fi nd a design job, I was em-ployed by a small publishing company as deputy editor. During this time I got a heart to use my skills for min-istry, and especially to help establish UK Calvary Chapels. My fi rst church site was for CC Westminster in 2000, and although basic, it started the jour-ney and fuelled the passion.

Th e publishing company gave me professional and commercial experi-ence, but also pushed me to the limits of my patience—it was a hard, ‘old school’ company and Christian values didn’t easily fi t! Th e company soon

realized I was building websites in my spare time and asked me to ‘champion’ its website. It was a huge challenge but provided me with the raw technical skills I rely on today.

Days after I re-launched the site, our fi rst daughter Charlotte was born. Th e birth of Charlotte also signalled a turning point; it was at the UK pas-tors’ and leaders’ conference in 2002 that I believe God called me to work for Him full time. As is often the case, there was a need for patience after the promise though.

By this time the Bible study in Twickenham had grown into a church plant and we’d moved from CC Westminster with Pastor Rob Dingman. As we waited to see where God would lead us, I started to get more involved in various Calvary Chapel ministries.

Our heart and vision has always been to use our skills to help establish UK churches and ministries; including Calvary Chapel Radio and Creation Fest. Th en in 2005 God fulfi lled His promises and blessed us beyond all we could have imagined. After two mis-carriages our second daughter Sarah was born and we were given the op-portunity to buy a house—something we never thought possible!

For me it reconfi rmed God’s plan for our lives. I’d often tried to take control and work out a solution, but God wanted us right where He had

us. He even provided us with a beautiful house near good schools to prove it. We moved into the house at the same time we felt God calling me to hand in my notice at work.

While leaving a comfort zone, God’s timing was perfect—everything fi tted into place in a way we never could have planned. Calvary Design is now fi ve years old and I’ve been working full-time for three years. God’s faithfulness has been amazing, providing every step of the way. In these tough eco-nomic times it has also been a great witness to God’s continual provision.

Th e opportunities to experience fi rsthand the work of a variety of ministries; from standing in a muddy fi eld at Creation Fest, to visiting India with Gospel for Asia, has fuelled the passion for what we do and reminds us that we all have diff erent gifts and are called to minister in diff erent ways.

I’ve been studying the book of Timothy since re-cently starting to lead our men’s fellowship at CC Twickenham. Th e men’s fellowship is designed to challenge us to step out of our Christian comfort zones and seek to become men of God. A Scripture that has come from those meetings is 1 Tim 1:12: “And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting [me] into the ministry”.

ONLY GOD could have worked my circum-stances out for GOOD. It is by His grace and for His glory that we stick to the narrow path—and for that, I can be thankful!

A Word to Women

SSeizzzinnngggg tttthhhheee DDDay

Pain awakens me. Pain even motivates me.

Because of pain I do things

I would not ordinarily do.

Sometimes I walk through life as a senseless beast simply occupying myself until I die. I am confi dent

that at death every spiritual reality I believe in will be realized. In the meantime, like Martha at the tomb of her brother, Lazarus, I expect very little of Jesus. “I know that at the resurrection on the last day my brother will rise …” My hopes are all future and not in the present.

A senseless person needs pain to awaken them from slumber. My own daughter needs to be shaken to be awakened. I have heard from friends who had surgery that no pain medication was administered until pain

awoke them from the anaesthetic after their operation. Th e pain was necessary to awaken them and guarantee life and health.

Pain awakens me. Pain even mo-tivates me. Because of pain I do things I would not ordinarily do. I seek out a doctor. I spend money. I take precautions. I eat diff erently. I exercise. I do whatever is necessary to alleviate the pain.

Page 19: Calvary Chapel Radio Newsletter - Autumn 2009

Pain gives me a greater appreciation of life. Suddenly I am aware of all that I have. I know that I have jammed my thumb before. It is only then I realise what a necessary appendage that has been to me. Pain makes me thankful for that little

thumb. So God uses pain in my life to awaken me to the greater reality of spiritual life. I still hate pain but I agree with God that it is necessary to bring me back to life. I don’t want to live out my days simply going through spiritual motions without spiritual emotions. I want a greater awareness of all God is doing all around me. I want to seize the moment and live the abundant life in Christ.

A Bible teacher who loves to explore the treasures of God’s Word. Here, Cheryl highlights some of the timeless truths found in God’s Word.

BUILDING HIS CHURCHTEACH THE WORD CONFERENCE - CCUK

By Philip Vickery, CC Oxford

Th is year’s Teach the Word conference was held on April 25 in the city of Ox-ford. Once again the King’s Centre proved to be a great venue with its 1000-seat sanctuary holding the main sessions. Th e conference was extremely well at-tended as over twenty-seven UK Calvary Chapels gathered together for the day. Many of the delegates had travelled over three hours to attend the conference demonstrating a true desire for fellowship. Calvary Chapel Oxford considered it a blessing to serve in organising and hosting the conference.

Th e speakers were Brian and Cheryl Brodersen from CC Costa Mesa, USA, and David Guzik from CC Siegen, Germany. Brian gave a challenging word on ‘the purpose of trials’ from 2 Peter 1, while David spoke powerfully on ‘having the right heart attitude’ from 1 Kings 11. Cheryl taught a session for women and shared on the subject of ‘feeling insignifi cant’. Worship was led by Dave Rios of CC Corona, along with a worship band from CC Cardiff . Th e children enjoyed a full day of events provided by Next Generation ministries, led by Clint Pickens from CC Swansea. All who ministered were a great blessing to those gathered and we would like to thank them for their sacrifi cial service.

Th e conference provided a unique opportunity for the congregational mem-bers of the various UK Calvary Chapels as well as CC Radio’s audience to meet one another and have fellowship together. Th ere was a genuine sense of love and unity amongst the people and a real hunger for the Word of God.

We thank the Lord for His blessing upon the day and pray that He will con-tinue to build His Church here in the UK.

Becoming Mary’ Doug Keen shares his thoughts on this year’s conference

YORK UK PASTORS & LEADERS CONFERENCE

And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. “But one thing is needed, and Mary has

chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:38-42

One subtle danger for pastors and ministry leaders is that ministry can actually steal their hearts from the Lord. Like Martha in Luke 10, we can be worried, troubled, and distracted with much serving. Like the church of Ephesus in Revelation 2, we can be working hard and doing a lot of things right but actu-ally leave our fi rst love relationship with Jesus. How important it is for us to continually refocus our hearts on Jesus.

Th e UK Calvary Chapel Pastors’ and Leaders’ Conference at York (29 June to 2 July) was a time for ministers to get away and simply sit at the feet of Jesus for four days. A time for us to worship Jesus, pray together, fellowship with old and new friends, eat really well, and be fed by great Bible teaching. Th is year’s conference had to be one of the best weeks of my life and I know others who felt the same way. Th e love of Christ was so tangible and real – His love that casts out all fear, breaks down walls of separation, softens hard hearts, brings pure joy, and causes us to love and trust Him even more!

I’m back in the full swing of ministry again, but I’m not the same person. My heart has changed. I thank God for allowing me to experience those four dayswith my brothers and sisters in York. I look forward to next year!

Calvary Chapel Radio has been quietly growing a loyal radio audience over the past six years and, as it’s grown, listeners have asked us to let more people know about the ministry. So this year CC Radio decided to tell a few more people what it’s up to … after connecting with British listeners at CRE, we crossed the Atlantic to meet pastors from further afi eld. In doing so some new and excit-ing ways in which our programming is being used to minister to people were uncovered … for both CC Radio and some CC pastors.

Pastors came from all over the world to this key annual event to meet for encouragement, fellowship and teaching, which this year was from 2 Timo-thy with the message to hold fast the truth. With such a low-key approach to promotion, it was interesting to discover whether pastors were aware of the station… but it wasn’t long before the fi rst of several of the 900 hundred pas-tors attending singled out CC Radio. Intent on asking if CC Radio could be heard in Moldova, Pastor Osigian shared his church’s plans to harness the teach-ing ministry of CC Radio to train up pastors in a newly acquired building in Moldova. Th e building adjoines a business college whose students learn English as part of their course and so the church also hopes to off er up CC Radio pro-gramming as part of their English training.

Closer to home, in Germany, David Guzik, director of Calvary Chapel Bi-ble College in Siegen, suddenly caught sight of the potential for CC Radio to minister to English-speaking Germans in his area. It dawned on him that not only do lots of Germans have ‘those dishes’, as he put it, but that CC Radio broadcast through a large part of Europe as well as the UK. Many pastors min-istering in the US told us how much they like our worship. One told of how he regularly listens as he prepares for his ministry every Saturday night while another told of how his parents listen 24/7 from Canada. Others hearing about the station for the fi rst time were excited at the prospect of sharing the station

with unsaved family members and friends in the UK and Europe. Maybe you have some stories to share about how CC Radio

is being used to bring the Bible home to people in your area. We’d love to hear your stories so please drop us a

line and let us know. Write to us at the address on page 2 or email us at: [email protected]

TUNING IN @ CC PASTORS

CONFERENCE - California

Page 24: Calvary Chapel Radio Newsletter - Autumn 2009

In May, CC Radio ‘let their light shine’ at this year’s national Christian Re-sources Exhibition (CRE) in Sandown Park, Surrey. Th e largest of its kind in Europe, this annual four-day Exhibi-tion aims to showcase a broad range of resources available to Christians, churches and ministries, and this year attracted over 11,000 visitors.

As well as the chance to check out over 370 resource stands (representing over 1,000 organisations), visitors had the chance to participate in a range of seminars, listen to live music, and try out a special art zone in between a cof-fee and a browse through some great reading material in the bookshops.

After exhibiting for the fi rst time last year, CC Radio realized CRE was a great place to share about our most valuable resource—the Word of God broadcast 24/7. We also realized it was a great place to promote Creation Fest, our national Christian music fes-tival, the Calvary Chapel churches as a whole, as well as other services like Calvary Design. So we decided to return again this year with a slightly larger stand in a diff erent location.

We met people from all walks of life, all types of churches, and from all over the country. Some asked for advice about fi nding a Bible-teaching church. As they did, we found our-selves referring to the church listing and map at the back of this magazine. We talked about the importance of the Word of God and why we empha-sise this in the radio and in our church life, and we also had several oppor-tunities to share the gospel and pray with people.

With CC Radio accessible to anyone with Sky or the Internet, we wanted to make more people aware that our Bible teaching and music are available 24/7 on both these mediums free of charge! Altogether we handed out 3,000 copies of our magazine and programme guide. Even if people said they didn’t listen to Christian radio, we encouraged them to take and read the magazine, which contains some informative articles as well as our list of churches in fellowship with Calvary Chapel in the UK and Ireland (now 40+). We hope that many will tune into CC Radio after reading the mag-azine, or come to Creation Fest.

CRE is a great way to meet Chris-tian people from all over the country, as well as meet others who are not yet believers. We had many opportunities to let God’s Word shine as we talked to people about the importance of His Word. Whereas last year, relatively few people had heard of Calvary Chapel, this year we noticed more people were aware of our ministry. Th ose helping on the stand were blessed by meet-ing so many visitors, as they rushed around the large exhibition.

Th is year volunteers from CC Twickenham and CC Leatherhead came alongside Ali and Bruce from CC Radio to staff the stand. If you are interested in attending or help-ing out next year at CRE please let us know (see email below). All exhibi-

tors receive several hundred free entry tickets to give away, meaning you can attend for free if you have a ticket in advance. If you are thinking of com-ing, it would be a great help if you could join us on the stand for a couple of hours, or even a whole day. Either way, you will still have time to wander around and take in the exhibition. If you are a Calvary Chapel church and would like to share in the cost of get-ting the word out at CRE, please feel free to contact us. Lastly, if you are a pastor on air on CC Radio, CRE is a great way for you to meet your audi-ence or even potential audience! So, if you are thinking of attending next year or might like to join us please let us know by emailing: [email protected].

Crusades & the Magna Carta

Christ in Britain

In our last instalment of Christ in Britain we looked at the amazing story of Henry II and Th omas Beckett. Once friends, the two had

a falling out, eventually leading to the murder of Beckett in Canterbury by some knights faithful to Henry.

I remember standing on the supposed spot of that murder in Canterbury Cathedral. I was there for my graduation ceremony from Canterbury Christchurch University. As I looked around the cloister I played out the scene in my mind. It must have been a surreal situation, the culminating act between one man concerned with this earthly world and another man concerned with God’s kingdom. In his classic work, Murder in the Cathedral (based on Beckett’s murder), T. S. Eliot said it best:

Temporal power, to build a good world, to keep order, as the world knows order. Th ose who put their faith in worldly order not controlled by the order of God, in confi dent ignorance, but arrest disorder, make it fast, breed fatal disease, degrade what they exalt.

Richard, John and the Crusades

After the death of Henry II in AD 1189, England was ruled by two of his sons,

fi rst by Richard I who ruled between AD 1189 and AD 1199, and after by John who ruled between AD 1199 and AD 1216. It was Richard’s life, however, that became synonymous with one word: crusade.

Th ough never played out at the time, the idea for a crusade began in the year 1074 when Gregory VII called for a war against Islam as it rapidly penetrated Christian Europe. Th e rationale behind these crusades was more than one religion exerting itself over another, more than Mus-lims killing Christians and Christians killing Muslims. Rather, the econom-ic, social, political and religious land-scape of the day portrayed a struggle between empires, between the East and the West. In this the crusades transcended religion.

Th e fi rst “offi cial” crusade began in AD 1095. In an appeal from Urban II, Europe was called upon to rescue the Holy Land from Islamic regimes. Th e Holy Land was ‘saved’, if, but for a time, and the war was over by AD 1099. Yet less than fi fty years later, however, by AD 1147, the religious-political groups were at it again, with

the Islamic regimes conquering Jeru-salem in AD 1187.

It wasn’t until the third crusade, deemed the “Kings’ Crusade”, that England fully engaged in the wars. Th e Th ird Crusade that began almost one hundred years after the fi rst, be-tween AD 1189-1192, was called the Kings’ Crusade because three kings led it: Philip Augustus of France, Richard of England and Emperor Frederick.

Despite the Crusade’s name, Fred-erick drowned on his way to the bat-tle, and Philip of France went home in AD 1191, leaving one king, Rich-ard of England, alone to lead the at-tack on Jerusalem. Th ough Richard spoke little English and probably used England to support his other armies, he was seen as a pious King in Eng-land, and because of his command of English forces in the Middle East, he became known as “Th e Lionheart”.

Th ough he was not successful in re-conquering Jerusalem, leaving it under Islamic rule, Richard signed a treaty with Muslim leader Saladin, giving Christians the right to journey to Jerusalem for pilgrimages.

After his return to England, inter-nal fi ghting with Duke Leopold led to Richard’s death from a crossbow wound in AD 1194.

John of England

After Richard’s death, his brother John ruled as King

of England from AD 1199 until his death in AD 1216. Other than the fabled interaction with Robin Hood, John is best remembered for his politi-cal ineff ectiveness, which later sealed the Magna Carta, the birth of modern democracy, and his disputes with the Pope, Innocent III.

After the death of Archbishop Hubert Walter on 13th July 1205, John entered an ongoing fi ght with Innocent III as to who should be the Archbishop of Canterbury. King John wanted a chap named John de Gray but the Pope, through his English chapter, wanted Reginald. In the end the Roman-infl uenced chapter secretly elected Reginald, upsetting John who retaliated by electing John de Gray. Th e squabble went back and forth until John was excommunicated in February of 1213. By May of the same year though John had submitted to the Pope, giving money, land and power to the Roman church. Th ese gifts and John’s submission were,

however, all more or less given to help save England from a rumoured attack from France.

After John’s submission, Stephen Langston (AD 1150–AD 1228) be-came Archbishop of Canterbury. Stephen had led a political struggle against King John, leading to the Magna Carta. A level-headed man, Stephen worked to pacify the rocky relationship between England and Rome but this eventually caused the Pope to suspend Stephen from all church functions. After the death of Pope Innocent III, however, Stephen regained his rights to lead the Church under Henry III and it is to Henry III that we turn to in our next issue.

Until next time, grace and peace be with you.
